What was the name of the Belgian bloke who fucked up the Open a few years ago? Was miles ahead then went mental trying to take shots out of the water? He might've been French... and it might not have been the Open. Hmmm... I'm useless at remembering stuff.

French fella, Jean van de Velde.

And don't forget Rory fecking up on of the US majors a few years back.

Ah yeah. None of then would ever have been able to compete with the greatest of them all.
Kim Jong-Il.

Eldrick is currently crap at golf

I see the Open's going to be on Sky now.
Money talks nowadays sadly but I thought that was one of the protected events to always be on Terrestrial?

Tiger Woods is going away for a little while ... or a long while.
With rumors swirling that the Big Cat was going to make an even bigger announcement on Wednesday, he simply wrote -- quite matter-of-factly, as it turns out -- on his website that he is strongly considering not playing the Honda Classic and will return to action once his game is up to snuff.
"Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me," Woods said. "My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf."
He's right about that part.
"I'd like to play The Honda Classic -- it's a tournament in my hometown and it's important to me -- but I won't be there unless my game is tournament-ready. That's not fair to anyone. I do, however, expect to be playing again very soon."
What "very soon" means, nobody knows, but at this point, I'd expect it to be later rather than sooner.
"Like I've said, I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I'm ready, I'll be back," he said. "I am committed to getting back to the pinnacle of my game."
Whether he can -- or will -- ever do that is the question, especially now that Woods is admitting that a new unspecified injury -- "not related to my previous surgery" -- is forcing him into daily physical therapy. "I am feeling better every day," he noted.
As for when we'll see him again, I would expect it to go like this: He will likely skip the Honda Classic in two weeks even though he has not ruled that out yet, not qualify for the Cadillac Championship after that, not play the Valspar Championship and then be back for the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
It's a tournament he's won eight times at a course he clearly loves. Since he will not go into the Masters cold, the Arnold Palmer Invitational is certainly the best bet for when we'll see Woods again.

How The Masters retains it's Major status is beyond me, The Open, The US Open & The USPGA are the Majors, The Masters is an invitational event.

To be fair I think the Masters is like Wimbledon as being the most significant and memorable of all the majors.
-
Rather than a separate Masters thread...
...who are you backing? Will Tiger make the cut? Bubba again?
I'm on Horschel and Bubba to win. Ryan Moore and Ryan Palmer e/w.
-
Betfair are paying the first 7 e/w.
-
A hole in one for Jack in the Par 3 competition.
Eldrick played in it as well for the first time
-
To be fair I think the Masters is like Wimbledon as being the most significant and memorable of all the majors.
More than The Open?
-
Yes, Thres something about The Masters.
The Azaleas, Amen Corner, the (now deceased) Eisenhower tree, tees that thread through narrow fairways lined with spruce trees, Caddies in white jump suits, the Green Jacket, Greg Norman imploding in the play off, just a brilliant tournament.
-
It's all just so false and manufactured and has a terrible record regarding human rights even in recent times. The course can't even claim to be original, it's most famous holes, Amen Corner are copies of Harry Colt's Stoke Park. The greens and fairways are painted in places for TV for the Masters week.
What pisses me off even more is people calling The Open, The British Open. It's The Open.
-
Augusta is a spectacular golf course. I've been twice, 2011 and 2013 and TV doesn't do it justice at all. If you want to see how an event is perfectly run then try and go just once. It is immaculate in every conceivable way. And even things like food and drink, which at most sporting events is outrageous is ridiculously priced. Basically for $10-20 you can be pretty well fed and lubricated. It's about $1.50 for a sandwich, $2 for a beer. Even the gift shop is run with such precision that while the line up always looks long you're through it really quickly.
The course is about as hilly as it comes, and pretty much none of the lies are truly flat. The fairways aren't cut as short as some championship courses so combined with the length of the course makes it all the more impressive when you see some of the scores that guys have put up. This is a tournament that at the end of everything basically makes $6-8m a year clean. It is only open 3-4 months of the year and obviously is a very private members club. Yes, it has been associated with being male only and segregation but under Billy Payne it has become more open given its public status. It's not like the Royal & Ancient have been the most open society.
While I can appreciate the history of the The Open, I absolutely love The Masters. It signals the start of spring, and promise of good weather and gold a top notch sporting event. If you love golf and you ever get a chance to go, then go and enjoy!

