I've spent the past 2/3 days, using my breaks, to scour other club forums.
About any reference to us, because a couple of work colleagues seem to think we are the
laughing stock of football. They ain't noses nor dogheads no idea who they support.
In fact I don't think they've ever been to any match in 10 years -
-perhaps they don't like me ? :D
Anyway...... we are referenced on every bloody forum I've found so far.
Man U to Sheffield U even.
Hartlepool and even Stevenage and Nuneaton.
And all of the cr@p I've seen is pick-ups from our sites. Records under Lambert, records about to be broken etc. All bad, and all with "jolly jape" comments by the clever supporters of BIG clubs like the Dogheads.
I accept that we are a figure of fun to others, and one blouse forum is running a stupid thread about our demise that almost equals villa threads about their demise.
Perhaps it's time to make friends and break bread as they say ? :D
It is about the "Hate" i'm concerned about.
Not just the petty jibes from our nearest rivals, but the viscious repitition of stats other fans have picked up- from our own forums. JEEZ
I never realised we were hated
But, like Man Utd years ago we seem to have more people hate us than pity us.
At best I would have thought that we would always be a mid-table side that now and again picked up a fan or two who stuck with us, and grew slowly.Globally.
I hate to say this, but the most common jibe / insult /comment I've read so far
--- is about us. The "fans"
We are supposed to be living in 'Victorian times' or living in the past.
We expect to be top-table because of our history
We have an owner who has sunk - and may never recover - over £300 million in our club, and we HATE HIM.
So we, the fans who protest against him are the actual figures of fun.
The reason why we seem to be hated by other fans.
I would suggest,if you are as suicidal as I was, to use a search engine and trawl other forums.
Forget our locals - just go further afield, and see that we are hated.
WHY For Goodnss Sake ?
-
it's just 'bants' Alf. Chill.
-
I don't think it is bants. I believe people when they say they dislike us, but unless you are another West Midlands club I can't see why we would be unlikeable to anyone else other than maybe Newcastle. I get that we are shit and have been for years and the arguments based around the football but not us as a club or the fans.
Anyway fuck them, we aren't here to be liked.
As for Man. United fans they are dicks who even hate each other, who cares what they think?
-
How can you hate a club that routinely gives you six points season-after-season; will ensure that your poor run of form is brought to an end; that will allow your misfiring striker to get back on the goal-scoring track; will routinely sell out their away allocation bringing a load of dosh into your club without troubling you with anything other than an easy home win; and, even if you're in a lower division, present a decent opportunity for a cup "shock"?
-
A lot of the noise being generated by our demise is effectively a back-handed compliment because its a genuine story that a club like us is imploding in full view of everyone. When a `Boro or Norwich get relegated its not big news but a club of our size and stature is another matter. The Germans have a word for it - schadenfreude - which apparently translates as revelling in someone else's discomfort, we just have to live with it - cos it aint gonna change anytime soon.
-
Its more complicated that have an owner who has sunk £300M in to the club. I bet none of the people on these other fora are asking how much of that he has recouped, despite there having been some big sales out of VP over the last ten years.
As for the Newcastle thing, that presumed hatred is based on a day in May 2009 where the events of that day have been getting worse ever since. If Newcastle are really so twisted over a banner or two (I didn't understand why anyone in our support would go to those lengths to take the piss either) and a few people laughing at them then they need help. No doubt our own support will get it (I'd assume not the banners) at Old Trafford on Saturday.
-
It's because we matter to football and they don't...
-
We aren't hated. People just find our demise really funny, just like we would if somebody like Spurs or Man City were enjoying our current standing.
-
Being hated is progress. In more recent seasons we've been completely ignored / disregarded by most.
The emotion from others comes in the realisation that if it could happen to a 'big' club, it could to any club. There'll be plenty more 'expert analyses' and fan-pis stakes before the end of this year; when we finally go down and as our new season commences.
I relish the pisstaking because it gives us a chance to remind people what our achievements have been, the depth of our support and the inevitability of outcry return to the top flight.
-
Most people I know - even those who love to take the piss - have showed some level of sympathy for our current plight. Football is tribal, it's normal for fans to delight in the demise of other clubs to an extent but everything is accentuated by the internet. I think there are a lot of fans in 'real life' who are pretty shocked about what has happened to us this season and many of them sympathise. We have even seen evidence of that during games against the likes of Everton.
The general opinion I get from other fans is that Villa are a big club and belong in the top division.

