He played well against Bournemouth so lets hope Cleverley can continue that an improve. For a while Gabby was the undroppable one, now it's our Tom. Still, there's attacking intent in that line up and nice to see Fabian given the captaincy which he'll essentially keep as long as Vlaar isn't in the team. Let's have a go boys. That Arsenal team is decent but nothing special.

which is from where he can be effective if he comes on late in a game. He's not a starter but he deserves to be in the match day squad.

that seems a reasonable starting line-up.

Nah Cleverley has been toilet since he's arrived. Does absolutely nothing to improve an already mediocre midfield, doesn't create, doesn't score, doesn't boss the centre of the park....don't want him.

We're going to sign Cleverley aren't we :(

Not for any cash transfer fee, we're not.

The lack of any other activity suggests that no-one else is that keen either, at least not at the fee involved.

It was a season long loan unless someone else matched the alleged £8M to make it permanent, and even then we got first refusal at that price.

If he's still here on the 3rd February, it just means no-one else wants to cough up Man Utd's asking price, nothing more, nothing less.

Cleverly is a complete bellend of a footballer, and I can completely understand the Man Utd fans who hated him being anywhere near their team.
Richardson is also complete garbage. Cissohko is much better.
Anyway, come on Villa!

Cleverly must have a play if fit clause in his contract, I'd definitely have played Sinclair instead.

If we can get Get Gil, Wiemann and Benteke on form today they could upset that Arsenal defence.
Our defence and midfield looks strong too.

My only concern is it looks good on paper but will they go out and believe in themselves?

Good to see Gabby dropped to bench, and to see Delph as captain. Would rather have Westwood or Bacuna than Cleverley - I really just don't see anything in him which justifies him starting every week.

That's probably what I would have done. I certainly wouldn't have started with a player who only signed two days ago.

I don't think it is. He played well against the team that opposition in front of him. He's never going to do anything overly spectacular. Bournemouth sent out a team they had used to get through the previous round. I'm not going to cut him down for that. I would hope that he ups his game significantly to warrant us signing him permanently off course. He isn't remotely worth the price being quoted.

As I'm not expecting anything from us today, up against a very in form Arsenal side, maybe, just maybe, we can pull off a real shock result. Two wins in 17 is beyond pathetic but now there are no excuses, we have supposedly our best team available, so let's see what we're all about.

my point being he's not a second tier player so when you assess how many players play at the top level of the game in one of the established leagues around the world there isn't thousands of players in his position that are better than him. The number is significantly smaller which in your post above might be more accurate.

Stunned to see Richardson keep his place. Looks like we will be more expansive on the ball but thought a lot of the defensive jitters last time out were down to his positioning.

Another chance for Cleverley, understandable I guess but I'd have Bacuna in there for a game like this.

Arsenal look very weak at full back but we don't really have the players to exploit there.

Lambert does something do midfielders.

Westwood that was once a creative promising player, is now a dull-witted, predictive, sideways/backwards speedbump.

Sanchez seems puzzled, after he had a good game its like he been chewed out for his performance and looks like he is trying to learn how to play in the next one....and hating every minute.

Wonder how long it takes him to ruin Gil....

Got to get him in a more central role as he looks the only one remotely capable of causing them problems.

Exactly. Give him a freer role not ask him to play as a winger

Those times when we hit it long we miss Gabby I think. Arsenal just look so much more confident when going forwards. We seem to want to slow things down and bring others into it much more.

We miss Gabby of years ago.

Not the current model.

If we actually had a proper coaching team it might not look so fucking shambolic.

Awful, largely. Lambert. Needs to, but will never, GO.
We need a rocket up our backsides, Sanchez needs to learn how to pass. Fair play to Gil for trying different things. Needs to play more central though. Credit to Weimann too, he's worked hard and was unlucky with his header. We've kept it at 1-0, that's the achievement

Learners new business model:

1) Find cheap young unknown defenders and sign them.
2) Tell manager to banish offensive play to train the defenders for 90 mins / game.
3) Sell defenders for a huge profit when relegated.
4) Write of tax profit from sales against club devaluation .
5 ) Donate ruined club to charity for another tax cut.

