Quote
Villa’s youngsters will compete in the Premier League International Cup for the 2016/17 season.

The competition has expanded to 24 Clubs – 12 domestic Clubs and 12 international Clubs.

It will see twelve of England’s best academy sides compete against twelve of the top development squads in the rest of Europe.

The competition will be open to players U23 so that Clubs will be permitted to name three over age outfield players and one overage goalkeeper.

The opportunity to play against B teams from across Europe has been challenging and an attractive development opportunity for coaches and players.

The competition will be split into six groups of four Clubs.

Each Club will play the other Clubs in their Group once, either home, away or neutral.

The top club in each Group plus the two best placed runners-up will advance to the knock-out stage.

Following rounds will be a straight knock-out (one leg) – quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Man City were the inaugural winners (2014/15) after beating Porto B 1-0 in the final at the City Academy Stadium, while Villarreal emerged victorious in 2015/16 final, when they beat PSV Eindhoven’s Jong PSV 4-2 after extra-time at Millwall’s New Den.

Teams included
Chelsea, Derby County, Everton, Leicester City, Liverpool, Man Utd, Middlesbrough, Norwich City, Reading, Sunderland and Swansea City.
AC Sparta Prague, Athletic Club Bilbao, Celtic, Dinamo Zagreb, FC Porto, Feyenoord, Hertha BSC, PSV Eindhoven, Benfica, Valencia, Villareal, Wolfsburg.

It's a re-brand. We were already in the second U21 division:

Edit: bollocks, can't get that link to work. Anyway, we finished 7th last year in Div 2, Reading and Middlesborough being promoted.

Yes you can park just inside the gates and the Academy Team play on the fenced off pitch 50 yards away with the Under 16s playing across the way.

I went on Saturday and we drew 0-0 with Reading.  The U23s drew 1-1 at Brighton last night.

With the exception of RH-M and to a lesser extent Tshibola and the substitute right-back Corey Blackett-Taylor that was a very piss-poor performance by our second string. Very poor in defence, midfield similar to the first team and Kozak was about as mobile as the Eiffel Tower.

RH-M looked like a world-beater though, 'specially first half.

There's a few this year that have got first team squad numbers - Nathan Baker, Gary Gardner, Jordan Lyden, Andre Green, Flabby of course going back a bit - Rushian H-M is knocking on the door, and Ciaran Clark has departed to pastures new, so not totally barren in terms of numbers but in terms of quality only Jack really stands out for me at present

Clark, Weimann, Bannan, Albrigton, Grealish, G Gardner, Baker. And you can add Lichaj, Herd, Hogg, Burke, Carruthers, Robinson, Johnson, Fonz as players in the pro leagues.

Not great but not terrible either. Who else who was in the top flight has brought through more over the last 6 years?

Doesn't every club produce professional players? I don't think it's much to shout about, most of them appear to be average, and played a part in our demise. Nothing to be proud about really.

I'll look it up later but surely everyone produces pro players of limited quality or there would be no one playing in the lower leagues, we need to start producing again high level players, one or two in half a decade is poor. We've been spending ridiculous money and wages on very limited squad players that a decent youth set up should be able to cover.

We are losing 1-0 to goal a few minutes before half time from  De Pena, but came close to equalizing.

Villa go up the other end and it’s inches away from an equaliser, with Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (still a great name) rattling the crossbar with a ferocious drive from 30 yards!

Villa beat Valencia tonight 2-1 with two goals from Callum O'Hare.
Hopefully he is still alive after being chased down the tunnel by Valencia's big number 9.

It was a very eventful match with one of the Valencia coaches and one of their players being sent off and many players booked on both Teams.  It went off several times during the game with officials on the pitch and the Valencia players spoiling for a fight several times most notably at Half Time and Full Time.
Good performance from our lads with Callum O'Hare, Kalid Abdo, Mitch Clarke and Rory Hale all outstanding.

Villa Ladies will be playing at VP for the first time on Sunday (not Saturday as put out on the official e-mail) 6th November vs Watford - 2PM KO

Not sure about prices but apparently they need about 700 there to prove it will be viable in the future - pity is the day after a home match as we might have picked up a few more - the lad and I are going and taking a chap from work who has never been to a footie match.