My experience as well. Even Spurs fans I work with have told me that they are disappointed we won't be in the league next season. In fact, other than our local rivals, I've been surprised at the level of sympathy/empathy we're receiving. You want to try getting our more on your lunch breaks, Alf, and start meeting real people.
-
We aren't hated. People just find our demise really funny, just like we would if somebody like Spurs or Man City were enjoying our current standing.
Exactly.
Nobody I know hates us, most just take the piss a bit, but most also realise that a bad owner could happen to anybody. The general feeling is that Villa, Newcastle and Sunderland deserve to go down because we've all three stunk out the division in recent years, and it's hard to argue with that.
-
Everyone wants to see a 'big' club fall, especially one with a misplaced sense of self-importance. Just before we sent Newcastle down, it seemed the whole world of football was urging us on. After the game I even got a text of congratulation from a knuckledragger. I think it was that atmosphere that led to the banners.
We've gone beyond the threshold of embarrassment now, so some people are sympathetic. But in the tribal world of football, many will be very happy to see us go. Not least our local newspaper.
-
Everyone I know did take the piss, now they just feel sorry for us (and are worried if it has happened to us, it could happen to them).
-
Still one of my favourite chants is
We are Villa
Aston Villa
No-one likes us
We don't care
-
The time to worry would have been had we got relegated and nobody batted an eyelid.
That has totally not been the case - there has been huge amounts of press coverage of our demise, and other fans seem to be paying close attention, too.
That's the difference between us and pisspot clubs like Albion, West Ham, Sunderland - they go down and hardly anyone comments - because 1. They're just not that important as clubs and 2. That's what they do, they go up and down.
-
I wish we were hated, it would mean we'd be doing something right.
I hope to be hated next season, as it will mean we're pissing all over the league and tin pot clubs will be glad not to have 4000 Brummies giving it large at their shoe box ground the following campaign.
We're pitied in the main and as Paulie says, we're on the sports news a lot. You cannot go a few days without hearing us on 5Live or TalkSport. Only the shadow dwelling no marks who orbit us seem to be laughing. Fuck them though.
-
There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.
-
There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.
I think stubbing my toe in bare feet is worse.
I really don't give a flying fuck who hates us, pity's or is just plain envious ( small heath & the Ollbeyun) All I care about is AVFC.
-
Still one of my favourite chants is
We are Villa
Aston Villa
No-one likes us
We don't care
It works for Millwall but not Villa as I don't think people care about us and if they do a lot of them pity us or feel sorry for us but that doesn't scan.
-
It's the Villa this season, next year it will be some other club.
I don't mind the "bantz", it's the pity I can't stand!
-
There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.
I reckon the likes of John Whittingdale would disagree.
-
I don't think we are hated, other than by local rival fans.
I have had nothing but sympathy and a bit of mickey taking from other fans. Admitedly I live up North, and the other fans are all Everton, PNE, Man Utd and Man city, Liverpool and Burnley. For the most part they seem to think it's a shame to see this happen to a club like Villa.
-
I think we are being talked about a lot because of the manner of our demise. It's quite spectacularly bad. It's also been an odd season because Leicester have done so well, and the other usual topics of conversation have been hugely mediocre. However, I expect that once we actually do go down, we'll disappear into the background because the media will get back to discussing the rise again of Chelsea (with Conte), Man City (with Pep), Man U (with whoever replaces LVG), Arsenal and their inability to win the league in a season Leicester win it, and off course the magnificent second place Spurs. As for people hating us. I don't think many do. We are just an easy target right now, and most people pity us which is a lot worse than being hated.
-
The time to worry would have been had we got relegated and nobody batted an eyelid.
That has totally not been the case - there has been huge amounts of press coverage of our demise, and other fans seem to be paying close attention, too.

