If we win today, Oz, you do realise you'll have to carry on deleting every match thread 25 mintes before kick off?

Not that I'm superstitious or anything. Oh, no.

Where's the bloody Orange Dot?

Aimless hoof from Baker, I'm not sure if his defensive contribution is strong enough to make up for his complete lack of composure on the ball.

This is the first game I've watched live for a long while (have to work Saturdays) - is this average or worse than normal?

This is mind-numbingly tedious. On the rare occasions every 5 minutes when we get possession, we look to go long. We play like Stoke under Pulis, except they were actually able to make it work, whereas we are too shite even to master crap, cynical football.

If anyone reading this is at the game, can they please try to start a chant of "You're just a shit Tony Pulis" in Lambert's general direction? Thanks.

I know a lot is not happening right now and he probably isn't everyone's favourite players but KEA does add a little bite and grit to the midfield.

I hate stats but don't they show with KEA we don't lose as many games?

He brings balance to the side. In the same way that a Lidl Bulgarian chardonnay brings balance to a frozen cheese pasty.

Albrighton put 3-4 really good crosses in, a striker in anything approaching decent form would've scored at least 1.  We've not been great but I don't think there was much between the sides, they keep the ball well but the final ball is still a 50/50 cross or lump over the top.  I'm also yet to see Anything from Luke Shaw to deserve the amount of attention he's had, if he wasn't so quick he'd not be close to good enough to be linked with the moves he has been, his technical ability is very average.

Make a change Lambert. Robinson for Gabby who's been shit.

I know it won't happen though until we're behind and even then it will be Holt.

One day, in the future, we'll take a quick throw in instead of letting the opposition compose themselves.

Free kick, Shaw in the book, and really, that should be his second yellow. Albrighton has done him a few times today.

the midweek changes weren't going to fix the various problems that we have but I honestly thought there would be come extra zip and especially against a side with nothing at all to play for. I really wanted Lambert to work out, but this is overall so desperate. Change might just be what everyone needs at the end of the season.

Fucks sake, no one attacking the crosses Albrighton is whipping in. Benteke would be having a field day today. If we're going for that type of game, why isn't Holt on?
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Southampton Match Thread

Really need to make a change or 2 up front, it's just not working at all, we're looking pretty good on the rest of the pitch but nothing is sticking and neither of them is doing enough to attack the ball in the box.  Robinson and Holt on for me.

Hard fought point. Stops the rot. We still look a very poor side though. Weimann and Gabby are a waste in the side at the moment. Rest them, let a couple of others have a go to freshen things.

Albrighton was superb today. Worked himself into the ground. Delivered a lot of good balls which sadly our goal shy forwards never looked like making the most of. He's more than earned himself a new deal and it'd be a disgrace not to give him one.

Vlaar was also superb at the back too. Bertrand as well. Bacuna disappointed me. Should have done more going forward.

I'm pretty concerned that we're showing very little fight. The introduction of Sid and Shay hasn't apparently put any fire in the players' bellies. We're in the shit still, and I can't believe we weren't going hammer and tongs when we kept finding so much joy down their left flank. That Shaw perhaps had an off day today, but Marc turned him inside out all game and he shouldn't have been on the pitch by the end. Why wasn't Holt on the pitch at this point?

We were awful but Lambert and Lallana were clearly minding themselves. Didnt stop us trying to hand them two penalties late on but think we dug out the point okish.

Thought Westwood and Delph were good in midfield. Vlaar and Bertrand good at the back. Albrighton tried hard but was up against an exceptional opponent. Guzan made some good saves. The rest verged between average and a disgrace (Weimann and Gabby).

I saw nothing about Shaw which was exceptional other than his pace, he got himself out of jail in defence a few times by being quick and everything he did going forward was him breaking on to a long ball into the corner and being too quick for Bacuna or Albrighton to catch him when he got a start on them.

He'll probably go on to be a very good player but, unless today was a massive off day, he's a long way from being one right now.  Clyne was far better on the other side.  The only 2 players they had that I thought looked genuinely top drawer were him and Lallana but the latter just couldn't quite open us up today, but it was pretty much only him trying.

Is this what "starting from scratch" looks like?

Albrighton for all his crosses never really put in a great ball, not there was much to aim at as we failed to get numbers in the box.
Delph plays far too deep, nobody supporting the strikers, not that there was any decent service to them.

Shame Robinson came on so late, he certainly added a bit of muched needed energy to the side.

Overall, 'meh'. What a wasted season.
