Maybe now H&V has gone digital there's a gap in the matchday market for a fanzine similar to this effort from the 60's...

As we turn the last page,
Please let us not forget,
Those hardy souls of Hand V
That stood out in the wet.

With frantic cries to come and buy
This morsel of English Lit.,
An A5 compendium of Villainy
Wrapped up in honest wit.

The Legion of honest brokers
Who welcomed supporters true
Are now released to pasture
In fields of Claret and Blue.

£2 for the official match programme seems reasonable.

Always looked forward to H and V arriving in the post. The fact that it took a few days longer to get to Ireland actually seemed to make it all the more enjoyable when it finally arrived. Won't be the same reading it on Kindle but I suppose it's for the best. Thanks for giving me many many hours of happy reading and best of luck with the new direction.

The end of an era.

I remember the first ever issue I bought as a 10 year old had a picture of The queen presenting the FA Cup to Johnny Dixon on the cover with the speech bubbles 'Be seeing you soon your highness' and the queen replying 'I don't think so'.

It's our year for the cup next year, you heard it here first  ;)

I also remember the seller telling me 'it's not the programme you know!' and me replying 'Oh yeah, I know that!'

Ahh, the memories, I shall buy the final print copy tomorrow with a heavy heart.

Being a boring old fart and technophobe tomorrow's will be the last one for me - I just like the physical medium of print on paper and can't get on with reading books etc on electronic devices. And besides anything else you can't fold a Kindle in your jeans back pocket during the match. Sad end of a long held match habit and looking forward to the bumper Christmas paper edition already

Sobbing...........191 was a brilliant read of course, as they all were and remain so, and all to be cherished and, yes, the sellers will indeed be a lot warmer and drier, but why didn't we all chip in for a few parka's, umbrellas, purpose-built shelters etc.......more sobbing....... and kept the faith going longer? Too late now. Massive thanks to Dave and all of the sellers for all you've done over so many years! Suppose all great things have to come to an end sometime. Look forward to the new-life-on-line-versions. UTV, UH&V

Sad to hear H&V will be no more. I haven't been to a game for a while now but I always looked forward to reading H&V on the train coming back down to London, as well as the Argus. All part of the matchday experience. Now, just like regular 3pm kick offs and an Aston Villa team that played entertaining attacking football and actually won more home games than they lost, they're now consigned to history. It's all very sad. RIP H&V. RIP football.

Travelling up for this game especially to buy my last H and V, outside the ground, in the form that I know it. Hope I will be able to get this souvenir edition signed by DW himself. I will buy two copies.

Slightly off topic. Not meeting family beforehand so might take MV junior into the Bartons for something to eat. Haven't been there for many years. Are they amenable you leaving cars in the car park during the game. And if so do you need to get there early.

They aren't precious on turnaround times so booking a table is a good way of guaranteeing a perch until you leave for the match.

Tomorrow will be your last opportunity to buy a proper H&V at Villa Park. We've even got old sellers returning.

Never been a fan of acts reforming.

I won't be there, which makes me Weller. Mac and Mark M are 'From The Jam'.

You've moved on Percy, they are just trading on past glories.

I've been buying H&V for the best part of 20 years and today thought it was going to be very appropriate that I buy the last edition from Dave W.

So as I approached him after the end of the game at his usual selling spot to buy one a grinning Dave said "Sorry, sold out ". At that point I looked down at the handful of copies he was carrying as he then tried to hide them behind his back whilst running off.

Nice one Dave. I won't be buying the digital edition.

You do realise they were back issues that Dave had left don't you. Every seller sold out, that's why we were stood by Dave.

Yes. I was stood there next to Dave when he sold his last issue. As was Legion.  I saw the covers of the back issues he put away, I know the covers as the see the things for hours when selling. Now ask yourself, why the fuck would I lie about a £2 fanzine. And more importantly, if you know Dave, there is zero chance he'd turn down a sale. Every single seller, including Dave, sold out today.

After the game I had some shop returns. I brought them down to my usual after-match selling place together with some of the last issue which I had left over. I sold them and apologised to two people who came up to me just after. I assume one of them was you.

It was a pleasure to meet Legion for the first time today, and knowing he's going to miss his job as a fanzine seller, I thought I'd give him one last chance to utter a stock phrase.

As I approached and was within earshot, I turned round to my boy and said "Wait here, Daddy's just going to get a programme".

Some memories of my time selling...

Selling a few copied to Nigel Kennedy
Selling outside the old Trinity Road stand on an evening game looking up at the steps as the light from te floodlights gave the entrance a religious 'gods in the house' sort of feel
Selling about 40 copies in one go to a load of Japanease
Hearing..."Them all bloody Villains!" after a defeat. "Where's the Holte End, its been a while since I was last down!" [usually against one of the glory hunting teams], and of couse "Is it the programme!" more times then I can remember
Rain, Wind, snow, and feezing temperatures!

We should have a fundraiser for a statue of Dave W erected in his old spot on witton lane for posterity
Standing there with his familiar lugubrious expression  holding a few H&V's in his arm along with the inscription
 'no it's not the programme'

If definitely throw in for that

Just came onto the site for the first time in MONTHS to see what the latest on PL and the takeover was and instead I stumbled across this way more important thread. Say it ain't so?!

I ended up in the same train carriage to Wigan as Mr Woodhall on the last day of last season, a wonderful occasion that saw me buying what has turned out to be my last copy of H&V and also being bought a drink (yes, an alcoholic one and a whole pint too) by the man himself.

I missed the opportunity to get him a drink back, as someone else had just got a round in before I headed off to the ground, but he told me I could just start buying a subscription or two (I think I had 3 or 4 for various people at one time) this season. Sadly, it was something I was just too damn lazy to ever getting round to do, but by happy coincidence, I did bump into Dave in The White Horse in Harborne a few months ago and was able to return the compliment by buying him and his young compadre a pint of ale each!

I kept meaning to do so and having made it to the Hull game last weekend, meant to grab a copy of the latest H&V as I arrived, but didn't, thinking I'd back-order the entire season once safety was secured. Well, I guess I probably still could, but that it will be missing the final issue. Any plans for a re-print?!
