-
Are there answers? Or are we supposed to guess in the thread or PM you?
-
Yes, there are answers. Guess in the thread, theres no prize.
-
Now you tell us, I've just sent my answers off on a postcard.
-
These are tough questions even for real Villa fans, so I asked my mate Dave.
If I say 1975 or Alan Taylor for every answer how many have I got ?
-
Okay, if you insist...
No prizes, just the pleasure of knowing that your need to get a life is less than my own.
1. How many times have Villa beaten Arsenal in the FA Cup?
I know we beat them in the seventies at Highbury when they were a division above us. Guess at two.
2. The biggest crowd for a Villa game outside Wembley in the 1957 cup run was over 63,000, who were the opposition?
We played WBA in the Semi/replay at St Andrews/The Hawthorns but not sure either ground would've been big enough for that sort of crowd. I'll guess Burnley at VP in the QF replay.
3. After Peter McParland's two goals in the 1957 final, who was the next Villa player to score a goal at Wembley?
If you mean playing for Villa, it must've been Ray Graydon? Unless it's an international goal... maybe McParland again, against England?
4. After winning the cup, Villa were knocked out in the third round in 1958 - by whom and where?
By the way you say "where" leads me to think it must've been at a neutral ground. I'll say Wolves knocked us out at The Hawthorns.
5. Only 12 players in total were used thoughout the 1957 cup run. Which were the two players not to appear in all games?
Dugdale and Tulip. Complete guess. These are really difficult!
6. Villa were beaten semi finalists in 1959 and 1960 losing to eventual winners Notts Forest and then Wolves, and the legend 'beat Villa and win the cup' was often quoted. Which was the first club after 1960 to knock Villa out of the cup but not go on to win it?
Complete guess at Man City.
7. in the 6th Round replay in 1957 against Burnley at Villa Park what colour shirts did Villa play in?
I think I know this one... Blue as we had to borrow shirts off Small Heath. The fact that Burnley get a mention here makes me think my answer to Q2 must be incorrect but I can't be arsed to change it.
8. Of the 12 players who played in the 1957 competition, who was the first to leave the club, and what happened when he returned to Villa Park with his new club?
Guess at Dugdale and that he scored an own goal on his return, Ridgewell-style.
9. How Many times did Peter McParland score two or more goals for Villa in an FA Cup tie?
Five times (no idea).
10. At which ground have Villa played the most of its 23 cup semi final games?
Another guess... Hillsborough.
11. Who was the only Birmingham-born player in the 1957 cup final?
If I keep saying Dugdale it must be right eventually!
12. What was the final score from this early 60's cup tie?
I think we played Preston and won as it got a mention recently when we were drawn at home in a QF for the first time in fifty-five years. We won, I know that. I'll say three-nil Villa.
13. Both semi finals are now held at Wembley, there has only been one year that a single venue has hosted three semi final games, what was the year?
1993 I think Sheff U v Sheff W may have gone to a replay?
14. what was the first year Villa Park hosted an FA Cup Semi Final?
I'll say 1900.
15. When was the last time Villa, Albion and Birmingham were drawn at home in the FA Cup with all three games kicking off at the same time?
Another complete guess... 1977.
-
Number 3 is Ray Graydon (I think)
-
Ah, hang on... just noticed the players in white appear to be celebrating! Can I change my guess to three-one to Villa?
-

I've used the back of an envelope. I never did see any postcards for these things unless if we were on holiday in Aberdovey.
-
Number 3 is Ray Graydon (I think)
It's Gerry Hitchens on the 10th May, 1961 for England in an 8-0 win against Mexico.
-
Number 4 is Stoke City in a 2nd replay at neutral Molineux. We lost 2-0.
-
10. At which ground have Villa played the most of its 23 cup semi final games?
Another guess... Hillsborough.
Right city, wrong ground.
-
Brammall Lane then by default.
-

To make it interesting, seeing as how I am unable to get to Wembley, in lieu of a prize I'll donate £3 to Acorns for every question that is answered correctly. So I stand to get stiffed for £45 if all are answered.
So far :-
ALITA - None correct I am afraid, although you do get credit in that 1975 is an anagram of 1957.
CDBullyWeeFan
Sorry for the difficulty, that's what you get when we only win the thing every 58 years or so.
7. Close enough to be correct. We borrowed shirts from Small Heath but red not blue. I thought that was the hardest question.

