Title: Important announcement
Post by: dave.woodhall on February 04, 2014, 11:57:42 AM
There's a new H&V out on Saturday. Make the most of it, as it's almost certain that the paper version will be ending this season.

From August we'll be transferring to digital-only, and staying dry in the process. This means more issues per season, more pages per issue and more up to date as we don't have to work round fixtures. The price will be around the same as VAT now has to be added and set-up costs are comparatively high for short runs such as ours - Private Eye, we ain't. We're looking at the idea of doing two Best Ofs every season as paper versions on sale at the ground for anyone who hasn't got digital access but more news on them nearer the time.

We'll be in touch with existing subscribers towards the end of the season to see how they want to continue.

Redundancy packages are being negotiated with sellers and if you've not seen it, here's where you can get the app https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/heroes-villains-villa-fanzine/id626720195?mt=8

Even if I wasn't a seller I'd agree with SH. For as long as I can remember the shouts of sellers are synonymous with a match day. And the amount of comments from folks walking by in my short time selling confirm a lot of supporters are the same.

Sadly a sign of the times, I used to love the sports argus  and h&v to read on a Saturday night after the match - but it is a very easy  process online and downloads in less than a minute.

No more

"Is it the programme"

"Them all bloody Villains"

"Where is the Holtey End" Usually against Man Ure or other glory hunting team [they actually said Holtey End!] My reply is usually along the line of "Same place is was againt Hull"

"Where is the North End" to which the answer was always "Preston"

After a purchase: "This isn't the programme!" answer: "I never said it was"

"Who's playing today?" Like the manager calls me in advance to let me know

Glory hunter: "whats that?"
Me: "A fanzine"
Glory Hunter: "Whats that?"
Me: "Its like a programme just better"
Glory Hunter: "So its the programme?"
Me "Thats £2 please"
Glory Hunter: "Thats cheap for a programme"

Like the Sports Argus, Heroes and Villains fanzine was a great thing to bring back from the match. I like tactile things which you don't need a plug for, I will always buy books not kindles. So, like may here will be upset to see the fanzine go.

Huge shame, to be honest I think you'll see a large decline in readers, I mainly buy the paper version as something to read at half time and to have handy by the toilet for when I'm stuck in there for a while.

I get that it's a pain in the arse to stand outside selling though, so fair play and good luck to you.

Been feeling a bit melancholy since, like Paul Ince, I was sacked by text earlier today. 23 years unbroken service, and I always enjoyed the feeling I was working for my beloved club in an indirect way.

Started during the reign of Doctor Jo, and I've loved almost every minute, weather aside. Resisted the overtures of friends many times to fake a mugging or change moody twenty pound notes, and never ripped Dave off for a penny (like he wouldn't have noticed).

Made lots of new friends, and saw old ones a lot more than I otherwise would have. VCTM, vespavillan, D.boy, john boy, peter w, Peter Withe, Peter Withe's shin, Kevin Dawson, fred m and his lovely wife Elaine, Dorset Villain, and loads more who's names I've forgotten at present or never knew. But to all my customers and those who just stopped for a chat, thanks for your time, company and money.

Best of all, while selling on Trinity Road, I met the beautiful Kerri, who went on to become my wife and the mother of two of my children. Then there's another two who got a bit of work experience by becoming my colleagues on the streets of Aston.

And contrary to popular belief, Dave is a great gaffer and a true friend.

Somebody will have to inform WMP that I'm not so busy before the match now.

Cheers everyone. It's been emotional.

Sacked by text AND pimps his son into the business. Are you sure you actually aren't Paul Ince?

When I was selling one of my regular customers bought my new born son his first ever Villa kit

When he had heard my son had been born he wondered over to me and gave it to me [he had just bought it from the club shop], didnt ask for a penny for it

Apart form the cold and wet, I loved selling H&V

In front of the old Trinity Road stand on an evening match was something special.