Rally round!

And yet it's brought through at least 15 players in the last 6 years that are currently professional players. Who else can match that?

I'd guess that the sales income from home grown players is probably in excess of what it cost to produce them.  Which is comparatively a huge success compared to the senior squad's transfer dealings.

He wouldn't need to play 90.  The fact that he's there and could come on might be enough of a psychological factor.  And, with the game 1 - 1 at 80 minutes and him warming up to come on....who knows?

I watched the U18s and we lost 2-1 to Top of the League West Ham in a very exciting game.  It was also a very feisty game with two penalties and two Red cards plus many bookings.  We have a pretty useful youth Team this year but only one player who in my opinion might make the first Team.

The U16s won 2-1 on the other pitch and I spent about 15 minutes watching them.  They have some good players.

Gabby played very well.  I'm not a fan and one of my biggest problems with him is this position He has been taking up when the opposition back four have the ball which is basically in no mans land, neither pushed up front and putting them under pressure or dropped into midfield to help out.  Last night He pushed up on them and hassled throughout showing for once desire to effect the game.
When we had the ball he was very lively coming off his marker to accept it played into feet and running at the defence or making little diagonal runs so he could be slipped in down the sides.
It remains to be seen if He has it in him to force his way back into the first Team but a fit Gabby might be useful to have at some point this season.
Just a word for his strike partner last night. Rushian was brilliant and at times unplayable.

Just Twitter rumours.
Wouldn't be a bad loan move if Bruce doesn't fancy him just yet but it would be a shame to lose him permanently before we've had chance to see if he can do it at this level.

Aston Villa team news: Four senior players to feature against Celtic for under-23s

Villa will pick a strong side for the under-23s game tonight

ByAidan McCartney
12:01, 9 NOV 2016Updated12:01, 9 NOV 201

Aston Villa have confirmed that they will field four first-teamers tonight in their Premier League International Cup tie against Celtic.

Captain Tommy Elphick as well as fellow first team regulars Aaron Tshibola, Gabby Agbonlahor and Aly Cissokho will all play a part in tonight's match.

Young trio Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Easah Suliman and Andre Green all miss out due to international action with England. They are heading to Wales for their UEFA U19 first round qualifying clash.

The match takes place at Villa Park, kick off 7pm. Villa began the four-game group stage of the tournament with a 2-1 win over Valencia last month.

Season ticket holders can use their season card to gain access to the Trinity Road Stand.

Prices for non-season ticket holders are £3 (adults) and £1 (juniors).

FROM PRAVDA

Villa’s U23s take on Norwich City’s youngsters at Villa Park on Monday and you could be there to cheer them on!

Kick-off in the Premier League 2 fixture on November 21 is 7pm.

Season ticket holders can use their season card to gain access to the Trinity Road Stand.

Prices for non-season ticket holders are £3 [adults] and £1 [U18s].

Tickets for the game can be purchased from the Trinity Road Kiosk (opposite the William McGregor statue) from 5.30pm on the day.

The claret and blues have recorded three wins and two defeats in their last five fixtures across all competitions and looking to bounce back from their 3-0 Premier League International Cup loss to Celtic last time out.

Meanwhile, the Canaries, relegated from the top-flight in 2015/16, currently prop up the Premier League Two table with seven points taken from nine games.

They have, however, racked up four wins out of their last six matches – including a 5-0 thumping of Barnet in the Checkatrade Trophy.

RHM down with an injury, not sure how the challenge that caused it wasn't a 2nd yellow for their guy, really poor tackle.

and had to go off.

Watched second half of this, one thing that struck me was the amount of times we gave the ball away under little pressure. Pretty poor I thought and there wasn't anyone I thought stood out.

The Under 23s have beaten Stoke today, 2 - 4 away.  .............Godzvilla!
Libor Kozák scored a brace as Villa U23s came from behind to see off Stoke City in their Premier League Two encounter at Clayton Wood.

The Potters took the lead on 16 minutes – Hakim Abdallah meeting Oliver Shenton’s cross.