-
2 was the home tie with Bristol City
3 - if it's not Gerry Hitchens who someone said earlier then are we looking at Schoolboy internationals - so maybe Norman Ashe or Alan Baker?
8 - Stan Crowther played for Man Utd in the FAC semi-final v Fulham at Villa Park the following season, having already played for us in the 3rd round that season.
Good quiz.

-
13. 1980 Villa Park hosted three semi final games. West Ham v Everton, then two replays between Liverpool and Arsenal.
-
Number two is either Luton or Bristol City. I will go for City I think.
-
No 3 I reckon its Norman Ashe who I am sure scored for England Schoolboys when he was on Villa's books in some way.
and no 8 is Billy Myerscough but I cant remember the second bit.
-
The answer to No.6 is Tottenham in 1961.
-
I think me and Lou should get half of question seven right each seeing as I got the team correct but she actually said red!
Only because I was convinced every answer would be Arsenal!
Thanks, CD

-
8. Doc Pace scored a hat-trick for Sheffield Utd when they beat us 3-1 at Villa Park in the Second Division.
-
14. 1901
Unless Aston Lower Grounds pre-Villa Park counts - then it would be 1883 or 84. (I realise you know that Dave, just wondering if the question master is trying to catch us all out!).
-
16. 2015.
-
9. Four.
-

14. 1901, correct. Spurs 4 Albion 0.
PWS
12 Not 3-1. Rule so far is to say who score what anyways.
DeKuip
8. Doc Pace who later scored hat trick, correct. Signed by then SheffU manager Joe Mercer boxing day 1957 he returned when we dropped into Div 2 and killed our unbeaten home record early 1960.
16. Not 2015, we didn't all kick off at same time.
14 is not a trick question, but there was probably a better question somewhere that included the Lower Grounds game.
EIAdio
9. Peter McP scored 2 in an FA Cup tie four times, correct. I am afraid I didn't look up who against.

Villa 0 Spurs 2
1961

Name all the years Small Heath have failed to win it.
Preferably in front of a nose.
-
Answer to question 12
Villa 0 Spurs 2
1961
But we didn't wear striped socks in the 60s so I think deKuip's right about Burnley. Hard to tell whether their opposition's shorts are black or navy though, so I think one of he or I have it, just no idea which
-
M&B is written on one of the stands. Brummie brewery so can't be Turf Moor?
-
Question 15
5th January 1974
-
M&B is written on one of the stands. Brummie brewery so can't be Turf Moor?
No, it's Villa Park. Burnley played two semi-finals at VP in the early sixties, one against Spurs, one against Fulham.
-
12. That's Burnley not us! So 3-0 to Spurs.
Yes I agree in 1961
-
M&B is written on one of the stands. Brummie brewery so can't be Turf Moor?
No, it's Villa Park. Burnley played two semi-finals at VP in the early sixties, one against Spurs, one against Fulham.
Agreed. Certainly Villa Park. It had me flummoxed as I didn't recognise the 'Villa' goalie or the centre half. Also, now it's been pointed out, I don't remember us ever wearing hooped socks in the '60's.
My guess would be Spurs.
-
De Kuip
12. Spurs 3 Burnley 0 - Correct. 1961 Cup Semi Fimal, 30 odd short of 70,000 in the crowd. Villa did not play in those socks at that time and used white numbers until much later in the decade. The centre forward is Bobby Smith and the centre half isn't Jimmy Dugdale.
Pete
12. Graham Leggatt scored Fulham's goal in 1962, that's not him.
Vila Lew
15. 1974 correct. Third round, 5th Jan 1974, all three teams won.
