Reality sank in a while back of course, but given it is what it is,
1) who do you want first game?
2) who do you think we'll get?
Answers on a postcard.
I'll go for Preston at home for who I want, and I think we'll get Barnsley away.
Fixtures are out on June 22. First Saturday of the season is August 6th
-
1. Want - nobody springs to mind but an easy 3 points at home would be nice. So Blues then. Kidding - Rotherham?
2. We'll get Burton Albion away. Guaranteed
-
Hopefully we're at home given the last good few have been away. Be nice to exorcise a daemon and give somebody a routine beating at Villa Park.
-
It will be Blackburn or QPR.
-
It will be on TV.
-
Newcastle at home so we can put to bed the defeatist notion that they are a wonder team managed by a wonder manager owned by a wonder owner who are going to smash everybody they play.
-
1. Newcastle Away - A trip up there in the summer will be much more tolerable, plus gets the encounter with the 'best fans in the country' over and done with.
2. Yeah, Burton Albion most likely.
-
Melchester Rovers away.
Never been to Mel Park and with a 56.000 capacity we should get a good allocation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melchester_Rovers
-
Want - a team with a big away end to boost my away attendance before some of the grounds with small capacities come up.
Realistically, they rarely give us a local derby early so we can rule out SH or Wolves.
Please not Newcastle, Wigan or Norwich, that would be very boring.
I reckon it'll be, oh I don't know, Barnsley. Away.
Just noticed TV has said Barnsley. I'll change my guess to Dirty Leeds away.
-
A new dawn for Villa came on the opening day in 1991 at Hillsborough. Maybe the same again?
-
Cardiff away
-
As an aside, is this the first season that the Football League fixtures are being announced a week later than the Premier League games? I'm sure they're just doing that to rub it in.
Surely it would make more sense to do it the other way round seeing as our season kicks off before theirs?
-
Last 5 seasons we've started with an away game and I'm expecting we will this season with a trip to Burton.
-
Someone away with a huge allocation please.
-
Brighton away
-
Copycat.
-
Copycat.
Sorry mate didn't see you had changed yours. I've changed mine now.
-
I think we'll get Brentford away or someone like that who's name alone makes us realise how far we've dropped but one that's actually going to be a pretty tough game.
Brighton away would be similar, but it has the benefit of being Brighton away in August.
-
Blues.
I know a lot of you dont enjoy this derby but sod ya. I like em. :)
-
Hopefully we're at home given the last good few have been away. Be nice to exorcise a daemon and give somebody a routine beating at Villa Park.
Look, I know that he spouts some rubbish on ITV News from time to time but that's going too far ;)
-
I want the Blues away; we will get the Blues away.
I typed 'Blues' not Blues.
-
It has to be one of a home game, or the Rags or Leeds or Newcastle or a London club away, cos I could've sworn every other away game to the provinces was due to be played on one of the 16 cold and miserable Tuesday nights in February, or have I been misinformed?
I'll take anyone at home, don't care who, they'll get smashed. In which case, thinking about it, the barcodes first, please.
-
I want the Blues away; we will get the Blues away.
I typed 'dogshit' not Blues.
-
I just don't want Newcastle at the end when they could be celebrating their promotion and our prolonged stay outside of the top flight.
-
I want Birmingham City at home.
We'll get Leeds away.
-
Blues
-
I'm not guessing in case i'm wrong and get told off.
-
Is there a possibility this could be played on Friday the 5th if we're picked for TV?
I'm at the edgbaston test that day so a home game would suit as I wouldn't want to miss a decent away game.
-
Someone away with a huge allocation please.
Barnsley.
-
Somewhere I can spend the morning on the beach, dinnertime in the pub and the afternoon sleeping.
-

I'm at the edgbaston test that day so a home game would suit as I wouldn't want to miss a decent away game.
Is Sky still doing FL72 games on Friday evenings next season ?
I thought that Fridays were now Premier League
I think that the fixture list is released on 22nd June
-
Want: Bristol City at home, they bring a good noisy support, almost a derby for them and should be 3 points to kick us off
Will get: Leeds United away, played on some silly day at a silly time outside licensing hours - Sunday at 3am?
-
Want Rotherham at home, will get Huddersfield away
-