Villa responded and were level soon after - Kozak converting from the penalty spot after a foul in the box.

The Young Lions were pegged back a minute into the second half – the lively Shenton firing home from the edge of the penalty area.

Once more, the visitors regrouped and levelled proceedings just four minutes later – Corey Blackett-Taylor  finishing well from close range.

Kozak grabbed his second of the afternoon with just over 20 minutes remaining – showing his predatory instincts at the back to head home a deflected cross.

In truth, the claret and blues could have extended their lead earlier, Andre Green’s thumping effort crashing off the woodwork.

Yet Green turned provider moments later – his inch perfect cross picking out Callum O’Hare to head across goal and into the right hand corner.
Line-ups

STOKE U23: Isted, McJannett, Sweeney, Edwards, Sadiki, Waddington (Campbell 64), Shenton, Molina (Dunwoody 64), Abdallah, Lecygne, Jarvis. Unused subs: Renee-Pringle, Gyollai, Silva.

Mark is still at the club.  As far as I know He has never been in charge of the Youth Team. He was looking after one of the Academy Junior Teams and now seems to be in charge of the Under 23s alongside K Mac.

The Youth Team bosses Ben Petty and Tony McAndrew have both left the Club. Tony has been suffering with his health in the last year or so and I believe Ben left to take over Leicester City's Youth Team.

Analysis

Jerell Sellars made his return from injury as a young Villa U23 outfit fell to defeat against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Villa took the lead in the first minute, courtesy of a lightning-quick counter-attack after clearing a Newcastle corner.

Corey Blackett-Taylor able to pick out Andre Green at the far post to finish emphatically.

In what was an open first quarter of an hour, the hosts levelled – Curtis Good heading home Callum Roberts’ right-wing free-kick.

Both sides could have taken the lead soon after – Roberts forcing Viktor Johansson into a fine save before defender Mitch Clark hit the woodwork with a close-range attempt.

Highly-rated Johansson showed his worth between the sticks throughout – on this occassion, Yasin El Mahanni unleashed a power-drive, the stopper equal to it.

The home side continued to threaten – Tom Heardman firing over the bar following a clever move down the right flank.

Stuart Findlay put the Toon Army ahead just shy of the interval – heading home Roberts’ cross.

They started the second half on the front foot and could have extended their lead – Joe Linley clearing off the line from a corner while Clark’s crucial block thwarted the run of Roberts.

To their credit the claret and blues kept pushing and went close through Keinan Davis and 51st minute substitute Sellars.

However, the hosts were strong and made it three courtesy of another Roberts corner, this time Heardman headed in.

With 15 minutes remaining, Liam Smith produced an emphatic finish.

Sellars looked lively and only a fine save from goalkeeper Rob Elliot, also returning from a lengthy absence prevented him from netting a consolation.

They did, however, reduce the deficit a minute later - Davis' effort deflecting off a Newcastle man into the net.

Villa will face either Broxbourne Borough or Yeovil Town in the FA Youth Cup fifth round – if we can make it past Blackburn Rovers next week.

The draw for the fifth round was made this afternoon at Wembley Stadium.

We face Rovers at Ewood Park in the fourth round this upcoming Wednesday - kick-off 7pm.

If we defeat Rovers, we face a home tie against one of Borough or Town.

Clubs must play their fifth round games by Saturday February 4 to complete the line-up for the quarter final.

I had that their U18 beat their first XI, adult version, 6-1 in a pre-season friendly.

Not widely publicised ( understatement !) but our under 2s are playing at Naaarich tonight in the Premier League International Cup - Group E -
First Half - Norwich City U23s 1 Aston Villa U23s 2 ( a header from Davis 29 and  cracking 30 yarder from Jerrell Sellars to re-take the lead ...for us  )
I can only find updates on this Norwich site : http://www.pinkun.com/norwich-city/updates_norwich_city_u23s_v_aston_villa_u23s_1_4847249

Sounds like we deserve our lead , Matt Jarvis playing for them ( under 23?! ) , RH-M gone off due to injury.

Calder playing at left back, never seen him in defence before so maybe they're trying him out as the understudy for Amavi.

