Kicks off tonight and it's about time we won this again.
First ever winners, Martin bloody Chivers, Jesus saves but Graydon scores from the rebound, Brian Little and Chris Nicholl with a 350 yard screamer, Deano and Dalian (wheres your treble gone Ferguson?), Savo on the run lets fly from 250 yards, Phil cheating Manure supporting bottler Dowd.
Round Two draw on Thursday night straight after the Doncaster v Leeds tie.

Still struggling to muster up any enthusiasm for cup competitions at present. I'm sure it'll pass.
-
Do we enter the fray in Rd 2 or 3 ?
-
Pretty sure it's round 2. Bradford away please so we can fuck the fuckers.
-
Lovely picture, just set that as my desktop background, such wonderful memories which bring a tear to my eye I have to say
-
Yeah, Round 2 as we're not in Europe.
Will probably go to this if we're drawn at home. Hopefully we'll draw a team I've never seen us play before.
-
Are West Ham in Round 2 or Round 3? If it is Round 3 it seems a little unfair as they aren't in Europe anymore.
-
I have us down to win this!
Bradford City at VP - 9-0 please...
-

It will have to be round three as otherwise the numbers in the draw won't balance.
-
Love the pic. I remember being behind the goal as the Grayder stepped up. A pissed up kid next to me couldn't watch but I could hear him pleading for us to score. Couldn't believe it when it went in.
It was the begining of the most wonderful period in my supporting history.
-
We enter in round two. Before anyone asks, we can't draw any Premier League team, Small Heath or Wolves (if they get through) as they'll be seeded.
-
When do Citeh join in? Would be nice if we drew them at home in Delph's first game for them
-
All the teams involved in Europe (even West Ham, who are already out) enter in Round Three.
-
A cup run is never a bad thing, but until we rack those points up in the league and look like a team who will have no worries about fighting the drop then I'm not too bothered about this. The FA Cup is the one I would still like us to get given the choice.
-

They've probably done it so clubs competing in the Champions League at the quarter final stage. Or semi final.
-
Northampton away please
-
Newport, Dagenham, Fleetwood, Stevenage, Yeovil, Burton Albion or Morecambe - i.e. a team we have never faced in a competitive match.; though not many of them will survive Round 1
-
Home to Bristol Rovers please.
-
Rochdale away, once they've seen off Coventry tonight.
-
Home to Bristol Rovers please.
Away to Bristol Rovers ... I live in Bristol.
Just bumped into some Bluenoses. Had the day off and had a wander around Bristol Harbourside with Mrs R and youngest son. Then headed to The Welly on Gloucester Road for a pint and a pie - cracking Bath Ales pub near the Memorial Ground.
A couple of Rovers fans drifted in, then a few Bluenoses trolled in.
Their new crest/badge is shocking - as I pointed out to one stood at the bar. A low rent fake Rangers badge is what it looks like. Is there nothing about that club and their fans that is not shoddy/downright shite?
-
Rochdale away, once they've seen off Coventry tonight.
Oldham away preferably but Rochdale or Bury would suffice.

Yep throw Bolton and Wigan into that mix and it's a nice night out after work for those of us exiled up here.
-
A trip to Highbury Stadium please.

Was right in the line of flight of Chris Nichols shot from when it left his boot to when it ended up in the net at old Trafford in 77.
Come on villa
-
I lived for a while near Brookmans Park where the eponymous hotel was owned by Martin Chivers. On my first visit he was working behind the bar and he was very happy to talk about the League Cup final against the Villa. Whether or not he was being kind to me on declaring I was at the time of the final a 13 year old attending Wembley for the first time he insisted that the best team lost that day. Although disappointed the memory of that game has stayed with me only outdone by the semi- final victory over Man Utd at Villa Park, still the best match I ever attended.

The semi vs ManU was indeed a total stormer. Looking back, I realise how privileged I was to be there.
Apart from that my best League Cup memory was the 1994 3-1 defeat of odds-on favourites, Ferguson's boys. Oh so sweet!

I missed that. I assumed we were knocked out after Everton beat us in the semi final

It's up there with the 1887 league & cup double before the league even started and 1972 European Cup Win when we were in the 3rd division !

Exeter away please

Cork City away.

I am looking forward to an overnighter in Walsall or Burton!

