Ron Saunders is 81 today I would like to thank him for some of my best times at the Villa.
Happy Birthday Ron
-
That link to an interview with him that was posted on here, I think for his birthday last year, was fantastic. First interview in years I think and a clearly old man who looks a bit more frail than we remember. But the way he spoke you would have liked to see him walk into a modern day dressing room and kick their arses. It was clear he hadn't changed and didn't suffer fools. I can remember thinking that even in his old age if he said jump I would ask how high.

I wonder what he would have made of people like Ireland and Hutton?

Ireland would have rotted in the reserves and Hutton? Well at least he always worked his socks off.
Happy birthday Ron, and thank you.
-
He was around before I started going down but obviously a legend if ever there was one. Happy Birthday Ron.

I think that any one that was lucky enough to be following us then had the happiest times of any Villa fans for decades.
That was the greatest period in our History certainly our modern History.

I often think back and wonder if Ron had stayed another 5 years or so where he would have taken us - would we have regularly won trophies - I think so.

Three trophies and a promotion in seven years suggest we would have.

I don't think we'd have done much more. A League Cup and UEFA Cup qualification maybe, but certainly not any sort of dominance. I believe he'd achieved his ambition when we won the league, stuck two fingers up at everyone who'd criticised and dismissed him ever since he'd been at Manchester City and after that he lost a bit of his drive.

Maybe true, we were midtable around the time he left - it would have been interesting to see who he added to the side - blair wasnt much more a squad filler really - I think we would still have been around the top 6 but he may well have brought us the fa cup that so many of us crave .
We will never know - but at least we are grateful for what he achieved with us - great days!

The other thing, of course, is that he would have left the day after Doug came back.

I wonder what he would have made of people like Ireland and Hutton?
Probably nothing.
Because he wouldn't have signed them to start with. Especially Ireland.
-
The only man I ever called "Sir" and meant it
-
I'd also like to thank him for the cracking job he did at SHA and Stripeyfilth.