I think there are only 10 Friday night slots for PL games over the whole season, so I assume there will still also be Championship games on Friday nights.
-
We want someone really shit, shitter than us, because we are going to struggle to be fully prepared as usual for the start of the season.
-
Want - blast from the past - Sheffield Wednesday away. Either them or Forest.
We will end up getting some non descript outfit like Huddersfield though to serve as a bleak reminder of where we find ourselves.
-
Want: Somebody crap at home. I can't make it.
-
Want someone like Barnsley or Sheffield Wednesday away with a big allocation.
Will get someone nondescript like Preston at home.
-
Forest at home.
-
Derbyshire at home lets get up and running against a decent side
-
Derby away. Midlands derby, two sleeping giants, against the manager who at one point was looking Villa bound. All the boxes ticked :)
I will go for Leeds at home for the final league game.
-
It will be someone who will graphically illustrate our fall from grace - like Rotherham or Barnsley.
Leeds or SW at home would be good.
-
It'll be a Friday evening away somewhere shite.
-
would be delighted with Preston/Blackburn/Wigan away on the Friday....gutted if it was the Saturday due to holidays!
-
Man Utd at home.
Oh fuck !!
-
Blackburn away
-
Coventry away. Hit them early, hit them hard.
-
Coventry away. Hit them early, hit them hard.
They're a mid-table League 1 side, if we are playing them any time soon, I'll be worried.
-
Coventry away. Hit them early, hit them hard.
Give it a year.....
-
Blackburn or Wednesday, but knowing our luck it'll be something really mouthwatering like Huddersfield or Rotherham.
-
Barnsley AWAY - the joy of Championship football!!! and it will be on the telly
-
It won't be blues that will be in October as always
-
Someone away with a huge allocation please.
Barnsley.
I remember going there in the FA Cup. It was really nice when we left Cheltenham but pissed it down in their open away end all afternoon. Rounded off with some pavement dancing racists getting a clump as we tried to get back on the coach.
-
Leeds at home 40,000 in villa park amazing atmosphere balloons everywhere just to show the prem how much they will miss villa park
Will get , see above
-
Last time we were in this division,Blues was about the second home game at the tail end of August. However,I suspect we will find ourselves at the tip around about October.
I think we'll be somewhere potentially interesting for the camera's...Saturday afternoon 1245...Away at Forest...or Wigan.Which will be a bind as I'm on my hols, and they are two of the Awaydays I'd promised myself and son.So preferably either Wolves,QPR,Cardiff,Ipswich or Naaarwich. No intention of any of doing any of those, please footballing gods.
-
Want: Burton Albion at home - start off with a win as we get used to our new surroundings
Will get: We'll actually start 2 weeks before the rest and get Man Utd away, with the second game Man Utd at home, as Richard Scudamore implements a special dispensation with the FL to ensure the Special Ones get their customary 6 points a season from us
-
It'll be Newcastle at home
-
Blackburn or Wednesday, but knowing our luck it'll be something really mouthwatering like Huddersfield or Rotherham.
Quite a few people on this thread have sneered at Huddersfield as an example of the shitness that we are going to have to endure. So I just thought I'd mention that Huddersfield were Football League champions three seasons running (in the 1920s) and that for the coming season, by offering season tickets at £179 per adult, have already shifted around 15,000 season tickets.
-
A new dawn for Villa came on the opening day in 1991 at Hillsborough. Maybe the same again?
And what a spectacular day it was!

