Title: The Dubrovnik conspiracy.
Post by: Andy_Lochhead_in_the_air on March 09, 2015, 08:11:23 AM
Yes, it's about the glory of my eyes seeing the Villa win The Cup.
However, just to clear up in advance for those of you dreaming of Europe even if we fall at the final hurdle.

UEFA TEP strategy meeting, Dubrovnik Croatia. September 2013.

`Gentleman, we must do everything in our power to stop Aston Villa`.

Quote
In response to another request by the member associations, the UEFA Executive Committee agreed that the UEFA Club Competitions Committee should make the necessary regulatory changes to allow the best-placed non-qualified domestic championship club to enter the UEFA Europa League from the 2015/16 season, rather than the domestic cup runners-up, should the domestic cup winners also qualify for the UEFA Champions League via the final championship standings.

Bloody eurocrats ! It's enough to make ya vote for Farage I tell ya !

Seriously though. WE HAVE TO WIN IT !

I assume he's talking about when we have to defend our trophy next year.

I don't want us in the Europa Cup.  It's a nonsense of a competition in it's current format.

2015/16 Europa competition. In other words, the qualifiers for next seasons Europa from this seasons domestic competitions.

Indeed. Let's just win the FA Cup and refuse to enter the Europa League. That'll learn them.

No arguments from me on this. UEFA have got it right, even if it is us that suffers through it this year.

It is a competition absolutely ruined by the desire to squeeze television money out of it.

Having said that, I used to like watching us in that competition. I like night games, which helps, but there was some entertaining stuff to be seen (if you forget about the existence of Rapid Vienna, obviously).

That Ajax match was great, and I even enjoyed the matches against teams we'd never heard of from grim Eastern European mining towns.

Then we had that Odense game which was the first time I've ever been sunburned at a football match in this country, it was played so early.

That was the one when Bouma's foot came off wasn't it?

I think the trains were off too and ended up walking Lichfield Road back to town.

I don't think we are strong enough to have a serious tilt at the Europa League, and (assuming we don't spend big in the summer).  It doesn't seem to have done Everton much good domestically.

It's badly affected teams for years - Everton, Swansea, Newcastle etc. You spend a season trying to get there and then when you do, it proves to be an albatross around your neck. It would be getting way too ahead of ourselves to take seriously at this point but you either need a strong squad or to play weakened teams in it to ensure league form isn't impacted.

Avoid the Europa League at all costs.  We'd only get done by Rapid Vienna again.

I'm sure that when Rangers and Fulham got to the Europa final, they had played over twenty games in the competition.  In league terms, that's over half a season, which is ridiculous.

They should make it different to the Champions League and have two legged ties throughout.

Ah, but then you get clubs drawn in places like Bruges and they take twenty thousand.

Bordeaux played twenty to get to the 1996 final, via the Intertoto.

If we end up in the Europa I'd be using it for the kids and the also-rans. We should make entirely sure it wouldn't effect our league form too much.

Do you reckon Steve Gough would run a coach to Tel Aviv?

Oh yes.... He'd fly and either myself or your former seller would courier the coach!

Nice to see you in the ground Saturday😄

I was going to ask will you be taking disinfectant in with you for the next home game, but your (old?) seat in North Stand will probably be replaced for new now.

Sorry but I think I'm in the minority of people who love the UEFA Cup/Europa League, for me it's the pinnacle of what a club of our size should be aiming for every season. The fact we've only got to the quarter final twice is a crying shame. I do agree we'd need a stronger squad though to compete in it.

If it was the old EUFA cup format I'd be all over it.
I don't like the silly elongated format now in use

UEFA are quite correct on this occasion.

They should've let us into the European Cup in 1990-91 though, the tossbags.

It's a weird situation when finishing sixth is preferable to fifth. Playing in European competition should be something to aspire to, rather  than being a pain in the arse.

Especially as they let an Italian(?) team in who finished second around the same time because whoever won their league was banned.

The European Cup started in 1955 but not the European Cup Winners Cup. Why ? They bloody knew what was going to happen in 1957 !

Didn't the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) replace the Cup Winners Cup? A far better competition. One argument for losing it was that the domestic knockout cup means less in other countries; abandoning the cup winners cup format probably escalated that.

No, the UEFA and ECWC ran alongside each other for years.  I think the last ECWC was about 1999, possibly the same year the final was at Villa Park.  I always remember (late '80s, early '90s) how everyone used to say that the UEFA was the harder to win, as all the teams who finished 2nd/3rd strengthened their squads where the champions were less likely to do so.

Having the three European cups was bloody great.  The whole format now is a bloated mess.  Wouldn't mind the Europa League if there were fewer games, but no chance of that happening.

CWC was always the easier to win, shame we never qualified for the bugger. I remember us playing Inter in round 2 of the UEFA while Manure were playing Wrexham in round 2 of the CWC, and Wrexham were hampered with the old 3 foreigners rule as they had a load of English players.

The last ever ECWCF was at ours.

French. Marseille were banned (but bizarrely not stripped of their title) after bunging the opposition on the way to winning the European Cup.

UEFA offered their place to the runners-up Paris St Germain (having refused to do likewise to use when we finished second behind the equally-banned Liverpool). In turn, PSG turned it down as they were owned by the owner of Canal Plus TV who didn't want to alienate Marseille-supporting subscribers, so Monaco (who finished third) ended up taking the spot.

It's now common practice for the next-highest placed team to take a banned/ineligible team's place. I think Villa were the only ever exception to this rule.

I really want us to get into Europe, as last time we had a decent run I a) had no money, and b) was still in school
