Well, that was quick from Haye.  Not sure it tells us an awful lot though.

Well, that was quick from Haye.  Not sure it tells us an awful lot though.

I guess it shows that he's got all the power he always had. Doesn't show if he's worked out how to break a strong defence though.

His Footwork was always his problem.
He used to do the splits planting his feet before offloading.
Changing to the 'boxing David' camp should help.

He looked much more like a heavyweight. Considering that guy was ranked 10 and has only lost once, I do wonder who he has been fighting! Never seen a chin waved saying hit me please more freely.

I would enjoy Haye knocking out Fury, were it to happen

There was a time when boxers with beards had to shave them off before a fight. When did that change then?

I've seen George Groves interviewed a few times prior to his fight on Saturday, he's looks and sounds a lost, defeated uninterested boxer already.

I think his last loss has really done him in.

Sounds like Blackwell is okay.

As for the fight...I was always of Chris Eubank fan even before his first fight against Benn so in turn I'm keeping an eye on eubank Jnr. First time I've seen him fight and you can see that he has something about him. Not as good as his dad mind, and I take his age into consideration, but i don't think he has a shot as big as his dad's, i don't think he's got a fighting brain like his dad in as much as when Snr smelled vistory he was ruthless. I think jnr needs to learn that. The stoppage was coming but Snr would have done it two or three rounds earlier without the need of the doctor.

Been watching a big more of the build up to the fight on Saturday and just picked up a feeling of unease amongst the SKY crew.  Was I right hearing that Martin is a southpaw and Joshua hasn't faced one as a pro yet.  Also, picked up a feeling amongst the pundits that Joshua seems a bit too relaxed.

Hard to tell in a fight like this, the guy is barely throwing anything and isn't moving much but Groves didn't really do anything special either.  As he's shown before though, he does have some power so when he gets a clean shot through he will knock people out.

The thing with Joshua is he has very quick hands (both in action and in spotting chances) compared to most heavyweights.  Given that if you let any decent heavyweight catch you on the chin you're going down having someone who picks gaps as well as him means he's always a good bet to KO someone in the first 3-4.  After that it all becomes a bit more difficult to predict because it's uncharted territory but if you put an undefeated world champion on his arse twice in the 2nd round you're over the 'he's not fought anyone' hump and you have to be looked at as the real deal.

I don't want him to fight Haye, AJ gets nothing from that fight right now, Wilder, Ortiz or Fury should be the ones he's looking at.  I'm ignoring Klitschko because I don't think that fight will happen because Klitschko gets nothing from it.

I doubt fury will beat Klitschko in the rematch. its set up for Klitchsko v Joshua which is just a bit early for him. joshua could be a very good champion for a very long time. I worry about kids becoming world champions though as they rarely stay there.

When Mike Tyson was in his pomp 86-89 the one thing that was often overlooked was his hand speed. Yes he could poleaxe a boxer with a shot but only because many opponents couldn't see it coming.

But that's just it. Winning this time for Klitschko needs to be in a very quick knock out for him to be able to retire. Otherwise his reputation will go with the fury defeat. that's what he'll be remembered for in the short to mid-term. Wins this and he has little choice to agree to a bum - which makes no sense for him at this stage and will add nothing - to a third fight with Fury - which allows him to go out with a reputation restored and the defeat as just one bad night but it opens him up another defeat that will leave him looking like a poor champion in a poor era. joshua is the last thing he probably wants but may need to risk if he cares about how he will be perceived.

Although the quality of fighters is not the level it was during the era of Ali, Foreman etc. at least there is some genuine excitement back in the division.  There are six fighters now around that top bracket who should provide massive fights should they meet.

I'm very curious about the Khan vs Canelo fight. Khan has been written off in places, but he's talking about the fight in the right way. If he can keep his bravery in check he can definitely win the fight.

It is but when you think about it it is only, what, a stone? Yes it does make a difference in boxing but shouldn't in terms of being able to beat someone over the distance.