Fair enough Mr Aftab, and we must all get our jollies where we may in these bleak, benighted days, but who do you want us play in the League Cup?
-
Bloody hell Rovers, I can't rely on you for anything.

Exeter away please
On a midweek night? Time to put the sherry away sir

I completely agree, I remember that glorious night so well. The noise was still ringing in my ears at school the next morning. What a bloody night that was. UTV

ha, fat fingers on Ipad mini = typo. Corrected

I would have liked a trip to Coventry seeing as they lied and aren't coming back like they promised. So after last night by default I will take Rochdale as it would be a new ground to visit.

Would like us to get Brighton away just because I live there at the moment, then again that might be tricky so would settle for a home tie against them ;)

We have never been too big for the League Cup, and we're certainly not now.

That was my choice on a previous page, seeing as I only live 2 miles from Spotland. Would really like to give them some money as it was due to them that my 2 lads and me got to see the Cup Final - I know, was that such a blessing !!! We'd get about 3200 tickets as well.
-
Good news, two of the last 3 teams to beat us in the League Cup are already out.
So it must be our year for the League Cup.
I wouldn't mind Rochdale home or away.
-
Bury at home. I like to tick off a new team that i've never seen us play before.
-
A home draw or an away ground that i haven't been to.

Seeds for the draw pretty much decided now with just Doncaster v Leeds to come.

I've seen us play three of your list, you may have forgotten them seeing as you don't miss many.
I think Peterborough was the six-nil League Cup win when Draper either scored or set up a vaguely controversial flicked up free kick. Burton we played in a friendly might have been Lambert's first game. Preston we hammered five-nil, all five goals were screamers including a couple of typical Hitzlsperger smashes.
-
West Brom seeded! How come?

Cos they'm the Pride of the Midlands, ay thay?

We played Rotherham as recently as this time two years ago - that game when Delph scored a brilliant volley following one of the best moves I'd seen us put together in years.

All 3 in that game were good goals from what I remember, Weimann and Benteke maybe?
-
Yup, Weimann's a curler from 25 yards and I can't really remember Benteke's.
I'll guess it was a header.
-
Was indeed, towering header into the top corner from a gabby cross - http://www.soccer-blogger.com/2013/08/28/aston-villa-vs-rotherham-3-0-highlights-capital-one-cup-2013-weimann-benteke-delph-goals-video/
The Weimann goal was the one I remembered, absolute worldy of a strike, one of those that goes into row z 99 times in a 100.

I remember that Peterborough game, they had 2 sent off, at least one was harsh iirc, and some of there fans got a bit upset as the goals went in, and the red cards, and a few tried a mini pitch invasion. The free kick was a cracker. 95/96, so a good omen if we draw them again. We only drew the second leg 1-1 though so home draw please.

Ah yeah. Remember the game. Don't remember TFLP's goal though but recall that we won fairly easily after an unconvincing start. Their manager looked even fatter in real life than he does on the telly.
-
I was stupid enough to do the away leg of the Peterborough match as well.

Not sure if anyone has said it but "This is our cup..... the League Cup is ours"

Well it will be the 20th anniversary year of when we last won it so why not.

I've seen us play the first two on that list on the way to LC finals. 70/71 we beat Carlisle at home in R4. 74/5 we were away to Hartlepool in R4. I remember going on the travellers club coach and the coach door was parked right next to the turnstile and we were filed straight in and out after the game. Never been there since. I must visit Hartlepool again and see what the town is like in case I missed anything.

As I recall, the biggest cheer of the night was when the other scores were being announced and Man U had lost 3-0 at home to York.

No, it was Alan Smith.
Agree with the sentiment though. Hate it when H&V people appear in the media.

Twat doing the draw announced West brom as the 96 winners.
-
I make that nine home draws in a row.

Us, Walsall, Baggies, Wolves and The Noses all drawn at home.
How are they going to arrange this ?? I can't see the Police being too happy.

BBC Football don't seem to doing live updates on this draw...

Us, Walsall, Baggies, Wolves and The Noses all drawn at home.

Us and Wolves home one night; Stripeys, Small Heath & Walsall the other; just like Saturdays.
-
The rest of will do well to get 20k combined on the gate.
-
Us, Walsall and wolves one night, blues and baggies the other is the simple solution and then hope that sky shift us or wolves to the Thursday.

