Last night I paid to get in the Holte Suite pre game and had a few drinks with friends.
As is now the norm for us, we returned at half time for a quick pint. When I ordered my beer, the price had increased 20p from before the game.
When I asked the lady serving me why, she said that they are told to add 20p on to the price of every pint served during the half time break.
I'm not sure if it's just me, but I am absolutely disgusted the way the club can use this to exploit the fans who have made the effort to support the club. I know it's only 20p, but the principle and the way it is done is unforgivable.

This club used to care about the fans. Things like this tell me that they don't care as much these days.

I think they're onto a winner. They probably know by half time the fans will be in dire need of a drink and will probably pay it. It's probably that 20p extra per half time pint that's paying for Lamberks contract.
-
Don't be surprised by anything anymore.
-
Small club mentality!
-
They added 'lamp tax' I reckon ...
-
as this turgid dross continues to do the Lambert Walk to oblivion, home games will soon be played behind empty doors, so grabbing the odd 20p here and there on a pint is an understandable, if unacceptable, marketing strategy.
-
They have been told to add on 20p every time we score so at least last night was a one off.
-
Great stuff, nice to hear that isn't it. I keep on saying the club is no longer recognisable from the one I used to support so passionately. It probably paid for that nice 140 years old video which glosses politely over all the shit or you can think of it as paying for some of the incredible haircuts we saw on display last night. Mind you, Southampton would be in the Champions League if was based on them alone
-

Boom tish, excellent!
-
Seems to me that having run out of sticks to be at the club with people are now resorting to twigs. The inevitable Richard Moore contribution confirms as much.
-
I enjoy Richard's Lambert rants, bettered only when he goes off on one about Chelsea.
-
The extra charge does sound a bit unnecessary. I still don't understand why people can't go an hour and a half without having a beer though.
And anyway, what the fuck has the 140 year video got to do with it?
-

I thought the crowd at Villa Park last night all looked exceptionally young? It was like one of those women's internationals where they invite loads of screaming kids along to make up the numbers. I shouldn't have thought they needed any sticks in that case, or were they to beat them with?
-

Jeez, you are a brave man saying that on here, I have less supporters on H and V than Weimann has brain cells in his head. Mr Lambert is a very nice man anyway, he's just a shit football manager.
-

Watching Villa requires booze, it turns in to the football equivalent of the 2am pick up. By 90 minutes of alcohol we start to look a decent side and you walk away thinking it wasn't that bad.

Of course I'm brave. I'm 12,000 miles away.
-
He even looks a bit like Weimann, slightly more switched on though
-

Watching us play without a few pints inside me is not an attractive prospect.
-
Was it Carlsberg?
If it was are you sure the price wasn't 20p?

The Katie Hopkins of H&V.

I don't know who she is Clampy, but I'm sure she must be horrendous. I will have to ask my daughters if they have heard of her

Probably for the best, I'm sure you're not missing anything these days not getting to Villa park. Not that I'd know and I'm only 10 miles away.

Oh, I see she works for the Sun, no wonder I've not heard of her. My daughters won't have either in that case

Well, that makes two of us. I just googled her and that was the first link that came up, she doesn't look very nice so I can see why you likened her to me. She also looks a bit like someone who used to be in the Apprentice

I've no idea what you look like so the looks didn't come into it.
-
Thank you Clampy, but I both look horrendous and am so in person so you weren't far from the mark at all, albeit inadvertently

Why thank you ;-)

I loved your jacket but I'm not sure the hat goes with the trousers

Have we even scored at the holte this season, another record by Lambert, get rid.
utv
-
that's not even remotely funny or ironic Paul

So now I'm a nose, special needs and Paul Lambert. Lol. What decorum.

I'm probably wrong, but don't pubs/licensed venues have to display the prices of their drinks? do Villa display 2 prices?

Maybe posting something constructive would help.
-
only on here would supporting our manager be deemed not constructive.
-
if he was doing anything worthwhile of course it would
-
There is a fair bit of "ooooh look at me" going on in here today.
-
I'm probably wrong, but don't pubs/licensed venues have to display the prices of their drinks? do Villa display 2 prices?
How often does anywhere take notice of that?
-
I think the whole 20p thing is more indicative of how many businesses value their customers, rather than just the club.
-

Yep. I think this thread is fairly aptly titled.

