Title: Who do you want first next season? CONFIRMED AS BOURNEMOUTH (A)
Post by: Holte132 on June 10, 2015, 08:33:57 PM
Fixtures are announced next Wednesday. Who do you want first game? I fancy Bournemouth at home.

Couldn't give a monkeys.

We're looking at the PL fixture list, and not the Championship fixture list.

Having said that, ideally a low key opener at home to someone like Sunderland or Leicester.  Definitely not a newly promoted team away.

Agree with Denmark as just can't be enthusiastic at present !

The break is too short what with the late final, Euro qualifiers still to take place and I believe an August 8th start which is quite frankly ridiculous

I definitely wouldn't want a newly promoted team. They often do well initially, running on adrenalin before running on empty later in the season.

Well, we did beat them at home in the cup last season, which is why I wouldn't mind them first next season.

Tend to agree with everyone who is saying that they can't get enthusiastic about next season - hoped starting this thread would make me feel more like it!

At this moment in time I couldn't care less. That's how I feel about football at the moment sat down here in the sarf surrounded by cocky Chelsea and Man United fans who have probably never been to a game in their lives and are still happy to dish out shit. I have more respect for Blues fans.

I remember the year we won the First Division. First game of the next season was newly promoted Notts County at home. We came out on the pitch parading the First Division trophy with Queen's "We Are The Champions" blasting over the tannoy system all round the ground. Notts County were there for the slaughter. They beat us 1-0.

Wouldn't mind Man. United early on either, get it out of the way at home and as we saw last season they were abysmal for the first few weeks and will probably have 4-5 new signings to fit in who may not actually be very good.

I always say every season we'll start by playing Spurs at home so one year I'll be right especially with the Sherwood connection now.

Assuming they maintain the usual pattern which is that whoever plays their first game at home play the next two away (and vice versa) and then proceed in a straightforward home/away order for the first couple of months, and assuming we're away the weekend Villa Park hosts the egg-chasing World Cup... we will be at home first game. I reckon.

Hate playing newly-promoted teams, especially away. Was hoping Bournemouth would be a Saturday 3pm game but wouldn't be surprised if it's fucked about with.

Happy with Man U first home game. Hopefully they'll get a tough CL playoff draw and be distracted by that.

I agree with everything you said. Newly promoted side away first game is not ideal. You want them to have had a few defeats to burst their bubble first. Happy to get United out of the way first home game. Always my least favourite home match when those lot visit.

Not the ideal start, but at least matches against the top 4 are spread out this season, unlike last. Second match against United is 20 years almost to the day, since we beat them in the league at VP, could it happen, I can but dream.  What I'm not happy about is once again, we are away first game. That is now 5 seasons in a row. Whoever compiles the fixtures needs sacking!

There seems a better spread of tough games this year. There's no months where we play three of four murderous matches but we tend to have at least one horrible looking fixture per month.

I was about to post a joke about Roger De Courcey being the one not needing a ticket but double checked first and found out he is still around.

Didn't we used to have a 'People you thought were dead but aren't thread'? I am terrible at (or very good at, depending on how you view it) thinkng people are dead when they aren't. I even have distant relatives and acquaintances I have to think hard about and sometimes I'm still not sure.

Probably about right with our current squad.

Dear me, New Edition? I presume you mean Jeff Richers First Edition, a team of dancers. As opposed to New Edition, a team of chancers feat. Bobbby Brown.

A little bit of research suggests we are both right. Apparently there was a First Edition and a New Edition on the show. I wonder which one was the original incarnation? If only there was a clue.  Jeff appeared to bugger off at some point between the two.

What do people think is our hardest group of fixtures of the season?

Have to say looking at the run of games there dosen't appear to be a "death" month this year although I suppose late September to Middle of November when we play Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Man. City and Everton would appear to be the closest. Even last season though we won three of those games.

Xmas/new year fixtures look winnable for once, let's not fcuk them up like last year as that should set us up for a comfortable second half of the season.

I can see the Bournemouth game being the early Saturday game or even the Friday night game , unless chelsea v Swansea is made the season opener ?

Yeah Bournemouth will be on TV for sure. How many are on TV this season.

If it's 5 games a weekend, then I'd say our game, Man. United-Spurs, Stoke-Liverpool, Arsenal-West Ham and Chelsea-Swansea will be the TV games in whatever order.

Edit:

There also appears to be less midweek games this season, Tuesday 12th January before we have one this season and only two thereafter.

I guess that's a result of starting the season a week earlier than usual so all for it.

A year or two back I got addicted to watching 3-2-1 on Challenge every night in the early hours of the morning. I believe Paulie also had this addiction at some point in his life. Two things I could never get my head around (apart from the clues) were the 'Pong' video game round they had one series and how everyone around that time who was about thirty managed to look about fifty.

Arsenal away .......last match of the season......nah lightening doesn't strike twice does it?

Well we're always safe by the last game even in the last few dismal seasons so wouldn't it be lovely going there with them say needing a win to get top 4 and stopping them.

Wouldn't make up for the cup final of course but would be amusing nevertheless.

