Must admit I am probably for the first time in six years....(this is Villa excited and nothing to do with my personal life).
-
Yes. This is Draperman-Savo-Tayls-Super Tommy exciting.
-
Yes
Post FA Cup I wanted the entire team sold and replaced. To be fair I would have kept Delph and Big Ben given the chance.
But it wasn't to be and we badly needed this clear out to happen.
-
Yep, I genuinly thought we'd be going down the MON route with Sherwood of tried and tested, run through walls for the manager but technically poor English players, instead were signing some of Europes highly rated youngsters... Naturally it could go all tit up but at the moment its exciting times indeed.
-
There's a definitely feeling of a clean sweep and in a good way. Much like Sir Brian of Little in 95. I don't know whether these players will work out for us, but unlike Lamberts first couple of summers, where we took a lot of lower level punts, or O Neill going for all too many aging, overpriced Premiership plodders, there's something a little more exciting about this window. The French league is a fairly decent standard with some affordable talent, and whilst we didn't have much luck with Jean Makoun the Second, or Berson, I don't think we've utilised that league, or the German league enough.
Sherwoods clearly identified where we're weak and set about making improvements on the squad. It also appears as if he's wanted to do his business quickly too.
When last season ended a lot was up in the air. It felt like we needed to shift maybe a dozen crap players, and bring in at least 8-10 decent players. It was that drastic. But having been ground and beaten down watching our club over the last 4 years most of us probably figured we'd scrimp on 4-5 underwhelming signings, probably from Spurs reserves. I'm really delighted the way the summer has panned out. Will we see an upturn in fortunes? Who knows. But I'm certainly feeling more confident about our summer than I have done for a good few years.
-
Nine in so far with the guts of another month to go before the window closes. Last weekend when they said that this week was going to be busy, they weren't bloody kidding!
-
I get the impression these players are going to have the same swagger as the manager which if nothing else will lead to some barnstorming moments this season.
-
Yes very. We have temper our expectations because this may not all come together starting with Bournemouth. But we have so many new toys and with it options that we are going to look completely different this season. It just got so very stale and now there is an immense freshness to it all. I hope fans get behind it and get their season tickets.
"Hold on to your seats!" as a former member of this parish used to say.
-
Extremely and fully agree with what Supertom says.
Can't be sure that it will definitely work as Newcastle have had several ropey moments with a similar approach but by God I wouldn't swap us trying for the world.
Definite feel of Brian Little's window this but perhaps even more exciting with the sheer number of new faces.
-
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YES
-

I fear next week that when we only sign one player I will be devastated
-
The Pointer Sisters!
-
Have to agree with TV, delighted with the signings so far but it will take time to gel so expect some good results and poor defeats early on. Hope and expect we are looking for another centre half and another striker then I expect that to be it. There is definitely something different in the air at VP with all the back room changes etc....
-
After the FA Cup final, the Delph telenovela, the move of Benteke, the signign of Crespo and the rumours about Adebayor, a former player by all accounts, I was very depressed. But now, with the signigns of Varetout and Gestede instead of Ade, yes, I am quite excited, we needed a bit of fresh air. I would like a new keeper too, now!
-
Definitely shades of '95
-
Like a babbies arm holding an Apple.
-
The Pointer Sisters!
We got rid of them ages ago.

Excited and nervous at the same time. New players to the Premiership which may take time to get off the ground but definitely some exciting prospects. Bring it on!
-
I'm completely unfazed.
Quite clearly we're going to win the league though.
-
Excited. Shame our first game isn't on telly as I couldn't get tickets.
-
Yes indeed - more excited than I thought possible when you're talking about the Villa and a transfer window.
The activity, the breadth of signings, surprises that really give me a lift , like Gestede.
I'm excited, I'm optimistic . . . . and I'm getting in front of myself!
-
Transfer deadline day is going to be boring though isn't it? All that pent up hope, only for a dawning realisation that we're not buying anyone as the clock ticks closer to midnight.
-

