Title: 1965.
Post by: Andy_Lochhead_in_the_air on April 15, 2016, 03:04:20 PM
Not seen this picture before. (Click on it to enlarge)
31 players and 22 others.
Off the top of my head I reckon I can name 25 players and 9 others.

wish my dear old Dad was still about as he would of given that a good go...

I go first with probably the easiest Tony Hateley at the front

I have no idea of the two either side of Hateley.
The three to the front left are Roberts, Baker, Rudge.

Isn't Wilson Briggs with Gordon Lee and Charlie Aitken ?

It's 1965 and it's still the 2-3-5 WM formation.
Lew Chatterly and Slogger are two of the centre halves.

At the front of the extreme right hand group of 3 it is Johnny McLeod.
To Phil Woosnam's left (the right as we look at it) that is Lionel Martin.
Behind the McLeod trio the bald headed guy in the centre of that group is Manager Dick Taylor. With I think trainer Bill Baxter at his left shoulder.

Johnny Dixon on the left of the group on the right, middle row

I'm not getting the full picture then Nelson because I would know Dick Taylor and both Johnny McLeod and Lionel Martin.

John Gavin the other goalkeeper with Withers.
Tony Scott with Park and Inglis ?
Barry Stobart and Lionel Martin either side of Woosnam.
Johnny McLoed bottom right but I dont know who is either side of him.

The five directors on the right are Normansell, Smith, Heath, Lovesey and possibly Buckley ?
On the other side I recognise Dick Taylor, Bill Baxter and Johnny Dixon.
I don't think Alan Bennett is there, as I think he took over as Club Secretary from Fred Archer who is in the middle of the back left hand group.

What's the date for this, please? This is from my earliest times at the Villa. I remember Charlie Aitken living down the bottom of our road (Orchard Road) and Tony Hateley arguing with me about my football being one of the Villa's whilst they trained at Grange Road.

Just seen the 1965 date! I would have been 10 or 11.

That round neck kit is my favourite. Sadly they mostly look like sacks of spuds in it..

On another note I'd have bet a squillion quid on Scott not joining the club until we'd hit the second division in 67, but I'd have lost the lot!

Had a look at www.11v11.com web site which lists squads for each season.

John Gavan is listed as a Goalkeeper. Barry Stobart also so he is alongside Woosnam.
Tony Scott should be there, as should Willie Hamilton who I had forgotten about.
This site may jog a few memories to put names to faces. It lists one or two who I cannot recall such as Ray Bloomfield, a winger.

Fred Archer was club secretary back then. Alan Bennett was post-Revolution I believe.
Chris Buckley was a Director of the club and it looks like him at the front of the group. He was Major Buckley's brother - he of Wolves fame?

Dave S - I am looking at the photo on an iPad which allows me to increase the photo size, scroll up and down and side to side by touch screen.

Had to another look at the photo. Not all have round necks. Several have V necks. What a mixed bags !!
Still a lot better than that horror kit of 1987-89 with its stripey halves. Gets my vote for all time worst kit, and there have been some shockers imho.

It looks like first teamers have round necks and reserves have v necks.

Here's my attempt.

Goalies – Gavan (with the really long arms), Withers
Right backs - Bradley, Wright
Left backs - Lee, Aitken, Briggs?
Right halfs – MacEwan, ?, Parker
Centre halfs - ?, Sleeuwenhoek, Chatterley
Left halfs – Pountney, Deakin, ?
Outside rights – Roberts, Baker, Rudge
Inside rights – Inglis, Park, Bloomfield
Centre forward - ?, Hateley, ?
Inside lefts – Stobart, Woosnam, Martin
Outside lefts - ?, MacLeod, ?

Why Jimmy MacEwan is lined up with the half backs is beyond me.
As for the coach/trainers – Dixon is obvious. Next to Dick Taylor is Bill Baxter. Then I assume a very, very, very old Charlie Wallace wearing the glasses.

I did think it was Briggs but it has to be a forward Dave.I am fairly sure it's John Martin.

I think the one to the left of Hateley is Wilson Briggs.

I don't see Willie Hamilton there at all (don't think that's him right of MacLeod).

Johnny MacLeod looks like Rambo.

Don't think that's John Chambers to the left of MacLeod as I don't think he was with us then? He looks maddeningly familiar though.

What a great picture. Two kits - what looks like the total club staff and something very different to normal pre season photos. I can just hear my old team manager yelling " Stop grouping, stop grouping!"

On second thoughts I agree with you re Hamilton but it must have been a first teamer judging by the shirt. The only that's irritating me is the bloke next to Alan Deakin I remember him but why Im not sure. Im in Shrewsbury next week Ill pop into Dave Pountneys shop and see if he can remember him.

At the top right of the picture is a group which I think are the ground staff. They include a bald man with a woman (they look like they are holding hands).I think the man is 'Mush' Callaghan a stalwart of the team in the immediate pre and post war era. Mush was awarded an Empire Medal for his part in rescuing someone from a damaged factory in WW2 at great personal risk whilst a serving police officer. He lived at 50 Nelson Road at the time. He went on to become a Villa groundsman actually living in a cottage at Villa Park (sited on the Trinity Road side of the Witton  End).

Geoff Fellows, Stanley Horne, Dennis Baker 1963

Horne was the first black player in the history of his first three teams -  Villa, Manchester City and Fulham.

Stan Horne although it never gets mentioned was, I think, the first man of colour to captain a football league side....Fulham for whom he played consistently well.  Don't remember Dennis Baker at all.

Dave Pountney is away at the moment but should be back at his sports shop Saturday. I have spoken to his manager and he says Dave has a very good memory
even at 75. I will pop in Saturday morning and see what he can recall.

Great pictures which i had never seen before. I use to watch the reserves every  other week and i think John Martin could be on there as he along with Lionel were regulars in the reserves.Must admit i had forgotten Graham Parker and Ray Bloomfield ,i saw them both make their debuts As fot the second picture,i can remember Stan Horne and Greg Fellows but i can not recall Dennis Baker at all

This is so good - would love a print of that photo.
You can download it off the Alamy website for £9.99 (personal use).
There's a great aerial shot on there from 1968 taken from behind the Witton End showing the bank I used to round down after games as a kid. Might drop a few hints for Fathers Day.

What a brilliant photograph!
I can name most of the players but not all, and some are very familiar but the names had gone 'til I read a few of the comments on here.
Not the best of times but I'd started going down about 61/62, then we moved and I started going again in 64, so most of this lot, especially Withers, Wright, Sleeuwenhoek, Chatterely, Aitken, Bradley, Tindall, Park, Deakin, Lee, Poutney, Woosnam, Rudge, McEwan, McLeod, Stobart, Martin, and of course, Tony Hateley, were my early Villa heroes.
Somewhat reassuring to be able to recognise so many and to be reminded of the others by you lot!
I once had a hand-written letter from Dick Taylor in response to my plea that Colin Withers be picked by Ramsey for England...much better than that Banks bloke!!!
Oh to be a totally innocent, non-cynical 11 year old again!