I always think Fowler is an excellent bet for a top 5 finish.

Spieth has clattered one into the trees

So has Rose

Though Spieth has got considerably luckier

Always the chance of a van de Velde.

Back to within 3. And Tiger hits a root. Not as funny as his one tee shot yesterday though.

The chasing pack are running out of holes

And back to 5. It may well need a van de Velde moment for anyone to have a chance.

What an anti climax this is

If ever there was a case for dope testing, this bloke typifies it!
How did he qualify? Anyone know?

Spieth shows very little emotion at all, I wonder if he mumbles

Fair play to Spieth, he's played superbly all week.
Well deserved.

Watched a bit of the LPGA Swinging Skirts 1st round yesterday - but had to turn it off after it became (like many other LPGA tournaments) the Michelle Wie show.
She finished T82 but Golf Channel made sure they showed her on every hole. The fucking female Tiger Woods. Argh!!!!!
-
Looks like Michelle Wie is gonna miss the cut at the Swinging Skirts. I hope that Golf Channel and the LPGA can find someone amongst the 70 or so who finished better than that OVER-HYPED BINT to feature in rounds 3 and 4

To be quite honest is Swinging Skirts a bit sexist and patronising a name for a golf tournament?

Swinging Skirts is a Taiwanese Foundation set up by their PGA/LPGA (??) to promote golf - the "skirts" bit AFAIK refers to kilts. If anyone on here speaks Thai can they translate this for us? It's the "About" bit from their web page.
高爾夫其實可以很年輕

The group name Qun Bai Yao Yao sounds youthful and energetic in Chinese. Though the English translation “Swinging Skirts” may sound a bit condescendingly girlish, there is in fact a high-minded and totally non-sexist reason behind the name. Golf originated in Scotland, where the traditional attire for men is the plaid kilt, and out of respect for this tradition, during Swinging Skirts tournaments the men wear kilts. Since in Chinese the same character qun is used in the compounds for both “skirt” and “kilt,” it is clear that “Swinging Skirts” in English fails to capture the full significance of the Chinese name, which is not gender-specific.

I like Rory, especially the way he's matured over the last couple of years.
However, to injure himself in such a pointless way less than 2 weeks before the biggest tournament of the year is a bit moronic.

Will be a real shame if he misses it and I'm sure the sponsors will be fuming.

As open as Katie Prices legs this year. Having said that I think Henrik Stenson will piss it.

Sadly the governing bodies of sports put short term financial gain over long term involvement in these instances.

Their own fault - their golf coverage is piss poor and Peter Allis needs to be retired

Woods is going to end up like that Dupont nutjob (featured in the film Foxcatcher).
You can see it in on his face when he screws up - like he's about to do a Clark Griswold "You're all fucked in the head" rant.

At least this morning's delay means that Eldrick will make it into the weekend.
Why have sim many players in The Open. One delay and the schedule is thrown out completely

Delayed again, they'll be pushed to get this over the line now by Sunday night

Potentially no play until 3pm. Monday finish me thinks.

I assume that an amateur can't turn pro during or immediately after an event in order to win the money
-
They have to go to 'Q school' and earn their card (right to be a pro) but I think you need a handicap of 1 or less.
You can enter the qualifying rounds of The Open and earn your right to play as an amateur.
-
They have to go to 'Q school' and earn their card (right to be a pro) but I think you need a handicap of 1 or less.
Not quite right. The Q school is to qualify for a card on the top rank of European golf, the European Tour, but there are tours ranked below that that professionals can play in, the 2nd tier in Europe is the Challenge Tour, the top ten of which at the end of the year qualify for a European Tour card.
There is also a third tier of tournaments such as the EuroPro tour and the Nordic Golf League below that.
Because Dunne entered The Open as an amateur he can't win the cash, but he can turn Pro as soon as the tournament finishes if he likes, he could then apply to enter the Challenge Tour (and would almost certainly be accepted) and will also almost definitely get some sponsors invites to top tier tournaments due to his Open exploits. If he wins enough money to get into the top 110 on the European Tour from the invites he won't need to go to the Q school either.
-
Surely you should get an exemption from Q School if you win one of the Majors?
-
You would get an automatic invite back to that particular Major for life, but otherwise I don't think that scenario has ever come up before since the Q School started!
*EDIT* Actually that's wrong, because all Majors count towards the European Tour I think, so winning one gets you a four year automatic European Tour card, or something like that anyway.
-
I'm rooting for Harrington as I had him e/w (top 7 places😯) at the start of the tournament at 150/1.
Failing that I'd love to see Garcia win.

