From the OS
Aston Villa is opening its first football academy outside England in India. I know the first team is what ultimately matters but we need to lay foundations to grow the club across the world to open up new revenue streams.
This follows discussions held with the Minister of Sport Vijay Goel and the Minister of Education Prakesh Javedekar.
Villa is to be appointed as advisor on football as the sport forms part of the national curriculum for Indian state schools.
India’s ambition is to be as successful at football as cricket and ultimately host the World Cup by building from grassroots.
Villa’s academy will be located in New Delhi on property provided by the Municipal Council, including a 3G pitch and offices, changing rooms, gym, classrooms and other amenities.
The academy will train coaches to work in the state schools and will coach kids from the age of five upwards.
Dr Tony Xia, Aston Villa chairman, made the announcement at a press conference today at the Taj Hotel in New Delhi following five days of meetings.
Villa also plans to tie-up with a Club playing in the Indian Football Super League.
The chairman revealed he hoped to find talented Indian footballers to attend the club’s Bodymoor Heath academy and eventually progress to play in Villa’s first team.
Dr Tony said: “Aston Villa Football Club plans to expand globally and India is one of the countries where we not only want to have an Indian Super League club but also open football academies all over India.
“Aston Villa has one of the best football academies in the world and has fans all over the world and some of our famous supporters include David Cameron, Prince William and Tom Hanks.
“Using our network we also want to help promote the U17 FIFA World Cup being held in India next year and make it a big sports celebration.”

Good idea in my opinion
-
Anyone know what a 3G pitch is?
-
Artificial grass
-
Anyone know what a 3G pitch is?
It's a form of artificial turf supported by rubber pellets that has become quite popular but has drawn some controversy due to claims it can increase the risk of cancer. A lot more comfortable to play on than the old knee crushing artificial surfaces.
-
I believe Tamworth have one, where were playing a friendly on Wednesday.
-
I like the idea of spreading the name as far and wide as possible, but wouldn't Indian players struggle to get a work permit to play here? Would we have to find British Indians to marry them to?
-
Most 5-a-side centres (like 'Goals') have 3G or now more likely 4G artificial pitches. The 4G just being an upgrade on 3G.
Anyway, good move by Villa - useful in terms of expanding profile and potentially some players may come through. Though I think the investment is predicated on the former rather than the latter.
-
Good stuff.
When does the punathon start on this thread?
-

You can write about it but videoing it is a problem

Haha...not just British Indians any willing girls who believe in tha cause or in the case of Ladies team boys ;)

I haven't a scooby-doo about the rules of Sikhism but it would be great for football and the the club to have a professional Indian footballer, donning a turban playing week in week out for the club, of course only if good enough not just to be PC.
-

Look! Now!
-
Shouldn't that be a Pune-athon?
-

Newcastle and Sarries rugby union teams both use them.

Just keep jabing away!

I can see some Agra on here if this keeps up
-
Yeah we don't want any argy bhaji
-
Agreed. We need to Sikh a peaceful outcome
-
We don't want everyone to Turb-an each other.
-
Smart thinking this.
-
Very good idea.
-
With the new academy systems in the UK, I'm surprised that Villa - and PL clubs generally - have not been encouraged to get involved with schools in the UK. By being an academy I believe that they can influence the curriculum (extra football) and would be a great way of getting the brand into key areas.

I'd love a Kabbadi/football fusion.

Have watched that a few times - can someone tell me what the hell is going on? The commentators go into raptures yet all I am seeing is grown men playing playground "tag"

Gabby Abanglahore thinks it's a good idea.

Its good to tikka look at football on other continents.
However, if we signed Dehli Adebola I'd be naan too impressed.

A Villa academy in India has got to be a massive bhuna for the club.

Anyone know what a 3G pitch is?
You need to wear your glasses !

It would be great. I'll definitely Singh when they're winning.

We had what was considered to be the best Indian footballer Buhtia (I think) on trial in the 1990's. He wasnt up to much. The Baggies tried him as well. I think he played for Bury for a few games.
-
He played for Bury and doubled their attendance, I think.
-
Isn't this something that was set-up under the Lerner regime?
-

Cracking idea, needs to be run properly and not as a gimmick. One issue will be work permits.
-
It's all about shirt sales really. We don't expect many Indian lads turning up here very soon. We may run a nursery club out there to maximise retail activity.
-
I don't know but I wouldn't have thought shirt sales would be too great. In a poorer country such as India wouldn't most football shirts be fakes, rather than the overpriced, sweatshop-produced originals?

Do they not cut out the middle man? ;)
-
Yes faking it is a problem however Pune is a young vibrant place full of totally aware well educated savvy punters who would spend good money on original branded stuff. City has a population of about 4 to 5 million so could be an interesting market place.
-
If we can find a world class Indian player from the Midlands or India and a World Class Chinese player for Aston Villa we would be very very popular. If South Korea can manage to develop good players enough for Premier League, then they could look at South Korea and Japan for role model.
-
It will probably end up producing fuck all, and quietly die a death, but hey, at least he's having a go.
-
Just the way the game is going. I'm not moved by it either way. Our problems right now have very little to do with the brand of Aston Villa itself. Rather its because of years of mismanagement and how far we have fallen behind many other clubs. We're a big club anyway, and that's not going to change anytime soon. Likewise we are not going to get any bigger anytime soon either. Partly because of us, and partly because of the way football is.
This does send signs to me than our new owner might not be in this for the best of reasons.

Doubt it. How many genuine shirt sales will you see in India? never mind that there is very little in terms of football shirts across the board but given the price the cheap knock-off alternatives will always appeal. This is just a link-up to try and tap into a market with potential 500m or so potential players coming through. I actually mentioned this to the General back in around 2006 that the sub-continent should be tapped into given the amount of people there and the lack of any English football club's footprint.
-
The more we can reinforce the special relationship between India and Brum the better imho. Good stuff.
-
Agree cig. Screw the Northern Powerhouse. Hello Asia. Besides the Bears will love us even more if a few of our incomers also play the summer game.

I gave away a few old Villa shirts to Sherpas in Nepal about ten years ago; I'd like to think that I was the driving force behind this foray into the sub continent.
I'm probably responsible for the boost in sales for Muller yoghurt in Kathmandu too.

My mum told me about this. I said "If this comes off I'll eat 'my hat, Ma' “
-
I didn't believe this story when I read it. I thought it was Uttar rubbish

Quality.

I tried to buy a new motor once in India. I told them I wanted a shiny biege one but they showed me a tan dull car.
-
If this catches on, in a few years we could have fixtures of New Delhi Villa v Buenos Aires Villa.
I reckon there'd be some right Argie Bhaji in that one.
-
You can almost hear the kids out in India "Mum, buy me a Villa shirt".
-
Incidentally, and nothing to do with this thread - do people still order curries 'on the bone'?
Always used to make me laugh.

What? You mean like at 8 in the morning?
(Yes, I know)
-
Well good luck I say if the club are going to tikka chance at the Indian market.
-

Took me a while. Doesn't work as well using Brummie pronunciation.
-

Always used to make me laugh.
1979, Dilshad, Sutton Coldfield, my first restaurant curry. My Dad orders chicken biryanis for me and my brothers and chicken dansak for him and Mom and then says loudly in his embarrassing Dad way "breast off the bone". Barking it across the whole restaurant... And he still says it now... and me and my brothers still cringe now.
