Title: Cheer me up
Post by: cdbearsfan on May 31, 2015, 02:22:08 AM
I'm utterly fucking devastated. Can anyone think of any reasons to be cheerful?

Best I can come up with is that we didn't go down but with Benteke likely to leave I reckon relegation is more likely than winning a proper trophy. Plus the mooted takeover by a consortium that can't actually afford to buy us, and therefore wants, presumably, to saddle us with debts, fills me with dread.

If possible, someone, cheer me up. Please?

I am grasping for some hope as well. A couple of crumbs I cling to.

1.) Our manager is pretty open (arguably too open) about our problems. Thats a relief that the guy who is most important sees our crisis as well.

2.) We have some decent players who are committed to the club. Players like Delph & Grealish don't become bad after 3 games.

As for the rest, well its just awful isn't it? We came bottom of the survivors in the league. We can't dodge that. Last summer we spent a pittance on a rag tag band of hit & miss has beens or never beens. Some have done alright most haven't. Our trajectory has been downward for years and the last three games have been very sobering, causing me to take stock and realise where we are. It aint pretty.

Another positive; met some brilliant Villa fans today. I'm so proud to support a team that attracts so many wonderful people.

The disappointment really hit me after midnight. The complete lack of any performance. But I couldn't put my finger on what we could have done differently - Arsenal just outclassed us. Which is a shame as they haven't performed at Wembley until today.

I was born into one of the Grandest Football Clubs in England with a history I will always be proud of. We also have some of the best fans around. Except for 1 or 2 minor incidents the Villa Fans were brilliant yesterday. Started off at Wealstone FC for a beer and no doubt the 600+ fans that were there would be welcomed back with open arms. Tubed into Wembley & onto Green Man and you wouldn't know Arsenal were playing. Great atmosphere in the ground and not normally my thing but thought all the flags looked brilliant. Again after the game a little subdued but the Villa fans were still singing on Wembley Way & on the tube.
Couldn't believe how passionless the Arsenal fans were. We left on final whistle and hoards of them were on Wembley Way not even seeing there team lift the cup. Maybe they are bored of the big occasion.
Gutted by the performance on the pitch but still proud to belong to Aston Villa & it's wonderful band of supporters.

I am renewing my season ticket, Aston Villa is my team and I love it, I have plenty to be thankful for, I am not a Bluenose, Stripeyfilth or Doghead, I am still only 57 and feasibly, just feasibly if I have to wait another 57 years I could be just be alive, I am not in a wheelchair, have all my faculties, today I woke up,my mate from Thailand went to Wembley in a Villa dressing gown, Lambert is not our Manager, we are in the Premier League, the Villa support made me proud, I can choose my attitude and today is a good day and I look forward to the start of the new season.

This is Aston Villa and for me, it is perfect.

United beat Chelsea 4-0 in 1994, so it wouldn't be the heaviest in 26 years. Although I admit heaviest in 21 years doesn't sound that much better.

Chelsea at least had the excuse that Elleray kept giving Man U random penalties. The only other four goal defeat since 1903 was Brighton, who had already managed to take them to a replay.

Just watched the game again and n'zogbia was so pityful he actually made me chuckle. I am sure he just decided his game plan was to run around like headless chicken for 90 mins while thinking " what the fuck am I doing here". Today I feel he will be sat somewhere wondering if yesterday was just a dream and tomorrow he will be back to mowing grass for the council. I bet he never dreamed he would be a professional footballer and if that's the case then he was right.

If I remember right Newcastle got beat 2-0 by Arsenal (with Given in goal) in 1998 and also got beat 2-0 by United in 1999. I think Harper was in goal for them for United game.

How different football would be if players had real world contracts of employment instead of the ridiculous cash cows they have today?

Being a lazy demotivated useless barrel of lard (N'Zogbia) would mean you got fired, no money, no wages rather than being allowed to fester on week after week stinking the place out.

I felt exactly like that in my job, and spent loads of time at home trying to get up to speed. But I haven't been through an Ofsted yet, which is my Cup Final, I suppose. I'd like to think I won't be so much of a headless chicken.

My post cup final breakfast menu:

Hard cheese.

Sour Grapes.

Egg on face.

Humble Pie.

Pint of Bitter.

Lets face it, over the past few weeks we've basically been sold a pup. We're now confronted with a manager with the haunted look of someone who's wondering what the fuck he's got himself into and how he's going to get out of it. Results against Southampton and Burnley were forgiven on the basis that the cup final was on the minds of the players. Faithful supporters have shelled out inflated prices to witness that this was not the case, we really are well, crap, and once again a laughing stock in our workplaces and in the media. To cap it all, our one game a season owner sits in the Royal Box with a big stupid grin on his face. Have a great summer and, oh, whats for lunch?....

Upon sober consideration. I think we have been too hard on ourselves and the team. Teams get thrashed in cups all the time, world class teams get thrashed (Barcelona, Brazil) and can come back stronger. Arsenal themselves have been on the wrong end of a league thrashing in recent years (8-2) as well.

I think it was so galling for me because we have had zero chance of winning anything for years, so to get so close felt doubly rough. But it wasn't so long ago Arsenal were being roundly mocked for not winning anything either, so things can change.

So anyway, onwards. We got a thrashing and looked terrible, it happens to richer clubs than us, we should learn what we can (not much) and look forward to next season. The money odds are stacked against us, but thats true for at least half of the league. We stayed up and played some truly great stuff in patches. Maybe we can play that great stuff a bit more often next season :)

There, that cheer you up?

Inevitably I encountered a bluenose as I went into work and was greeted with a mocking laugh and a rhetorical "That was worth it wasn't it"?  I'd no preparerd response but heard myself telling him of the new friends I'd made, the laughs we'd had, the chats we'd had with Arsenal fans , the fact I'd sung Abide with me and been respectable, and the feeling of pride most of the day that my team were part of it all. And that yes it was worth it every minute.

I don'the think he really understood but it at least led to a reasonable conversation.

Interestingly a Stoke supporterwho I don't know too well mailed me to say that years on from their loss it's being  part of it all that's memorable not the  game or result.