Arsenal have spent a fortune on bringing in and developing incisive players to play in a very defined system. We look lost trying to play that way. For them it comes very naturally. Unless you go out to complete disrupt them (AKA The Pulis Theory) then you run the risk of not being able to compete. We at trying to pass it about and have been below average at that and in many cases our control has been very poor. It's giving them so much space to counter. We simply must not give them the ball in dangerous places because this could end up 2 or 3-0.

There's no disgrace in not scoring against arsenal, that's not the issue. The problem is that this game was preceded by five other league games in all of which we failed to score.

I prefer us trying to pass the ball rather than aimless hoofing but two things bother me. One is that this switch had started to be used, by Lambert and others, as an excuse - "it's a new system" etc etc

The other concern is, passing the ball and trying to keep it is great but what the fuck has Lambert spent the last 2.5 years trying to do?

Exactly. They play in completely different positions. In Sanchez's role in front of the back 4 it's absolutely vital that he helps the team keep possession when we have it. Some of the balls he's given away have been without being under any pressure at all and it's killing us. Cleverley has been pretty anonymous as usual, but let's not let that distract from Sanchez's performance just because of who he is.

For all of the stick Cleverley gets, Sanchez has just turned in one of the worst 45 minutes that I've ever seen from a Villa midfielder. Slow, static and seemingly seeing an invisible player on the right-wing every 5 minutes or so. Needs to come-off for Westwood in the 2nd half.

At least Sanchez looks for the ball. Cleverley is invisible, he needs to come off and Westwood on

Give it a rest. Sanchez has been the worst by a clear mile.

Of course Cleverley doesn't give the ball away, he tries very hard at hiding himself so he can't make mistakes he needs sending back to ManUre. He contributes nothing

I have to say, Gil was great for me, probably the best thing about us. The turn midway through the half was the sort of thing no one would even attempt at Villa! Credit where it's due to Lambert for bringing him in. Come on Villa.

I'm not sure what more Benteke should be doing. Supposing he does run around and chase lost causes and "make an effort" to get onto on of our hopeless crosses/hoofs. And then in the 90th he has a throughball to latch onto and jas got no puff left.

I have no idea what you lot are watching but I thought we were okay that half, bar a couple of defensive mistakes and Sanchez passing. More posession than Arse on their own turf is bloody good progress if you ask me

You are Paul Lambert and I claim my £5.
Yep, I'm really, really pleased with our possession stats. How many points does it win us?

So yet another half  comes and goes without us scoring again ,has any manager/coach in our history ever gone so long without a goal,i certainly can not remember it this bad .
I think I read earlier in the week that we've never gone six full league games without scoring (and today would be the sixth).

What about earlier this season?

Ironically, this is one of those few games in a season when it's ok to sit back and defend in a tight unit and break with direct balls and pace. About one of the four or five games where pacey yet technically limited players can actually look dangerous, running into space against the metaphorical oil tanker that is Per Mertesacker. So what does Lambert do? He drops Gabby and tries to play possession football. *Facepalm*.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day, but Lambert is somehow tactically shit ALL THE TIME.

He is generally so shit that I wonder whether he is still on Albion's payroll (I think the fastest I have seen him move was to get himself sent off against them), but on this occasion he turned to play the ball to the wing, and the ref stood directly in the way of that pass, he was dispossessed in the moments hesitation that followed.

That there is a false narrative. It is not their fault that sitting on their hands and smiling while the team sinks is happening. Or Paul Lamberts for that matter. You watch, it will be our fault before you know it.

Goal Difference of -19 now. I think it should be a bit like when a team scores 6 or 7 and they have to bracket the number in words just to clarify it, you know, like Arsenal 7 (seven)-Aston Villa 0. Every league table should display our goal-difference as -19 (minus nineteen).
