End of an era. See you at the Trinity Road gates for the penultimate time.

Maybe now H&V has gone digital there's a gap in the matchday market for a fanzine similar to this effort from the 60's...

I wonder if Dave is planning on moving into the half and half scarf business.

I wonder if PWS will be selling on the Expressway.

Reading the online version.
Well done, one and all.
Thanks, Dave.

£2 for the official match programme seems reasonable.
It is the programme right
-
You lot won't know what to do with yourselves pre match next season will you?
-
Give them all iPads then they can sell online subscriptions outside B6

Very good.

Always looked forward to H and V arriving in the post. The fact that it took a few days longer to get to Ireland actually seemed to make it all the more enjoyable when it finally arrived. Won't be the same reading it on Kindle but I suppose it's for the best. Thanks for giving me many many hours of happy reading and best of luck with the new direction.
-
Just as I was starting to get over the demise of The Argus.
-
As you've mentioned there will be special editions in hard copy?
-
As you've mentioned there will be special editions in hard copy?
Compilations twice a season.
-
The end of an era.
I remember the first ever issue I bought as a 10 year old had a picture of The queen presenting the FA Cup to Johnny Dixon on the cover with the speech bubbles 'Be seeing you soon your highness' and the queen replying 'I don't think so'.
It's our year for the cup next year, you heard it here first ;)
I also remember the seller telling me 'it's not the programme you know!' and me replying 'Oh yeah, I know that!'
Ahh, the memories, I shall buy the final print copy tomorrow with a heavy heart.
-
My brother brought the first ever one up at Crewe off DW back in the day. The print version shall be missed (wipes away tear and stares into the distance).
-
I'm still waiting for details of my redundancy package.
-
Being a boring old fart and technophobe tomorrow's will be the last one for me - I just like the physical medium of print on paper and can't get on with reading books etc on electronic devices. And besides anything else you can't fold a Kindle in your jeans back pocket during the match. Sad end of a long held match habit and looking forward to the bumper Christmas paper edition already
-
As you've mentioned there will be special editions in hard copy?
Compilations twice a season.
Hardback ?
-
Can I buy it as a one off special to be posted up north to Carlisle?
-
I would absolutely love the compilations to be in hardback!
-
Well done chaps. The link to B6 from here has been greatly improved by your magnificent work.
(And I must extend my thanks to those of you I met in the Bartons Arms)
-
I will really miss the H@V magazine, thank you to everyone who has put it together over the years and the match day sellers for giving up their time through wind, rain and occasionally sunshine, I will pick up my final copy at the Hull game, once again I thank you.

Indeed. Would expect nothing less from Christy Brown.

When was the first one? I seem to think I bought it at Forest opening day of 89/90, or am I miles out?

That was the one but we'd sold a few at Crewe the week before.

I bought one yesterday. Thought long and had about framing it & putting it on the wall but decided to leave it by the bog with all the other copies.

Dave. As Hull will be the last time we can purchase a copy at the ground will you be selling your copies outside the Trinity gates which if I remember correctly is where you started all those years ago.

No I will not. However, there may be a return of one or two of our former sellers.

Good news, although I suspect it's a cunning ploy as I will now feel obliged to buy another copy.

Entertaining as they are one copy is enough thanks!

I 'enjoyed' the article on the 2000 FA Cup final...in particular the 'please, please...' referring to Ugo rising to head the ball right at the end.
I remember that...
I hate football.

It really won't be the same walking up past the church without the H&V call to arms from both sides of the road, do I go left do I go right ? Now what ? Just the bible bashers trying to shackle you In

A seller by the Trinity got a mention in the Independent today - quoted as "it's a bit crap here". Legion?

Even better if we get the win against hull

Nothing wrong with your account. You can still log in and post.
-
Calm down calm down legion as mr carragher would say transfer my posts then from perry_ barr_pet then and I will be happy
Thank you so much
-
I can't do that. Why are you unable to log-in with your previous details?
-
Because I have got a message saying saying that after 2-3 years of posting that someone has popped up with the perry barr pet name and claimed it back so had a message from martin telling me to change my name.
My post was not meant to offend by the way
-
Sorry. I never knew that. No offence taken. I'm off to kick Martin's backside.
-
Forget it mate I just thought that the site would not let me use a name that was so cLose to another but in 2-3 years f posting I have never see a post from perry barr pet.
Class_ of _82 is mine now it was my sons but I have it now

Sobbing...........191 was a brilliant read of course, as they all were and remain so, and all to be cherished and, yes, the sellers will indeed be a lot warmer and drier, but why didn't we all chip in for a few parka's, umbrellas, purpose-built shelters etc.......more sobbing....... and kept the faith going longer? Too late now. Massive thanks to Dave and all of the sellers for all you've done over so many years! Suppose all great things have to come to an end sometime. Look forward to the new-life-on-line-versions. UTV, UH&V
-
Penultimate chance to say hello to us. And to give us £2 of your hard earned.
There's always the Big Issue.