No idea, I was just asking whether pubs are obliged to display their prices and, if so, do Villa advertise 2 prices? Very naughty of them if DBTW is right.
-
I used to drink in a bar that would knock 20p off a pint every time there was a goal.
-

They're supposed to advertise all prices by law but I can't remember the last time I saw it anywhere.
If someone told me the prices go up for a short time I'd instinctively think they were on the fiddle but that's just my nasty, suspicious mind.
-
Prices are 20p cheaper before the game as the club have long since regarded kick-off as the end of "Happy Hour".
The latest twist this season is the introduction of "Utter Misery Hour" after the game for those of us that have to endure Aston Hall Rd/Lichfield Rd. Even last night with only 25,000 there. If the football doesn't drive me to despair the journey home is guaranteed to.
-
Clearly a legacy of the MON years.
-
Well I arrived with my lad around 5.45 and was told it was complimentary free entrance. Ordered food and was advised it was cheaper before 7pm by 45p compared to the menu. Do they still charge less for a beer in the ground if you get there earlier? I assume they are early bird offers.

Serious comment, that HT increment is an absolute disgrace. The club is taking the piss out of the original hand that fed. It's one thing trying stunts like this on when the football side is hunky dory but to be doing it now is an absolute piss take.
Angry.

Why is it ok to do it when the football is 'hunky dory'?

Every time we complete a pass, they stick 10p on the price of refreshments.

Prices are 20p more at half time than before kick off. Which one is the "normal" price would seem to be irrelevant.

They give you back 10p for every goal scored but you have to pay them 5p for every pass that goes astray. A throw in which reaches a Villa player entitles you to an extra half pint. Paul Lambert saying anything vaguely coherent and you win a year's supply of free lager. Coherent and intelligent and you have free lager for life. Expect Carling to post record profits for 2014/15

Not if the price is the higher one on non-matchdays.

I breaked full at the lights, RED, damn, stay calm, breathe. I flicked the radio to Capital Xtra and glanced left. Rita Ora came on. It was there, he was there. Focus . I felt my brain tighten then relax then tighten again. Without glancing back I decided it was time to loosen my tie and play with the gearstick. Thoughts drifted to "fuck it let's go with everything is shit mode".
No. Not here. Not now. This is a race, not just a race but the race.
-
Duuuuuuuuude, that's deep man, y'know?
-
I got the thing about the drinks being 20p less before the match, rather than 20p more during it, but I can also see that this could be just semantics really.
Are drinks also 20p more in the concourse?
I'm only asking because it's really easy to get a drink in The Holte Suite at half time.
It's also a much more warm and pleasant place to spend half time than the concourse, especially in winter.
The loos are nicer, and there doesn't tend to be a queue in those either.
I don't mind paying an extra 20p for all that, especially if there is the choice not to pay it on the concourse - it'd kind of make sense.
-
I'm pretty sure that if you buy soft drinks and possibly also food in the concourse under the Holte there's an advertised early bird price or something of that ilk. I think the pies are 10p cheaper until an hour before kick off? Not sure there's anything to see here.
-
Last night I paid to get in the Holte Suite pre game and had a few drinks with friends.
So just to get this straight. An American chairman with no connection to Brum who's spent 100s of millions of pounds on Villa is beyond the Pale because a lifelong Villa fan is being asked to spend an extra 20p a pint on some beer at HT. Another new low indeed!

It's like my mother in law. Objectively and factually Dave is correct, but the relationship has broken down to the point I can't be objective or factual.

Yes it is. The price is irrelevant, the reasons and way they do it are disgusting.
Ive currently in my 30th year of a season ticket, so i feel entitled to be able to pass on my feelings.
And I think you have hit the nail on the head with you comment regarding the American having no connection to Brum. He simply hasnt, and we are being made more aware of it increasingly regularly. So for that one comment only, I thank you.
Now, we go again to Burnley. Are you going?
-
Well said DBTW, I agree with you entirely regarding the principle at hand and about our owner.
-
I must be missing something as to the matter of principle involved in this situation that reflects badly on the club or its owner. There have been many things to bash Aston Villa about over the last 4-5 seasons but I don't think this is one of them.
-
Can You H&V fence sitters make up your minds
You criticise silhillvilla and Richard Moore because everything is shit and every post to negative
Then you criticise Westly for being to positive and not seeing reality
Maybe they have more extreme opinions on either side than those that choose a more middle of the road approach like me,
but it strikes me certain posters are just taking cheap shots at a lot of their posts because they think they have the backing of the majority of the site and feel all safe and warm in cumfortably numb situation
Gets a bit boring to read a post by Silhillvilla, RM or Westly to then know someone will have a pop for no real apparent reason, apart from they see the situation differently,
isn't that what the message board is about
-
I'm not sitting on the fence on this one. I don't see the Club have done anything wrong at all. It is cheaper if you get there early. What is the problem?

No, The prices are standard for a beer pre game. The price increases at half time and goes back to 'normal' after the game.