I remember in 86 when Everton were singing to man u "Down with the Villa you're going down with the Villa" and I took it then as a compliment. Same as now, I can't remember the game but someone was singing it to newcastle or Sunderland. Not that they were going down with their neighbours but with us. other fans would want us to go down every bit as much as many here and elsewhere wanted to see Everton go in the dodgy Segers years simply because its funny to see a big side go.
-
We're this year's novelty act that's all. Whilst we've seen it coming for a few years, nationally we are so laughably poor in lots of departments this season that it is a story. I guess we do pee a lot of others off because we are conscious of our history but every supporter should reference their own club's past otherwise you are just left with now and a world where money equals glory (ask Blackburn).
As for our local rivals ,all of them, they are enjoying it as we would with them. Give them their moment -it doesn't really matter because things will turn again and frankly we should only be bothered about the Villa.
Alternatively it could be our stovepipe hats and sidewhiskers that upsets everyone!
-
I hate us. My dog hates us.
Why wouldn't they?
-
Is that the royal WE? Where does one begin...
-
They hate us more than they love their own club - and that's the difference between us.
-
If we're being criticised for being boring, I would humbly ask why fans of other clubs are watching us? Villa don't owe fans of other clubs anything, let alone entertainment. Especially on TV. Sod right off. I think the club should be set up to cater for it's own fans first. If we happen to be entertaining to others - great, but no one outside of Villa has a right to anything in my opinion. Same for any club, by the way.
-
Chim, chimney
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-oo
We are the bastards in Claret and Blue.
-
It varies from club to club.
All it took for Newcastle was a daft banner, as mentioned earlier. I thought it was a bit shit at the time, but it really seems to have gotten to them, the oddballs.
Everton do seem to genuinely despise us. I think a big part of that was the green eyed monster, when we had money early in the RL era, and looked like we would take their god-given right to be pushing for the CL. I don't recall them being as bitter before, but older fans do mention the League Cup in the 1970s as the jumping off point.
Sunderland -who on the whole- tend to be some of the better fans in the league, have had a bee in their bonnet ever since Darren Bent ditched them in 2011. They genuinely couldn't understand why a bigger club that had been pushing towards the upper end of the table for a number of years previously might have been a more attractive option than a yo yo club marooned up in a city that makes Chernobyl look plush.
Norwich= Lambert.
Leicester= Brian Little
The rest would probably be largely indifferent to us, save for the fact that for the past five years we have acted like Southampton and Cov in the 80s and 90s -doing just enough to stay up and boring everyone into submission in the process. Liverpool and Citeh fans do seem to have a bit of time for us, weirdly. In Citeh's case, it might be in a 'There but for the grace of God go I' way.
Our local neighbours don't count. And most of them can't count. Trophies or anything else. Wolves and Forest seem to be a bit less rabid, because they actually seem to have pride in their own clubs' achievements.
I've seen it mentioned in a few places that we are delusional, and that we don't count as a big club because of our success pre WW2.
It's an odd sort of logic, but even if we follow that train of thought, we have still won, the FA Cup, the league, the European Cup, European Super Cup and League Cup five times since then. How many 'nothing' clubs have won nine major trophies from that period to this? Since football was invented in 1992, we've finished 2nd and 4th, and had a number of consistent top six finishes, plus won two league cups. That's a record not dissimilar to those fashionable North London titans Tottingham.
I'm always delighted to know that Keown OG, Ian Wright and the rest still hold us in such high regard, but our record is still infinitely better than most of the dross in the top flight - even if you amputate the Victorian era from our history (and why would you honestly want to do that). So fuck'em. Fuck' em all.
-
When beggars die, there are no comets seen...

They hate us because they want to be us
-
As said before if the shoe was on the other foot and a big team, that had always played in the premier league, were relegated, we would love it. We are Aston Villa and us getting relegated is news.

-
I don't believe we are hated
sad really I wish we were good enough to be hated by everyone,
but apart from local rivalries I don't think most other clubs fans give a shit about us
-
They hate us more than they love their own club - and that's the difference between us.
I asked my blue nose pal "what makes you happier. A blues win or a villa loss?" He replied "I don't care what happens to blues so long as villa lose"
In a nutshell really. Sad bastards.

*Applause*
Abso-feckin'-lutely.
And the largest audible chant I heard in the Leicester v Newcastle game recently was those friendly foxes chanting ''Down with the Villa! You're going down with the Villa'' to the Barcodes.

Well said mateThat's spot on.
I was working with a spurs fan regularly a few years back and had some right ding dongs with him. He was utterly convinced that spurs were huge compared to little old villa from up north. Even though I told him that we were England's 4th most successful club ever, bigger ground, higher attendances throughout history, provided more England players than any other club, won the European Cup, founder membets, etc etc. There is no comparison between the two clubs where they come on top. But no. He just would not have it. He said being in London made them more high profile than us therefore they are bigger! I pointed out that by this logic Leyton Orient are a bigger club than villa. Biased cockney twats the lot of em.

To answer a couple of your questions.
It's not hard to imagine that's the case.
They probably read one of your posts.
-
I'm pretty sure it's cos we're shit. That's why I hate us anyway.

Meh.