191 was a worthy swansong. Like swallowing varnish. A lingering death but a lovely finish. I will have a sip to the memory.
-
As you've mentioned there will be special editions in hard copy?
Compilations twice a season.
Can we subscribe to those?

Sad to hear H&V will be no more. I haven't been to a game for a while now but I always looked forward to reading H&V on the train coming back down to London, as well as the Argus. All part of the matchday experience. Now, just like regular 3pm kick offs and an Aston Villa team that played entertaining attacking football and actually won more home games than they lost, they're now consigned to history. It's all very sad. RIP H&V. RIP football.
-
I'm looking forward to my last chance to shout... 'Theee Villa Fanzine!'
I got so cold selling on Trinity Road one night that my phone froze in my pocket and never worked again!
-
Really sad to hear this I always enjoyed reading H&V but have not gotten one for awhile which makes this all the more sad, will have to get my hands on this piece of history!
-

I've got two pieces in this edition.
It's not unlike when Woodward and Bernstein were filling the Washington Post during the unfolding of Watergate.
Well, it is, strictly speaking.

When you say pieces, are they along the lines of a 'report'?

When you say pieces, are they along the lines of a 'report'?
There is room for only one report writer in the world of Villa fans, HRH HH.

Travelling up for this game especially to buy my last H and V, outside the ground, in the form that I know it. Hope I will be able to get this souvenir edition signed by DW himself. I will buy two copies.
Slightly off topic. Not meeting family beforehand so might take MV junior into the Bartons for something to eat. Haven't been there for many years. Are they amenable you leaving cars in the car park during the game. And if so do you need to get there early.
-
No problem with parking there but it will be busy Saturday as the beer festival is on. If eating then I would suggest you book a table. And pop over and say hello!

Thanks for that. Only contemplating Burghers and Thai Fries. So wouldnt want to book a table. Can you eat in the bar?
-
You can but with match goers and beer festival visitors you will have to get there early to get a seat.
They aren't precious on turnaround times so booking a table is a good way of guaranteeing a perch until you leave for the match.

There will be a number of us there, especially after the match. I agree with cheltenhamlion that, with the beer festival, you'd be wise to book a table.

I'll be at the Trinity Road gates for around 1pm so come along to either say goodbye or just call me a tw*t. Or both.

No disrespect intended Lee but as I bought my first H&V from Dave all those years ago I fully intend to buy my last from him....and frame it!
-
I'll be Witton Lane as usual, opposite Dave. Last chance to come and say hello.
-
Im looking forward to selling, I havent shouted my mouth off selling for a good few years now!
I will be be the James Bond type! With the really loud voice

Well I'm going to really miss the paper edition.
There, I've said it.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to over the years.
-
So am I. I still don't want to go...
-
Anyway, time to man up, grow a pair and accept it. Hopefully see a few of you tomorrow.

Il try and venture around to you as well, but I'm taking my 6 year old lad tomorow so see if he can make it, as he's a slow walker

You've come a long way from being Leeg's security guard.

Looking forward to purchasing my last H @V, my all time favourite publication, will I be able to buy the previous edition guys?
-
Dave usually has a copy lurking, if it hasn't sold out.
-
A big thank you to everyone who has bought H&V from me in the time i've been selling. It's been a real pleasure meeting so many of you.
-
I've been buying H&V for the best part of 20 years and today thought it was going to be very appropriate that I buy the last edition from Dave W.
So as I approached him after the end of the game at his usual selling spot to buy one a grinning Dave said "Sorry, sold out ". At that point I looked down at the handful of copies he was carrying as he then tried to hide them behind his back whilst running off.
Nice one Dave. I won't be buying the digital edition.

You do realise they were back issues that Dave had left don't you. Every seller sold out, that's why we were stood by Dave.