I can only echo what Percy said. I've met some great friends, even more great people, had some amazing times and been absolutely staggered by the loyalty and goodwill I've received. I've called in more favours than I've had the right to enjoy, had incredible responses and been genuinely touched so many times. But all good things come to an end and after 25 years it's time to do something new. We're not going away, we're just moving in a different direction and to re-iterate, there will probably be a couple of 'proper' round-ups of what's online each season.

If this was an episode of Eastenders it would end with the piano version of the theme tune rather that the standard one.

A bit sad to see the paper version go. When I first started going down the Villa my old man always would buy a heroes and villains and anything else going, be it a witton wisdom or a missing Sid. If we ever missed an issue there was some magazine shop in town, where the Tony Hancock sculpture is now that would stock back issues, only a few mind.

We'd love reading the letters part as back then there obviouly was no internet and forums so it was left to letters pages and chats in the pub to run the rule over Villa matters.

Anyway, thanks Dave and anyone down the years who have put the time and effort in making the fanzine because they have been and still are bloody brilliant.

Shame to hear this, while the last few years my match attendances have gone down, it was always part of the prematch ritual, walk to the ground from either where the car was parked or train station, go to the burger van on the left hand side of the road as you approach the overpass and see the magnificent Holte, eat burger, fumble for change to buy H&V off nearest sellar who would normally be just pass the badge people on the left hand side, buy programme, fumble for ticket to get through the stiles, take seat and read H&V before the match, at half time and then finish reading on the way home. I guess I can order online now but did like to buy in person but thank you sellars for providing such a wonderful peace of reading and hopefully long may it continue for another 20 odd years.

Terrace standing, tobacco smoke, local players, constant singing, nearby pubs and the cry of "Heroes N Villains The Villa Fanzine". And some hope of winning a trophy. Not long until they ban the cooking of onions along the walk to the stadium and then there will be no atmosphere at all.

Dave can fuck right off. His offer of a free online version counts for shite. I am phobic at tehcnology.

One free, on an iPad id so not own? He can kiss my arse.

And bollocks to the the people selling it. Ooooh, stand in the cold but make 80 quid from a new edition when you wrote fucking none of it.

You can all suck my Cheesy Great Hampton and stop feeling sorry for yourselves, you workshy ******!

This post was brought to you in association with four pints, a very long call with the editor last night when he asked for even more articles, and I missed the Beeb programme on World War 1 whilst he took the piss about Chelsea's lack of possession.

Well, no more. Balls to you all. I am taking this up as a profession rather than freebies round here.

Gags aside, I am available for various paper copies we have left, and from years ago, in the Bartons from Saturday until season end.

And we have some book ideas. And we can't do those on the net...

I imagine it will be strange for the long-serving stalwarts like Dave, Percy (and Mac, wherever he is these days) to have their match ritual completely changed forever but I'm sure it will also mean life being a bit less of a pain in the arse.

Maybe it's a good opportunity to digitise the back-issues or some sort of project where old and new can be found easily in one place. Not sure how prohibitive the cost and time would be on that but it would help maintain the legend of selling H&V for twenty five years and counting.

Boooo! Being a boring old fart I like the physical medium of paper rather than electronic versions of reading material. Could never read a book on Kindle or similar - just doesn't feel right. And, as others have said, the shouts of 'Heroes & Villains The Villa Fanzine Brand New Issue' will be missed on match days. End of an era but sign of the times

I'm gutted to be honest, it's part of the matchday experience for me and I enjoy reading the paper version. I'll certainly be sad to see it go.

As an aside I'm even more determined now to get editions 99 and 127 to complete my collection so if anyone has either...

I have loads in my collection from the start in the shed - I will have a look for you tonight.

For other people who have kindly helped my try to complete the set I have donated a few quid to Acorns during my next visit to VP on their behalf, I'd be happy to do the same for your good self :-)

Shame - I always look forward to reading it on the train on the way home but, as PL would say, we go again and I'm sure I'll enjoy the digital version.