It was very much "end of an era" stuff yesterday. With Allis, Robson and Peter Dawson jacking it in and this likely to be the final Open the BBC cover (although they are slated for next years event there are rumours they may renege early), one felt that the Championship will change considerably.
I will be the first one to admit that Sky will always technically beat the BBC when it comes to covering an event such as this, but it's the intrusion of commercial breaks that will destroy the slow build of tension, the immersion in the atmosphere and the general feel of the course and location. No longer will we see those coastal vistas, quirky wildlife and spectator shots with ptihy (and almost from a bygone age at times) commentary. The latest car advert or promo for Super league will jar significantly with the serenity offered by the drizzle and silence of a bogey on the 8th hole.
Allis recieved plenty of brickbats yesterday for his commentary, some of it well deserved, but even when berating Andrew Cotter when he thought he was off mic or joshing with Maureen Madill he retains a certain aura that will be difficult to replace.
The competition will continue to be a success, the R+A will have their money and Sky may add of few subscribers but many of us have lost a gloriously lazy, summer Sunday afternoon in front of the TV that has provided so many memories over so many years.
-
Well said Nev, indeed the end of an era. Didn't realise Alliss was jacking it now I thought he was doing Troon next year then he'd be off.
Sky's golf coverage is bloody awful, ad break what every 8 mins or so for a 5 min break , it will kill the viewing experience of The Open.
Such a shame.
-
It was a great finish to a bizarre/brilliant Open, it had everything; bad weather, good weather, birdies, eagles, an amateur leading, disappointment...great stuff.
I was pleased for Zach J although my money was on King Louis ( I did manage to steam in to ZJ in the play off).
As said above, I will miss the BBC coverage.
-
Well said Nev, indeed the end of an era. Didn't realise Alliss was jacking it now I thought he was doing Troon next year then he'd be off.
I'm sure that Alliss said that he and the BBC would be doing next year's Open. After that, Sky take over live coverage and the Beeb do highlights.
I think that he was referring to this being his last Open at St Andrews.
Alliss may be a sexist old fossil (his previous comments about women being allowed to play when they want were far worse than his kitchen quip on Monday) but he's an entertaining commentator. Pro-Celebrity Golf was must-see viewing in my house when I was a kid.
Also, and most importantly, I used to work with his cousin's daughter. She was hot !
-
I do like Aliss, a sort of Roger Mellie of golf

Well done jason day on a well deserved 1st major.
Day is an excellent player and has been knocking on the door for a long time.
However, he is so bloody slow to take his shot! I hate people on the course (possibly slightly lower standard!) who take forever when in the group in front of me. One day I will definitely end up doing time.

My problem with golf at club level is that lots of people tend to take it far to seriously. Even the best club golfers are just a bit less crap than the rest, so stop acting as if you're pondering the Road Hole and just hack the ball in the general direction of the flag.
I had the same problem when I was playing club squash in the Gloucestershire League and the Monmouth League. The home team players had to score/referee. I used to just laugh at people who took it too seriously or questioned my decisions.
Eventually I was only picked for away games, which was fine by me.
-
On the tee I think I take about 45 seconds to address the ball, 2 practice swings then unleash. Possibly 1 minute. Thing is it's not a game you can rush. I allow 4 hours min for 18.
-
I'm currently playing from a handicap of 12 (which has been much improved over the last year or so). So i'm pretty decent, but still inconsistent. I love playing, but just cannot abide people who take the piss on the course.
People who take 20 practice swings and then hit it about 20 yards.
3/4 balls who you have to badger them until they let you play through. They seriously think you are the rude one, even though they knowingly hold you up.
People who wait for the green to clear before playing their second shot to a par 5 (despite the fact the green is 300 yards away and their drive went less than 200)
People who don't replace their divots or rake bunkers.
I think it pisses me off because I have to play at a quick pace to play well. If I have to wait I get out of rhythm

I'm off 18 tayls have been as low as 14 but don't play enough to sustain that. I know what you mean. I've been lucky this year as most courses I've played have been fairly quiet. Enjoying my new titleist 913D which has added at least 30 yards off the tee for me .