I'll be absolutely delighted not to be a part of that complete gong show. Hopefully we'll all be sitting back while everyone else panics to get deals done, with the only activity being that one or two players will leave the club that we need to move on.
-
Excited already, if we make another 1 or two signings I'll be ecstatic.
-
So excited a little bit of wee pops out when I think about where we could potentially be in a season or two
-
I'm feeling better about the start of the new season with all the new players we've got in well done to Tim for getting the players he wanted I can't wait for the season to start.
-
We'll be smuggling cockerels into the ground
-
I feel far more optimistic than in most recent years, tinged with a dash of caution. The caution is because there are a lot of unknown quantities, and if not all the signings are Sherwood's choices there is the chance he might take to them.
-
Today is the transfer deadline day for Baseball. Maybe Randy got his sports muddled up and that's why Villa have done so much business by the end of July.
-
As we walked away from Wembley stadium in May, and I distinctly remember saying to my mates that I would be happy if every last one of the wastrels who had let us down so badly were got rid of and we started again.
That's pretty much what is happening, and I am over the moon about it.
Vive la revolution !!
-
Cannot wait for the season to get underway, although I have prepared myself for a slow start to the campaign, I think come Xmas we could start firing on full cylinders.
-
Not excited yet because I'm a miserable git, but the clear-out was very much needed and a fresh impetuous required after the past few years of abject misery.
-
Yes. I just mentioned to my lad it feels like we have woken up from a 5 years long sleep and have belatedly remembered we are supposed to part of the entertainment industry.
Of course those urging patience are right but it's going to be fun watching this develop.
-
So excited. Fantastic pre-season!
-
I've Get Over Excited.
-
Just to puncture the excitement, Nathan Baker has signed...... A new contract.
-
Sweet Jeebus, I'm giddy this evening. Don't know anything about any of these players we are signing. But fcuk it, I feel good!
-
Looking forward to seeing the team in action tomorrow. Lot of players signed so let's hope they gel together and give us something shout about for a change next season. It's been a long 5 years.
-
Just to puncture the excitement, Nathan Baker has signed...... A new contract.
ah, you miserable old git, don't be like that. He's not that bad as a back up and left sided. It's still been a great day!!
-
Yes, which makes the inevitable crushing disappointment all the worse! ;)
-
We all just want to see decent, entertaining football on a reasonably consistent basis and hopefully a climb up the table - when you see the teams occupying 8th to about 10th in the league, it really should not be difficult, they are so ordinary. This feels like a new start and reminds me so much of Big Ron's first season and that never to be forgotten away day at Sheffield Wednesday, let's hope Bournemouth is a repeat of that
-
Just to puncture the excitement, Nathan Baker has signed...... A new contract.
Impossible, I was told by Twitter ITKs that he was off.
-
This summer's much needed Oneillectomy and Lambertectomy makes me want to move back to Brum more than I usually do at this time of the year.
-
I'm so excited I'll probably buy a season ticket!
-
I bought my season ticket the day after Delph left us. On my own as my friends had had enough.
I came home and was quite depressed that I was going on my own and had probably wasted £550.
I am so happy that I made that decision. I know it could all go tits up but I really like Sherwood and whatever happens, we are having a good go at it.
Reminds me of Big Ron's rebuilding.
-
Well that clear out was needed I hope we surprise a lot of people this if we it won't be the won't of trying something different
-
Precisely.
-
Tim has broken up a team/squad that is used to losing. The change in mentality at Bodymoor Heath must be massive. They will take time to settle, we will probably lose to Bournemouth BUT we now have a team whose hunger is matched with potential and Tom Fox who has set out a clear blue print of the way to move forward.
-
Honestly I couldn't be more excited for the season to start. What a turn around from just a couple weeks ago when Tekkers and the snake left us. UTV!
-
Uber excited
Given how poor the prem is if the team gels we could easily finish top half.
Patience is needed though
-
Excited 2.0
-

