That's nice of them.

This Capaldi came from Blues youth team and played for Cardiff for a while before dropping down the leagues. Was at Tamuff for a while last season but was shite.

Final score from yesterday

Rushall Olympic 2-7 Villa U21 - FT: It was a magnificent seven for Villa's youngsters as they continued their unbeaten start to pre-season. Thomas Strain opened the floodgates with two first-half goals before Henry Cowans, Jordan Graham, Graham Burke, Jerell Sellars and Michael Drennan got in on the goalscoring act.

His Dad John (Sugar) Capaldi played for Villa in the youth and reserves and then played local football both Saturday and Sundays. Little Scottish forward.

I was in the same year as his brother (Stuart) at School, bluenoses for sure. Think he played for Boldmere a year or two ago.

They were drinking in the Yenton during an England game a few years back which maybe gives an indication why Toni Capaldi dropped rapidly down the leagues!

Is that the same Charlie N'Tamark that played for Walsall in the 90s?  He must be knocking on by now.

Joe Cole and Jores Okore stepped up their match fitness as Villa began the Barclays U21 Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Stoke.

Okore completed the full 90 minutes of the clash at Bodymoor Heath, while Cole and fellow first-teamers Jack Grealish, Chris Herd and Callum Robinson also got some match action under their belts.

It was Robinson who scored Villa's goal as they hit back following Oliver Shenton's early strike.

The visitors took the lead after just four minutes when Shenton's deflected shot found a way past Craig Hill.

But from there on Villa took charge of the contest, with Grealish and Cole linking up well in midfield.

The best chance of the early part of the contest saw Cole feed Tom Leggett with a clever ball into the right channel. Former Southampton full-back Leggett sent a low cross towards Robinson who was denied by the feet of Stoke keeper Dale Eve.

But Robinson made no mistake with a similar effort on 36 minutes. This time Grealish patiently held up the ball before releasing captain for the afternoon Michael Drennan, who fired a left-foot cross into the six-yard box for Robinson to convert.

After the break, the claret and blues pushed for a winner but Robinson was left frustrated by the heroics of Eve twice in quick succession. The keeper pulled off a superb double save, firstly keeping out a Robinson volley before getting up to claw away his follow-up.

At the other end, Hill's shot-stopping exploits were equally impressive - the Villa custodian getting down quickly to tip away Brek Shea's bullet diving header.

Drennan thought he'd won it for Villa in the dying seconds when he tapped in a cross from substitute Jerell Sellars, but the Irishman was flagged offside.

VILLA: Hill, Leggett, Kinsella, Herd, Okore, Toner, Robinson, Cowans, Drennan, Cole, Grealish. Subs: Watkins, Lewis, Calder [for Herd 63], Sellars [for Grealish 73], Graham [for Cole 73].

STOKE: Eve, Shotton, Barber, Lecygne, Coulson, Watkins, Parry, Shenton, Shea, Adam, Taylor. Subs: Skapetis, Gyolai, Thomas [for Taylor 76], Ward, Strong.

Grealish tweeted this afterwards:
@JackGrealish1: Nice lil 60 minute run out today... A absolute pleasure to play alongside Joe Cole.. What a player 😳😱

Hopefully we get to see them have a run out in the first team together.

We turned up to Bodymoor Heath today to watch the u-21s game, having checked on the website that the game was on. On arrival, we found out from a security guy that the game was being played behind closed doors, as 'Joe Cole fancied a game'.

Shame the fans couldn't be informed about this in good time.

Villa got back to us and were very apologetic, offering us a pair of free tickets for today's game that we couldn't attend due to previous commitments.

Very pleased with this treatment -good to know that our club listens to its supporters when things go wrong.

I could be wrong but I think I was once told that technically all games at Bodymoor are behind closed doors, because if they were announced as being open it would have to be regarded as a sports ground with all that implies for safety legislation and facilities. Fortunately common sense usually prevails and it's rare that anyone is turned away without good reason.

A scoreline like that is never good, but not entirely unknown (I remember scoring ten against Arsenal reserves a few year ago, much good it did us in the long-term). Albion might have a phenomenally good crop of kids this year like Southampton or Middlesbrough have had, we might have put out in effect a reserve youth side, it might have been our first years against their second  years. You don't know and throwing out insults at anyone who doesn't regard it as a hanging offence is a bit daft.