The paper version of H&V has been a great Villa institution. Thanks to Dave and all the writers and sellers over the past quarter of a century.

Really sad to see the paper version of H & V ending. Kept me smiling and entertained when the match didn't!!

Wish i had kept all my copies now instead of giving them away a few weeks ago as undoubtedly these will all become collectors items and as valuable as

I daresay i'll get used to the digital version....after all i spend enough time on here i'm sure i will find time to read it.

Talking of the Bartons it's a Saturday 3pm kick-off! Feels like ages since I've been there (no point going on a weekday as it shuts at about 10.30pm).

Should be popping in post-game on Saturday after my travels to some obscure footballing outpost somewhere.

Unless there's a free Wet Spam ticket going, don't want to break my longstanding record of not paying to watch Villa!

Through both this forum and H&V I have met some nice guys - Percy and Dave included.
I will miss the banter and chats I have held with you and Dave - both at home and away.
Likewise I am retiring the season ticket at the end of the season and my trips to B6 and elsewhere will be curtailed - I`ve really fallen out of love with the game, rather than the Villa.
Hopefully our paths will cross in the future.
Thanks to Dave for publishing some of my ramblings, rants and features about my lad - VCTM jnr - he sends his regards too
All the very best guys !! Cheers VCTM

That's a shame, in the mobile/tablet market Android made up 81% of shipped devices in Q3 2013.  That figure will include the Kindle Fire but I'd be willing to bet it's a tiny proportion of it.  I'd guess it's not just me that'll find this transition difficult.

My thanks to all the sellers particularly Lord Woodhall, who over the years introduced me and the good lady to Messrs Bremner and Mortimer, (the good lady couldn't stop laughing at an old git being completely starstruck), whilst selling me the fanzine ( and various books for Christmas!) - it was always a pleasure to "shoot the breeze".

The price will be around the same as VAT now has to be added and set-up costs are comparatively high for short runs such as ours - Private Eye, we ain't.

Blame the accountant in me for this but do you really trigger the VAT threshold?  You'd need to sell more than 39,500 copies a year to do so - I don't want you giving the government 40p a copy unneccesarily (although this may result in you being labelled a despicable tax avoider on here!).

Never talk to Dave about who subscribes or how many he sells. After he announced the digital only thing to me with a call on Monday, where he demanded more copy incidentally, I floated the idea of my getting twenty quid an issue to churn the stuff out.

I would have thought that there will be a ready made niche market for some young entrepreneur to launch Villains and Heroes in traditional fanzine form.

I wrote and illustrated a prototype Villa fanzine donkey's years ago - pre H and V - I called it "Holteite".   I must have it in one of my lofts being used as nesting material by squirrels I expect.   Same box as my thesis on Gaudi and my unfinished novel about a tribe of duck worshippers called "Earthquack".

Spurs for definite. I know because I sold a few to their fans who said they missed paper copies of their fanzine. Stoke on the other hand do a new paper issue for every home game.

There was one edition from many many moons ago - 20 years ago in fact.

It must have been the edition the time the Holte was being dismantled and my mate and I are two many fans pictured on the front cover - any chance this can be posted from the vaults?

Anyway, now that I'm slowly coming to terms with Dave's decision:

Quote
H&V as a printed fanzine will cease to exist at the end of the season. Digital only for the future apart from a couple of compendiums from time to time. To say I am gutted is an understatement. Through selling outside the ground I have met and talked to so many wonderful people and had a lot of fun for the majority of the time. I will miss my regulars, all of whom have been really good to me for various reasons. Thanks for giving me the opportunity, Dave. I will miss selling but I understand your reasons behind this.

I helped Dave sell for a few minutes when we were chatting before the Arsenal game when Dr Jo was manager. I think that got me the gig for the next game, would have been around Christmas '90 I guess. The days of cheap tickets courtesy of borrowed Dole cards.