Our 5 (Suliman I think) looks a decent centre half from what I've seen, always fairly competent with the ball.

Had a better 2nd half, he's been pretty unlucky that we haven't crossed well but he's battled really well and given their centre halves a bit of a battering and did really well in the move that led to their sending off,  missed a penalty though which is frustrating.  I honestly don't think he'd be any worse than gabby.

No strength at all. Penalties get missed so no problem with that, but in the first half he was head down and ran into 3 players when a little lay off to the left would have seen McKirdy through. Not especially fast either. Just so-so for me.

Hardly inspiring..Calder looks a good prospect as is Green of course. There is noone else remotely looking capable of breaking through the first team which is of deep concern. We are near the bottom of the U23 league and it's no surprise really...and there was a time when we was always challenging for the old Central League.

Suliman and Sarkic look good as well.  I've liked Blackett-Taylor when he's on the right but he looked really uncomfortable on the left tonight when he came on.

18 year old - 20 year old rookies in midfield are going to be just as lightweight as Westy and more nervous and therefore error prone than Gardner, surely.
I agree with introducing young pace up front on the wing with Green, but after that we are pretty thin on the ground as far as game-changers goes, I think.

Yeah, the keeper, he looked really assured last night, I like a keeper that takes shots without diving, shows that they understand the game and aren't just an athlete/shot stopper.  It's the same reason why I like the look of Suliman as well, I like central defenders who don't actually have to make many tackles (but are good it when need be) but just have a knack of reading the play, it's why God was so good.

In midfield neither o'Hare or Hayes are ready, the latter is closer though, o'hare has loads of talent but he's a strip of piss.

I watched the first half of that game before watching the second half of the U18s. It was 4-1 at Half time and we were all over them.  I was very impressed with several of the players especially our No 8 who I think they called Lou and the Number 10 who might have been Cam (He definitely scored at least one goal)

Went to watch the second half of the U18s at half time.  We drew 2-2 with Leicester with two goals from Jordan Cox.

The Under 16s were very impressive indeed.

At Under 18 level we are going well in the FA Youth Cup but play a very strong Man City on Wednesday night so that might be the end of that unfortunately.

Although we have a nice Team with some good players there is no one I see who is close to breaking through.
The only one who might in my opinion is Mitchell Clark.  Clark plays mainly at Centre Back is brilliant in the air and fast as anything and really loves a tackle.  Problem is that He is probably 5'8" tall.  He has played Right Back quite a lot for the U23s and maybe that will be his position.

The number 10 was excellent.  I really enjoyed the U16s yesterday.
Any idea who the No 8 would be ? He missed a penalty and then scored a header from a corner a few minutes later.

Some good stuff.Like the look of Alex Prosser  (?)

Good player. Been at Villa since he was 7/8 I think. Talented lad as he can play anywhere across the back or midfield. Two footed. Currently holding in midfield for U 18's. (Well thats where he played on the Cup game).

I thought He might have been the 7.  He played well too.  We scored a great goal where the 10 turned the guy in midfield to start the move and and then was involved again before slipping the ball to Cameron for him to finish well.  I noticed a guy on the embankment filming the match so I guess that is what you saw.
Cameron is a very good finisher from what I saw yesterday.

Villa don't give out Team sheets now for any of the games at Bodymore but I get to know the U18s because they are covered on the website. The U16s are a mystery to me and I was trying to hear what the players were calling each other to work out who was who.

There were three Under 16s playing for the 18s yesterday.  One was Aaron Presley, son of Steven Presley, who was there watching him play.  The other was Right Back Walker who played in the Youth Cup Team last week so must be well rated.  He was very competitive, shall we say.  We also had a Centre Back called Revon (I might have played with his Dad some years ago)
A few players I didn't know but that is usual this time of year as all clubs let players go and start to look at next years crop.
The first Team were in for Training and Jack's Dad was at the game.  I think He might represent some of our Youth players.

Man City are a great Team and have not been beaten all season so it was always asking a lot from our boys but what an heroic performance they gave.
The workrate put in defensively would put the first Team to shame.  It was obvious they were better than us and were camped out in our half for long periods of play but our players always closed down the player on the ball and doubled up on their very talented left winger Sancho in particular.