Well, you did imply that:

1. He'll never let anyone criticise the club
2. He makes snide remarks.
3. He insists on having the last word.

All of which are pretty insulting, really. The fact someone else said it doesn't mean it is no longer an insult.

I find anyone who gets worked up about a defeat at U-18s level a bit sad really.
95% or so of these players, historically, won't make it into our first team and of those that do maybe one of them will become an established first teamer, and that is the sort of stats we have had when we won youth cups!

Scorelines (should) mean nothing at academy level its the development of the player that should be paramount

Watch this last night on Bein Sports in Oman, very surprised when it was announced.
Good points, at 17 looks like we have another good Cowans on the books, his movement and body posture at times is scary, it is like watching Sid in his prime, has also got a very good eye for a pass.
Stellar I think was his name, had a impressive first half, decision making at times let him down, but full of running and ideas.
Kinsella the centre half looks like he comes from the Baker Clarke school of defending, looked awful.
Let us hope nothing happens to our goalkeepers as the lad playing tonight looked awful.
Drennan, did not do alot at all, looks like he has a good touch, but no pace what so ever.
Arsenal had 3 over aged players on the field, Diarby being one and it showed as the game went on, they controlled and there centre forward only a young lad looked a good standard, I also liked the look of their right back, young spanish lad, worth keeping an eye on his development.
Major concern, was at times, we looked like the first team, with no apparent shape and at times looked like we had run out of ideas, loved Sid as a player but was a bit disappointed with the way he set the team up and the lack of change when it was apparent throughout the first half there wing backs were a major danger and we did nothing all game to counter that.

To me I was disappointed in what appeared to be a lack of awareness of what was going on/where people were which then made for poor decision making. Also our passing IMO was not of the same standard as Arsenals which meant they were able to control what they did far better than we did.  One particular instance was when we broke through the middle with their left back up field and our player running free into that position.  Unfortunately instead of the ball being played into his path on the edge of the box, releasing him for a clear shot on goal, it was hit too hard and too far in front of him so that he just managed to stop it going out for a goal kick.

I think we should play a couple of over age players in the team - to give them match practice but also to be an "old head" and help the younger ones around the pitch.

Wasn't that called Reserve Team football back in the day?!!  You do sometimes wonder why that disappeared? If people are to be believed it started with the influx of foreign players "refusing" to play reserve football when not selected for the 1st team. Sounds a bit far fetched to me but maybe just a natural development with large squads and 7 subs.

I wonder why Joe Cole or Okore weren't given a run out? I believe you can play two or three over age players so would have thought it would have done those two in particular good to get some game time as well as helping the younger players having an experienced player in the team.

From the O/S
Christian Benteke got a solid hour under his belt as he continued his return from injury today.

Benteke was named in the U21s team for their clash with Bolton at Bodymoor Heath.

And the fab forward played just over 60 minutes in the 3-0 win - scoring one goal in the process.

Benteke bagged a penalty - the opener - on 33 minutes after Trotters defender Andy Hughes handled in the box.

Joe Cole hit the second on 56 minutes - a wondrous shot which gave the keeper no chance.

And the scoring was completed on 83 minutes when Thomas Strain tapped home a rebound after Jack Grealish's initial shot was saved.

It was a very strong side named by Gordon Cowans - as Benteke, Grealish, Jores Okore and Shay Given all played.

Okore, like Benteke, is on his way back from injury after missing a large proportion of the 2013-14 campaign with a knee injury.

Cole is also enjoying a renaissance return, after coming back into training last week following struggles with a thigh problem.

Grealish and Given were both handed minutes on the pitch after spending time on the bench with the seniors.

Overall it was a very good afternoon with a solid victory for the claret and blues.

Christian Benteke scored on his long-awaited return from injury as Villa secured their first league win of the Barclays U21 Premier League season at Bodymoor Heath.

As well as the Belgian international, Gordon Cowans named Shay Given, Jores Okore, Joe Cole and Jack Grealish in his starting XI and their experience told as the claret and blues dictated play from start to finish.