It happened to Newcastle.
I don't think they hate us as much as find it hilarious that, for a club of the size we are, we're so shit and going down.
Like we thought when we sent Newcastle down.
-
Thread smells of a wind-up.
Treating it seriously - everyone wants to see a big club get humbled.
I've no particular beef with Arsenal or Everton (for example) but I'd love it if they went down.
-
Anyone who uses their time spouting hate about anything on an Internet forum isn't really worth worrying about. They're the ones who need to be worried.
-
OK...I take the points many have made about it all being joshin' and banter.
But, I've always believed that the major NUETRALS - the armchair / pub guys, who could become followers, had a soft spot for us, even as a second side.
We've never been dirty, like Leeds who have a really strong nationwide following and are truly hated.
We Have Never doled out multi-millions like both Manchester clubs ... but both have a genuine hardcore hatred on fan sites.
I really genuinely believed that we were an OK side with the nuetrals.
But I see nothing but sarcasm, puerile hate and possibly jealousy now.
A lot is made of our fan's comments about being a "Big Club" and hating the owner.
Not so much about our performances, but more directed at villa forums and US the fans posting our records of disaster thanks to Lambert/Sherwood/ etc They pinch that.
BUT...what I don't get is the "HATE"
That isn't "banter".
To wish a cancer on a player, seems to come from a villa fan, more than a stranger, but I've read that. It isn't "banter" beliueve me.
And it is followed by putrid abuse about us. Our brilliant fans.
Where in God's Name did this hate come from? Why do we deserve it ?
They aren't blouses or doghead forums - but minor and major club forums.
That is the shock to me. I always really believed that we were every fair-minded fan's
second choice team, in a game where their team wasn't involved, I always, really believed they'd support us.
That was my belief.
I've been really shocked by the venom about us, that I've read these last few days.
Pass it off as banter.
Pass it off as jealousy.
Ask me to Chill.
:)
But I can't.
OK ?
-
Eh? Who's jealous of us at the moment?!
Anyhow why does it bother you? Who cares what anyone else thinks and if you do I'd stay away from other fan sites.
-

Second stupid question first. :)
I explained in the OP... WHY I searched.
WHY I was upset by what I read.
The purpose of this thread.
Got It Ian ?
First question.
Who is jealous of us ?
EVERYONE
Not of our position, TODAY, but of our records and history.
The facts that don't dissemble-- and the repeated Tweets, FB and Forum comments about our history is a red-rag to them.
That's Why they attack us I'm now thinking....and why, I think, we have grown from a 'figure-of-fun' to a "Hate".
Because of us. The Fans. Like you, laid back and joyous and assuming we'll survive and bounce back.
Good luck mate...I'm worried and not at all complacent !
-

It doesn't bother him. He's a wind-up merchant.

Alf turn the volume down a little, please.

I think the 'hatred' and 'abuse' are possibly as a result of your style of posting and the jealousy is because their message boards don't have loads of fancy buttons to insert emoticons, colours and use different typefaces.

Does anybody else read some of Alfie's posts in the voice of Ralph Wiggum?

I used to like Newcastle united - then I started to associate them a hysterical Kevin Keegan and topless fat blokes sitting in plastic seats crying because they'd lost or got relegated and I went off them.
As a club you get the respect you deserve - if we play entertaining football and as fans behave in a good humoured but impassioned way - then, in general, the way people think of us will be more favourable.
HOwever, this thread is a wind-up.

I'm glad someone brought this up because every post I see from the originator is choc full of trollish language.
''laughing stock of football
At best I would have thought that we would always be a mid-table side that now and again picked up a fan or two who stuck with us, and grew slowly.''
I'm calling him out as a pathetic, green eyed nose who's obsession yet again leads him to surrounding himself with Villa and Villa related chat. The prick.
-
I don't give a monkeys,
I do agree our position is ridiculous , though.
-
Oh and you are hated because you're a nasty little cess pit club with a shite following who haven't ever contributed anything towards football and have fans who rank as the most deluded in football.
-
The OP seems to be a trader in negativity...
-
A lot of the guys I work with in London all say they can't believe a club like ours is In the position we are and that it will be sad to see us go down
-
I expect Man U fans will be gutted at losing a guaranteed 6 points a season.
-
The OP seems to be a trader in negativity...
The OP washes his dinner down with liquid ecstasy if he's actually serious about Neil Warnock.
-
They're a sensitive lot those Geordies, for me this was one of the funniest piss takes ever at a football match. Why they can hate us for this is beyond me.

Why don't you go back to Small Heath. They are missing their village idiot.
-
It varies from club to club.
Norwich= Lambert.
Leicester= Brian Little
The rest would probably be largely indifferent to us, save for the fact that for the past five years we have acted like Southampton and Cov in the 80s and 90s -doing just enough to stay up and boring everyone into submission in the process.
I've always found that Arsenal fans of a certain vintage, on hearing that I support Villa, always nod their approval and use words like 'noble', 'classy' and 'heritage'. Consequently I've always been better disposed towards Arsenal compared to the other good teams. I had a work meeting with a fella yesterday who used all of the words above.
-
Shame most Arsenal fans behaved like bellends after gubbing us in the Cup Final last year went down in my estimations in stark contrast to the Scousers who were a joy to spend a day out with.