Why? They playing at the NIA that week?

There's no need even for that - we usually play the same day as Wolves.

Oh I know, it just makes it a touch simpler
-
I don't want to play on a Thursday when we have a game at the weekend.
Anyway. I fail to see how arranging a Villa cup game (25,000 at a push) and a Wolves cup game (10,000?) is any less simple than arranging for Villa to play in front of 35-40K and Wolves to host 25,000+ in league games like they do most Saturdays.
-
What's the date?
-
Is it the first time all 5 West Midland teams have been drawn at home? Not counting Coventry clearly.
-
Twat doing the draw announced West brom as the 96 winners.
It's a shame, a crying shame
When our past is buried
And our victories go un-named.
-
To be fair they did refer to us as '5 times winners' twice.
-
May I be the first to say that I want Arsenal in the final?
-
The last time we played them at home was the first time I had seen a match not standing on the Holte End, I was in the North Stand I'm sure you will be glad to hear :))
We beat them 1-0 with Dwight Yorke, our top scorer that season, getting the goal.
-
May I be the first to say that I want Arsenal in the final?
I'd rather play them in the Third Round, as they'd likely play their reserves.
-
No, the final please. in fact I want them in every round of this Cup after Notts County and every round of the FA Cup.
-
To be fair they did refer to us as '5 times winners' twice.
It's always good to report facts!
-
Hopefully it'll be an out-of-date fact by March.

I tell a joke
I toss a line
To no-one there
Who can see me alive
I'm not one to give up
But I feel I'm at a loss
And I've become invisible.
-
Wonder if this will be on TV. I always think we have a great chance of winning this cup, probably because it feels like we'll never win the FA Cup again and the league is out of the question.

On a Villa Park night when the weather was just like today- (ie peeing it down for all you folks in warmer climes information) all the omens are there I tells ye!
Yep we'll lose unluckily to a Cockney club in the final!
-
25 Aug with sha home same evening , how will the OB cope

I remember a league game against them in 1991-92 (I think) where 3 players (can't recall who they were) lined up to take a free kick and all of them ran over the ball leaving no-one to take it.

West Brom play the previous Sunday so I expect their League Cup game to be on the Wednesday, along with Small Heath and Walsall, with Villa and Wolves on the Tuesday.

That was the FA Cup. Only LC Games I can remember were back in the 80s when they were a top flight team. They beat us all three league games at their place, a couple were pastings, did the LC double over us. The only win I can remember at their place was during the same early 80s when we won 6-0.
-
Could be an interesting game. Seen a bit of Notts County over last couple of years (only went down to watch originally to see what the hype was about with this chap called Grealish). Last year, they were terrible. Filled their squad with players who were heading for retirement and predictably ran out of gas in November and they went down.
Moniz has brought in nearly 20 new players over the summer so they will be a completely different prospect, especially as he has promised to attack. They've done well to get people like Jon Stead in as well as a few younger players from around Europe. They fancy a tilt at promotion from league 2.
Obviously we should beat them but we should have beaten Orient last year.

I was in the shop in town earlier to buy a Leicester ticket and asked when the Notts Co game went on sale. He didn't have a clue when. Not very helpful but at least he was honest!

Sod all to do with Notts County, but this sticker always amuses me.

There's two live games listed now in the link I posted. We're not one if them

Seen it listed on the BBC as being Tuesday 25th but nothing on the OS yet.
Hopefully they'll be cheap tickets again!

From PRAVDA
The date of Villa's second round Capital One Cup game has now been confirmed.
We were drawn to face League Two Notts County on home soil here at Villa Park.
The game will be played on Tuesday August 25.
It will have a 7.45pm kick-off.
The last time we faced County was in the FA Cup in January 1997 on home soil, a match we won 3-0 thanks to goals from Dwight Yorke [2] and Ugo Ehiogu.
This latest encounter will see the return to B6 of Graham Burke and the renewing of acquaintances for Jack Grealish, who spent time on loan at Meadow Lane during the 2013/14 campaign.
The League Two Magpies were relegated last term and are managed by Dutch coach Ricardo Moniz.
Villa have won the trophy five times - in 1961, 1975, 1977, 1994 and 1996.
Our ticket and hospitality details will be announced soon.