Top half
I'm thinking champions league that's how excited I am
Tim sherwoods claret n blue army
-
For the first time in several years I am actually looking forward to the season. We may have some early season teething problems with so many new players, but am confident that the calibre of players being signed will make us a far better squad this season.
-
Very excited, we might take a few games to gel but it is a great transfer window so far.
-
Excited! Tempered by the probability these signings will take time to become a team. It wouldn't surprise me if we started with a few losses as Villa 2.0 hits its stride. It usually takes teams who have had this big a clear out time to gel right? (I genuinely can't remember the last time we had a good clear out like this so I could be wrong).
-
Concerned.Big number of players to integrate, many untried in Premiership. Very difficult season ahead I fear.
-
And remember " you don't with anything with kids"
-

Whereas last summer we seemed to buy exclusively experienced Premier League players, some of whom had racked up hundred of matches.
And obviously that meant that last season went just fine.
-
We'll lose to Bournemouth.
It's just the Villa way whenever positivity pops up!
Last signing I was genuinely excited by was Darren Bent and before that Carew and Young. I've enjoyed this summers dealings but nothing's really grabbed like those deals did.
I think it's probably because back then we were in the top 6 and so weren't that far away from making the top 4 so you could dream those sort of signings could make the difference.
Now I'd be delighted with no threat of relegation whatsoever after the last 5 years and a nice comfortable mid table season which shows we're starting to build something again.
That will do for now. Takeover next summer please.
-

Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea etc seem to manage to integrate players without PL experience just fine.

You may be correct at the start, but I would rather this stance than what has been going on for many years, even in the MON era
-
I think we might be in for a fair few high scoring games this season.

To be fair they can do it a bit more gradually

I'm just happy that we're actually trying something different for the first time in a very very long time.
-
Short term, there will possibly be a few teething problems. Compare the newness of our squad to Bournemouth's who will possibly be more cohesive. The Villa squad hardly know each other in a footballing sense and possibly in a personal way. We'll want to at least see good signs and endeavour if the results aren't going our way in the first six-eight weeks, who knows we could be top 6? If not, after a while I feel it'll click into gear and when it does it'll be very, very exciting. I think Sherwood is highly capable of moulding all types of personalities together. I also like to think we have a lot of cover in this squad, more than I've witnessed in many years and it's a feature of this new intake of players. I do still want one more solid defender brought in perhaps and one let go. I feel we might be a bit injury prone in that area.
We're very much an unknown entity on the park right now compared to three weeks ago. Sherwood and Fox for their letdowns, still keep really impressing me at the helm. It'll be frustrating at times but I think this season is ultimately going to be a *lot* of fun. Mid table and improving onward into the following season. I'm excited.
-

mate we just got battered by a very good side on top of their game. It wasn't pretty, but to call them wastrels is harsh. Don't forget the performance against L'pool in the semi to get there.
-
It's my Birthday today and I would just like to thank my Uncle Tim Sherwood for buying me a new Aston Villa football team. You really shouldn't have but I'm glad you did.
-
The last few weeks have reminded me of an old Three Stooges movie when they bake a cake. Mo reads the cookery book and says "flour" Larry throws a bunch of flowers in the oven. Mo says "milk" so Shemp throws a bottle of milk in the oven. For good measure Mo throws in the cookery book and they close the oven door. Minutes later, the open the cooker and remove a perfect cake with lighted candles on the top. Good slapstick stuff.
The Villa cake will take a little while to bake and there will be howls of anguish in the first week or two, of that I am certain, but we have brought in players of better quality than we had and the club is clearly going about its business in an efficient positive manner. That will without doubt bring better results on the pitch. How much better only time will tell. What can be said with certainty is that the common denominator for the whole of the period since MON flounced out has been overall lack of quality in the squad. There have been exceptions of course but in the main the teams we have fielded have simply not been good enough and neither has their management and coaching. We must hold our nerve in the early days as the team gels and the period from November onwards will see us begin to achieve Premiership security upon which we can build. My prediction? 46 points and lots of goals, for and against. Bring it on.
-
We're acting like a football club instead of a corporate entertainments facility, so, yeah, it's mildly exciting.
-
Obviously a squad overhaul has its risks, but it is exciting. If we could just get in Cambiasso, a winger and a centre half I'd be happy.
-
Not excited yet as its still quite a lot on unknowns having to gel together as a team. That could take a while. luckily Amavi has already had a few games and Richards also. Gestede already plays in England too so he won't take time to get up to spped. But really its a lot of unknowns playing with players that have performed poorly as a team for a while.
You can argue either way whether it would have been better for a tougher start so we don't drop points to teams we should look to beat, but didn't because of a team not settled. Bournemouth away, however, is as tough as you'll get for an opening day. Small ground, fans up for it, players running into everything at 100 mph, it'll be like an away 3rd round FA Cup game against a lower league team. If they're not at the races that day they could get a beating 3 or 4, even 5. Today will be important. Today should, and probably will for an hour, be played as the first game of the season. Heavy training is done, now its game heads on.
Not excited, just wary and watchful. And hopeful.

