Title: Wearing Villa shirts out
Post by: SW9-VILLA on January 29, 2014, 10:43:11 PM
You ever wear a footy shirt when you're not at a game etc?

Only really wear them lounging around the house or maybe if I'm down the park in the summer. However I wore a 94/95 home shirt to Glastonbury this year and people were either shaking my hand, complimenting me on the shirt or having lengthy discussions about footy.

Any good/bad/middling experiences from wearing colours in public?

Yes. It should be illegal.

I had a darts night tonight. I also have a long standing tradition of wearing a Villa shirt when we play. I was resplendent at darts night bedecked in claret & blue.

Only ever wear the current one for games, at the end of every season it becomes another shirt to wear to the gym. Considering wearing my Weimann shirt to my lecture tomorrow though.

I used to sometimes, apart from coat and occasionally the '82 trackie top I don't wear Villa stuff out on non matchdays these days.

I wore mine to the SCG. Immediately met another Villa fan from Sutton Coldfield, then a Sheffield United fan who thanked me (us) for not turning up the previous day, then an Albion fan who wanted to take a photo of me with his Albion flag.
I told him I didn't mind having a photo taken with an Albion fan, but I would not be touching his flag.

Last time I wore one as a fashion item was my 83 Champions of Europe top on the anniversary of Rotterdam in 2011. I was in Berlin at the time. It was the same night Barcelona ripped the arse out of Man Yoo at Wembley. That was an ace night.

Never owned a villa shirt since I was about 15. Would feel uncomfortable wearing one aged 48

I think they're an absolutely brilliant thing, one of the top aspects of modern thing. It just seems to symbolise a unity between the team and the fans, and particularly in summer, look ace as the ground is literally a sea of claret and Blue.

This picture comes to mind as an example, I'm not sure it'd be such an iconic image without all the fat blokes wearing the Macron.

Agree a great image. The look of sheer pleasure on the faces of the fans is what makes the picture so special n my view. Not sure the villa shirts adds anything

Would add that im not in the picture but my face was similarly ecstatic when AW scores

Wore my Champions of Europe shirt tonight.
But it was as a second layer of four!
(Top layer - a Villa winter coat - £5 from the end of season sale.)
Bargain!
At my age I ain't gonna buy another one!
Never wear my Villa shirts out - only to Villa games, home and away.
Wear Villa socks every day to work - family buy me loads - every Christmas!
Wear claret and blue shirt/tie combo every day for work - never the same on consecutive days - and no club ties. eg: pale blue shirt, claret tie.
TBH, quite classy.
Some people notice. Others just think I'm sartorially elegant!
UTV!

Living in Manchester, I do take great pride in putting my shirt on after a win, and taking it on a walk through town after a win. I live in the city centre if anyone was wondering.

It was especially delightful on doing so the day after we beat City. Actually if have to admit to getting back from the City game and putting my shirt on for a walk to tesco that evening!

Scarf is on with my suit this morning. Still buzzing!!!

First Villa shirt I ever bought was the lime green away shirt last season for a tenner. Wear it occasionally for cycling, nice bright colour, and occasionally at the gym when the rest of my kit is going mouldy in the bottom of sports bag.

I never wear the shirt, but I've got some Villa-related t-shirts - my favourite being the one with McGrath written across the top and his face beneath it, which I wear during the summer. It's funny when I notice people looking at it and thinking, 'why does that picture ring a bell from somewhere?'.

Last summer I saw a lad wearing a Villa top outside of the supermarket, so went straight over to him, shook his hand and asked him whether he followed the Villa as I'd never seen a Villa shirt around town before, to which he replied that he didn't and that it had been given to him as a gift. Didn't really seem to know much about it, which made me look a bit of tit.

Sometimes wear one at the gym or when playing football.

Used to make me smile when I'd go to the villa non match day. There would always be someone in a villa top.

Tommy Johnson was once asked a question,  do you wear your top at home. He replied no, but I know a fellow teammate who does.  I'm sure it was on one of the videos.

When a teen in the 70's people wearing replica stuff were considered strange - have never worn a Villa shirt but was bought a smart claret t-shirt with crest for Xmas but I am too much of a wimp to wear just that in this weather. Goes on underneath the layers.

never wear/buy 'new' replica shirts, but have a 80/81 and a 82 euro that I wear out and about, and a very nice blue one with very subtle year and aston villa on it. had a few fans of other teams tell me its smart (Im a scruff btw).

I wear them. Don't care what anyone else thinks I love our kits. Our replicas are generally smart. I have a player issue 2007/8 away shirt, it's the white Nike one that has blue pinstripes on it, and our current home one.

Would love the mita copiers white away one from the late 80s as that was my first replica given to me by a cousin but lost it years ago :(

And the last Nike home shirt we had. Fucking hard to find that now but it's a really nice top. Bastards.

Cheers PBP. Hope I see us win it in my lifetime. I'm 24.

I think to win it now with the way the game has changed would be a bigger achievement than the first to be honest. You never know though, things can change quickly in football. Nobody would have thought Greece could win the Euros or Bradford make the cup final. That's the only bit of hope I cling to.

I hope you do to
Imagine how I felt as a 10 year old walking down witton lane with my grandad when we had been relegated to the old 3rd division. Then just over 10 years later watching super Dennis lift that cup. Who could of seen that one coming definitely not me.
So always cling to the hope that it will happen cause that is what my grandad told me the stepping stones of wembley 71 and the league cup win of 75 and the magical team of gray Cropley and little deehan etc just made you think that something magical was on the horizon.
You never know in 30 years time you might be writing this post to another generation of villa fans keep I hope you do mate.