Interesting how WMP couldn't deal with Villa v ManUre and a couple of hundred EDL twats in Walsall on the same day, but can deal with these on the same night.
Villa v Notts Co
small heath v Gillingham
Walsall v Brighton
Bitters v Port Vale
Wolves v Barnet
-
Very pleased with this draw, and wouldn't mind seeing the manager mix the line up a bit here since we have a few more options and it will keep the first teamers (if there are such things at this point) on their toes. Would give Bunn a go for example.

For "in the interest of enhancing the atmosphere" read; "in order to save a few quid on staffing costs"
-
They could go further and close the top tiers of the North, Witton and Holte. They'll be less than 20,000 there.
-
£17 in the Trinity £12 everywhere else... Why??

Hoping for a line up like that, should be more than good enough.
-
Its too early to be resting players particularly when they need game time to gel...its a free hit that could build confidence and fitness so I'd hope TS doesn't rest any of the new guys for this one.

Why doesn't anyone have to provide answers to situations like this?

Any news on pricing yet?
If its £10 adults and £5 kids then I'll be going with 3 kids, otherwise no
-
Match Ticket Prices
Adults £12 to £17
Under 18s £5
-
£15 adult no OAP concessions in Holte
-
Why didn't the club look at the Orient game last season and think about how they could avoid another sub 18,000 gate? Like junx pointed out, £10/£5 across the board would have been attractive pricing.

It could be that Notts County didn't want the prices that low. Both clubs have to agree the prices.
-
Paid £15 for the Holte. Seems reasonably priced to me.
-
Paid £15 for the Holte. Seems reasonably priced to me.
And me. Cheaper than it is to sit at Kiddy for a Conference game.
-
Yep, £22 for me and the boy to sit right on half way.
Had a look the other day at the same for a Cheltenham Town Conference game and that would have cost £36.
Looking forward to it, hope Traore gets a run out!
-
Luton v Stoke is £22 across the board.
-
And Lower North is cheaper than standing at Kiddy. I don't have a problem with our cup prices.
-
The prices are incredibly fair and Remember when we reach the final, attendance at such games will be critical if you want to secure a ticket
-
The prices are not that unreasonable, just saying that they're not attractive enough to get more bodies through the gates. A 25,000+ crowd for instance would generate a bit more atmosphere than a sub 18,000, which we got for Orient last season.
-
Crowd will be low anyway due to holiday season and people being away or having other family stuff to do. Win tomorrow and the gate may be boosted or people may hold back and go for a Sunderland ticket instead if they can't afford both.

I'm not sure that prices have a massive impact on gates for these games - certainly not enough to raise them by over a third.
-
Hopefully the likes of Gil and Traore get a run out. That should put some bums on seats.

And a few Notts players on their arses too.

I really want Sherwood to pick a team to play an open expansive game design to blow Notts County away. In all three games we have started conservatively design to stop the opponent from playing as opposed to letting them worry about us. There will be no reason to have any such concerns on Tuesday. A big win in the cup and a morale boosting win at the weekend in the league is required to get us going again.
-
We need to progress in this cup so nothing too reckless please . County won't just be blown away and a defeat if we go all gung ho could be massively detrimental.
I'd rather we set up normally and get the juices of the likes of Veretout, Ayew and Gana flowing.
This is a marathon not a sprint.
-
Agree with Toronto. This is an opportunity for us to really open up. If we can't attack a team who are 16th in League 2 then I'm not sure when we can.
Or have we been totally bled of all hope by TSM2 who continually hyped up the opposition, no matter how many Leagues below us they were?
-
We might as well use this as the pre-match thread
Can a mod please sticky this and amend the title?
-
Us 8 (eight) Them 1

Do you really think that we were conservative in our approach at the start yesterday cos I certainly didn't.

Get Gil, Traore, Grealish, Veretout and Ayew some much needed game time.
I'd go with
Westwood Gueye
Veretout
Traore Grealish Gil
Ayew

I think we were and Sherwood even said that was the goal to take the energy of the crowd out of it at the start. I'm not saying we didn't create anything but we certainly didn't impose ourselves as much as we should do vs Notts County. I just think in the first three games instead of playing our game the manager has set us up to stifle the opponents. I look at Swansea and how they try to play and they play their game irrespective of the opponent. I want is to develop that identity. Maybe we just haven't got one yet with so many new players.
-
I'd play;
Bunn
Hutton Richards Baker Amavi
Gueye Veretout
Traore Grealish Gil
Ayew
Steer, Clark, Bacuna, Sanchez, Green, Kozak, Gestede.