Have some of that
-
The comment on Barnsleys open end has got me wondering if there are any in the championship,if so I want them away in late summer.
-
We are never at home first game! I fancy Wigan away.
-
Want - Sheff Weds at home. Quite fond of the Weds.
Probably get - Newcastle away.
-
Want: someone we can beat at home
Probably get: Blues, Wolves or Newcastle away
-

I've been to Huddersfield away a few times with a few mates who support a team which shall remain nameless. It's a good away end and if memory serves there is an excellent range of Holland's pies and bacon sandwiches. Should be an excellent day out.
-
Not been to Huddersfield, but I've seen that you get a decent allocation all behind one goal, so I'm looking forward to it.
That said, I don't see how you can be surprised that people are doing a bit of sneering at playing the likes of Huddersfield in what is I suspect a quintessentially shite northern town with a small club who've done nowt for 100 years.
The Wolves were big in the 50s, but you wouldn't be using that against anybody who described them as anything other than a tinpot outfit, whose entire support claim to have been apart of the 4000 attendances they got in the 4th division.
-
I read that Brighton have sold 23,000 season tickets, which is fantastic support
I doubt that we will sell 15,000 season tickets
-
I read that Brighton have sold 23,000 season tickets, which is fantastic support
I doubt that we will sell 15,000 season tickets
Talking to a Brighton season ticket holder they get some decent additional benefits with their season tickets such as free public transport within a certain radius of the ground, interest free for 12 months, discounted drinks before the game and access to bars afterwards, they do bring a friend for a tenner similar to what we do at certain games so I think if you're a Brighton fan it's a great deal so no wonder they're popular.
-
I'd imagine we'd sell around about what we always sell to be honest. Range is usually 18,000 to 22,000 and we'll be somewhere at the lower end of that scale and likely average the second most after Newcastle.
Supply of tickets though is too elastic to have us selling a massive amount of season tickets. Increase the quality and cheapen the cost and you might create the conditions where people feel the need to have one to guarantee a seat.
If Villa Park only held 30,000 like the Amex, then with only 26000 home seats after away fans and segregation is taken into account, we'd probably shift more because you wouldn't be able to purchase a ticket so comfortably on a match by match basis.
As it is, with over 39,000 home tickets, there's little need for most to have one.
-
Brighton away
This - like the season just finished, a trip to the seaside in the height of Summer, starting with a victory, only this time hoping we don't have to wait until 2017 for our next league win!!!
-
I would like SHA at home or Fulham away.
-
The way it's drawn i think it's Blackburn Burton but not sure home or away or Barnsley who have been promoted. It can't be Birmingham or wolves and as not sure how it's drawn it could then be Wigan or Bristol city. Depending as villa are first club beginning with A and play either b team or last lettered team. But not local teams and discussion on promoted teams. It's actually scheduled not randomly generated from what I make out and hear
-
A new away day with a big allocation for thousands of Villa to see the win to start the season, Huddersfield or Barnsley may fit the bill?
-

Eh? It is done randomly but does factor in certain teams not playing at home on the same day (across all the divisions).
-
Oh I thought it was done after taking out policing local issues and politics , by alphabetic code type like the pair them up and then do reverse fixtures. They do that in prem league no? Like villa dont play home when wba or Liverpool Everton etc

No.

Some list/document (that looks official) has appeared on my Facebook ( I know, I know) time-line with all the fixtures on and the 1st game is away @ Huddersfield and then @ home to Brentford
-

I wondered why someone's just texted me: Huddersfield (a), Brentford & Wolves (h), Leeds (a). Seems a bit early for a leak, so probably fantasy/someone playing around indoors on their computer when the sun's shining.
-
The fixtures aren't finished yet.
-
Seems a bit unfair for us to be playing Brentford and Wolves at Villa Park on the same day.
-
It's got us playing Toon first league cup date so probably balls
-
first weeks fixtures are:
Blues v Sheff Wed
Blackburn v Bristol City
Brentford v Forest
Derby v Cardiff
Huddersfield v AV
Leeds v QPR
Norwich v Fulham
PNE v Brighton

Wigan v Newcastle
Woves v Ipswich

We have to enter in the First Round of the League Cup. Norwich and Newcastle enter in Round Two.

