Title: Does relegation have any affect on our review of standing areas?
Post by: Lucky Eddie on May 16, 2016, 08:12:45 PM
I see the green side of Glasgow are installing standing areas. Does our new Championship status have any affect over our intended return to a standing terrace?

I remember that there was a Commons debate on safe standing at English grounds brought on I believe because of our talks with the Premier League about this time last year what came out of it we never heard.
I'm convinced that the German model could work over here, but I reckon we'll have to wait until the dust has settled over Hillsborough and any subsequent criminal proceedings before it will be seriously considered by the FA and MP's.
This is worth reading if you haven't done so already. http://www.fsf.org.uk/campaigns/safe-standing/the-legalities-of-standing/

Which, being as I watch from towards the back of the lower North Stand, is probably the amount of time since I last sat at a game.

Do the lower 2 leagues still have standing areas? And if we were to drop again could we bring back standing?

I think we should just keep dropping divisions until we are allowed to stand.

It makes no difference how far relegated we go. Once you have converted to seating you have to stay seated under current rules.

Tom Fox wasn't as interested in standing as Paul Faulkener had been. Paul Faulkener was building up some momentum with The Premier League, which was lost a bit when Fox took over & now we're not in The Premier League so I think we're back to square one.

There's some momentum for it nationally, but everyone accepts we need a respectful length of time after the Hilsborough verdicts  before it is pushed further.

We'll stand where we want
We're Aston Villa
We'll stand where we want

The whole muddled thinking around standing is best summed up in the criteria surrounding promotion to the Championship. Burton will have three seasons to convert to all-seater. If they get relegated after a season then come straight back up, they'll have two seasons. It will still be the same ground, with predominantly the same supporters inside it. Yet this season it was safe for them to stand. Next season it will become less safe. If they go down again the following season it will be safe to stand again, but not as safe as it was two seasons earlier. If they then come back up it will become increasingly unsafe until at the end of two more seasons it will be completely unsafe. If they get relegated at any time after that it will still be unsafe but if they only stay up for one season it will become safe again until they get promoted for a third time, when it will be safe if they subsequently get relegated a third time but unsafe if they stay up for two successive seasons.

I was at a Bundesliga 2 game on Sunday and it was my first experience on a so called safe standing terrace. What struck me is how different it was to the terraces I remember of old. You were never more than a step or two away from a barrier and this was on a terrace that held approx 10k or so. I felt utterly safe, partly due to the behaviour of the Germans in the crowd, but also in no small part due to the its construction.