If kennedy ups the work rate for the last 2 rounds he'll win this. Or, have a breather for a minute but keep the belgian working then the latter will be knackered in the last 90 seconds and ripe to be knocked out.

It was a bit of a step up for Parker fighting Takam. I don't think he had an off night he just fought a better opponent than previously. That's why i don't think he is quite ready yet for a title fight, I think he needs a couple more fights against top 6 or so ranked opponents first.

Was it me but I didn't think David Haye looked at all in the peak of condition last night. Enough to beat a nobody like that but against Joshua or Fury or Klitsckho he might have problems. Haye always has that smug look on his face which is deeply irritating but he needs to face a much better standard of opponent than a washed up 44 year old Shannon Briggs if he is to get back to the top tier of that division.

More than a little disappointing to see Blackwell calling Eubank inhuman for holding a press conference when he did after their fight . There appeared to be nothing but sincerity in either Jnr or Snr's actions or concerns for Blackwell. Not sure why he had to come and out and say anything at all.

Pro boxers allowed at Rio Olympics, I think it's a stupid decision.

Depends how much difference it's going to make really, I'm not sure anyone meaningful will go for it given the qualifying event they'd need to enter to get to the olympics is in about 4-5 weeks.  If any of them have a pro fight scheduled in the next 3-4 months you can write them off as well.  I think you'll find it's the prizefighter type boxers who will show an interest rather than the top end and I'm not sure how much difference in quality there will between them and the top amateurs in this format.

it's 2020 I'd be worried for where I suspect you'd be looking at mostly young pro's if this isn't reversed which would largely see the end of amateur boxing as anything other than a step into the pro circuit.

The majority of 'pro sports' in general really.  If the Olympic gold isn't the biggest achievement in the particular format of the sport, then it shouldn't be in it.

I'll happily admit that I'm a bit of a fair weather boxing fan, I just can't get interested in the lower level stuff, much like non-league football holds no real attraction for me.

That said, Joshua really does look the real deal every time I've seen him, his hand speed and accuracy would be good 2-3 weight division down, in the heavyweights he just looks like he's toying with people.  The guy today (who had one hell of a chin to be fair) looked like he was in slo-mo the difference was that stark.  To that end I reckon a focused Joshua who is kept working hard and fighting to his plans will comfortably unify the division and go down as a genuine great of this era, he's got absolutely everything to be as good as he wants to be.

Thought GGG looked quite ordinary at times tonight and I would think there are a few out there who would fancy a fight against him after seeing how many times Brook caught him.

Looking at it rationally it was like how we invariably used to play against Manchester United back in the days when we were top six and they were top two. We'd come out swinging, they contained us, then stepped up a gear.

Oh I don't know. Brook's a quality world champ and GGG looked a step above.

He did, but I think the weight difference played a big part in that as GGG was able to manhandle him at times.  GGG's awesome power was evident throughout, but Brook did land quite a lot and if you factor in the extra power a natural middleweight would have, I think there are a few who might see a chance.  As it was said in commentary, the only real chink in GGG's armour is that he does not move his head at all.
Title: Re: Boxing thread 2016
Post by: paul_e on September 11, 2016, 03:50:13 PM
I'd say if the fight might have gone differently if Brook had done 2-3 warm up fights at that weight first.  I think he needed to get used to the extra power in a competitive environment and work on his own power.  He landed more than enough clean shots to put golovkin down but there just wasn't the power behind them.  I suspect Brook will step down one from here and I think he'll do very well.

From what I'm reading im gathering its a mental issue rather than physical. He doesn't deem the most stable of blokes and I'd worry about where he would go from here.

I thoroughly dislike the bloke but I hope he gets the treatment he needs and can come back from it.

Right decision reached though there was quite a disparity on the cards.  Crolla did seem to be getting some momentum, but that was all taken away when he got caught in the sixth.  He just didn't seem to have much in the tank after that.

Quote
The world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who last week pulled out of his proposed rematch with Wladimir Klitschko citing mental health issues, has reportedly tested positive for cocaine.

