Title: The USA Tour Thread
Post by: Dave on July 20, 2014, 11:16:42 PM
Pre-match, match and post match thread for the games against FC Dallas (23rd July) and Houston Dynamo (July 26th).

Quote
New signing Philippe Senderos has spoken of his delight at joining up with Villa for the first time during the tour of Texas.

Senderos is in the 26-man party - along with fellow new recruits Kieran Richardson and Joe Cole - and he's thrilled to be with the claret and blues as they gear up for the 2014-15 campaign.

"It feels great to have joined up with the squad and I'm genuinely looking forward to the challenge ahead," Senderos said.

"Being out here in the United States will definitely benefit us as a group and it will be an opportunity for myself and the two other players who have just come to Villa, Joe Cole and Kieran Richardson, to get to know our new team-mates much better.

"The climate will be warm and conditions perfect for training and the competition from the two MLS teams we're playing will be really good as they're in the middle of their season.

"I've had a break following the World Cup, which was something fantastic to be involved in, and I'm really excited about the season ahead."

In other news, Christian Benteke and Libor Kozak have also joined the squad in the US while continuing their recovery and rehab from an achilles injury and a broken leg respectively.

Texas Tour squad in full: Brad Guzan, Jed Steer, Shay Given, Matt Lowton, Alan Hutton, Jores Okore, Ciaran Clark, Philippe Senderos, Nathan Baker, Chris Herd, Joe Bennett, Kieran Richardson, Enda Stevens, Fabian Delph, Ashley Westwood, Karim El Ahmadi, Leandro Bacuna, Gary Gardner, Charles N'Zogbia, Joe Cole, Jack Grealish, Andi Weimann, Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke, Darren Bent, Libor Kozak.

I see Enda is still clinging on to his time at the club. I thought last season was the enda the road for him here.

Interestingly that's a squad of 26.

Of those 26 3 don't need to be named in the premier league squad (Grealish, Okore and Steer) but we have Vlaar to come in.  That suggests to me that we're seeing, pretty much, the premier league squad there and with 1 spot (potentially earmarked for Ki) available unless there are sales.  The only really odd one is Stevens, I'm not really sure what he brings to things as the 3rd left back.

Are the kick offs for these two game U.K friendly at all? Spurs for example kicked off against Seattle at 9pm on Saturday for example.

Think the first one is at two in the morning, the second one is a more watchable 10pm our time.

Especially as being third best left back at Villa these days is like being the third best singer in Jedward.

Isn't meant to being sold somewhere? Maybe that's not far off which is why he hassn't gone. Have to say though bit stunned to Stevens there. I guess he could be carrying oranges or something

More of a training/bounding trip really.   Interesting to see Given back in the fold.  I would say that his experience around the squad can only help, and it will be good for a youngster like Steer to feed off him.  Don't think the actually matches mean too much.

Alternatively they're players we think would benefit from a loan and we're in discussions with clubs regarding all of them so staying back makes sense. I'd certainly expect that for Carruthers at least.

Are you counting Robinson as well there?  I've just assumed that he thinks Robinson will benefit more from a little while longer with the kids, he's young enough to take our time with him for now, I'd like to see him either rip the reserve league open or do the same on loan with someone. He had flashes of that last year, another season developing the same and we'll have a guy who can't be ignored any more.

Villa's matches appear to be the only ones not being shown on TV in the USA - every other pre-season US EPL side tour match is on live (and with multiple repeats).

Chesterfield (away) Wed 30th July, 7.45pm
Walsall (away) Tue 5th August, 19.45pm

that's too bad. Especially as they have shown previous tour games live this trip should be no exception. And why is the resolution on AVTV when watching games/highlights utterly garbage? Is something a little HD too much too ask?

Rumours of a Serie A club taking him on loan, Chievo Verona I think.
I'd imagine we're also working on loan deals for Tonev and possibly Robinson as well, unless Callum picked up an injury. I would have thought he'd be very much in Lambo's plans.

When we were in the States 2 years ago, iirc 2 of the 3 games were live on the US club's sites, but not AVTV.

I think on AVTV it is just extended highlights available not long after the game has finished.

