Title: Aston Villa v Southampton Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Tugby Villain on April 16, 2014, 04:44:34 PM
Saturday 19.4.14 3.00pm KO at Villa Park.

Will the shake-up in the backroom staff have a positive impact on the result?

Neck on the block - we're going to win this. The players will feel liberated and motivated, while Southampton are on the beach. Also, they're the kind of team we do well against as they push up a lot and leave plenty of space to break into. I think we'll get the safety win.

Law of averages suggests we can't keep losing and in particular losing at home. We will get something from this one. The squad will be perkier, the fans have been given a lift for a game a lot of us were probably dreading so the atmosphere should be improved.

Southampton are not on a brilliant run of form and have little to play for other than pride.

We'll win this one. Believe!!

I can see us coming right out, playing fast attacking football and properly taking the game to win. Have a feeling we'll win this one well.

3-0, Weimann, Delph, and Gabby to score.

Draw.

They're already on holiday, some of their players may not be fully focused with half an eye on the World Cup.  That said, we are atrocious.

Would love to get them back for that dive at VP last season though, even if we've already beaten them since.

An improved performance but 1-2 Southampton I fear.

I do think now we'll take 4 points from Swansea and Hull games which will be enough though.

2-2

Last minute equaliser from Gabby who promptly tells the Holte to tell Culverhouse to shut the fuck up and fuck off.

Lambert to provide much-needed midfield steel.

In fact, bloody hell, think how good that midfield would be. Lambert and Cowans. Sure beats the one on the pitch.

Scoring goals will be a problem again, (said in anticipation of hopefully being proved totally wrong).
And FFS play with some width. We are not going to break them down through the middle and if they get at our right-back, (whoever it may be) we are in shit street.
Just hoping that the backroom shenanigans will instill some fight, determination and resilience - sadly lacking so often this season.
1-1

A little off topic, but I’ve just had a hugely positive experience that I thought I’d share with you all.

I have two friends from Japan coming to Villa Park for the first time this weekend, a visit which they have been eagerly anticipating for almost 5 years. A few weeks back I called the club to see if there’s anything they might be able to do to help me to honour the occasion. After taking my details they responded this afternoon saying that there were ‘2 home shirts with my friend's names printed on, awaiting them at the club shop on Saturday’. Call me sentimental but I genuinely had tears in my eyes. We really do support the best football club in the world.

That does mean one less player we can buy in the summer though because of the cost of those shirts! ;)

The manner of releasing them perhaps, but I don't think the mood is put on. I don't think there's much performing for the camera going on, it seems more genuine (unless they're all bloody good actors). It would seem Culverhouse and Karsa were two rotten apples.

Of course whether this makes a blind bit of difference on results remains to be seen.

I bet the marketing dept wet their pants when they saw your request come in, an opportunity to market the club in Asia is the holy grail of all football club marketeers. Good work HertsVilla, you pressed the right button there. If you'd have told them your mates were coming over from Honduras or some such they'd have told you to f#*k off!

Coaching Matt and Marc. Surely we are not about to see a real right back playing with a real right winger, as in real football tactics playing to your strengths..?

I would 100% take a draw. I think two points more would most likely do it.

But I think this has 2-0 Southampton written all over it

I'd be really happy to take the draw. Might be a really useful point and to stop the rot. I cannot see Villa losing five on the bounce. However, if we do, I would like to see Lambert sent the same way as the other two clowns.
Too late for that now. Sacking a manager with 4 games to go ?

I believe... with the introduction of SAS this week to the coaching staff, the place around AVFC is a much more happier & positive place... The cloud hanging over Villa Park will finally be lifted on Saturday. We now need to play our part (not that we haven't!)  by roaring the lads on to 3 points.

There is a renewed optimism and hopefully it will help especially if the lads go out with some semblance of passable tactics instilled in them. I don't think it will hide the fact that the overall quality of the squad is very poor indeed. Let's get over this finish line and start sorting this crap out.

Think I'd play the 433 with albrighton instead of Weimann. Though we could perhaps drop holt and play gabby up top?

I wouldnt like to call this one either way. A lot depends on Gabby putting on his occasional top rate performance which may swing things our way.

I'd go with a 4-4-2 (ish) formation with Gabby & Weimann up top. Holt can sit back on the bench. Albrighton to start too

Have just taken 6/4 about a villa win...draw no bet...not too worried about the bet but hope we avoid a defeat for one big reason..SID. .! The club is a shambles top to bottom and none of this is Sid ' doing..The man is a villa legend and if it does go all tits up this season I don't want Sid to be tarnished with any of the fallout...Ffs Villa batter the saints tomorrow.

This is it for me to. You'd like to think if Gabby was one of the ones who didn't have a particularly good relationship with Culverhouse, that his mood will now be a lot brighter. The last month Gabby's form has been very poor, but he's not put the yards in either. He cut a very frustrated figure on the pitch.
I'm hoping this is going to be one of those games where he's got a rocket up the backside and will drag us through. On his day he'd unplayable. Those days become increasingly rare, but they do still happen and hopefully tomorrow is one of those days.

4-1 it is.

Kind of hoping the Southampton manager and some of their star players are already planning their summer activities. They have had some strange results lately which suggests a lack of focus. Though they have players that could walk through us at will if we turn up like we did for any of the last few games. I think after the antics last week it will be a fired up Villa team from the start so should be a good game. Steven Davis is one MON erred in letting go imo, he played outstanding against us in the away game. He will need watching.

Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Bertrand, Bacuna, Westwood, Delph, Albrighton, Holt, Gabby. 44facking2  Not sure if we even have other options - Baker, Bennett, KEA, Weimann, Tonev, Bowery - yikes

1-0 to the Villa. Holt with a late winner

I hope people don't think this is a must win game, cod I really would be surprised if we win!

Also interesting to note that I think we'd all agree they are a much better team than us at the moment. They have spent big on a handful of players but actually Ramirez, Wanyama and that Italian fwd back at juve haven't really been keen players. Otherwise their team is made up of "a bunch of lower league players, youth team graduates and cheap signings". It's the model that we've been most obviously trying to follow and they've shown it can work.  The main differences are

- they've obviously got a much better youth set up for one reason or another
- they've managed to start the journey in the reduced pressure of the lower leagues
- they've crucially managed to get in better creative players. We don't really have one who's done it, they've got lallana, shneiderlin, Ramirez, even lambert and Rodriguez

I think they've done a brilliant job and hope they manage to keep onto their best players for a bit longer.

For all the criticism of the board and the PR side, they could well have played an absolute blinder this week.
They've refreshed the coaching staff without spending a penny, they've kept their options open on the manager himself and this takeover talk hitting the papers, which may or may not have eminated from within the club, will ensure the fans will be ramped up for this game.

When I filled out my soccer 6 predictions last Monday I put us down for a loss.

I've just changed it to a 2-0 win.

I feel more optimistic this morning than I have for ages on a match day.  For some reason I think Southampton will be slow to start and Villa will just click, racing into a 2 nil lead in the first half and both teams cancelling each other out in a goalless  second half.

Please Villa, don't put in another turgid performance.

If we can't tank them, then the second nicest way to win this would be 1-0 with the most blatantly unjust penalty since the one they were awarded at Villa Park last year.

Best side available probably. The fantasist in me wanted Robinson and Helenius to play. Hopefully Robinson will get some game time in this. We do need a fresh injection somewhere. I'm hoping Gabby's got a spring in his step, and hopefully Weimann is played through the middle, and he'll get the chance to play his natural game.

That said, the Soton side is a lot better. Hopefully they're (forum cliché alert) on the beach already though