I'm so excited, I could crush a grape

Yes. This time next week I'll be in Bouremouth!
-
It's great that most of these players are signing 5 year deals. It really feels like we're refreshing from the misery of the last two years. It also backs my view that whilst Benteke is brilliant, selling him and reinvesting the money across the squad could make us a much better team in the long run.
-

Bournemouth have made something like 6 signings this summer, though.

Birthday on Yorkshire Day ... A powerful combination, MLF. Enjoy, and see you before the ManU game.
-
Only concern is all these new players fitting together. It is a lot of changes for I summer.
-
I was about to say "No, not really - this is the Villa, excitement isn't a word that logically comes to mind...". However with this bunch of signings, I'm thinking differently mainly as they're (to me at least) largely unknown and as a result, it'll be good to see some new faces which is intriguing as well as exciting.
let's hope it all works out..!

Things seem a whole lot brighter now thats for sure, in the old days 2-3 new signings would be enough to get you a title shot, not these days as its still a closed shop but at least there should be some exciting games this season with a whole new mindset missing since the MON years.
-
Definitely excited but still short of a natural goalscorer, unless Gestede really makes the step up. A Bent circa 2011 character in there would make it look complete.
-

Not having a go at you Paul, but that comment, when compared to the everything that's happened from the last 18 months of O'Neil's tenure illustrates the damned if they do, damned if they don't nature of the contracts the club give out.
How much gnashing of teeth was there over the likes of Beye sitting on long term contracts earning £50-60K per week for f##k all. Howls repeated when Given and N'Zogbia signed similar contracts.
Then came Lambert. Most people on here apparently happy that we were only signing people on 3 year contracts. End of that season, "Why did we only sign Benteke on a 3 year contract, he's holding all the aces now." 12 months later "Vlaar's only got 12 months left on his 3 years. We should have signed him on 4 years or got an extension agreed before the world cup.
Now we're back to 5 year contracts for players who,Richards apart, have never played at this level before so in 6 months time we could be looking at paying Ayew £25K per week (pure guess) for 4 1/2 years.
Whatever they do they're backing a loser somewhere down the line.
Anyway, for what it's worth I don't see us being involved in too many 0-0 draws. It's going to flip from jaw droppingly fantastic, to watching through our fingers and back again, possibly within the same game.
When it clicks it will be fantastic and when it doesn't it won't be.

To be fair I think it makes much more sense to be handing out 5 year deals to young, potentially talented players like Amavi, Ayew etc than it did to say Shay Given. It seems likely that at least one or two will succeed, and hopefully more, so it stands to reason that we have as much control over their ultimate return as possible.
-
After watching our defensive frailties just now ....then no i'm not excited. Just worried.
Admittedly the back 4 that finished that won't be starting next week

That's the important bit. Why get worried about a situation that once the season starts won't repeat itself. We won't make 7 changes in a game and the defence in most cases will never change. The first choice players will be much better and will improve as they get used to each other. Now, I do think we could upgrade RB but Richards and Clark should be ok.