I fear after the first three games we'll only have one point and be contesting bottom of the table with Sunderland.

I'm really happy with the fixtures this time, we don't have the same horrible run of games against the top 6 that certainly helped fuck us over last year, this time everything seems pretty well spread.

At home to Arsenal on my birthday, not sure I'f I'm happy with that one or not, will think about it when it's a bit closer.

We were first visitors to newly-promoted Newcastle too. Going back further we were the friendly visitors who allowed Wimbledon to get their inaugural top flight win at the first attempt.

Can't remember us ever winning at a newly-promoted club. We drew 1-1 with West Brom once, Halsey cheated us as usual. That's the best we've done in the last three decades I think.

I was hoping for an away match because we are committed to being elsewhere that weekend, but I now would rather have missed the first home game than have no chance of going to Bournemeouth which we definitely were well up for.

The only consolation, is that it being drawn as the first match of the season gave us absolutely no chance of building a sufficient booking history to qualify for one of 800 tickets anyway! In most cases, even if I haven't got a good enough booking history, I can usually 'borrow' one, but I can't see that being the case here either!

I reckon that the Premier League chiefs would love to have 20 brand new Lego-bowl grounds, holding 30,000 plus to reinforce the PL brand so I think it's fantastic when a club like Bournemouth break the glass ceiling and get to dine at the top table.

And I agree that they shouldn't charge more than £30 for a ticket - no club should - but why should Bournemouth have to be the club to set the precedent?

They're there on merit, they've done it within the financial constraints their owners have set them.

Bournemouth are probably a club who could quite easily struggle financially at some juncture. I would imagine some of that money may be kept aside for a rainy day, and if the chairman has any sense he'll let a decent young manager invest at least 20 million in keeping them up.

I'm not up on Bournemouths ground, it's obviously small, which in some ways could give them a good atmosphere in home games, but is it in good nick? They might do some superficial things, and perhaps invest in the training and youth academy.
If I were them I'd give it a year. If they're still in the top flight, then they should look at expansion. Back in the championship and they could be in a ground they can no longer fill.

Why should they? Six years ago they were ten minutes from the conference. Just before that they were in administration. The Football League is stocked with clubs who had grandiose, unworkable plans and ended up with grounds they couldn't fill and/or players on contracts they couldn't afford.

Little Bournemouth can do what the heck they want with the money they get. The chances are they will only be in the PL for a season or two so as long as their ground meets all the health and safety criteria then they would probably be better off investing in their academy and training facilities first of all.
The only people who will be moaning about the capacity will be the Bournemouth fans who want to jump on the bandwagon but couldn't be arsed to watch them even last season (average attendance of just over 10,000) and away fans who can't get a ticket.

This will be only the 6th season in their history that AFCB have been outside the bottom 2 divisions, they have a new modern albeit smaller then most stadium. Imo they are being sensible by not increasing this season, and see how they get on. They already have a good academy, and now have their own academy ground, which will benefit them in future.

They should be forced to build a 70,000 capacity stadium with free entry for away fans and champagne for everyone. They're in the Premier League now so should me grateful to be playing the likes of Villa and ensure that they have a ground that suits us, because SilhillVilla thinks so.

I'd be happy with that table going into the last game of the season.

Villa beat Arsenal and Watford better Spurs result. If Carlsberg did Premier League seasons...

The bottom of the table look quite good as well😃.

Mind you after the last few years I'd take finishing with a goal difference of 0.

Maybe they could play the really big games in Harry Redknapp's back garden.

That dog of his might ruin the game though.

sadly I think that the talented pooch known as Rosie has passed on... RIP Rosie..

I assume his bank account has been frozen while probate is being sorted.

Well I disagree , they are guaranteed £100m alone in the first year minimum. They need to sort that little ground out if they aspire to be a PL club.

They aren't aspiring to be a Premier League club. They are one. They achieved that by winning the second tier.

Should we just ignore on-field performance and promote Leeds or Sheffield Wednesday instead because they have bigger grounds?

So when a non league side is promoted to league 2 and they are told to invest in their ground , where's the difference.

There's a difference between a small ground and a ground that doesn't meet the safety requirements etc. Bournemouth's ground meets all required PL criteria.

If I recall Bournemouth have the opportunity to develop the one stand further and increase the capacity from 10-12,000.
They should be forced into doing this as a bare minimum to begin with. I'm not saying they need a 40,000 bowl but a 10,000 ground is not on really.

Actually it is as you believe that just because they are now a PL club they should be forced to increase capacity whether they want to or not. Who cares if they last one season and end up stuck back down in division 3 or 4 like they have for most of their history with a ground that costs a fortune in maintenance for seats they never fill.

The entering the football league requirements are totally different and are common sense based on safety requirements. Football league entry is the last time capacity is a consideration. Go somewhere like Coleshill and you'll see why.

It's no different . Clubs are forced to build bigger grounds and may only last one season in league 2 . There's no difference.
What I'm suggesting is 10,000 is a joke for a PL club.

Of course it is, there's no safety issue with the Bournemouth ground hosting PL games, there is with Coleshill hosting league football. And a good job it's actually 11,700 capacity then ;)

Anyway, maybe this will help you.