There are little buttons that allow you to toggle between SD and HD, or at least there were the other night. Nothing that allows you to toggle between N'Zogbia and Garrincha unfortunately, but I am sure Jack is working in it.

Brilliant!

Although being pedantic you would only find that last season was a dream. On the upside you would then get to choose between the 1980's version of Victoria Principal or Priscilla Pressley. And you would also be an oil billionaire.

But you would still live with your mom.

Matt's not a proper Villa Fan. Boooooo!
Now I'm going to bed and miss the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games so that I can be up bright eyed and bushy tailed at 1.30am to watch our plucky little side take on the might of FC Dallas.
Oh by the way, does anyone know if JR and Bobby Ewing are playing for them?

Fact of the day.
Did you know that the home of FC Dallas, now known as Toyota Stadium was once called Pizza Hut Park?
And we think stadium names like Sports Direct.Com Stadium are bizarre. ;)

Also, saying that it's in Dallas is a bit of a stretch. It's like playing in Worcester and saying its in Birmingham.

The first post on the thread:

"Pre-match, match and post match thread for the games against FC Dallas (23rd July) and Houston Dynamo (July 26th)"

As for tonight's opponents, I recognise two of the current squad - Hendry Thomas who spent a couple of years as a reserve for Wigan and Peter Luccin who played for various big clubs around France and Spain around ten years ago and is now 35.

They've also got a Colombian called Andrés Escobar, but I'm guessing it's not the one who was murdered in 1994.

It's boiling down there, Dallas are in the middle of their season and doing well, we're in preseason and getting our fitness up. All in all decent first half. Knocked it about, no long balls of note, a little sloppy at times at the back.

Solid result 2-0. We played some really nice stuff, pretty much all on the deck. Lots of passing and movement, possession has clearly been stressed in training. Very impressed with Okore again, Zog, Senderos and Delph. Enthusiasm naturally tempered given the opposition, but we look very assured indeed 2 games into pre-season.

Good win. Second half was a bit like last season in places. We got decent possession in their half but inevitably funnelled the ball backwards. First half with Grealish and Gardner we looked far more creative but at the same time lacked a bit of presence.

Nice free kick from NZog but he did little else.

A few positives to take from that,
Jack Grealish looked very good. The way Bent and Weiman combined for the first goal.
Richardson looks as if he might be a bit of a handful. The Zog is back but looked ring rusty.
Senderos looks as if he's a good acquisition. We tried to keep the ball on the ground.
We still give the ball away needlessly at times and we still seem to go into headless chicken mode when defending deep.
All in all not bad at all.
And so to bed.

I was expecting the mob around my house at around 2am. What happened?! Disappointed

Just watched the game on YouTube (it's still there). Can never read too much into these games and we didn't really play a side that would play in the league. Though interesting that we're not obviously trying to blood a 352 formation

First half

I thought grealish did great for half an hour. Though I don't think he beat his man once and did start to get crowded out. So encouraging, but perhaps not ready yet

Having said that Weimann and bent did sweet fanny Adams apart from the goal which the keeper should have done better on

I'm conscious that I've a heavy bias against Chris herd but his distribution and blind alley running was pretty hopeless I thought. Bacuna also looks out of place in central midfield. Gardner was ok

I thought enda Stevens did quite well though Hutton was poor

Second half

Good n'zogbia free kick though again it went straight where the keeper should have been. Pretty fast though!

I thought for about 15 mins you could really tell it was a more first choice midfield as we pressed  it and passed it well

I'd like to think that the sloppiness, bad passing, blind n'zogbia alleys, lack of hold up play up front, weak distribution from the back were all symptoms of pre season. It's just that none of that was new!

Overall, in a game where there wasn't too much pressure on the ball the ease with which we gave it away is still a big concern

Thought we did okay without having to exert ourselves too much. Second half we looked better, but I think largely by virtue of having more or less our current first choice CM. First half I thought Gardner did well, but Bacuna and Herd are not of the required standard in midfield.
In principle a player like Herd could suit us, as he allowed Gardner to make a few forward runs, but ideally we need a Premier League quality version and someone who can pass the ball. Bacuna is either an okay winger, potentially decent wing back, or mediocre fullback or central midfielder.

Grealish did alright. He glides round the pitch, but ended up crowded out as he was really our only player with guile in the first half.