Mind you, the first choice central defensive pairing managed to concede within 30 seconds today.
I am far from convinced by the defence. I'd ideally like us to bring in another option at centre half. It looks more and more like Sherwood isn't intending on using Senderos much, so I'd look to move him on and bring someone else in.
I know I am starting to sound like I am going on about him, but Baker scares me a bit, I am not 100 percent convinced by Okore, and Richards seems to me unconvincing in that role (and is injury prone).
-
Baker is a back up and he can look good in spells next to the right partner. He looked decent next to Vlaar for a bit last season. I wouldn't at all be against a new partner for Richards to really challenge Clark or just be an upgrade to him.

I think Richards at CB will be Sherwood's blindspot just like MON buying fullbacks and then playing anyone who wasn't a fullback there.
Can't see us keeping many clean sheets but we have a lot more goals in us this season so we can still win games.

If it goes tits up we can all moan and say wtf has cockernee Tim done selling our lifelines in the like of Weimann and Lowton. Probably wrong those two (don't know matts wifes name) but we have had loads of players who are not quite good enough. Andi I thought may have done it but when you compare him to the 60k Charles he certainly did.
-
I think Sinclair could be a bit of a surprise package. He's slipped under the radar a bit, but I like him and I think he could reach double figures for league goals.
-
Sinclair seems to score goals but needs to realise he has defensive duties as well

I thought it was odd, given the level of tempered optimism here. Could have been written by Robbie Savage, just the standard Benteke / Delph gloom.
I hope, for my part, that so many new faces removes some of the stench of defeatism that's been hanging over the club for so long. It'll be refreshing having players not ground down by up to 4 years of relegation battles.
-
I'm flittering between being cautiously optimistic and optimistically pessimistic.
A few concerns...
We haven't got a settled CB pairing and still look all over the place at the back, and we'll continue to be prone to conceding goals from stupid mistakes.
We haven't got a proven PL goalscorer. Gestede, Ayew and Kozak have potential but there are big question marks over who and how we will play.
We've signed so many players that need to gel and hit the ground running...a few bad results early on could really knock their confidence. The pace of the PL could really take a few of these players by surprise so they need to get up to speed quickly.
-
The key to success (not struggling) this season is playing on the front foot and creating chances. The lack of chances created last season almost killed us.
-
Not one member of the media, local or national had any idea the players we were buying. They all had use linked with ex Spurs and other such shit English players. I don't give a damn about their opinion on how we'll do because they don't have the first clue.
-

That was what struck me about the Observer article. It's all write-ups from the fans' perspectives, not journos. But I guess, if you're not on forums like this all day long and get your infos from the mainstream media, you might get a different impression of the general mood amongst fans.

That was what struck me about the Observer article. It's all write-ups from the fans' perspectives, not journos. But I guess, if you're not on forums like this all day long and get your infos from the mainstream media, you might get a different impression of the general mood amongst fans.
Yeah I was surprised as well. But getting a miserable fan to write the Villa bit was probably a fair balance to the other Villa fan special Guardian ran saying we were the seasons surprise package.

I think Sinclair could be a bit of a surprise package. He's slipped under the radar a bit, but I like him and I think he could reach double figures for league goals.
Agreed.I hope he gets a striker's role ,rather than wide midfield,as he looks a very capable finisher .

Alan Smith in the Torygraph is slightly more excited than Pritchard. 16th.

I fail to see how anyone can begin to forecast where we might finish if we haven't finished our squad full and replacement. I genuinely can't call it. Sign a decent centre half and it'll change people's opinions again.

True but honestly peoples minds would change only if they dug a little deeper or had seen any of our new signings play. 90% of the non Villa following journos writing these predictions just see "Benteke & Delph left, that means Villa are in trouble."
Could end up being right but its also a bit lazy.

I know where we can get an experienced CB
Capped 50 times by his country ( scoring 5 goals) and appearing in 3 World Cups
Has FA Cup winners medal and CL losing finalist
and he's only 30.
and he's available for free