Quote
Bournemouth will not be increasing the capacity of their Goldsands Stadium in time for their first season in the Premier League. The ground can only hold 11,700 people and it was widely expected work would begin to meet the need for rising ticket demand soon after their first promotion to the top flight.

But other obligatory improvements to the stadium’s infrastructure must be completed to meet with Premier League criteria and the club claim it will not be possible to increase the number of seats in time for the 2015-16 season.

“When all of the factors were weighed up it just wasn’t feasible to push ahead with expansion of the stadium,” the chief executive, Neill Blake, told the club’s website. “There are a vast number of demands for change behind the scenes placed on any club following promotion to the Premier League, and we have to ensure we meet those demands in time for next season.

“It will take a great deal of planning, time and hard work to meet the guidelines within the space of the next few months, and factoring in the expansion of the South stand as well was virtually impossible.

“There are also well-known complications with the land behind the South stand, due to it being a former waste tip.

“With intensive testing necessary before any building work can be done, something which can take months to complete, this was one of the major stumbling blocks in our proposed plans. In addition, our first priority is to invest in the squad and football staff infrastructure to support the manager Eddie Howe and his coaching staff, which we believe is the best strategy to maintain our Premier League status.

“If we are able to retain our place in the Premier League, stadium capacity will be a priority for the following season.”

Boxing Day home to West Ham sounds a good day out.

40th anniversary of Dennis Mortimer's debut against same opposition.  Ron Saunders Christmas Present for the fans.  Same score would be good, 4 - 1.  However, won't be able to match the attendance, 51,300.

There's this about Brentford in November last year, no mention of ground capacity.

Quote
The west London club's stadium does not currently satisfy top flight standards.

"Griffin Park falls short of meeting Premier League requirements in some areas," chief executive Mark Devlin told the club website.

"We are looking at creative and innovative solutions to meet those requirements."

Every Championship club has to submit plans to the Premier League board before 31 January, detailing how they will meet a series of requirements set by the Premier League.

They include the size of media working areas, levels of floodlighting, the provision of undersoil heating and dressing rooms meeting specific dimensions.

The Bees, who are currently fifth in the Championship table having been promoted last season, have played at the 12,763-capacity Griffin Park since 1904.

The more smaller clubs in the top flight the better. The thought of Sky/Scudamore etc trying to sell something like Bury v Yeovil on a Monday night as part of the bestest league the world has ever seen amuses me. You just know, that deep down, they hate having small clubs like Bournemouth, Watford and Albion soiling the fixture list.

Looks like they're doing as I suggested anyway -

Bournemouth are considering a major renovation of their Goldsands Stadium this summer that would raise their capacity from 11,700 to 15,000 in preparation for Premier League football.
Monday’s 3-0 win against Bolton Wanderers all but clinched their place in English football’s top flight for the first time in their 125-year history but their stadium would be the smallest in the Premier League for more than two decades.
The lease on the temporary 2,400-capacity South Stand is up for renewal this year and one option under review is to add around 3,000 seats behind that goal and create a new, much larger stand.

I think if they had been in the Prem for 2 or 3 years and were still saying 'we do not intend to increase our capacity', the FA, PL chiefs and even fans may have cause to start to moan. They only had their promotion confirmed last month so that gave them less than 3 months to get the work done if they intended to, so understandably it isn't number one priority.

Correct great logic though...rather than spend on ground etc they are spending on squad to do everything to stay up then with additional larger payments next year they'll invest in ground

Apart from giving us 6 points I hope they spend the season being a royal pain in the arse for the established teams.

Let's hope they are forced to plough some of their PL windfall money into the stadium. Coming up with a 12,000 capacity ground is a bit of a joke.

Don't be so miserable.  Just be happy that you have a chance to be among the first away fans to be able to go there next season and give a full throated Brummagem rendition of "Bournemouth's a shit hole, I wanna go home." Possibly live on TV, so millions can hear you.

SilHill is going to do a one man Leeds on them by the sounds of it.

Their entire ground may be smaller than the Holte End, but then so what? They've been a lower league club for most of their existence and if they can establish themselves in the top flight and be satisfied that the demand exists, then they can consider increasing capacity.

There is only Scudamore that will be upset at Deans Court and how that looks for the "brand" in China etc where they're flogging the bestest league ever.

If you're part of the away scheme, then you'll get a ticket anyway and if you're not, you big part timer, then its £25 and a DD from your account for all your other aways.

Some so called 'big city' clubs have grounds that hold less than 30,000 and can't fill them regularly in the top flight, let alone when they have regular visits to the championship. If only I could think of one or two examples.

Am aiming for maybe a couple of games from the first few.  Bournmouth would be good just for the atmosphere and it being there first game in the top flight but will be very hard to get into.  Am hoping to take my friends son to his first ever game should they be over from the states around this time so the Man Utd home would be a good fixture to start him off with (well sort of ;)) and should be quite near London if I wanted to take in the Palace game too.  Enjoyed that fixture last season.  Liked the ground and it was cheap too.