My first car turned out to be a 500 quid rust bucket that wouldn't start, my first shag was a chubby lass from Essex with my mate on sloppy seconds and my first pint was followed by 3 or 4 more, a marathon vomiting session, and my first hangover.  My first Villa European Cup win would be pretty hard to beat though.

Hardly wear mine - got an Acorns one I wear to matches if I'm not going out afterwards or taking youngsters who like to wear their colours. Also got an old AST blue one that I wear if I'm biking up the canals.

When I was a youth I'd go to games with a shirt over a sweatshirt and nothing else even in the middle of winter just as the young lads do now. Too cold for me these days.

I've got a two and a half year old son and we're expecting twin boys shortly so in the future I am anticipating a) less sleep b) a lot more replica kit around the house

I only ever wear it when out shopping with the missus and also only if I have it tucked into the replica shorts, with the replica socks on to.

Lots of people wave at me while I walk around the Trafford Centre, so I assume they think its a good thing.

I have a couple of the retro shirts including the 57 cup final the first two le coq ones and the classic late 70's home shirt.

I received the current home shirt for Christmas this year and whilst it looks ok, it's terrible to wear, especially in the summer of QLD. I wear it in the pool taking my daughter to swimming lessons and that will be it!

At the Adelaide test match I wore the old 70's one and had quite a few people comment on it. At the end of the night we were in a pub and I'd just got a pint in when this Indian security guard came over and told me I couldn't stay and had to leave. When I asked why, he was shifty for a bit and wouldn't answer and then said its because you have a villa shirt on. As I went to protest he cracked a smile and it was then I noticed a guy sitting at a table near the door pointing at a dangling bollocks tattoo on his calf and cracking up laughing.

He came over and we had a bit of a chat and he was actually alright. The funny thing was he pointed to a bloke sitting up by the bar also on his own and said: he's blues too. When I asked why they weren't sitting together he said: we don't get along!! I was laughing and said why not? And he said, he's a right miserable c***!!

IMO unless you are under 13 or at a match absolutely not. Perhaps in a pub watching a match as long as its covered up on leaving premises. The sight of fat middle aged Brits abroad wearing football shirts straining over their gut is a national embarrassment.

IMO unless you are under 13 or at a match absolutely not. Perhaps in a pub watching a match as long as its covered up on leaving premises. The sight of fat middle aged Brits abroad wearing football shirts straining over their gut is a national embarrassment.

Charming - I will be wearing mine on holiday in the canaries with pride !

I wear mine when cycling, skiing (under my ski jacket), hiking or sports days when I am required to compete in teacher-student 5-a-side, football or basketball (I refuse to play handball or egg-chase)

That's the wallpaper on my work computer. I was at that game as well  8)

Also my wallpaper at work.  As I've got a dual screen set up the rest of the office are under no illusions where my allegiances lie.  (Previously the outside of the Holte.)

Only wear mine (the FXPro with the checks down the sides,a 40th birthday present from a non-lapsed Holte Ender) for biking to work in the summer.

Match days, nights down the local only. My Villa shorts are worn on a regular basis however. Good for the beach.

Wearing it around Melbourne allows fellow fans to gravitate towards to me and discuss the beautiful game - which is a pleasant distraction from the cricketing shower of shite I've had to endure recently. When Heskey's Newcastle Jets were in town last season, I went to the game in one of my villa numbers and ended up chatting to a group of villa fans who had done the same! Heskey, much like Australian footy in general, was shite that day.

You'll soon have good reason to wear your shirt out.

I was recently given the task of creating the campaign for Cancer Research UK's, Football Shirt Friday. Which naturally meant that there was one shirt that was definitely going to appear. Thanks to the club for giving their consent as well, especially as a number of other teams declined.

Nice job. Why would a club decline?

Couple of clubs refused because of their existing links to other charities. One club refused, after originally consenting, once they were told that we'd need to remove all sponsor logos in post-production.

Villa, as you'd expect, sent a nice note with their consent and gave us a contact if we needed any other help.

That's why we are the best football club in the world. Well done by the way.

not being pedantic, but isn't the villa shirt used one if the old nike ones from when we had the acorns logo? Obviously they wouldn't object to the logo being removed given the cause, but you could understand if not sympathise with a club whose shirt had say a gambling or alcohol sponsor not being willing/ permitted to show the particular shirt without the sponsors logo.

The Villa shirt is the Acorns/Nike edition, mostly because it's the most recent home shirt that I own. We tried it with my lime green Macron/Genting away shirt too, but it didn't look as good.

It's for clubs to decide what they are and aren't comfortable with, and it's not for me to judge. Which is why I wouldn't name the clubs in a public forum.

But I did find the spectrum of response fascinating; from 'yep great, do whatever you have to', 'we'd love to be a part of it', 'we're happy for you to use one of our retro kits without sponsors but not a current shirt', to 'not if you're going to remove sponsor logos', 'no, we have our own exclusive charity commitments' and around half of the Premier League clubs who simply didn't respond at all. And special mention to one club who sent us a shirt to use 'on the proviso that we send it back to them after the shoot'.

Everytime Villa is playing at my local pub I go and see them with one my shirts under a jacket, either the home reebok of the season 1997-98 or my white retro replica shirt of the season 80-81 with the claret and blue collar to show my support as there aren't many villa supporters around my place ! Otherwise I might were them to go running or to take a walk, especially the day after a nice victory haha.

It often provokes interesting conversations about football with people that notice it in general, which is nice !

We're doing Football Shirt Friday and I will proudly wear my Rotterdam shirt to work, it's a while since I wore it and it might be a bit of a snug fit.

I'm hoping we raise about £50 and the company will match whatever we raise.

Great stuff Villan For Life. I'll be hammering around London between client meetings, rocking the Acorns home shirt/suit jacket combo.