3-0 win

Thats pretty much how I see the team setting up once every one is settled and match fit...obvious question marks over GK, RB and CF. I'd also play a similar lineup against Sunderland with Guzan and Sanchez coming back in.
Horses for courses and all that, but as it stands this is how I see the team and squad being interchangeable...
Guzan (Bunn)
Bacuna (Hutton) Richards (Okore) Clark (Baker) Amavi
Veretout (Westwood) Gueye (Sanchez)
Traore Gil Grealish (Sinclair)
Ayew (Gestede)
-
I think Baker might come in. Possibly also The Scottish Cafu
-
Us 4 Them 0

Bunn
Hutton Richards Baker Richardson
Sanchez Vertout
Traore Gil Sinclair
Ayew

2-0 them loads of agro in bham before kick off

There won't be.
-
2-0 them loads of agro in bham before kick off
Sure the police can cope with one attendance of 18-19k, a couple of 10k, one 8k and a 1500....Notts will be the only opponent of the 5 who might bring 1000+
It's the equivalent of Villa & Walsall playing league games on the same night
-
Nah, it will murder tomorrow. I'm too scared to go into town and get the train to VP tomorrow.
-
I'd play;
Bunn
Hutton Richards Baker Amavi
Gueye Veretout
Traore Grealish Gil
Ayew
Steer, Clark, Bacuna, Sanchez, Green, Kozak, Gestede.
Same for me.
-
I'm swapping Gil for Grealish. Especially as Sherwood suggested he'd make a good "number 10" or words to that effect a few weeks back.
-
2-0
Traore
Sinclair
-
1-0 us, they will make a game of it.
Sinclair for the winner.
I'll be upset if gabby gets game time.
-
I'd rest Richards.
With his injury record, he must be due one soon, so lets not tempt fate tomorrow.
-

Is Senderos still around and fit to play?
If no, one of Richards or Baker will have to play.
I was hoping that Villa would have kept Donacien around to play in this one,

Can't remember his name but the big lad who played at centre half a bit in the preseason matches, might be worth a look.

Ive always been impressed by Donacien whenever I have seen him play. He is out on loan again which suggests he is not highly rated by the Villa boss. Or getting more experience maybe.
-
No pissing about with the team for this one; especially after the embarrassment v Leyton Orient last season.
I'd go Bunn, Bacuna, Richards, Clark, Amavi, Gueye, Sanchez, Traore, Grealish, Sinclair, Gestede - Subs: Guzan, Hutton, Baker, Veretout, Agbonlahor, Westwood, Ayew
4-0 to us
-
Even with reserves I'd expect there to be no trouble. Play Grealish, Gil, Traore, Veretout and Ayew to get their fitness and sharpness up. I want us to win but it's almost like a pre-season match too.

I'd go along with that but with Ayew instead of Gestede. It's the ideal game for Ayew to get himself on the scoresheet which in turn will help his confidence.

