If Vlaar goes, who replaces him as captain?
The three outstanding candidates to me would be Delph, Clark (who was impressive again today) and maybe Guzan.
(hope you don't mind, I've renamed the thread to make it clearer what it's about - Dave)
-
Delph.
How many other players who have just broken in to the international squad, with nothing left on their contracts, playing for an ailing club with rumours of more ambitious sides being interested would have signed another lengthy contract?
He said it himself, theres still loyalty in football and he feels like he belongs here, to do this makes me think he gets us a bit and it's not entirely just a job. Give the boy the armband and try to get more in like him.
Him and the Villa have really brightened up today.
-
Watching Clark with Okore today, he was organising, shouting, pointing etc. All the things you never see Gabby do when he has the armband. For me, it would be a coin toss between Clark and Delph, with Westwood in the mix as I think he is a natural leader on the pitch but it gets overlooked. Clark has proven a lot of people wrong about himself this season. Before it started these 2 were probably choice 4 and 5. Brave man to change them at the moment.
-
6 months ago I would have said 100% Delph, but seeing how Clark has blossomed in recent weeks I may lean slightly towards him.
As you say, Agbonlahor shows no qualities for leadership at all.
-
Forwards don't usually make good captains either.
-
It has to be a player who is going to start every game. For me, Delph is that player.
-
Delph for sure.
Then Guzan as back-up.
-
Delph with Westwood as vice-captain. I don't think there will be many games in which neither of them play, and Delph will be nailed on to start whenever he is available.
Clark has been really solid, but I still don't think any single centre back is guaranteed their place over any other.
-
Delph for sure.
Then Guzan as back-up.
That is what I would do.
-
Delph. Close thread.
-
Delph. Got to reward that loyalty. I'd do it now - you can't have a captain that refuses to negotiate a new contract.
-
It's good to have a debate on the subject for a change.
-
Although nothing beats a H&V debate about crisps or biscuits and what are classed as crisps or biscuits.
-
Or a cake.
-
I've always fancied Westwood as good captain material. He was captain from a very young age when he was at Crewe so he can definitely do it, plus his positioning on the pitch where he often acts as a link between defence and attack means he can have influence across the whole pitch. He's very consistent and has a good mentality as well, two things vital in captains to me.
-
Delph for me.
-