They carved out their first opportunity after just four minutes when Riccardo Calder headed wide from right-back Tom Leggett's right wing cross.

With his trademark runs, winger Grealish shone throughout and began to link-up well with Benteke.

The home side took the lead through Benteke's calm penalty after Bolton's Andy Hughes handled in the box.

Grealish almost doubled the lead moments later when his rasping shot crashed off the crossbar after a fine individual run - something he carried out throughout the 90 minutes.

Summer signing Cole played the full 90 minutes and his range of passing unnerved the Trotters' backline and the 32-year-old was unfortunate to see a couple of efforts drift wide of the post.

He didn't have to wait long to get on the scoresheet, though, when just shy of the hour, he picked up a loose ball after Bolton had failed to clear and curled his shot into the top left hand corner leaving Ross Fitzsimmons rooted to the spot.

The visitors were presented with a glorious opportunity to reduce the deficit when Henry Cowans' trip in the area saw referee Gareth Mellor award a penalty but Zach Clough could only blaze his shot over the bar from 12 yards.

With 13 minutes remaining, Grealish danced his way past a number of white shirted defenders - found Cole free on the edge of the penalty area but the former Chelsea man's first-time volley sailed just over the bar.

Substitute Strain put the icing on the cake when he tapped home from close-range after Fitzsimmons could only parry Grealish's cross.

VILLA U21: Given, Leggett, Wildin, Cowans, Okore, Toner (Webb 76), Sellars, Calder, Benteke (T Strain 63), Cole, Grealish. Unused subs: Watkins, Crooks, Abdo.

BOLTON U21: Fitzsimmons, Maher, Perry (Campbell-Young 57), Finney, Taylor, Hughes, Clayton (Lester 72), Vela, Illiev (Woolery 57), Clough, Hall. Unused subs: Sellers, Campbell.

That's true, but they've still had done well at this level and the ones who have good loan periods tend to be those who do better in the long run. Lambert has said that in the past we've spent too much time concentrating on winning the reserve leagues and not enough on bringing players through. For all his faults at least he's trying to do this right; ultimately, wherever we finish in whatever the Central League is called now isn't anywhere near as important as getting even one extra player into the first team.

Villa have been handed an away tie against Wolves in the U21 Premier League Cup.

The round of 32 draw has thrown up an all-West Midlands affair between Gordon Cowans' side and their rivals from the Black Country.

A date and time is yet to be confirmed for the clash.

The young claret and blues side have entered the competition at the last 32 stage alongside other clubs with Category One academy status.

Yes but surely Newcastle and all the others do exactly the same by loaning out players so the standard of opposition should be fairly equal.

It's been pointed out before that the better reserve players, who would have been playing and probably beating Reading tonight, are out on loan where they will do more good in the long term. I don't know for certain but it seems that the side we're putting out this season is a lot younger and more inexperienced than it used to be, hence the mixed results.

It may be ok putting weak reserve sides out most weeks ,but surely getting thrashed most of the time will do nothing but harm to young players just starting out.

They're not getting thrashed all the time - they won last week - and they're not just starting out. Even an 18 year old will have been playing for Villa sides for years. If Darren Bent had played tonight he might have scored a hat-trick but it wouldn't have counted for anything in the long run.

Johnson no, in my honest opinion he is not good enough to make the step up,not ar Premier or Championship level anyway. Donacien i am not sure about ,i have not seen to much of him to be honest. As for Gardner, well just like Robinson,i think he would make a difference if he  had a Villa manager who believes in him. Look how Lambert treated Robinson on saturday for example. He brought him back from Preston, where by all accounts he has been playing well ,to sit on the bench. When the time came to make a change and take weimann off,did he bring on Robinson on for the last 15 minutes. No he chickened out and brought a midfielder Richardson on instead

Aston Villa U13s 2 Stoke City U13s 1

An absolute stinker of a game. Quality winning goal by Cam, though. Lovely through ball just in front of the half-way line followed by a strong, powerful run battling against two Stoke City defenders and finished off with a sweet strike from the right hand edge of the penalty area across the goalkeeper into the far left hand corner of the goal.