I am hoping for a decent run in this cup this season, so no slip ups at this stage. That said, it is a good chance to give some of the squad a run out. I would look at Bunn, Hutton, Baker, Veretout, Gil (if Fit) and Ayew all getting a run out.
-
Veretout, Ayew and Traore should definitely play. The former two definitely need the match time to get up to speed.
-
I like TaxDodger's line up but I'd want to use this game to get closer to our future first XI, not some game to give everybody a game to keep them interested. Bunn, Hutton and Baker deserve 90 minutes. Grealish, Veretout and Traore need the 90. No subs until the 75th minute unless things are going pear shaped, we really need this game to find our shape and a system that works because until now we've looked mainly clueless.
Bunn
Hutton Richards Baker Amavi
Gueye Sanchez
Traore Veretout Grealish
Ayew
Subs: Steer, Clark, Bacuna, Westwood, Gil, Sinclair, Gestede.
[/quote]
-
Not too fussed about what the back 4/5 will be as we know what to expect from most of those players.
I just really really want to see Grealish - Gil - Traore behind Ayew. Phwooooaaaaar!
-
Taking my lad to his first game, so praying for a goal fest with Adama and co running riot.
I'd start:
Bunn
Hutton Richards Clark Amavi
Veretout Westwood Sanchez
Ayew Kozak Adama
-
Bunn
Hutton Clark baker Bennett
Vertout Sanchez westwood Gil
Ayew gestede
-
A comfortable 3-0 win, Gestede 2 and Grealish.
-
Get all the new signings in and give GRealish and Gil a run out. 3-1 home win.
-
Taking my lad to his first game, so praying for a goal fest with Adama and co running riot.
Me too, and my daughter. Mine are 3 and 5, how old is your lad?
-
We need to find a way of playing that works for us and give certain attacking players minutes on the pitch
Guess Gil isn't match fit to start as not on bench Saturday
Adama grealish and Sinclair behind gestede or Ayew. Not sure which one. Gestede has looked very leaden footed so far. The striker role or roles is my biggest concern by far. Id rather we spent £15m on one player than gone for Ayew plus gestede. Someone like rondon for example
-
Play the strongest possible team Mr Sherwood. No messing we need to progress.
-
Heard earlier that there is to be a minute silence for those who died in the plane crash in Shoreham at all cup games tomorrow. I don't want to sound heartless about what was a terrible tragedy, but should there really be a minute silence at football games for it?
-
Why not? Footballers were among the dead. We had a minute's silence for the Queen Mother and she was old enough to remember Newcastle's last trophy.
-
I think its important we get the partnerships going tonight. That synergy and understanding is equally as important as fitness.
I would like to see Veretout and Gana as the midfield two, with Grealish in front. The back four I would keep the same, with the possible exception of Hutton for Bacuna. I'd give Bunn a go too.
Up top, Traore wide, with Ayew off Gestede.

I'm out tonight, so hoping for a pleasant suprise when I check the score. Hopefully Adama will get a game.

First game I'm going to this season (part timer).
Would be nice to see some of the new lads and hopefully Gil and Traore will both be playing.

Only 3 mate. He's showing interest lately, wears his kit when he plays on a Sunday morning, hates the Blues etc, so he's on the right path but I'm convinced he's expecting 'Villa Park' to be an actual park with swings and slides!
Hopefully the evening doesn't disappoint.

I think you give licence to Grealish and Ayew to interchange in drifting wide. Amavi is very strong going forwards too, so I don't think we'd be unbalanced.

Its a Roller-Coaster, that's for sure
-
I'd give Avarmi the night off, he's doen very well so far but its been a tough start and some of the players have faded badly as matches have progressed. I'd save him for Saturday.
-
We'll shit this lot. Villa 6 Them 1

Other than football, military aviation is my other passion, I've been going to airshows since 1996, as you say its a terrible tragedy but a minutes silence at football does seem a bit odd, there are enough airshows left this year for the organizers to do a tribute of some sort.
-
Tim Sherwood will ring the changes for tomorrow night's Capital One Cup clash with Notts County in a bid to freshen up his fringe players.
The Villa boss has stressed that his entire squad, barring those he has specifically told can move on, will be important this season especially if the club enjoys another trip to Wembley.
Admitting that some of the players who have started the first three league games of the season might be given a night off, Sherwood said: “We’ll make some changes as I think these boys have gone at it for the last three games so the other lads need an opportunity to play.”
That doesn’t mean Villa will be weakened, though.
The likes of Jordan Ayew, Jordan Veretout and Adama Traore are likely to play from the start while Alan Hutton and Nathan Baker could come into the backline.
Libor Kozak has travelled with the squad for the past two away games but has yet to make the matchday 18. He could feature at some point, too.
“The cup is very, very important,” said Sherwood.
“It’s an opportunity to win a trophy which is excellent.
“I think that’s a realistic target for us so I don’t see the competition as a distraction at all.
“This season is all about improving on the last one. That’s a must.
“But it would be nice if we could go to Wembley a couple of times again too.”
-
Regarding the silence, any tragedy that's high on the news agenda and public consciousness is going to demand some sort of gesture. It's only a minute of time, but I do feel it's as empty as the "thoughts and prayers for the family" rhetoric, trotted out by politicians and media commentators.
-
I think we'll see a very un-Villa like performance tonight, in that we will smash the shit out of them.
Traore, Gil and Ayew to get on the sheet in a 4-5 goal rout.
-
Heard earlier that there is to be a minute silence for those who died in the plane crash in Shoreham at all cup games tomorrow. I don't want to sound heartless about what was a terrible tragedy, but should there really be a minute silence at football games for it?
The Football League has announced that a minute’s silence will be observed prior to all Capital One Cup Round 2 matches as a mark of respect to those that lost their lives in the Shoreham air disaster, including Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, two young footballers who played for Worthing United FC.
Matthew, a goalkeeper, and Jacob a midfielder had been travelling to their Southern Combination Premier Division fixture when their vehicle was tragically struck by an aircraft as it crashed on to the A27.
Both men were supporters of Brighton and Hove Albion FC, the club where Matthew had also been employed for the last 7 years, most recently as a member of the ground staff. In April, Matthew and Jacob played for Brighton supporters’ team in the Robert Eaton Memorial Fund (REMF) match against Crystal Palace.
Commenting, Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of The Football League, said: “This minute’s silence will give football fans across the country the opportunity to pay their respects to Matthew, Jacob and all those who lost their lives in this terrible accident. On behalf of The Football League our condolences go to everybody at Brighton and Hove Albion, Worthing United and to all those outside of the football family who have been rocked by Saturday’s shocking events."
All 24 Capital One Cup Round 2 fixtures will be played on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th August 2015.

