Aston Villa completed their biggest ever transfer deal when they signed two Derby County players, striker Tommy Johnson and full-back Gary Charles, for a combined fee of 2.9 million pounds.
Both players have signed three-and-a-half year contracts with the option of a further 12 months.
Brian Little, Aston Villa's manager, said: "There has been some speculation for several weeks about both players joining Villa, but it's taken some time to reach a fee acceptable to both clubs."
Charles, described by Little as the best young full-back in the country, said: "It's always been a dream to make a move to such a club as Villa."
With midfielder Ian Taylor arriving from Sheffield Wednesday two weeks ago the latest transfers bring Little's total spending to 4 million pounds since taking over from Ron Atkinson last month.

God I feel old!
-
Two players from Derby and a Sheffield Wednesday squad player. No good will come of it.
-
Is it just me or does reading that make anyone else yearn for the old days?

Wasn't that followed by a Blackburn reserve then two players from relegated sides and a young foreigner?
-
When did Southgate and Milosevic come in then?
And others like Draper and Curcic.
-
From memory Southgate, Draper and Milo was Summer 95. Curic Summer 96
-
IIRC Savo, Draper and Southgate were summer 1995 signings.
Curcic? 97ish?
-
Both made their mark in curious but physically similar ways. One on the pitch when we played Spurs and the other after he left us via something rather unpleasant in a car.

1995/1996 season - one of the great Villa seasons of recent memory.

Super Tom and Gary Charles I remember signed on the Friday and travelled with the squad up to Barnsley the following day for our FA Cup tie. They didn't play but Super Tom was a starter in the next game vs QPR and set up Deano Saunders with two great chances that Deano managed to smash off the underside of the crossbar. Taylor we signed at the end of Dec 1994 I do believe, he made his debut on Boxing Day vs Arsenal and then scored on his home debut vs Chelsea. My dad was gutted as he'd bought me a Whittingham 22 shirt the week before, quite an expensive name and two numbers to pay for.
-
Alan Wright we bought in early 1995. Julian Joachim arrived a couple of weeks before the League Cup Final in 1996, he scored on his home debut vs Blackburn. Curcic and Nelson both signed summer of 1996.

The away trips in the two cup runs that season were awesome.

if memory serves the league cup we went to Peterborough 1-1, Arsenal 2-2. I think the other legs were at home.
FA Cup - Ipswich 3-1 Sheff United 1-0 and Forest 1-0. I went to the Forest game, Franz Carr scored and we wore the blue AST kit which I loved - mainly cos we usually won in it - even though everyone else seemed to hate it. We were also drawn away to Gravesend but played the game at VP as the away team.

Spurs was 1993-94 season, Houghton and Barrett the goalscorers.

I loved that Villa kit, I loved that Villa team, I loved that era and life was generally awesome back then (I was 14). Football now still means an awful lot to me but back then it really was the be-all and end-all.

We signed Mark Draper on my birthday, so it would have been Summer 1995.

Sheffield United, Ipswich, the semi final at Highbury...
I had a fiver on Gary Charles at 66-1 to score first against Sheffield United and he missed what was basically an open goal, with a header, at 0-0. Everyone else in the away end got over it pretty quickly. I didn't.
Sid was playing for Sheff Utd then - I remember the Villa fans singing his name and cheering his every touch while the game was going on. Only time I can recall non-offensive singing for an opposition player.
-
I won a King's ransom for a nipper at Middlesbrough the one year.
New Years Day evening kick off. My two quid bet I was allowed for each game (put on by a family member of course) went on Alan Wright for first goal at 66-1.
I don't think I would have the oomph to do that trip on New Years Day ever again.
Only 5 of us went from Cheltenham so Johnny Holder drove to Villa and we caught the official coaches up.