FT: Villa U21 0-0 Middlesbrough U21. The claret and blues have picked up a well earned point in Burton after an evenly contested game. In a cagey affair with few opportunities, Craig Hill's double save at the end of the first half proved crucial. Gordon Cowans' young lions carved the better chances of the second period and could have stolen the three points at the end when 'Boro goalkeeper Connor Ripley saved well from Daniel O'Brien's low drive. Skipper Kevin Toner then headed over a corner kick in stoppage time. Villa return to league action on Monday January 5 2015 when they travel to Brighton and Hove Albion.

I bet if you went back over the years we've lost a number of times to lower league teams in the Youth Cup. I'm not going to get worked up over a pre-season friendly or the Youth Cup. And I'm certainly not going to make out it's some kind of humiliation for the club.

The fact that we could'nt even name a full quota of subs for the U21 match just goes to show in my opinion how bad the club is being run. Was expecting the excuse that we had two teams out on the same night .Grasping at straws or what ? If we did'nt have something like 12 players out on loan, making up a full subs bench would be no problem

And you feel that sitting on the bench in a Youth Cup tie is a better way to get used to a career in football than playing for a lower-league first team do you?
Title: Re: Youth, Reserves and Ladies 2014-15
Post by: pooligan on December 16, 2014, 12:25:37 PM
No i think instead of sending out on loan over more than a team of reserve team players and having to fill it with youth team players who if you ever watched a reserve or youth game (which i doubt) you would see are not ready for a higher grade of football at the moment.

As for your question , i think the way we use to mix a few promising youngsters in with a few experienced pros in the Mcdonald days and produduced the likes of Cahill,Davies,Ridgewell,Gardner and Whittingham to name just a few is far better than what the club is doing now.

A question for you, do you think getting beat 12 -2 at Chelsea, 6-0 at West Brom like the youths have this season and being knocked out in the big one in youth football to a League one side is good for our young players?  Last season i was at Villa park to see us scrape home 4-3 against Plymouth and anyone who was there will tell you we were praying for the final whistle, while the season before i believe we were knocked out in the first round at Peterborough 4-0 .

Good game at Chezza last night.

Villa played virtually all the football but Chesterfield ended up with three galoots up front and we got drawn into a long-ball game.

Best players were Hepburn-Murphy who reminded me of Dazzler and scored a fine goal, Suliman who looked good in midfield and at the back before limping off near the end. Taylor had a good first hour and had the beating of his full-back. The centre-half looked decent, too.

An unlucky defeat rather than a humiliation, I feel.

Speaking as one of the few Villa loyalists who turned up to watch.*

* How's that for the 'better fan than you' stakes?

Brighton U21 2-0 Villa U21 - FT: Villa U21s kicked off 2015 with a disappointing defeat to Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Goals from Jimmy Muitt and Charlie Harris secured the points for the Seagulls, who prior to kick-off were bottom of the Barclays U21 Premier League Division Two.
It was a frustrating night for Gordon Cowans' team. Brighton controlled the play for long periods and restricted the claret and blues to half chances.

Blackburn U21 3-2 Villa U21: Young lions bow out of Premier League Cup

Blackburn edge entertaining clash in Leigh.

Villa bowed out of the Premier League Cup despite coming from behind twice in an entertaining Cup contest at Leigh Sports Village.

Bradley Bauress' tap in four minutes from time sealed progression into the quarter-finals after Jack Grealish and Jerell Sellars had twice levelled for the claret and blues.

Gordon Cowans' youngsters were indebted to goalkeeper Craig Hill who produced a superb reaction save from David Carson's close range effort which looked destined to ripple the back of the net.

The home side came out of the traps early with Carson and forward Jordan Slew linking up well.

Just shy of half an hour, Slew had a great opportunity to open the scoring but he headed a Tommy Spur cross wide.

Callum Robinson unnerved Blackburn's backline all evening and looked a threat upfront for the visitors and his persistence won set pieces.

One corner fell to skipper Kevin Toner but he could only shoot high over the crossbar.

Villa almost took a surprise lead on 38 minutes when Rovers defender Anthony O'Connor almost diverted Riccardo Calder's cross into his own net.