Yes. I was stood there next to Dave when he sold his last issue. As was Legion. I saw the covers of the back issues he put away, I know the covers as the see the things for hours when selling. Now ask yourself, why the fuck would I lie about a £2 fanzine. And more importantly, if you know Dave, there is zero chance he'd turn down a sale. Every single seller, including Dave, sold out today.
-
Uh oh, an awkward erroneous huff moment.
-
Bye everybody, I had a great 24 years serving you all.
-
Testimonial?
-
After the game I had some shop returns. I brought them down to my usual after-match selling place together with some of the last issue which I had left over. I sold them and apologised to two people who came up to me just after. I assume one of them was you.
-
All we had left was some back copies, we sold all the copies of the last issue we had
-
Bye everybody, I had a great 24 years serving you all.
I'll never bump into you again. No more going to the Ads after a game or having you denying me three times before a game because you had no fucking clue who I was...no, I won't let it go...
-
Anyway, time to man up, grow a pair and accept it. Hopefully see a few of you tomorrow.
Didn't even stick around long enough to see his regulars.
I guess he Leeg too tired and emotional after selling his last copy.
-
It was a pleasure to meet Legion for the first time today, and knowing he's going to miss his job as a fanzine seller, I thought I'd give him one last chance to utter a stock phrase.
As I approached and was within earshot, I turned round to my boy and said "Wait here, Daddy's just going to get a programme".
-
I'd planned to catch up with folk today and got stuck in traffic, arrived a few minutes before kick off and there was nobody left!
Nice one folks.
-
Bye everybody, I had a great 24 years serving you all.
Sorry you weren't there today, Percy. Hope your lad passed our message on to you.

Didnt see you today Percy so bought from big Lee but 99% of the time I have bought from you, thank you Percy for your dedication to the cause.
-
Nice to meet you, LeeB.
We sold out of the latest issue well before kick-off and only had back-issues left.
Thank you to everyone who has made the last few years such an enjoyable experience.
-
Aye, I was only a part-timer but it was a pleasure (even in the inevitable rain) to flog such an esteemed organ to the masses.
I'll subscribe to the on line version though, if only so I can slag off Stu Griffin for his rubbish articles.

Anyway, had a great time at the Ads, all the best mate.

Thanks. Steve, it was a pleasure. I've always said that the fanzine-buying Villa public are lovely, pleasant, well -mannered people. Pure class, like their club.
-
Really pleased that my final ever sale went to CT (Lee) of this parish.
-
I'd like to say the great John Russell's signing off line in his final piece is majestic.
-
Disappointed not to get a last copy but understand why they sold out...all the best guys, and maybe once in a while just stand around shouting 'Heroes and Villains!!'
-
Some memories of my time selling...
Selling a few copied to Nigel Kennedy
Selling outside the old Trinity Road stand on an evening game looking up at the steps as the light from te floodlights gave the entrance a religious 'gods in the house' sort of feel
Selling about 40 copies in one go to a load of Japanease
Hearing..."Them all bloody Villains!" after a defeat. "Where's the Holte End, its been a while since I was last down!" [usually against one of the glory hunting teams], and of couse "Is it the programme!" more times then I can remember
Rain, Wind, snow, and feezing temperatures!
-
I have a Kindle paperwhite and a Samsung android tablet, will either of those devices be able to download the online version of H@V?
-

I'm sure we'll have a follow up sometime.

Nice words about it by Pat Murphy on Twitter this morning.
-
I know he gets stick on here, but i've always liked him, been listening to him talk about us since I was a kid in the 80s. When he moans about things at VP I think its because he genuinely cares about the club.
-
Pat's Tweet: Very sad that issue 191 of 'Heroes & Villians' is the last paper copy. It's been a must for discerning, yet loyal @AVFCOfficial fans for yrs

We should have a fundraiser for a statue of Dave W erected in his old spot on witton lane for posterity
Standing there with his familiar lugubrious expression holding a few H&V's in his arm along with the inscription
'no it's not the programme'
If definitely throw in for that

Just came onto the site for the first time in MONTHS to see what the latest on PL and the takeover was and instead I stumbled across this way more important thread. Say it ain't so?!
I ended up in the same train carriage to Wigan as Mr Woodhall on the last day of last season, a wonderful occasion that saw me buying what has turned out to be my last copy of H&V and also being bought a drink (yes, an alcoholic one and a whole pint too) by the man himself.
I missed the opportunity to get him a drink back, as someone else had just got a round in before I headed off to the ground, but he told me I could just start buying a subscription or two (I think I had 3 or 4 for various people at one time) this season. Sadly, it was something I was just too damn lazy to ever getting round to do, but by happy coincidence, I did bump into Dave in The White Horse in Harborne a few months ago and was able to return the compliment by buying him and his young compadre a pint of ale each!
I kept meaning to do so and having made it to the Hull game last weekend, meant to grab a copy of the latest H&V as I arrived, but didn't, thinking I'd back-order the entire season once safety was secured. Well, I guess I probably still could, but that it will be missing the final issue. Any plans for a re-print?!