It says on the list that i have that fixtures not due for release until 22nd June. I don't see why someone would falsify a full season of fixtures.
I would just assume that someone has been a very naughty boy in releasing them

Trust me - these are not the fixtures. The fixtures have not been finalised yet. The provisional ones are issued a couple of days prior to publication to the police, supporter associations and sundry relevant bodies for final recommendations and revisions. The clubs/media get the the final draft the day before and there's a severely strict embargo until they're allowed to be released.
-
The FL have confirmed they are not the fixtures
https://twitter.com/football_league/with_replies

I was visiting Aston Hall yesterday and walked around VP while I was there.
What a lovely ground.
Whoever we get first, and second and afterwards, they can't fail to be impressed.
RDM - I hope you're going to get us back where we belong.
-
Reading, QPR and Fulham away will do me. Will hopefully get to a home game or two if the impending firstborn leaves me with any spare cash....which it won't...
-
Does H&V still get the fixtures when they're first published?

We haven't for some time. They're available so widely that it's not worth the bother of applying.

Think bottom two prem teams have to play first round and 18th gets a bye into next round or something like that.
-
18th and 19th get a bye, only 20th has to enter in Round One.
The exceptions are when a non-top flight club is involved in Europe and/or England has more than seven teams in Europe. If either of these circumstances had happened then all three relegated clubs would've entered in the First Round.

I am not a great student of their fixture lists but I wouldn't have thought Huddersfield and Leeds would have home games the same day.
-
I reckon we'll be at home first up this time around. We've had Fulham, West Ham, Arsenal, Stoke and Bournemouth the past fives years all away.
Strangely enough that's 10 points from 5 games, significantly better than anything we did subsequently in those seasons.
-
Hoax fixture list (according to Football League anyway) doing rounds on twitter.
If true, we start at Huddersfield and the first home game is Brentford, followed by Wolves on a Tuesday night.
Small Heath at Villa Park on 10th December and return on 18th March.

That's funny. It's been declared hoax by those who would publish the actual list and you go and then go with the "if true" line stating games that won't actually take place on those dates.

I go to Brighton games very regularly, and what they do is brilliant.
As an away fan the concourse will have projections of our favourite players all over the walls, and they often get beer in from the away sides area. So we might end up with Banks's (?) or something similar available.
The pies are also first class.

Won't be projecting any of the current lot then?

If Villa were home on Boxing Day last year will they automatically be away this year?

You are correct, although I've never been sure why they are paired, being about 20 miles apart, unless it's to do with avoiding away fans for Leeds arriving at the train station around the same time as Hudds away fans might be changing trains there. Or maybe it's a WYP staffing issue?

A bit of both, I suspect. Logistically it makes more sense to group Huddersfield and Bradford City together, leaving Leeds with a weekend all to themselves (i.e. grouped with Halifax).

I don't think it's a coincidence, in the league, Huddersfield and Leeds are never both at home on the same day. And Steve, it's not worth pairing Halifax with anyone, they struggle to get 2000 through the gate on a good day.

Not exactly a very exciting first ever match in the 2nd tier of English football for Burton, gotta to be a home game against, us, Newcastle or Norwich.