Thank you John, glad you've noticed. I can guarantee to have any one of my posts on here descended upon by what seems like a flock of seagulls on a waste tip. Which is an apt analogy, as most posters think my views are garbage anyway. I'm perfectly ok about that though, this is just a football website where hundreds of people whose views I respect, but don't know, post their opinions. And it is by far and away the best Villa site around and always has been. There are far more important things in life than H and V, though not the Villa! Sadly, I know an awful lot of people who are good friends who have left the site for the reasons you cite but that is their choice and I feel they are missing out in the long run.

First time I've seen this thread.
I see the title "Another new low" and immediately think we have had a Ched Evans style scandal involving one of our players, or Randy has popped over and taken a big shit on the centre-circle or something...but no, it's 20p on a pint, and that's it.
Another new low indeed eh?

Its the principle behind it Dave. Would Tamworth put the prices up at half time knowing there are no other available options to fans?

They have a Happy Hour before the game to entice fans into the clubhouse, so yes, the prices are higher at half time than they are before the game. By about 20p as well I think (no real ale so I don't drink in the clubhouse myself).
-
Villa don't have a Happy hour though, they just increase the prices at half time.

Like I've said, I do think it's a bit unnecessary but I wouldn't go so far to call it 'a new low'.

Why are you so positive then that the half-time price is an increased price rather than the pre-match being a decreased one?
As from what other people have said, many of the other outlets have promotions pre-match so surely it wouldn't be crazy to think that the Holte Suite might do the same?
I'm not saying that the club definitely aren't being terrible, rapacious bastards I just can't see why we're so sure that they definitely are.
-
The lady behind the bar advised me of the half time increase.
The amount is irrelevant really, its the principle thats annoyed me.
There is a huge gulf between the club and the fans at the moment, they just dont seem to have any kind of idea any more.
-

Personally i'd make that kind of accusation against clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal who happily charge up to £100 a ticket.
-
The lady behind the bar advised me of the half time increase.
That doesn't really answer the question though. What if she's an agency worker on her first shift? She's going to be told that the prices go up after kick-off, probably without too much detail on the marketing reasons as to why that is.
-
She was the bar manager
-
She was the bar manager
What exactly did she say though? If it is a special price before kick off, then technically the price does go up at half time, but only to the standard amount.

She said that they are told to put the prices up 20p more at half time than 'normal'
-
This 20p on a pint question could end up being right up there with the crowd against Parma and Barry's non penalty

I'd write to the lead singer of Echo and the Bunnymen if I were you !

Dear Mr Echo...
-
I think this call for a full description of this Bar Person, did you get a photo, have you checked her facebook page, have you requested her CV?
Who exactly, and we want names here told her to add 20 pence, when did they tell her and more importantly under whose authority was that person acting on?
There is more to this than meets the eye you know.
Keep them peeled. Good night.

We need that bloke who rang up Randy's New York restaurant to pose as a potential Holte Suite customer.
-
I hope this appears on Newsnight.

I'm as mad as they come which is fine, equally I called the Calum Robinson 48 hours ahead of it happening, which makes me as mad as lambert / Keane . I'm not sure what point I'm making but there it is. John e , good post.
-
Thank you John, glad you've noticed.
This "Poor me" line is getting a bit monotonous now.
I know David, please forgive me, I think you are absolutely right as always

Spare Us The Cutt....ing comments!
Sorry, best I could do, particularly as your post made me laugh out loud, very good

This is another reason why I was asking if it was only The Holte Suite....
People who go in there before and after the match have paid to get in - so the 20p reduction may be with respect to having paid an entrance fee.
In fact - thinking about it, that is something I have noticed - it is definitely 20p cheaper in The Holte Pub & Holte Suite before the game than it is on the concourse - I know this because one time Jane & I tried to work out if we could drink enough to have a 'free' pint (no - not even us! Not even between us!)
Anyone in the lower Holte can go in there at half time, whether they have paid in or not - so they don't get the 20p reduction, & there isn't time to piss about trying to work out who paid in and who hasn't.
This would make perfect sense to me - sorry!
-
I wonder how much a pint in burnley is ? £1.50 ? £1.60 ? Divided Britain

But he's only come back because another striker has gone out. Otherwise, he'd still be at Preston.

White coffee in McDonald's, Milton Keynes £1.19, Macclesfield £1.39. Wtf????

I can understand why DBTW is pissed off but think Amfy has nailed the reason. So can we leave it there and get back to sagging Lambert, Lerner....