Fury, who holds the WBA and WBO world titles, was said to have been informed on Thursday night that his A sample from a random urine test on 22 September had tested positive for the substance benzoylecgonine, the central compound found in cocaine. Fury pulled out of the rematch a day after the test.

The news was broken by ESPN, which quoted a letter from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (Vada) president, Dr Margaret Goodman, to representatives for Fury, Klitschko, the British Boxing Board of Control and the United States’ Association of Boxing Commissions. In it Goodman wrote: “This letter is to advise you that the ‘A’ sample urine specimen number 4006253 collected from Tyson Fury on September 22, 2016 in Lancaster, England through his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association program has been analysed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, stimulants and drugs of abuse. The results of the analysis are as follows: Adverse. Urine specimen contains benzoylecgonine.”

However in an email to the Guardian, Goodman said that Vada would not be commenting on story and that they “do not release results publicly unless requested by the athlete”. Even if the positive test is confirmed Fury is unlikely to face a ban from competing as cocaine is not prohibited when it is taken out of competition under World Anti-Doping Agency rules. However with the WBO having requested he provide evidence that he was “mentally unfit” to fight against Klitschko by Wednesday, and the IBO having also asked him for a medical report, the 28-year-old from Morecambe still faces the prospect of losing one or more of his world title belts before he next steps in the ring. Separately Fury also has a UK Anti-Doping investigation hanging over him after a sample tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone last year. However he denies any wrongdoing and is contesting those charges.

Fury won the world title with a convincing points victory over Klitschko last November but since then he has made headlines for what he has done outside the ring. His rematch against Klitschko was originally due to take place in Manchester during the summer but Fury pulled out citing an ankle injury. Earlier he had admitted he was five stone over his fighting weight having eaten and drunk to excess.

The fight was then rescheduled for 29 October but doubts were raised about it going ahead when Fury didn’t show up for the press conference in London on 10 September, claiming that his car had broken down on the motorway and his phone battery had also died. Those fears were realised less than a fortnight later when Fury was declared medically unfit to fight.

Bernd Bönte, Klitschko’s manager, responded to the cocaine claim by telling ESPN: “I think Fury is probably the most unworthy heavyweight champion in history, not only because of this situation but because of the whole package of his sexist comments, his antisemitic comments and his homophobic comments that have been [well documented].”

It was widely reported that Fury had severe depression, with a statement from Hennessy Sports saying he was “devastated” when the rematch was called off. A statement released last week added: “Medical specialists have advised that the condition is too severe to allow him to participate in the rematch and that he will require treatment before going back into the ring. Tyson will now immediately undergo the treatment he needs to make a full recovery.”

Neither Fury’s representatives nor the BBBC were available for comment when contacted by the Guardian. A Ukad spokesperson said: “UK Anti-Doping will not discuss or disclose information relating to cases, until due legal process has been completed.”

Last nights 'performance' by Bellew is the perfect ammo for the anti boxing lobby - he was completely unhinged in the way he fought with basically no defence and his behaviour after was that of a man off his head.

Would go as far to say he gives Fury a rival as the biggest moron in boxing, not a fan of the way Haye sells his fights but sincerely hope deals with Bellew if the Angry Lego Man gets his wish for the fight to happen.

Neither really do the sport of boxing proud, but I imagine there will be a lot of attention around Bellew v Haye now it has been announced.  I think David Haye would have been World Champion for many years had he stayed at Cruiserweight and although the fight is at heavyweight, they are both around that size and if Haye has got anything left in the tank I think he will stop Bellew.

The build up to the fight is going to be pretty classless I would imagine.

Haye has always been a tool, from the no publicity is bad publicity school of marketing his fights, however has always been a talented fighter albeit not big enough to dominate heavyweight.

Bellew on the other hand is an unhinged journeyman whose behaviour after his last fight should have asked questions about his fitness between the ears to fight.

Different type of fight but klitschko is getting a bit old now, I suspect AJ will be too quick for him, that's why I think one of the younger guys will be a better fight.  That said if that one goes ahead and he wins it'll put that question to bed.