Or sauces and where is appropriate to use said sauces.
-
Delph.
-
Hutton. Has the authority and is well liked by the support. Leads from the front.
-
Even if Vlaar stays, shouldn't we name a new captain anyway, as Ron misses quite a lot of games?
A toss up for me between Clark and Delph. I think Clark has definitely matured this season, just needs to calm it a bit at times, but Delph can also be a bit fiery.
Westwood would be another possibility though.
-
Delph.
-
Cleverley for me.
Just kidding. It has to be someone who's guaranteed to start when fit. As good as Clark has been recently, I guess that's still up in the air.
I think I'd plump for Delph, especially after yesterday. He's shown his commitment to the club and this would be just reward for him.
-
Paul Lambert says Fabian Delph is a future captain of Villa.
Delph signed a new four-and-a-half year deal in claret and blue over the weekend.
And, at 25-years-old, the midfielder is entering the peak years of his life in football.
Boss Lambert sees characteristics in Delph that he believes could well see him don the armband in the coming years.
The manager thinks he could follow in the footsteps of Stan Petrov, Gareth Barry, Martin Laursen, Dennis Mortimer, Chris Nicholl and Johnny Dixon.
He said: "Fabian will be a big driving force for this club for the next few years.
"It is a great coup for us for him to stay. He will go from strength to strength.
"He is a captain in the making and has that personality and a driving force and hunger to succeed.
"I think he would thrive on the responsibility of it. He could do it.
"He's a mature guy and his loyalty speaks volumes for the guy.
"I think he can be a really, really top player if he keeps his feet on the ground. He's still only young.
"It's about keeping his feet on the ground and keeping that enthusiasm for the game of football.
"As long as he has that and that football hunger and heart then his career can go really, really far.
"He's got years and years. He's a top player. If he can keep that hunger and that desire he won't go far wrong.
"Hopefully he will be a big part of Aston Villa's present and future.
"He's a really good player, top player and he can only get better if he keeps working hard."
-
Simple Delph.
-
If Delph is still here, then him.
-
Delph landslide.
-
Delph 100% with Guzan as vice captain. I know it's just an armband and it doesn't mean anything, but I'd hate to see the likes of Agbonlahor or Westwood wearing it. It should go to a player who's good enough to start every game.
-
Delph for me.
Clark comes a close second imho.
-
Delph without question, Clark as vice captain.
-
I'd give it Clacker with Delph as vice
-
Delph.
Please not Gabby.
-
It's nailed on Delph. I dare say part of the persuasion to stay was that he'd be someone they'd want to build the club around, plus some sizeable sign on fee and wage increase
-
Delph landslide.
Like one of his tackles
-
As you say, Agbonlahor shows no qualities for leadership at all.
Or very little else these days I'm afraid.
-
Delph is a good option and maybe Westwood as vice-captain.
-
Delph. Even if Vlaar stays.
If Vlaar stays then Vlaar as Clark is not guaranteed to start.
If Vlaar goes then Guzan is good back up.
-
Hutton. Has the authority and is well liked by the support. Leads from the front.
I like this idea.
-
Gabby should not even be in the team let alone considered as captain material.
Delph for me.
-
Delph all day long.
-
Vlaar needs to take a leaf out of Delph's book....he's been injured so often these last 3 seasons. You just can rely on him. Okore is far better anyway. Delph should be Captain.
-
Lambert mentioned Delph as a future captain in the interview on his new deal so think that's a certainty next season.
-
Easy, Sanchez. Has the required steel. He doesn't speak much English so he can use slaps and points to whip this crew into shape. He just needs to inform Lambert.

It's good that Clark is even in the discussion but now I would say just let him get on with the job he's been doing very well since he came back into the side. He's clearly been demonstrating captain qualities but Delph's been consistent for a few years and after his recent actions and comments I think it would be Delph for me too.
-
Delph is a good option and maybe Westwood as vice-captain.
This for me.
Despite Guzan being a good shout, I've never been keen on goalkeepers being captains, has to be an outfield player. Neither am I keen on forwards being made captain either.
Delph has given us all a massive boost and shown his commitment to the club - his example will hopefully inspire others, a good captain isn't just what they do on the pitch but off as well.
-
Delph. Even if Vlaar stays.
This for me as well. With Vlaar, Clark & Guzan after that.
Gabby is just not captain material (he's barely footballer material at the moment)
-
Delph. Hands down. Clark or Westwood as back up. I'd possibly have thrown Guzan into the mix but I'm not a fan of keepers being skippers.
-
I think Delph is too quiet to be a captain and it may effect his own game, you can see Clark is getting better and better and is always trying to muster the troops. So for me Clark with Westwood as deputy. I too do not like GK'S as skippers. Keep it away from Gabby.
-
Now with added poll.
-
Presuming Vlaar goes it is a two horse race for me. Delph captain and Guzan his deputy.
-
I've always fancied Westwood as good captain material. He was captain from a very young age when he was at Crewe so he can definitely do it, plus his positioning on the pitch where he often acts as a link between defence and attack means he can have influence across the whole pitch. He isn't a nailed on starter though and hopefully in the summer another midfielder would be purchased and we'd see a midfield of Gil, Delph, Sanchez + New signing.
-
Now with added poll.
Where is The Aston Villa player of the season. A player lauded by none other than the famous centre half Jores Okore (and me!)
Where is Alan Hutton if I might be as bold to ask?
-

As if by magic the shopkeeper appeared.

God Bless You Guvnor!

