Title: Football League Cup - Luton (A)
Post by: ADVILLAFAN on June 08, 2016, 03:31:38 PM
When is the draw for the Football League Cup? Last year the 1st Round was drawn on the 15th June I think and we're in it this year from the start.

70 teams in the first round, to be played the week commencing 8th August. Imagine the top 35 teams will be seeded.

Pretty sure the 2nd Round is always seeded, so I just assumed the 1st Round was as well. Could be wrong though.

Hoping to get a team I haven't seen before, someone like Accrington Stanley.

That happened to Hull last year:

ALL three clubs relegated from the Premier League face away trips in the Capital One Cup first round (http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/448379/CAPITAL-ONE-CUP-DRAW-the-first-round-fixtures-in-full)

My only worry is that if we lost we'd be hearing "Accrington Stanley, oo are dey? Exactly" for months.

The 1st Rnd draw is usually out the day before the fixtures, so it should be 21st June.
Hopefully away, let's save the game included with season tickets until the semi-final!

Last year England had an extra place in Europe as West Ham qualified via the Fair Play nonsense.

This year England has the standard seven teams in Europe, all of whom receive a bye to the last thirty-two (Round Three).

That leaves twenty-five places up for grabs in R3 which means R2 must comprise fifty clubs.

This, in turn, means that Round One includes 70, rather than 72, clubs.

The two highest-finishing teams based on last season's placings join the remaining Premier League teams in Round Two. These are Newcastle and Norwich who finished 18th and 19th in last year's top flight.

We enter in Round One where we will be seeded along with the 21 remaining Championship clubs, the three clubs relegated to League One and all the teams that finished in the top thirteen of last season's League One.

Should we progress, we will be seeded in Round Two along with all the Premier League teams not in Europe, Newcastle, Norwich and the nine best-ranked Round One winners based on last season's table.

There. What could be simpler?

Fascinating fact 1: we have never lost in the First Round of the League Cup.

Fascinating fact 2: in every single promotion season we have always beaten at least one top flight club in a cup competition.

The draw is 1pm tomorrow, we're seeded in the south half of the draw and will play either AFC Wimbledon, Barnet, Bristol Rovers, Cheltenham, Colchester, Crawley, Exeter, Leyton Orient, Luton, Newport, Oxford, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Southend, Stevenage, Swindon, Wycombe or Yeovil.

Barnet at home will do me. Cheap tickets and they would join Barnsley and Wycombe as sides i've seen Villa and Bromsgrove play in competitive matches. Actually, Crawley may qualify as well but can't remember being at a Bromsgrove game against them although the odds are decent I was.

Crawley were def in the Southern Prem through the late 80's / early 90's glory years :-)

I'd add Cheltenham to that list of both that I've seen if we draw them

I've been there twice in recent years, both with Cheltenham. Last time I went I got half way down the road when I heard a commotion, turns out a dad of two was trying to kick off with some Cheltenham fans looking to get on the official coaches. The other time I went there 10-15 of them tried kicking off with a group of really young fans again just looking too get on the coaches home.

The turnstile consists of 2 people for the whole away end, then you have to walk up steps hanging over somebody's garden too get into the away end. The seats are really, really tight so leg room is very limited. The stewards are over the top, those garden shed/executive boxes are still there and if nothings changed then its unreserved seating. It really is one of the worst places too go, but worth the experience and I believe their looking for a new ground. We will get a maximum of 1800 tickets, 1,000 if they're feeling stingy.

I was a steward at Morecambe for awhile and they hosted Luton at least once during my time there, and did their fans not impress me.  They were thugs, and unlikeable too.

As for the match if it was at home then I'd say it would be fairly routine (or as routine as it can be with Villa) but away it will be much tougher and could get ugly off the pitch sadly.  Should get through, but would have liked pretty much anyone else.

In a similar vein, I looked at our preseason and was quite surprised we'd picked Middlesborough for our final home preseason match as we normally choose someone good to get us match fit.

I then realised that Middlesborough are a division above us and a little part of me died!

I was at that game and it was a cracking goal. We lost 2-1, to a Paul Walsh winner IIRC. I recall the away end was open and they were lobbing stones / bricks into us after the final whistle.

A mate of mine lived there for 3 years a decade ago and it is a rough town. Lots of small minded people with a strong racist minority too.

I know Dave but I still don't care about it, I never have but I'm not taking anything away from past or future teams but as a fan I'm just not bothered. I don't understand why there are two domestic cups. Do other countries do it? I would rather add prestige to one cup personally. It would give our poor tired heroes abroad playing tournaments a little more rest.

The tiny percentage of EDL pricks has given the town a bad name, but most folk got on well when I grew up there, the fact that the EDL could never drum up much support in the town shows this.

Unless you have a massive squad to deal with the extra games then in our case I think its best to focus on the league.  Not saying we should throw this cup, because it would help build momentum if we had a run in it, but we can't put the same amount of importance on it as we will the league.

Problem is with the Championship being such a close league, even if we're some way off the PO come Feb when the final is, or even if we are flying high near the top, there are still plenty of games to change that position.  But since this is near the start of the season then we might as well go for it.

Luton are now selling tickets for the game. According to the Luton website the Oak road stand is for away fans only - as far as I know it holds about 1500.

They are charging £18 for adults so is it safe to assume we will be charged the same ?