Lambert is sagging, you say?
I used to work with a lad from Sheffield who used the greeting "How's your pants?" and you were expected to reply well up, sagging or drooping or some such to describe your mood. Fair play to him.
There can be little doubt that PL is carrying heavy shopping and has sagging pants.
I note with interest that nobody has mentioned the disgraceful Black Shirt episode.

I think John M's fence sitters are out in force now.

John Mooney? Is he back?
For my part, of I have banged on elsewhere about the disparity between Edgbaston, where beer prices have been frozen for some years, and Villa Park. £3 for a pint of Banks Bitter in the members lounge. And £200 for annual membership (also frozen).
Preemier League though innit. Nature of the beast.
-
Villa don't have a Happy hour though, they just increase the prices at half time.
But anyway, and in no way whasotever is this- "another new low"?
You were slightly annoyed (or even very annoyed, I don't know what 20p on a pint does to your Chakra), but either way, it's not "another new low" for our football club is it?
-
Has anyone been in The Lions Club of late ? How much is a pint now and is it still £3 in ?

More importantly, does the price of a pint go up and down?

Eh? You mean we weren't blaming them for this as well?

Keep telling it as you see it Richard ,i always enjoy hearing your views mate

Yes, extreme, non troll opinions are the fruit in fruit cakes here.
I too like Richard Moore's bilious rants. They remind me of Basil Fawlty's opinions of Sybil.

For me, it shows how low the club can stoop and is a long line of new ones.
20p doesnt make a difference to anyones Chakra, as you put it, I never said it did. The principle was my aim of anger
-
Long line of new ones?
Go on then, away from the playing side, which we all know is bloody awful at the moment, what else has the club done to stoop to new lows?
-
Drinking on the concourse. That sounds very continental .
-
Maybe they put the prices up to discourage people from drinking more, just in case they get on top of phone boxes and start singing? *winky face*

When I started my supporters club in 2007 the club and supporters were so close, we felt valued. Over the last four years the gulf has become huge, and things like this just make it widen more.
There is basically 'no need' for the fans really any more financially, so I get the feeling that the club aren't upset at all if the crowds dwindle.
The increase of booking fees, the reduction in supporter club away allocation, the way the club used the allocated grant for away fans (most of it still undisclosed) are all in this line of lows.
I love this club, and I think the fans are the most important thing of any club.
It's a pity they dont see it that way

In other words, you're a unhappy Lions Club (or maybe ex) chairman with an axe to grind.
-
Nope, I signed the code. Im a Happy Chairman ;)

Which club are you running Dave? Sedgley?

I'd say the way they stitched up the Supporters' Clubs this season is scandalous. I'm glad I don't run one, after what I've been told, because I'd have given it up straight away.

This free away shirt campaign once you've borrowed £200 onto a credit card leaves a nasty Wonga like taste in the mouth.
The club are just out to rinse the fans of every Penny.

I had no idea it was compulsory.

Of course it's not Dave but it's dangling a rather unsavoury carrott.

Use their credit card instead of the other half dozen you've got and they give you something. How disgraceful.
-
Well that's one way of looking at it. I was at polar opposite view , hello young man you need an away shirt and your first credit card.
-
I really don't think anyone needs to be sold on the idea of their first card now.
-
I think it's important to point out that there was no away fans grant.
The Premier League asked, and the 20 clubs agreed, to set aside £200,000 of the new Sky money to boost away support. The Premier League doesn't have money of its own as such, and needed the clubs to agree to ringfence some money they were getting from elsewhere for this to happen. So it wasn't extra money as such, but it is fair to say it was a very small part of a very big cash boost that the clubs have recently received.
In the overall scheme of things, it isn't a lot to ask of the club(s) to give a little of the Sky money back. I would definitely agree that the principle of the money being set aside in this way is a good one, and that it was undermined by the club adding up the cost of the free coaches at 'how much it cost them to give them away' rather than 'how much they cost'. However - it being the club's own money, rather than a grant does put a slightly different slant on things & I think it is worth making the distinction.
I also agree that The Lions Clubs didn't do at all well out of the distribution of the money, especially in the first season, but the purpose was to boost away support, not to reward loyalty. Therefore the Lions clubs were not the intended target of this initiative. A therefore separate, but important issue, is how the loyalty of Lions Clubs Chairs and members is rewarded - some balance is needed for existing 'full-time' supporters given the furore over the away fund & the apparent reduction in Lions Club benefits, it just isn't good PR to neglect your core fans in this way.

You're probably right, I'm out of touch. I remember getting my first Access card in the mid 80's . Really upset my mom. I don't think she's ever used credit .
-
Weren't we one of the first clubs to offer free travel?
-
Possibly. Along with steak & chip suppers.
-

I do. They are dangerous.