As I said, it's always been the middle-aged and older ones who've recognised the cachet of Villa. We all have our knobheads.
-
I think we are more pitied than hated.
-
Hated by Baggies and noses plus Geordies. Would say most others pity or are indifferent.
-
Pretty much.
Looking at a few club forums with no real rivarly with us (Stoke, West Brom and Spurs) and most are respectful of our big club status and can see the damage Lerner has done over last 5 years.
This thread is on a prominent West Ham forum (Our old mate Sendo pops up). Most are respectful of our status.

It's always amusing when a big club internally explodes and gets relegated. I loved it when Leeds and Newcastle went down so have no issue with any neutral finding our demise amusing.
-
It's only other midlands teams that really hate us. Fairly certain the original poster is on a wind up & probably bragging to his cyber buddies somewhere about his life acheivement.
Let them have their moment because most of them have waited a lifetime for this.
-
Some supporters see us like we see Newcastle.
-
Lets be perfectly honest, do you (anyone) care if we are hated?
I know I don't
-
We are seen by some as a small club but with fans who believe we are a big club.
Let's face it, the club has been acting small time for several years now, thanks to Lerners idiotic stewardship.
I wonder if we will ever get back to being a big club again.
-
I'm hoping Newcastle hate us even more next month.

Were not a big club. Done fuck all of note in over 2 decades.
-
Judging by the number of supporters of other clubs wishing us well on the official club Facebook page I don't think that's necessarily the case at all.
-
Only Noses and Bitters would suggests we are anything but a big club and even they are lying to themselves.
-
I'm hoping Newcastle hate us even more next month.
i don't wish that on them at all, this friction has developed a momentum of its own, all the Newcastle fans I've actually spoken to have been sound, I am genuinely sorry it's come to this between two great clubs.
-
think its a bit of a mishmash
Sunderland and Villa used to have quite a good relationship between us.
Newcastle don't seem to get on with anyone.
Would say we were as big a club as Tottenham
Everton and Villa see each other as rivals - league cup 77/league cup 84 and a bit of tit for tat off the field over the years
The likes of the Sty and Albion would secretly love to support a club like the Villa if truth be known.

great post KG,- cheered me up mate. Like others have said, I receive mainly sympathy, but I'd rather it was piss taking. Especially with people you know. The only person I know who has took the piss is a Cov fan who does the coffee van outside the swimming pool where I take my daughter to swimming lessons. He's actually alright, typical cov though, the bitterness laying not far from the surface. He was going on about Leicester yesterday, doesn't want them to win the league - the only person, I've heard say that- in between sly digs at me wearing my Villa shirt. I asked him if he wore his cov shirt when we sent them down at Villa Park. Arr, no but it weren't you sent us dahn, it were Derby.
-
Pity is much worse than piss-taking.

Gosh, it's dreadful to be hated so much.

The sheer, undiluted, hate from our erstwhile neighbors from small Heath is a joy to behold. - they really do have issues some of them, it does seem to go much deeper than just Football. It's almost a clinical disorder bordering on the pathological. Some of the Facebook warriors I am on with haven't posted one thing all season that didn't include us somewhere. No wonder they're so small-time, their own club just don't figure as long as they can have a pop at us. Sad really.

They can't help it. But it's heartening to know we both share something in common. One thing defines both sets of fans: Aston Villa.

10 years ago if we told people the Blosers were obsessed with us they may not have believed us.
But now in this social media age they really show themselves up as the bitter obsessed ****** that they are.
It amuses me the level of hatred they feel for us.

Boom! Game, set & match Mr J. ;)

Just caught the end of it but looks like being relegated made the BBC 10pm news before MOTD last night.
I doubt the same thing would happen if Sunderland or Norwich went down.
-
We are hated always have been, we should hate back but double, loads of us villa do. :)
-
Going forward, and I mean for quite some time, no one will have any extreme views about Villa either way.
Five years time - "oh yes, Villa. I'd forgotten about them. What league are they in these days?"
-
Nah that's garbage. The only clubs who currently hate us, will continue to do so. That's the Bitters and the Noses, who are Villa haters first and foremost.

We're not hated at all apart from by the Noses, the Olbeeyoon and Coventry.
Neutral fans tend to be reasonably complimentary (sympathetic at the moment) when you tell them you're a Villa fan.
I've seen a lot of positive messages on Twitter from fans of all manner of PL clubs saying it's a shame such a big club are going down. Media coverage very similar on the whole, though it obviously goes into detail on our shambolic management and ownership over the last five seasons or so.