Blackburn took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Villa only partially cleared a Spurr cross and Connor Mohoney reacted quickest to give Rovers the lead.

Whatever Cowans said at half-time proved dividends as his side were level after 46 minutes.

Grealish's effort from the edge of the area deflected off a blue and white shirt past David Raya.

It was then Blackburn's turn to react and they did so accordingly - Dean Rittenberg finishing well following a fine run and pass from John O'Sullivan to restore their lead on 57 minutes.

Sellars came on in place of Graham Burke and levelled for Villa within a minute.

Under pressure from Grealish, goalkeeper David Raya tried to dribble his way out of trouble but the ball fell to the substitute who fired home.

Robinson continued to attack and was unlucky to see two efforts - one from a free-kick and another from close range saved.

But - with Villa looking the more likely to steal victory and a last eight meeting with Newcastle - Rovers took the lead for the third and final time through Bauress' strike after Hill did well to keep out Rittenberg's header.

Villa are back in action on Friday evening where they take on Stoke City in Macclesfield.

BLACKBURN: Raya, Nyambe, O'Connor, O'Connell, Spurr, Carson, O'Sullivan, Bauress, Mahoney, Rittenberg, Slew (Preston 66). Unused subs: Crump, Doyle, Lavelle, Wall.

VILLA: Hill, Leggett, Wildin, Cowans, Lewis, Toner (C), Abdo (O'Brien 87), Calder, Robinson, Burke (Sellars 65), Grealish. Unused subs: Bannister, Crooks, Webb.

Stoke U21 0-0 Villa U21 – 15mins: It’s been a lively start at the Moss Rose with both teams looking comfortable in possession. The home side will count themselves unlucky not to be ahead after Robbie Parry had two efforts in quick succession cleared off the line as Villa failed to deal with a corner. At the other end, Callum Robinson has been in the thick of the action for Villa and stung the gloves of City goalkeeper Dale Eve just moments ago.

Robinson missed a penalty.

HT: Stoke U21 1-0 Villa U21. Stoke lead at the break in Macclesfield after a dramatic opening 45 minutes. Forward Robbie Parry has looked particularly threatening for Stoke and it's his penalty on 20 minutes which separates the sides after Alfie Crooks’ trip. Villa forward Callum Robinson continues to threaten for the visitors and was unfortunate to see his effort cleared at the second attempt after goalkeeper Dale Eve had spilled an effort towards the latter stages of the opening period. The visitors grew into the game and on the stroke of half-time, won a penalty of their own after Jack Grealish was fouled in the box. Robinson stepped up, saw his first effort saved as well as the rebound.

FT: Stoke U21 2-0 Villa U21: A goal in either half saw Stoke come out on top at Macclesfield’s Moss Rose. Robbie Parry’s penalty and Oliver Shenton’s neat shot early in the second half did the damage against a spirited Villa. The claret and blues were awarded a penalty just shy of half-time but Callum Robinson saw his effort and the rebound saved by an inspired Dale Eve. Despite the setback, Gordon Cowans’ side continued to attack but could not find a breakthrough

We've scrapped the idea of sticking older players in the reserves and now it's a genuine under-21 (sometimes under-18) side with a lot more out on loan. The 17 year old "new John Terry" we've signed from Maidstone was on the bench for them last week.

I watched him last Saturday against Chelsea apparently.  I say apparently because Villa have stopped giving us the hand written team sheets they used to dish out.

From the Official Site I think he was the Left Back who I didn't recognise on the day.  He was well off the pace but Chelsea were brilliant going forward and their Right Winger had him on toast.

Bolton U21 0-2 Villa U21 – FT: Two moments of brilliance from Graham Burke and substitute Harry McKirdy have earned Villa three vital points at Bolton’s Macron Stadium.
Few would disagree it was a deserved victory after the claret and blues enjoyed the better of the opening stages. Goalkeeper Craig Hill was a standout performer for Villa, two world class saves from Hayden White in the first half and the pick of the lot, a point blank stop from Kaiyne Woolery's header in the second made the difference. Burke’s fabulous strike on 77 minutes looked to have won it but McKirdy put the icing on the cake, as he latched onto Jack Grealish’s pass and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner from long-range.