With Vlaar not signed yet and looking like he'll leave, I do wonder if the captaincy became part of Delph's contract negotiations?
-

I don't think it needed to be. He clearly has leadership qualities, has demonstrated loyalty and has become an England player (and looks like he'll be a regular). We don't know what's going to happen with Vlaar but if he did leave, Delph is an obvious candidate.
-
Delphi or Clark
-
As I said in another thread I don't think Guzan would be a bad choice. But I think possibly Delph he'll need to grow into the role of course. Of course all this could change if we have a "NEW MANAGER!!!" next season ::)
-
Ron Vlaar. Injury-prone, inconsistent and wants to play elsewhere for someone else. Goodbye.
Gabby. Currently truly awful. Lost what he used to have. Shame.
Delph. Just re-signed to a tremendous round of applause from us. Give it to him.
-
A captain has to lead by example and Delph hasn't put in a good game since signing his new contrct, i would agree though that we need a decent captain more then ever i just don't see one in the side.
-
Clark
-
Clark.
Consistent performer, should be a nailed on starter, plays like he actually gives a shit and he's had the armband before.
-
Ciaran Clarke could develop into an outstanding centre half and captain and should be the heart of the team now.
-
No coincidence that a number of us on here a few years ago were saying that Clark would make a great captain of the club eventually, and given a little time and patience it seems that's where he's got to right now.
I would have plumped for Delph a month or so ago because he's older, more experienced, an England international and gives his all, has played consistently well for the last 18 months and signed a 4 year contract when he could have jumped ship.
However, since signing the contract he seems to have almost disappeared and be playing well below the level that we, and his team-mates I should think, have come to expect. He needs to lead by example...Gabby has failed miserably at this; Clark has excelled!
I hope Delph can get his arse back in gear pronto...we need him and his leadership skills on the pitch.
I'd let Ron go.
-
I agree it should be Ciaran Clark in Vlaar's absence. The only other other potential option other than those mentioned is Ashley Westwood - I think he captained Crewe for a while but looks like he may not start under Tim Sherwood.
-
Clark. I think he talks the most on the pitch anyway.
-
Guzan or Given, whichever one is playing. Not normally a fan of keepers as captains, but they're our two most experienced and reliable players IMO.
-
Delph for me.
Still too soon for Clark.
-
Delph please
-
Clark's certainly knocking at the door but for someone who people were talking about discarding a few months ago, making him captain at a time when we're fighting for our lives is a bit too much. I would say Delph for now with Westwood and Clark possibilities for next season.
-
Depends on which division we find ourselves in.
Delph if we stay up.
Clark or Westwood if we go down.
-
If he shaves that stupid beard off, Baker. Heart of a lion, brain of an ant, perfect combination for a Villa captain.
-
Delph
-
I don't get all this new praise for Clark, we are 19th in the league having lost our last 6 consecutive games.
Delph has been truly dreadful since signing a new deal.
Neither of them for me.
-

They've all been quite awful. Delph, however, has shown true loyalty. Clark close second.
-
Delph or Clark for me.

Maybe so, but you've got to have somebody as captain I suppose, and he's one of the few players in the team who has actually improved. I'd give it to Hutton personally.
-
Delph for me.
Still too soon for Clark.
How so? They are the same age and Clark has played more games for us.
-
Clark for me, I think he's been our best player this season.
EDIT: Post got moved mid edit, the only competition for player of the season, for me, is Hutton and Okore, and I can't see either of them as captain.
-
Based only on reports of him I've seen on here. His displays and composure seem to fit what was being reported from those that saw him coming through the ranks. If he is also vocal in addition to his proven progression, give him the armband.
-
Got to be Clark based on recent performances Delph seems to have moved in the 'new contract comfort zone'.
-
Depends who's here after the drop ....
-
Delph and Clark as second in command. Hutton 3rd.
Under no circumstances should Gabby be near that bloody armband. Nor Vlaar but he'll be gone anyway.