Zogbia was a positive for me. Great goal, looked quite lively. Still got major work to do on his fitness, and still frustrating at times, but that threat of genuine quality is something we could do with. Richardson played well again too.

The onus on passing the ball has been the most positive thing about the two games thus far. It's not always worked and we're still missing something in midfield, but we're moving in the right direction. That said, I'll be curious to see how we play against Parma.

A bit obvious Boz!

The pre-season games are to get the players match-fit and playing together successfully. If that works out we'll be in a better situation than if we'd lost all of the pre-season games and looked completely lost.
One step at a time, and yes, the Stoke game will be a better measure...as it will be for Stoke too.
Don't think Lambert's gonna change the way he talks up every game...that's his style, whether we like it or not.

Decent showing.  We looked good the counter, and the shape of the team pretty good, with some encourging performances, the best being from Grealish who looks a really prospect, think he can be a good player at both ends.  We were still a bit sloppy at times in prosession, and the back four once again looked shaky.  But am pretty pleased overall.  I say get past this tour, and then start giving the new signings more minutes a head of the season.

I have seen a suggestion elsewhere that Tonev was not able to go on the US tour due to him having a criminal record?

There are so many obvious rejoinders to that about shootings....

Come off it CL you are all in the same country. It's not as if you had to fly abroad or something! ;)
There were people who had flown from the UK, there was also a couple in their 70s who had driven from Winnipeg.
The players could not be bothered to walk half a pitch length.

fans are no longer represent the majority of the revenue for player wages. I'm sure the players thank the TV companies, sponsors, agents. Not saying they don't appreciate the fans but we shouldn't kid ourselves regarding the dwindling financial influence we have.

Who pays the TV companies for the privilege of watching the football? Who buys the products that the players advertise? It's still "us".

I reckon a huge percentage of attending supporters also have Sky. I was assuming that Toronto meant all fans, not just those regularly in attendance, particularly because he used the word "we".
Title: Re: The USA Tour Thread

agree. Football supporters who actually go to games represent a fraction of the wider sports audience that buy sports packages on TV. Again, this isn't me saying they shouldn't have come over to thank the travelling fans, but just that our level of influence on footballers wages isn't what it was many years ago. That gap has grown immeasurably and will continue to grow. At the top level football could play in front of a simulated audience and it would still appeal to the TV audience.

My mate works for Surrey CC and he said their players either finds the fans 'trainspotter geeks' (obsessed and psyschophantic (sp?)) or 'aggressive haters'.  As a result they'd prefer to not mix with them unless absolutely necessary.

Title: Re: The USA Tour Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on July 27, 2014, 04:08:02 AM
two games in four days played in heat approximating the surface temperature of the sun. We looked good in spells, mediocre in spells and sloppy at times, the latter often caused by just looking exhausted. That said, we still very much need that creative player to come through or join the club or we'll look as one dimensional as did last season. Bent is limited without any supply, Weimann huffs and puffs, and Gabby no longer looks the player he once was. We need a player or two to not only break up the opposition but also one that has the confidence and ability to bring it forward and see runs that others are making. Grealish is the closest thing to it right now but it's not fair to put that on him yet.

Let's hope the next couple of weeks sees Delph and Vlaar sorted out with new deals and some money being spent. The season is less than 3 weeks away.

Pretty crap game in truth. The first half team with Delph/Amahdi in midfield looke dworryingly threadbare

Grealish is a big plus. I dunno if it is a good sign that Hutton has played well again.
Title: Re: The USA Tour Thread
Post by: JD on July 27, 2014, 04:44:38 AM
Agree Steve.
We looked better when Richardson came on. The movement up front in the first half was non existent.

Hutton did look good (worryingly), as did Grealish.

Still it was a pre-season game played in very difficult conditions so we shouldn't complain.

What was with the ads when a corner was being taken though? Very annoying.

Just watching on YouTube as can't sleep. They look tired and it looks really hot and humid. I hope that explains the performance as we look awful. Really substandard.

The 3412 in the first half hasn't worked at all. 4 of the back 5 just aren't good enough for premier league football. I really like Lowton and I want him to do well but I think you'd have to start Hutton ahead of him at the moment. Senderos isn't great but he's much better than baker or herd.