I'm generally playing about 2-3 times a week. You're right. It is a game you have to play regularly to improve or even stay at the same level.
The worrying thing for me at times is that my driver (ping G30) is my most reliable club!

Drive for show put for dough tayls.
I've sorted my tee to fairway game nicely now my short game is all over the place.

A much better day on the fairways of Breadsall Priory yesterday, I had a 76. Much happier than last week at the FoA.
In answer to the slowplay question, I think it really does depend on three things; awareness of others/the game, level of ability and not copying the pro's. The latter is a real problem with some...practice swings galore, lining up putts to the millimetre even when 30ft away, not being ready to play etc etc. I think courses should have notices on the tee boxes reminding people of slow play and to let groups through, replace divots, pitch marks and so on. It's generally better at courses that have an on course marshal.
Yesterday, we played (4 ball) 18 holes in 3hrs 45mins. We had a group of older members behind us (4 ball) playing 'speed' golf, they were more or less hitting in unison, especially to the greens. We couldn't let them through as we had 2 ball in front, with another 4 ball in front of them. It was irritating, but I now use a saying a fella told me whilst playing...'no matter what's happening on the course; slow play, bad weather, not playing well...it's better than work'.

Nothing worse than someone right up your arse when you're having a round particularly if they've nowhere to go. Luckily the courses I've played of late have been fairly quiet.

I run a fairly large golf society and typically we get 35-45 people at each of our events. I'm forever trying to stress to our members how important it is to keep up the pace of play yet for some, no matter what you do, they won't speed up.
I'm one of the better players (society handicap 5) and like to play quickly, but the speed of some of the 'lesser' players is woeful. It's not just because they are taking a few more shots, it's the general 'faffing about', things like not having your glove on when it's your turn to play and my bugbear, getting to a tee (with a clear fairway) and standing there for a minute filling in your scorecard. Just take your shot and fill in the card when one of your playing partners is driving!
The worst thing though is those that have been told by their professional that they should have a pre-shot routine, as that is what the pro's do. They go through this lengthy process and still duff it, but everything takes twice as long as it should.....tossers!
Rant over, early tee-off at Whittington Heath in the morning, it's always quick at 7.30am.

Tiger Woods shares the lead at the Wyndham at -11. He needs to finish top 2 to qualify for the Fed Ex Cup
-
Solheim Cup all level after opening foursomes.
Wonder what all of the hugely successful and talented Asian golfers make of this - they'd probably defeat a combined US/Yurp side.

Back on the Queens Course Gleneagles next Tuesday . Can't wait
-
One of my favourite courses Silhill, bloody lovely. Have a pint in the clubhouse and take in the views.
I would say that Gleneagles is one of my favourite places in the world.
-
Agreed, it's a little slice of heaven.

Followed 2 ladies around today. They were pacey but the 4 ball in front of them refused to let them through. 4 1/2 hour round of golf. Very annoying.

The biggest issue here is women on a golf course in a playing capacity. ;)

Were you in the fourball in front of them?

Accusations of non-sporting behavior and an epic choke on the final day - the European Solheim Cup team stole the US Ryder Cup Team's playbook.

Not a bad weekend for Jordan Speith ,cheque for £7.5m for FedEx cup win. Day gave him a good run, poor year for Rory.

Had the chance to play the West course at Wentworth on Saturday. Beautiful clubhouse, bar etc with great service. Practice facilities were good as well. The main course was very quiet; we caught the fourball in front of us at the 8th (Iain Dowie and his mates).
The course though was very tough. I didn't play that well, but the greens were slick and if you were out of position you were doomed. I did manage to par the two par 5's that finish the round...which was nice.

Will you be joining the club ?

Probably swerve that RedSox, I prefer something more exclusive; no riff-raff.
