How many of the 57 side are still with us?

Stan was typical black country, didn't suffer fools gladly. Lived in the Bilston area. Stan and Pat Saward were the best two players on the pitch in the 57 final.

Rest in Peace Stan.

Being part of the hastily put together Man U team after the Munich disaster, he played in both the 1957 and 1958 FA Cup finals.
RIP.

Sad news.

Didn't Stan go up to Man Utd after the Munich disaster to 'help them out'?

Edit ** Answered my question, Andy Lochead**

Read about Stan on the OS. The only player to have played in an FA Cup match when he was cup tied, and man of the match in the 1957 FA Cup final.

RIP

Years ago I think I read somewhere, written by I think that biased northern hack David Meek Stan described as: Black Country, foul mouthed and limited.  I thought then, and still do that Meek never got over the fact we beat his precious United in 1957 and that Stan had played in that match and he had difficulty in accepting that United had signed him.  That, and the possibility that Stan may have told him to fuck off.

Interesting, as I too have always found David Meek to be a condescending cnut.

Great player Sleep on Stan you will always be a Villa Hero. He is the player I talk about when Manchester United fans start walking like Robocop. Your team was decimated, wiped out by Munich but the other clubs allowed players to be sold to them (this was before Bosman remember) and it was widely known that Stan being a Black Country lad was very happy in the midlands but went nevertheless out of a collective sense of duty in football to di the right thing and help Manchester United. How football has changed. RIP Stan.

I wouldn't have thought that set him apart from any other Yanited fan?

RIP.

Stan didn't want to go to Man Utd. He wanted to stay at Villa. He was more or less forced to go by Eric Houghton (the Villa Manager) who thought it was the right thing to do after the Munich tragedy.Stan described the Villa in 1974 as "The greatest club in the country". Every day I walked down the drive I used to think to myself of the great players who had made the same journey over the years.

"It was a great privelege to to play for the Villa but I wish I had quit the game after the 1957 final."

"I didn't want to play for Manchester United"

An introverted  but great great Villa man.

RIP, I never saw you play and didn't know much about you until I read your obituaries. You were a true Villa man; humble yet proud and clearly worthy of the shirt.