Blimey! I was not paying attention as Notts Co signed 16 in the summer. They have formerly rated players Roy Carroll, Scott Loach, Alan Smith, Izzy McLeod, Jon Stead and that Graham Burke.

Carroll, Smith and Stead must have a combined age of well in excess of 100!
We can always play the experience card in the unlikely event that they beat us...
-
If we aren't 4 goals up by half time I'm booing them off and not coming back up for the second half. Sherwood out.
-
Time for the annual rant at just how bad the League Cup organizers are at promoting their competition and awful TV coverage.
No wonder clubs treat it as a joke when the organizers do the same.
-
Alan Smith still plays!!!???? Bloody nora. I would have thought his legs would have turned to dust years ago. Does he slither across the pitch like a Delph?
-

Agree with that, though I think Gueye will get a rest, so I'd like to see Sanchez in there. One thing that really hurts lower league teams is pace, so I would go with a Traore, Ayew, Sinclair front three and really try and stretch them at the back.
-
Hmmmm no idea what formation we're using with that lineup!
-
What line up?
-
The Sanchez CB Experiment continues
-
Gabby has got the night off, thank fuck.
-
I'd guess Sanchez at CB and the most absurdly attacking midfield in the history of Aston villa
We will either thrash them or lose
-
It's murder in town with all 5 clubs at home!!!'!
Or I walked from Broad Street to New Street and yet to see any other fans other than villa
-
Bunn
Hutton
Baker
Sanchez
Richardson
Veretout
Gill
Traore
Ayew
Grealish
Sinclair
-
Sanchez, Veretout, Grealish, Gil, Sinclair, Ayew, Traore. I'm hopeful.
-
Adama starting guarantees a 10 goal victory.
-
So is that veretout holding with four attacking mids ahead of him and then Ayew? Grealish and Gil in the middle?
Bloody hell Tim. That's either confidence or lunacy
So defending set pieces against a div two team we'll have err baker and Hutton, plus Sanchez doing his best? I hope we keep the ball for most of the game!
-
Defenders are overrated evidently
-
I'm not sure if that front 5 have ever made a tackle between them.
-
8-4 to us is worth a fiver I reckon!
-
Fair to say the train ay exactly packed!
-
Is that 3-6-1? Baker Hutton Sanchez back 3, Richardson and Gil wrong backs, Veretout Grealish Traore Sinclair fighting it out in midfield and Ayew up top
-
Had a fiver on a Traore hat-trick at 100-1. FREE MONEY.
-
Had a fiver on a Traore hat-trick at 100-1. FREE MONEY.
No chance. He'll get at least 6!
-
3-2-4-1 I reckon, Sanchez and Veretout holding with Ayew up top, Sinclair and Traore wide.
-
I can't see it being three at the back, tho may be wrong. Would mean Hutton as a centre back plus either Richardson or Sanchez.
I guess Sanchez at CB in a four
-
Had a fiver on a Traore hat-trick at 100-1. FREE MONEY.
No chance. He'll get at least 6!
Bet on 3 or more so I win even in the unlikely event he only scores three or four.