I've had to remove all my YT vids of Cam in action due to the club getting every parent of their Academy players to sign a form agreeing to stop videos of them from being posted on any social media site showing them playing for the Villa. If anyone can still access them please PM me as I do not want Cam and/or his Dad to get into any trouble.

Villa U21 3-0 West Brom U21 – FT: It’s all over at Bodymoor Heath as Villa record their second consecutive Barclays U21 Premier League win. Graham Burke’s early strike put Villa in control before Jack Grealish, who had earlier been denied by Albion stopper Alex Palmer on various occasions, doubled the lead with a precise finish from 18 yards. The visitors did carve opportunities of their own and star man Adil Nabi was a threat but Jed Steer was alert. With just under 20 minutes remaining, Joshua Webb made the game safe as he tapped home Henry Cowans’ corner after Albion failed to clear.

....and a dominant performance in from our girls who could have scored more and were literally running rings around the home side.

Libor Kozak is set to make his long awaited return from injury in tonight's U21 meeting with Wolves at Molineux.

The striker has been sidelined for 14 months after breaking his leg on the practice pitches of Bodymoor Heath in January 2014.

Loan moves for Lewis Kinsella and Graham Burke sees Niall Mason and Rory Hale come in while regulars Jerell Sellars and Riccardo Calder are back in the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, Carles Gil features in his second consecutive match for Gordon Cowans' side.

Villa U21s make the short trip to Molineux as they look to make it a hat-trick of victories over their Black Country rivals for the 2014-15 campaign.

Back in October 2014, goals from Jack Grealish and Jerell Sellars helped Villa to a 2-1 win in the reverse Barclays U21 Premier League fixture at Burton.

The two West Midlands sides also met in a Premier League Cup last 16 tie.

Michael Drennan's early goal was the difference that day.

Cowans' Young Lions are in good form ahead of the trip and have picked up maximum points in their previous two matches.

Two late strikes beat Bolton at the Macron Stadium before an experienced claret and blue XI saw off West Brom 3-0 at Bodymoor Heath last time out.

Goals from Graham Burke, Grealish and Joshua Webb secured victory over the Baggies.

Meanwhile, basement side Wolves go into the clash on the back of a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Derby last Thursday.

The division's draw specialists have struggled for consistency.

They have won one, drawn eight and lost eight of their league games.

Kick-off at Molineux is 7pm.

WOLVES U21: McCarey, Matinyadze, O'Hanlon, Evans, Hayden, Upton, Ismail, Kellermann, Wilson, Hunte, Graham. Subs: Simpson, Burgoyne, Weeks, Harris, Bancessi.

VILLA U21: Steer, Leggett, Toner (C), Mason, Hale, Calder, Cowans, Sellars, Gil, Hepburn-Murphy, Kozak. Subs: Watkins, Webb, McKirdy, Green, Suliman.

It's good that Kozak was fit enough to last 75 minutes though. Presumably he can have a place on the bench now and maybe come on for the last 20/30 minutes. He's someone that could pop-up with one or two key goals before the end of the season.

Reading U21 1-0 Villa U21 – HT: Liam Kelly’s free-kick separates the sides at the Madejski. Villa were out of the blocks from kick-off with Rory Hale and Harry McKirdy testing goalkeeper Daniel Lincoln. As the game opened up, the lively Kelly’s audacious lob from a difficult angle forced Villa stopper Bradley Watkins to tip his effort over the bar. Niall Keown also went close, latching onto a well-worked throw-in. Reading broke the deadlock after 37 minutes as Kelly hit an unstoppable free-kick into the Villa net from 25 yards.

Reading U21 1-0 Villa U21 – FT: It’s finished in Reading as Villa fall to a narrow defeat at the Madejski. Liam Kelly’s first half free-kick was the difference between the sides. Villa were on top at the start and carved the first two chances of note. Rory Hale went close from distance before Harry McKirdy was denied from close-range. Martin Kuhl’s Royals grew into the contest and began to create opportunities of their own. Niall Keown also went close after a cleverly crafted throw-in. Villa stopper Bradley Watkins made a number of saves in the second period from substitute Harry Cardwell and the impressive Kelly as Reading pushed on. To their credit, though, Villa always looked dangerous on the break, particularly through Khalid Abdo and Andre Green. In second half stoppage time, the claret and blues put their hosts on the back foot. Abdo met Green’s pass but Daniel Lincoln held well.