With ball retention as bad as ours has been playing this formation just leaves Delph and KEA looking too light. The front three didn't do much at all and we looked too narrow up front

All in all there's a lot of reasons not to read too much into the game but it hasn't done much to convince me we're going to do anything other than really struggle. I might give up football for September given our fixtures
Title: Re: The USA Tour Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on July 27, 2014, 07:35:06 AM
Second half was better and the back four worked much better than the three. Hutton was our best player :-|

interesting we've barely seen Richardson at left back. I'd assumed that's where he'd play. And he might. If he's not going to play there we'll need another left back. Bennett or Stevens can't be trusted

Grealish does look to have more quality than most of our players. He's lovely to watch. But I've not seen him really hurt teams that much on this tour - though he's had a couple of close through balls where he waited a little too long. Weimann, n'zogbia, gabby and bent haven't been great but they all have hurt teams. Hopefully that comes but you do just wonder about his lack of pace.

Bent's hold up play was hopeless.

Gardner did well again I thought. Looks much sharper than last pre season. Would love to see him make it. Bacuna has been shit so far this pre season

I see lambert has been eulogising about the performance. I hope Keane is going to say to him, 'look Paul that was shit', when relevant. I never know if lambert believes his own hype or if he's just doing it for players' confidence. We've sure had a lot of 'world class' performances for a team that's been battling relegation for two years

I realise that it's a sideshow, but I really don't get why anyone thinks Herd is a CB ... and why do they keep playing him there when we need a solid CMF player. Herd could actually have a role to play in CMF - albeit as a squad player - but has no chance as a CB.

Re Hutton, I'm not surprised that he looks better than Lowton and other options: he is, after all, an experienced international fullback. Lowton, meantime, was a promising FB who spent most of last season - a key season in his development - arguing with the club about stuff.
Title: Re: The USA Tour Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on July 27, 2014, 09:21:17 AM
On herd - I just don't get why some people think he could do a job on midfield. His passing is atrocious and he runs into blind alleys. He's had one good game at right back in his career. I genuinely think he's one of the worst players in the league.
Title: Re: The USA Tour Thread

Post by: JPartington on July 27, 2014, 09:57:03 AM
Agreed on Herd. I can never understand why anyone advocates him playing at all to be honest. He is just so so poor on the ball. A huge liability.

Unambition aside for one moment, I believe that Senderos and Richardson will prove to be a couple of relatively astute signings. Both have that little bit of class in possession which we generally lack throughout the team.

The thing with our midfield is, that it gets sliced through too easily. We've often needed a holding player in there to offer some protection to our defence. Unfortunately the only player in our squad currently, who can do that is Herd. He did okay there under McLeish, in as much as he showed plenty of energy and disrupted the opposition. So in that regard I see why some advocate playing him in midfield, to allow players like Delph and Westy to have more freedom to express themselves.
That said, he is a poor player, and he doesn't seem to have quite the same brimming enthusiasm he had 3 years ago when he was last more of a regular in the side. Obviously off field problems have been an issue.

It is clear as day though, that we need a quality player in midfield who can mop up the mess, but is comfortable on the ball with it.

Must admit I completely forgot we were playing again, these late starts aren't helping so just reading the comments over the last few pages.

Must say it sounds Gabby is having a very lacklustre pre season following on from last year which is not good enough as we need him to perform with our main two strikers missing.

A case of him being told he's not getting a new deal whatever's happening?
Title: Re: The USA Tour Thread
Post by: supertom on July 27, 2014, 12:37:07 PM
I've been a staunch defender of Gabby, particularly the post O Neill years when his impact on the pitch has dwindled with the exception of a few months under McLeish and 4 months under Lambert in his first season.
However toward the end of last season, apart from his form and end product going to shit, there was also just a worrying lack of motivation and effort on the pitch. That appears to have continued in pre-season. He just looks like he's not that bothered any more. The difference between Gabby and Bent say, is that Bent's never been a go get them sort of player. When he's not on the end of a chance putting it away, Bent, like Van Nisterlrooy, or Berbatov as well, has a body language that looks quite lackadaisical. They look lazy, without that necessarily being the case, or indeed as players you get used to them looking like that.

