Title: Aston Villa vs West Ham Boxing Day Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Bad English on December 22, 2015, 08:54:05 AM
We need 30 points from this one.  But I will be happy with three.

I will be in attendance with she-who-must-be-obeyed and my dad so I am expecting to see spanking of the World Cup-winning, bubble-blowing, chirpy Cockerney, jellied-eel slurping, knees-up lahvin' Kit-Stealers.

3-1 to the mighty Villa.

We are getting picked up from somewhere along the Lichfield Road after the game but will never "beat the traffic" while we are at Villa Park. I might give a few "the wankers" though.

Sorry but nah!

IMHO this team is incapable of beating anyone in the top two tiers of English football. They just don't have it in them.

Probably another draw if we are on something like our 'A game'.

I don't think they're good enough to beat anybody in League football.

First time I've gone for a Villa win in a long time. Attack attack attack.... they have lots of injuries too so no excuses, we must go for it. 3-2.

I would go with:

                           Guzan

Hutton       Okore    Lescott         ?

                   Veretout     Gana

Sinclair                     Gil              Ayew

                            Gestede

Subs: Bunn, Clark, Richardson, Westwood, Sanchez, Traore, Grealish

I would prefer Richards at RB but don't think he will be fit.  I can't bring myself to consider the options at left back, but I am guessing it will be Bacuna again.  Gestede is in as he is the only option.

I am really feeling positive about this one.* It's Boxing Day, we're at home, the team is showing signs of fight, the Kit-Stealers are not at full-strength, Rémi Garde is slowly putting his ideas in place...

*I really, really shouldn't though, it'll be less depressing at FT.

They are there for the takingbut Villa Park is a tricky ground and we never seem to win there. I think I've been there more than any other ground and still can barely remember a victory. We did have a 2-2 earlier in the year I seem to remember. Anyway, because of that, and we don't travel at all well to B6, I'm going for the obligatory 1-3.

Moses, Payet, Sakho and (hopefully) Lanzini out for them, but Andy Carroll may be back. He doesn't score that many (that's jinxed it then) but he's a handful, especially for our defence. If he plays we'll draw, if he doesn't we'll win. I'm going 2-1 to us

A guy I work with is taking his family of six on a four-hour round trip to the game. Not a single Villa fan amongst them, just fancied a boxing day trip to the football.

Hopefully the rest of the team would have seen the shift that Ayew put in and think that perhaps they could have a go as well ::)

I like sinclair, but Adama deserves a go, "team player" or not. Maybe when they "trip" him, yellow cards might happen, so they have to keep back.

Yep, fantasy land, but I think a win is there, if Villa want it.

A must win. If we can't win a game like this we're well and truly done for. We've got a couple of players in some reasonable form. I think we've got something to build on from the second half at the weekend. We've a reasonable record at VP against them.

2-1 Villa. An absolute arse clencher of a game probably, but we'll scrape it I think. The key then would be how we follow it up and whether we can build on a result.

This is a crucial game now.

We have at least started to draw a few games lately so that should've increased confidence slightly.

If you think back to West Ham home games in recent times we beat them under Lambert to kick start our great escape of 12/13 and last year's win pretty much secured safety.

Also players West Ham will have missing: Winston Reid, Payet, Victor Moses Sakho, Lanzini. Pretty mucg their five best players.

It is a good squad though, the line up they put out v Swansea was very solid so it will be hard work to score past them.

Also worried they have a powehouse midfield that will be too much for our powderpuff trio.

1-1.

expect though that the side that finished against Newcastle, will start this one.

Thats just fantasy - WHam will probably mark Ayew out of the game and will kick Traore off the pitch and get a man sent off for their trouble.

So I'm going with 2 -1 Veretout and Bacuna for us, (and still) Geoff Hurst for them.

Doing a bit of reminiscing and, in so doing, probably giving away the fact that I'm turning 60 in a few days time! I was thinking of past Christmas holiday games at Villa Park and I particularly remember going to a game against West Ham in 1965 that was abandoned due to a frozen pitch after 30 minutes. It was 0-0 at the time and the game was replayed in February with Villa losing 2-1. These were the days when you played the same club, home and away, over two consecutive days at Christmas and the abandoned home match was played on December 27th, the day after Boxing Day. The December 28th return fixture at Upton Park was postponed and rearranged for March. We lost that one 4-2.

I was nine years old at the time but remember Hurst, Moore and Peters playing for the Hammers and also a Villa fan coming on to the pitch when the referee took the players off pitch and, following the announcement of the abandonment, trying to beckon fellow Holte Enders to follow him.

Happy days!

Think veretout can be our driving force from midfield in the mould of sir Dennis Mortimer.

I know this is not the right thread but here goes anyway. I recently went on a tour of Villa Park. One of the things that really struck me was this. We were shown the players lounge and the guy showed us 2 tv's where the players can relax after the game and watch football together. The newcomers apparently sit around one tv and the older lot watch the other one. They are at opposite ends of the lounge and he said hardly a word is spoken between the two sides. This was allowed to happen under Sherwoods watch. That was 3 weeks ago. I hope to god Remi has addressed this situation now. It's obvious to me that if we are to have any chance of surviving this season then the players have to be united and battle for each other. (Leicester spring to mind) I will be looking for signs today that the boys have bonded and are in it together. We will do our bit as ever. Over to you then players.

Probably the area around the church / Witton Arms / Flyover beneath the Expressway. Then a short walk to the left of the Holte pub and into the Trinity.

I will be there today.  This is not a good omen - I haven't seen a home league win in almost 10 years (I do live in Asia...)  My infrequent visits home usually coincide with games against Man U or other unbeatable sides like Wigan and Wolves...  Anyway, the last win I saw just happened to be against West Ham - John Carew's home debut.  So today we lift the curse - a 2.0 win.  Come on!!!!

Here's hoping your visit home is a happy one with 3 points Vic.

I am rejuvenated and think a little run may have begun last week.
A win today, a massive confidence boost and then onwards.

I have booked a taxi for 1pm. Am meeting up with brother outside Trinity  entrance A (adjacent to Holte). Could say hello outside!

We won't have a seller there. You'll have to nip over to my corner.

Darren I will look for you.  I am still not convinced that Damon will be allowed the time off by his bosses, the situation in Cumbria being the way it is.

I played this fixture last week and we draw 1-1 with a Grealish header

Jack never heads the ball. This may be to do with his hairstyle.

And he never plays either.

I'm doing my bit for the grass roots by sitting on the no11 as I type. It's a lovely bus.

Big enough stretch of water by Spaghetti Junction. He can just nip down there and pretend. He'll be able to find someone at the game with a northern accent to act as random distressed northerner.

Buy one from our Tyler (on the other side of the road from the church) in the interests of Conway Mods solidarity.

West Ham haven't won for a few games, and Andy Carroll is supposedly back, so I reckon 3-1 to them.

I'm in Surfers Paradise Oz looking at this thread and clinging to the fact that we passed a place called 'VillaWood' this afternoon as some sort of omen of a win today.......... Any team news?