Villa U21 1-0 Brighton U21 – FT: Villa have ended their 2014-15 season with victory over Brighton at Villa Park. Graham Burke’s goal earned the points as he finished off a fine counter-attacking move just after half an hour. Gordon Cowans’ side had a number of efforts with Gary Gardner and Callum Robinson going close in the opening 45 minutes. Brighton were better after the break but still looked vulnerable to Villa’s pace. Full-back Jesse Starkey went close and caused problems with his set pieces. Credit must go to Villa stopper Jed Steer, though, who produced the save of the match, clawing away a header from the lively substitute Daniel Akindayini. Jerell Sellars, Robinson and Gardner also had further chances to extend the claret and blues' lead

He looked pretty good in the NextGen winning side a couple of years ago but the fact that he hasn't pulled up any trees on his loans, is 21 already and is out of contract in the summer suggests to me that he probably won't make it at Villa.

If we do win the cup and get into the Europa league we'll presumably use it to give some kids game time. Do we have enough of them in the pipeline?

I imagine Gardner and Robinson would get chances, but Gardner in particular would presumably be close to match day squads anyway

Who else? Steer perhaps?  Donacien and toner at CB? kinsella LB? Green, Hepburn-Murphy and Burke in attack?

There seem quite a lot of names bandied about. But our youth team results seem worse nowadays after seeming to be always top of the league. Might in part reflect more use of loans out which I agree wth

I think it's also partly that we keep a team together for 2 years so we tend to do worse every other season because we're playing first year academy kids against sides who are using mostly 2nd year kids.  I don't know if that's the case this year but it has been in the past, it's one of the reasons we've won a lot of stuff at that level because our teams get longer to gel than most.

Lewis Kinsella and Riccardo Calder are among the young claret and blue hopefuls going for glory in this weekend's Hong Kong International Soccer 7s.

The duo - who have both featured in Villa first team squads this season - are part of the 10-man squad that arrived in the Far East today.

Club legend Gordon Cowans and U21 development coach Stuart Taylor will take charge of the young Villa side in the tournament which takes place at Hong Kong Football Club on Saturday and Sunday.

There is a return to Hong Kong for young striker Jerell Sellars - who played at the 2013 event - and Tom Leggett and Harry McKirdy who were in last year's squad.

Goalkeeper Brad Watkins, midfielder Rory Hale, centre-backs Kodi Lyons-Foster and Niall Mason and wideman Corey Taylor will make their Soccer 7s debuts.

Villa will begin their campaign in Group C on Saturday against hosts Hong Kong Football Club [10.25am HK time/3.25am UK time], before facing another local side Hong Kong FA U18s [12.07pm HK/5.07am UK] and New Zealand outfit Wellington Phoenix [1.32pm HK/6.32am UK].

The knockout stages take place on Sunday when Villa could come up against the likes of Atletico Madrid, Newcastle, Stoke, Leicester and West Ham.

Villa have earned a glowing reputation in Hong Kong, having triumphed at the Soccer 7s in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010, as well as being runners-up in 2006 and 2012.

The club has also provided the player of the tournament on six occasions - Jonathan Brewer [2002], Stephen Cooke [2004], Gabby Agbonlahor [2006], Zoltan Stieber [2007], Barry Bannan [2008] and Daniel Johnson [2012].

Jack Grealish has also topped the scoring Soccer 7s scoring charts two years in a row.

I don't really get the soccer sevens thing? It's not a particularly reliable testing ground

There's nothing to get. It's just an end of season tournament for our yoof that we tend to do particularly well in.
Interesting that Grealish got top scorer twice though, tends to point to the theory that once he finally tucks one in he will become the goalscoring midfielder that he was right through his youth career.

With how long we've been doing this, the coaches must think the tournament is a good experience.