When we had the ball we played some nice stuff as well.  Lots of great performances from all the lads with Finnerty, Jake Hayes and Jack Clarke outstanding but Mitchell Clark was absolutely awesome.

Suliman is the star in this group, he looks like a top class centreback in the making to me - good in the air, quick, reads the game brilliantly, composed on the ball and big and strong enough to cope against most attackers.

Sellars and Blackett-taylor are enigmas for me, they both show flashes of real quality but at other times the game just bypasses them.

This is all only based on the 5-6 games this season I've watched on the facebook streams though.

We were due to play Spurs on Saturday but it has been called off because of their involvement in the FA Youth Cup.

The Youth Team and the Under 16s both play at Bodymore on Saturday mornings.  It has always been possible to turn up and watch the games but recently they have stopped people coming in without having a pass.
Fairly easy to get on the list but it means a trip to Villa Park and the club checking your ID.

RHM and Green played the full 90 minutes.

The U23 side looks like it will stay in Division 2 of the Premier U23 league for another season. Wonder if this set of players and coaching staff is in need of a major shake up.

Isn't the issue here that we loan out most of our U23s to get them game time rather than playing in what's considered a soft U23 league? This is a critical age for their development and its been proved game time is more important than a less than competitive reserve/young players league?

The U23s are Managed by Kevin McDonald and Mark Delaney at the moment.  I would guess there might be some changes for next season.
The Team that played at Swansea was quite a young side and pretty much all of those players should be here next year.
We have got a number of the 19-20-21 Year olds out on loan and a decision has to be made about them.  The truth is that apart from Ryan Mason at Doncaster none of the others have done very well and seem to be on the subs bench more often than not.
Calder, Cowans, McKirdy, Toner, Suliman, Hale, Abdo and Sellers are at an age where they should be pushing for the First Team if they have a future at the club.

Cam's Dad has just had a meeting about his progress. They said how he has really come on this season and his Dad said he'd like to see him playing more in his natural position up top which was agreed with. He was told Cam can play in any of the top 4 positions so he said he's more of a threat to defenders when he's down the middle. He was told the coaching staff love the way he uses his left foot and said the way he can take corners with his left or right is outstanding. They said the last person they knew that could do that was Gordon Cowans.

The last sentence is slightly worrying and indicative of footballers today. I personally never reached the level that Cam has but I had the same coach from the age of 11 through to 18. He was insistent that I learned to kick with both feet and I would spend half an hour at training just on building strength and ability in my left foot which was the weaker. As I got older I used my left foot far more than my right being heavily influenced by Bruce Rioch- and I always thought left footed players looked more balanced. Professional footballers should be able to kick with both feet- it is a coachable process if started early enough- good on Cam that he has mastered it already.

I too can use both feet and have taken set-pieces with both feet (although admittedly corners and free-kicks with my left are no more than 50/50). It is a huge bugbear of mine when I see any player, least of all professionals, who cannot use both feet comfortably in a game situation. Not necessarily dead ball situations but when it comes to running with the ball, passing, shooting every player should use either without thinking. that commentators refer to players trying to get a ball onto their stronger foot, or that one player has only one foot but how good it is (Beckham) that he doesn't need the other foot winds me up. What are coaches doing? Every player should be taught to use both feet from the off. Ages 7, 8 and upwards. No excuses.

Hale was announced a week ago.  Seems like one that we didn't want to lose but he's gone because we've not given him a chance around the first team.  Given how poor our midfield has been I can sort of see the point.

Whenever I watched the U23's online, Hale was one of a couple who stood out but I'm not sure he was quite ready for a championship midfield just yet.

Hong Kong Soccer 7s Update:

Villa topped their group with two wins and a draw and are, as I watch at this godforsaken hour, beating Cagliari 3-0 in the quarter finals.

Harry McKirdy has scored in all four matches, he runs funny though, like he can't control his arms.

And we've smacked four past Olympique Marseille in the semis. Leicester await in a couple of hours for the final.

Harry scored a hat trick in 3 minutes in the first half vs Marseille. Villa in the final playing Leicester.