The tree with a bloke under it who's yelling "Heroes and Villains...... new issue out today".

NB - The tree may also have a dangerous looking branch that might be about to fall on the seller's head.

NB2 - There may also be a Police riot van reversing towards the seller ("Police Riot Van Reverser" is the difficult second album follow up to "African Car Reverser")

I only ever see Percy, his lad (who I always buy from), and the fella on the Holte End gates (Steve is it?) as I walk from the car to the Holte End. Oh I generally see Dave after the game too standing next to the bus stop outside the church.

I might do a lap of the ground today so that I can put a face to the name of all the sellers before they disappear into the crowd forever.

Could we have a weekly bio of each seller - name, selling location, most annoying away fan, most ridiculous question, etc, etc?

Being in the antipodes means I don't get down to the Villa often (and by often, I mean I've been 4 times in my life).  The way I've stayed connected to Villa was through HnV.  The first time I was I was able to go to a game was vs Man City in Dec, 2006, and one of the priorities for me on the day was to buy a copy of the fanzine.  Just so happened that I bought it from you Percy.

I had a manager keep me behind for an hour after work once looking for a pound coin I had dropped. Couldn't find it despite having the carpet up at one point. If I had had any coins in my pocket I would happily have dropped one and 'found' it but I didn't. Does Dave have a brother?

TUPE - transferring unwanted people elsewhere.

Now, this might not work because it's brand new and untried technology and in the hands of an idiot (me) but we're hoping on Saturday to have another technological breakthrough whereby it will be possible to access the H&V digital app free within the vicinity of Villa Park. More news when I understand it.

No. It'll be the immediate, ie close to, the ground.

As Somniloquism says, it's difficult even to send a text on a match day, let alone access the web

I can normally get on the web outside the ground well enough to provide the team news to PWS and Legion.

No chance of web access during the game.

I asked Villa Hospitality if free or nominal charge wi-fi could be provided in communal areas and pre match rooms like the Holte Suite. I was told that this was not possible because of the potential demand and the possible interference with turnstile technology. As I am a computer dolt of the first kind I didn't question this although I did wonder why airports can provide such a facility without too much hassle.

Didn't the club make some announcement at the start of the season about 4G being installed at villa park to improve coverage?

New technology at VP was tested for the Chavski match. If anyone noticed, they had perfect internet connection etc that day. I know I did. When it will be rolled out permanently I don't know.

I'll miss it but the print was getting a bit too small to read, at least with the online version, I will be able to make the print readable

I only bring your comment forward because I agree, but as far as turnstile technology using wireless connectivity as a reason, I think the twonk that told you that was giving you BS, when you go in Saturday look at all the wires leading from the turnstile terminals.

I'm not usually one for nostalgia, but I will definitely miss picking up a copy when at Villa Park. I remember buying my first H&V and laughing my arse off, and feeling slightly rebellious that I was reading something that was not The Official Line. For the first time I realised that it was ok to be pissed off with your club and that thousands of others were. It has been wonderfully both informative and subversive and long may it continue

I have a few copies of H&V lying around, always a great read. Does anybody here remember THE VILLA BUGLE, or was anyone reading this involved in it?

Going back about 18 years now, this was in suburban Melbourne, a mate of mine lived next door to an abandoned house that was still in good nick but it was messy with a few belongings left behind. It must've had some English backpackers in it before they'd pissed off or the lease ran out. Imagine my surprise to find a copy of The Villa Bugle (The back had a photo of Bluenose 'Paul Twat' holding aloft the Auto Windscreens shield with Mickey Mouse's face imposed onto it ie. Mickey Mouse trophy). This was when the internet was still in it's infancy and information was nowhere near as rife and as easily obtainable as it is now, being abroad back then you had to scrounge for info on the Villa. There was also an Evening Mail guide to all the midlands squads.