I'm guessing by looking at Albion's fixtures we'll be away first weekend (Aug 6th) then at home the second weekend (Aug 13th) and away the next two. And at home on Boxing Day. We'll have a League Cup game the first midweek.
I know there are times when we're at home when they are, but not often.
-
....
I don't think it's a coincidence, in the league, Huddersfield and Leeds are never both at home on the same day. And Steve, it's not worth pairing Halifax with anyone, they struggle to get 2000 through the gate on a good day.
It's hardly a big decision, but they (Halifax) do seem to be kept away from the nearest league club.
-
Are Sky still doing Championship games on Friday nights and Saturday lunch times ?
Yes and on a Thursday night some weeks
Is that correct? I was told that PL games were going to be on Fridays and no Championship games were this year.
-
They have rights to a fair few Premier League games on a Friday but it's not enough that every weekend of Premier League matches has a live Friday game. The Football League will be televised on the other Fridays.
-
first weeks fixtures are:
Blues v Sheff Wed
Blackburn v Bristol City
Brentford v Forest
Derby v Cardiff
Huddersfield v AV
Leeds v QPR
Norwich v Fulham
PNE v Brighton
Reading v Barnsley
Rotherham v Burton
Wigan v Newcastle
Woves v Ipswich
I bet you they aren't.
I think he has all the right teams just not in that order
It says on the list that i have that fixtures not due for release until 22nd June. I don't see why someone would falsify a full season of fixtures.
I would just assume that someone has been a very naughty boy in releasing them
Trust me - these are not the fixtures. The fixtures have not been finalised yet. The provisional ones are issued a couple of days prior to publication to the police, supporter associations and sundry relevant bodies for final recommendations and revisions. The clubs/media get the the final draft the day before and there's a severely strict embargo until they're allowed to be released.
I am not a great student of their fixture lists but I wouldn't have thought Huddersfield and Leeds would have home games the same day.
That, or maybe it's just coincidence. Half the league are at home together most of the time.

Even smaller clubs sometimes share stewards, catering staff, stuff like that, so request that they are at home in alternating weekends.
I think I saw a list somewhere which said that a West Ham match causes a chain which stretches as far as Ipswich in terms of which clubs can play at home at the same time.
West Ham alternate with Southend, Southend alternate with Colchester, Colchester alternate with... and so on.
-
Bristol City at home
Cardiff away
-
With Villa and Newcastle joining the Championship its an opportunity for them to cash in with tv games - you can guarantee we'll either be playing them or they'll hand us Birmingham away. Of course it's completely random Sepp Blatter said so yesterday.
-
We won't be playing Newcastle as we are both away on the opening day.
There is no chance we will be given Blose first game as they don't choose local derbies as openers.
-
No one from the north west first home (want some peace and quite on the train) - Huddersfield or Blackburn away would do nicely for first away.
-
i can't be bothered to trawl through the thread to see if this is covered, but sky are announcing the televised fixtures for the opening weekend tomorrow as well.
given there are no premier league fixture and the charity shield is on bt sport, it's reasonable to expect several televised fixtures over the weekend from friday night, with a strong likelihood we'll be one of them.
-
Id like Forest or Burton Albion at home
-
Our first game is away.
-
Gotta be because of the Albion fixtures
-
I thought they came out today?
-
Tomorrow.
I'm hoping we're home so that cdbullyweefan is wrong and looks like a fool.
-
On the OS ,"A new partner has been announced" but the page is still blank, exciting times indeed, any ideas anyone?

I don't think the fixtures will have any influence on my consistently-high levels of foolishness.
-
Away, as far south as possible (I won't be able to attend and so want the fixture to be one I wouldn't have gone to).
-
Am sticking to Derby Away to start with. Not the ideally fixture but that was my gut, so sticking with it. And Leeds Home for the final game which I wouldn't mind too much.
-
bugger. one of my favourite grounds.
-
Tough start too. away Sheff. wed
-
Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday afternoon - 4.30
-
A new dawn for Villa came on the opening day in 1991 at Hillsborough. Maybe the same again?
If anybody want the lottery numbers, please let me know ;)

That is a tough start. A fixture full of history though and did we really want Burton or a lesser game like that?

I was there but didn't get in!
-
Why the 4.30 Sunday kick-off? Assume its on TV, but they normally show Championship games on a sunday at that time?
-
Noses at home penultimate game Sat 22nd April 2017. Nice to send them down while we're going up!

Don't forget there is no premier league game to clash with.
-
Birmingham, Blackburn, Brighton as last 3 games. Hope we have promotion sewn up by then.
-
Well that fixture list has brought it all home. Rotherham first game at VP.
-
The first month doesn't look too bad to me. Get at least a point at Hillsborough (and it would be a hard fought one if we did) then there are more winnable games after that. Just like we shouldn't be too negative about the Weds game we also shouldn't overlooks the likes of Rotherham because they will be up for playing us. But if we get seven or eight points from that first month it could set us up nicely for the season.
