Good stuff, love the banner! I wonder if we played a weakened team as we were playing Stoke a few days later...

Great stuff Ian! Lev Yashin in goal for Dynamo

When did the rattle disappear from football grounds?

Love those old news reels- crowd "reactions" filmed before the game etc. How difficult would it be for any Villa fan to get to that game- middle of the cold war, restricted travel, currency restrictions etc etc?

Steve Gough did a coach.

Crikey I moan if I have to get up early to get to Norwich-respect to the old timers!

It's a bit fuzzy and so is my memory but Gordon Lee, Jimmy Dugdale and Nigel Sims are in the line-up. What looks like Jimmy MacEwan too, and possibly Harry Burrows. No Gerry Hitchens who had probably not quite departed for Inter, I can't see Viv Crowe, Pat Saward or Peter McP either.
We also played what I think was Dynamo Kiev around that time. Joe Mercer later described the match as being between what was effectively the Soviet national team and our youth team. We won 1-0. Mercer said it as the proudest moment of his managerial career - this was after he had on cups with ManCity.

The early sixties, pretty much when chanting really took hold. The rosette lasted a little longer. I remember seeing them for sale at the 71 league cup final but they had long since disappeared from 'normal' games.

I still have my rosettes from the '75 & '77 LC Finals. Somewhere.

When I started watching in 1966 I had two rattles. A small one in a light plain oak colour and a rather larger white wooden one with the letters AVFC painted on both sides alternately in claret and blue. Probably used it for about a season and half sitting next to my Dad about 6 rows back in the Witton Lane stand. I dont suppose he is still alive but I would like to apologise to the man who sat in front of us who got whacked across the head with it on more than one occasion.
Also had an approximately 12" diameter claret and blue rosette for the '71 League Cup final and a couple of small plastic replica league cups with claret and blue ribbons attached. (F#%k you Chivers and Perryman!)