In Gabby's case he's gone from being a player who looks like he loves playing for his boyhood club, runs all game and puts in the yards, to someone jogging lazily around with the occasional half-assed burst of energy. Now, that he can't go on as many surging runs as he used to, or chasing down defenders quite like he did 4 years ago, is undoubtedly partly down to all his injury problems in recent years, with constant niggles. But he certainly seems to be a player now who seems like he's got no real motivation to give 110%. Apart from Houllier, Gabby's been a first choice. He hasn't had to fight for his place. If he does have to fight for his place this season (which I hope he does), he really has to work his bollocks off.

Pre-season he's just looked a bit lazy, heavy, worryingly slow (by his standards) and completely shot as a player at this level. It is only pre-season of course, but he seriously needs a rocket up his backside. A player who used to play like he was exploding with energy, and largely with a smile on his face, now plays looking like he's permanently sighing and that it's a chore. Maybe as a fan all the shit we've had to deal with over the last four years has got to him, but as a pro, he's seriously got to up his game now. He's in danger of heading down Lee Hendries path. Leaving us as a good player who never quite fulfilled his potential, and then just doesn't seem to have any desire left at the clubs he moves to. Inevitably ending up dropping down and then out of the pro-leagues.

Sort yourself out Gabby. I can't really defend him any more. As more and more posters call him uninterested and lazy, or shot at this level, he's showing nothing to suggest that isn't the case, and I now see the lazy side too unfortunately. I'd be taking any offers coming to us to be honest. Cash in while we can. He shouldn't get a new deal.

I'm starting to agree with that Tom and I too am a big fan of his purely due to him giving me some of the best memories in my Villa supporting lifeline...all the derby winners, winner at Old Trafford, second goal in our first win at Arsenal in 15 years.

So much good stuff there which is why I cut him some slack but how much of that is he capable of now? To me it's worrying as we need him to be a spark upfront with no Benteke around for the first few months.

Gabby with less pace will have little to offer at top level.

I've had my doubts about Gabby ever since the latter part of the Houllier season. After Bent got injured and we went to shit, Gabby plays up front as a proper striker and when we really needed him he contributed nothing. We see the occasional glimpse of the old Gabby but nowhere near enough over the last 4 years. In that time he has had 2 decent spells, first 3 months under McLeish, and 4 months at the end of the first Lambert season, not good enough imo over a 4 year period.

And considering most of us class Vlaar as injury prone then the same has to be said for Gabby as he has played 1 less league game than Vlaar over the last 2 years.

Frustrating as we saw in the first half at Liverpool last season what a difference Gabby on form makes to us, and how he can tear any opposition apart, he's now only doing it 2 or 3 times a season though.

Gabby should now be nothing more than an impact sub.

I did say that a few years ago about Gabby but just got stick from everyone, so live and learn kids 8)

Anyway, pretty crap match, our best spell was for about ten minutes following the goal, apart from that we were pretty useless and if they had a better delivery or more up front they could have won the game.  Also, the communtry was far worse than the other night.

Steer did what he had to do, and is one of the only ones who will really benefit from this trip.  Grealish again looked impressive, Senderoes not bad, and after that I am struggling.

I thought Weimann had a good first half, he was held back by nzog and gabby offering very little.

I'd happily play him against the top 6 teams at home who should all come and attack us. I'd also play him in away games. He's usually a passenger against anyone that sits back against us though.

Herd is not a centre half, not in a million years. As for midfield, i'd like to see Clark given a go in there.
When he was picked in midfield under AM people wanted him at the back. I agree though, he doesn't seem cut out for centre back.

I think that is a good assessment, Tom.

I think sadly we have reached that point.

I don't. I'm still fully behind Gabby and used right he is still an asset to us.

Alan Hutton with jet lag could be an interesting spectacle Wednesday night. Wouldn't want to be the winger going into any 50 : 50 's .

The last time I reckon we saw the best of Gabby was when he was played as the lone striker for a while under MON. He looked really good and it seemed to bring the best out of him.

He was excellent last few months of the first Lambert season. Finished with 9 goals and most of those came during that period.

Just did not kick on last season especially after a decent start.

yep, he was unplayable on the opening day against Arsenal, and did well in the next couple as well, but then he just fell apart and hasn't really shown any form since.
