I thought I'd cheer myself up by working out the league doubles over our local rivals and I got the following figures:-
Villa 11 Blues 7
Villa 7 Coventry 0
Villa 9 West Brom 1
Villa 10 Wolves 6
Yes, I know that Coventry don't really count as rivals.
Walsall and Villa have never done the double over each other in the league, but Walsall actually have the only league win between us.
-
Got a faint memory of the Saddlers beating us 3-1 at Fellows Park (?).
Ray Graydon scored for us maybe?
Not googled it as I don't want to revisit such youthful despair.
It's bad enough suffering "Old bastard" despair.

To cheer yourself up even further, take Wolves out and compare our trophies against the other three tinpot outfits. I think you'll find we have won more than all three combined.
-
Even if you include Wolves, we've still won more major trophies than all the other West Midlands teams combined, 20-19.
-
We've only played Walsall four times in the league haven't we?

Drawn 3, lost 1

I was pleased that in 1978; when West Brom had the greatest team of all time, we beat them 3-0 home and away. Their record against us is pretty pitiful, even this season they couldn't do the double over us (and we should have had a penalty at their place).
Blues and Wolves is about what you'd expect and I knew that Coventry had a dire record against us.

I was just going to mention that when I saw that you already had. After going to junior school in Great Barr and being surrounded by fellow Villa supporters, I went to senior school in Walsall and was an isolated supporter - as a 13-14 year old I got a lot of stick about those 4 games - something to be put right after all these years, next season, if Walsall do make it.

It was 3-0 and the gate was 15,000 higher than their previous home game.
I remember walking out after the game and hearing the news of the Ibrox Stadium disaster. When we pulled on the drive our neighbour, a Walsall fan, was waiting to 'discuss' the game but my dad stopped him and said "I don't know how you can even think about football on day like this, haven't you heard the news?"
We didn't live there long but years later my dad said the bloke next never did get to take the piss about the result as dad would make him feel guilty for even thinking about it every time the poor bloke came over for a chat.

I seem to remember us being 3-0 down with around 10 minutes to go in the first game and the Villa supporters (who had taken over the Street End and most of the ground) keeping the ball (in the days before ball rotation caught on). In desperation I seem to remember the referee saying on the tanoi "you help me, and I'll help you" - and I'm sure shortly after he awarded us a dodgy penalty which we duly missed to complete the embarrassment.
-
Conversely, I was wondering who has secured doubles against us during this season. I-reckon:
Man Utd.
Liverpool.
Stoke.
Chelsea.
Swansea.
Spurs.
Everton.
Watford.
And more than likely Arsenal on the final day.

I was at that 3-0 humiliation at Fellows Park Castlefields and remember it well. We had just beat Man Utd to reach the League Cup Final and we played as if we had been on the piss since the Wednesday night .Your right we were awarded a pen in the last few minutes.Willie Anderson who never missed from the spot as a rule of course did just that and if i remember correctly put it over the bar.

Which at Fellows Park probably meant out of the ground.

My recollection is that it was well wide as I recall it hitting the wall behind the goal. I was only 8 so may not remember this very well.
I was distraught and had to be fed chocolate after the game to stop me squawking. We were in the Hillary end behind the goal along with thousands of other Villa fans and I only learned years later that was the main Walsall end.

I think Walsall did something where you got a voucher to guarantee a ticket for the match with us if you went to a game which they made sure didn't clash with us playing. I'm sure I went to a game there with about a couple of thousand Villa turning up to get the necessary voucher, half of who walked out as soon as the game kicked off.

I seem to remember the Railway End at Fellows Park was just eight steps high !

If they do come up via the Play Offs - that's an incentive to settle a score after 44 years !
