Title: Next five matches - how many points?
Post by: Smirker on December 21, 2014, 09:59:16 AM
Swansea away
Sunderland home
Palace home
Leicester away
Liverpool home

Not a bad run there, should be looking at 9 or 10 points imo.

9 isn't beyond the realms. I'd be happy with 7

7 bare min. Three wins shouldn't be beyond the bounds though.

Four. Simply because when things start looking good, it all goes tits-up spectacularly.

Hopefully, we will be miles away from any relegation scrap by the end of those five games. Palace and Leicester are wins. Sunderland should also be. Draws against 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' and Swansea.

My biggest worry is the next three. Not so much the opposition themselves but the state of our squad and the fact that we'll have 3 games in just under a week.
I'd take 3-4 points from the next 3 then 4 points from Leicester and Liverpool.

I think there are three wins in there. You would fancy us in the home games and Leicester away.

We have the makings of a very decent side now. The defence of Guzan, Hutton, Cissoko, Okore, Vlaar and Clark looks as good as most in the top half. Sanchez and Delph are in form and motoring. Bacuna looked the part yesterday and either Cleverley/Westwood can do the donkey work to let Bacuna/Delph press forward. The only problem we have is getting in a partner for Benteke in the Jan window who can score goals
and contribute to the team performance. Then Weimann and Agbonlahor can come on when required and N'Zogbia can be transferred listed as soon as possible for all I care.

Its beginning to look quite encouraging isn't it?

What I thought last night - and it's open to debate - is that almost halfway through the season and there's three or four games where you'd have fancied us to get something and we haven't. Everton given their poor start, QPR, Spurs and the Stripeys, and in two of those we had a player sent off. Against that, winning at Stoke and Liverpool were both bonuses as was yesterday given their form. I make that six points we've dropped and six we've picked up. Given the diabolical decisions against and the injuries we've had, maybe, just possibly, we aren't as bad as we've been making out.

There's no reason why we can't get ten points from the next five but eight should be a minimum.

Spot on Dave, but it's not complicated this business, put a brilliant centre forward up front and he makes average to poor performances turn into good ones. It is that simple. Benteke is absolutely essential to us. No body else can make something out of nothing like he can and it just shows how vulnerable we are if we lose him.

Post by: Clampy on December 21, 2014, 11:42:00 AM
What pleased me more than anything yesterday was that we picked up a decent result so soon after a defeat, which is something we don't do very often under Lambert. The sign of a good side is picking yourself up after a game like last week and putting it right instead of going on a losing streak like we normally do.

As for the next five games, going on another unbeaten run would be nice. Two wins and three draws is what i'm going for.

Swansea away D or L
Sunderland home W or D
Palace home W
Leicester away W
Liverpool home W or D

So I reckon about ten points being optimistic.

They do but I don't think we're as fit as some other sides and our squad just seems to be dropping like flies with injuries and suspensions.

Think we'll lose at Swansea.

Hopeful of 4 points against Palace and Sunderland (both will park the bus so we won't get 6 but hopeful Benteke will make the difference in the Palace game again) and 4 points against Leicester and Liverpool.

28 points by mid January hopefully, safety would be pretty near then.

Are we going to do this all the way through the season? ;)

With Villa who knows, wouldn't surprise me if we beat Swansea and then dropped points to both Sunderland and Palace.

Will go for eight points from that lot.

Pretty confident we'll beat palace and Leicester

Sunderland at home will be tight

A draw at swansea would be a good result

Liverpool game is more dependent on them than us. If they keep defending like this then bwnteke can tear them a new one

Providing the lads put in the same effort they showed yesterday which was The Full Ron Saunders, I can't see us losing any of the following games. Eleven points from a possible 15 will do so much to change our season. There are no easy games this season but we're showing such determination we're hopefully turning from a side that was hard to watch to one that's hard to beat.

Swansea away DRAW
Sunderland home WIN
Palace home WIN
Leicester away DRAW
Liverpool home WIN

I agree there is the basis of a decent team there but keeping Benteke on the pitch is crucial.

I think the defence is decent, I am not convinced by Cissoko though.

The balance of the midfield does not look right  and we are hugely reliant on Benteke.

A decent manager would have us competing for a top 6 spot.

Well said Legion. Also I agree Dave were not as bad as has been said. All the politics of bomb squads have gone with Faulkner, two good players in January and the 2nd half of season should be relatively calm after previous seasons.

Apart from the FA Cup Final, which will be tense until Benteke completes his hat trick.

We'll get a backs-to-the-wall win at Swansea and beat Sunderland convincingly. Just when I'm starting to think we might be okay after all we'll then draw with Palace, get knocked out of the cup by Blackpool and lose to Leicester and Liverpool.

6 points.

17 games and a record of 5-5-7 isn't dreadful. The performances have been though in quite a lot of those games. If it had have been 17 games where we always looked like we wanted to take the game to the opposition then it would be something to build on. As it is, we're 12th and that feels like as high a position as we can achieve. i expect us to lose more and we do rely a lot on Benteke. Without him we can finish anywhere from 19th upwards, with him and we can finish anywhere from 7th/8th down.

Disagree here.  We are much improved, but right now are roughly the 11th or 12th best side in the league.  If we have a steady season this year then we can start thinking about the top 8-6 next year depending on holding on to our top players (some of them at least), and adding a few more of real quality.  And if needs be bringing in a new manager.

Hoping swans leave Bony on the bench again on Friday.
Sunderland have hull on Boxing Day so win that they will be resurgent when they come to villa park after yesterday's result.
Palace we should destroy on NYD
Leicester away will be another burnley away 1-1
Liverpool at home, another bogey side like Yanited but sense a 1-1

I don't see us destroying anyone at this time of year. In the unlikely event that we find ourselves with a comfortable lead with twenty minutes or so to go, we'll take some of our better players off to give them a rest.

I can't believe how many poeple think we'll lose to Swansea. I think it'll be a low scoring game or even 0-0 but with our new mean spirited defence I think we've every chance of nicking the 3 points with CB special.

Jedinak is out of the Palace game due to an International call up. PL has a Jedi mind lock on Rodgers. Leicester will get beasted by Benteke. I think we'll win them all.
