I do agree with Clampy though, there is a good player in there.

Maybe if he hadn't had some of his off field issues he'd have been given a bit longer.

If he gets this move he's a lucky boy. He stays in the Prem for the immediate future and gets a chance to really make himself stand out. He has to up his game to make it at this level though.

I still think that if he'd got himself right off the field he'd be exactl the type of midfielder we're short of, who can make things happen when it's a tight game.  I do think there was no way back for him though so best all round for him to leave, I do reserve the right to be very upset if he gets a run as an attacking midfielder and shows his true ability though.

I'd be quite upset if it's not more than that, regardless of some opinions on here he's in his early 20s, a full international, and has a decent amount of premier league performances to his name £2-3m should be the going rate.

As we saw with Bent, we've made it so clear we want shot that we're not gonna get his real market value.

There different situations, I'm convinced Bent's price was affected by his injury record for the past 18months more than anything else.  He was available for roughly half of our games in that period, that's a big risk when it's a player who has always been about his pace.

I don't think Bent is a player who was always about pace, to be fair. He struck me as one who was about being in the right place at the right time. He's also brilliant at beating the offside.

He was brilliant at using his pace I agree, but his ability was still underpinned entirely by his pace.  He looked ineffective at the start of last season because the fitness wasn't there and his pace was down.

Post by: Concrete John on September 02, 2013, 02:00:04 PM
I think he relied more on his pace earlier in his career, when Charlton basically played to release him on the counter.  His main attributes, like most true goal poachers, are movement and finishing.

How can Kozak increase in value from less than £2m when Lazio signed him to £7m when he has done nothing to increase his value?

£1.75m is ok, slightly less than I suggested earlier but I was closer than the less than a million I'd seen on here and in a few other places.

I doubt it , what ive seen of helenius has looked promising  - he is not the same kind of player as benteke .

Helenius and Kozak along with the current 3 strikers give us options .

Bit of a red herring that, don't you think? We start with one Big Striker and two pacey options to play just off on either side, more like inside-forwards than strikers. Hardly the position you'd expect to find Helenius or Kozak.

Well not having seen Kozak I suspect it is more of a direct ball option in the event we are chasing a game and go to 4-4-2 along with having competition for Helenius in the event Benteke is injured or suspended.

So as Eastie summised gives us options

RE Bannan, for all the talk of him being greedy by rejecting a move to Blackburn by waiting around a lot longer he's got a move to a (for now) premiership club, probably a bit more money and we've got more money for him if the purported fees around either move were accurate. He also avoided a perennial crisis club lead by a bunch of yampy chicken farmers. Everyone's a winner!

Like others, I still think there's a player in him. A move will do him good.

Palace have continued their deadline day dealings by signing Scotland international Barry Bannan from Aston Villa on a three year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 23 year old links up with Ian Holloway again having been a part of the Blackpool side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2010.

Bannan, who now links up with his international team mates for their World Cup qualifiers against Belgium and Macedonia, has had loan spells at Derby County and Leeds United but broke through into the Villa first-team having progressed through their academy, and made 83 appearances for them since making his debut in December 2008.

Speaking to Palace Player, he said: “I went back home to Scotland over the weekend ahead of meeting up with the international squad so I've had to travel back down but it's a great bit of news for me.

“I was at Blackpool with the gaffer here when they got promotion that year and that was probably the highlight of my career so far.

“It is a big move for me to leave Villa and I would like to thank the fans there but it's a new chapter in my life now and I can't wait to get started.

“I want to get myself in the door and start training and hopefully get myself in the team. I haven't played this season and didn't much last year so I can't wait to get going.”

A bit of talent, but 100% wrong attitude on and off the pitch.  From leaving the scene of car crashes while drunk to constantly berating team-mates for no reason whilst hitting aimless freekicks and corners...

The sad fact is he has probably just pocketed £100k out of this move. Glad him and Mr Pink have left us. Their respective destinations say it all.

He blew it with the drink driving thing really. Thought he was playing quite well at that point.

Some players who are ridiculously gifted can get away with not being in peak form off the pitch like Gazza and God even with the injuries. Fair to say Bannan can't.

No surprise to me dedicated pros like Lowton and Westwood who look after themselves off the pitch will continue to progress here and probably play for their country within the next year or two.

Bannan will this time next year be playing in the championship and he can't even get in one of the worst Scotish teams of all time.

I was his biggest fanboy but my god he's really blown his talent thus far. Hope for Palace's sake that he realises how hard he needs to work to get himself back on track.

always agreed with you on Bannan Monty
one word thats the difference between him being a good premiership player or a lower league club journey man -  attitude

As was I , thought the kid had something about him , gutted he lost his way at Villa , and hope he does not come back to haunt us

Add me to the list, I'd still have liked to see him in a central 3 as the attacking one, I still think the shit he got from the fans was more because of his personality and off-field problems than it was his performances.  I also think he'll do well if the Palace fans get behind him as he is a better player when he feels wanted.

To be fair , he never did himself any favours , but he grafted when PL came in , but lost the plot .

well trodden path , i am afraid .

I had huge hopes for him ,

Walt and Jesse are far more photogenic than Baz and Ollie.

Good luck to Bannan at his new club. I think his generation will be remembered as "What could have been" as I think they were partially ruined by not getting gradually bleeded into the team and by the two-three chaotic seasons.

If Bannan, Albrighton etc would've been gradually introduced to the first team in those two last seasons under MON I think they'd really benefitted from it and would've had better chance of reaching their potential.

Who knows, maybe under Holloway he can rekindle his career.

I'd like to see some comparison shots posted by somebody clever.

Best of luck Wee Barry, hope it works out for you (thanks for your effort on the pitch in a Villa shirt).

I like Bannan. During a spell when we were absolutely dire he was the one player looking to slip that little ball into the danger area and actually create something. Shame it hasn't worked out for him at Villa and whilst I agree with that his drink driving offence was disgraceful i'm not going to hold that against him. Paul Merson is one of my favourite players of the past twenty years and I never held his drug/drink and gambling against him. Hope he goes on to have a good career which is a lot more than I can say about Stephen Ireland.

Craven Cottage Nov 2010 - Bannan with a glorious raking ball to Albrighton. Instead control on the chest and boom into the net. The kids were more than alright.

One of my favourite villa goals in the last few years, it's a huge shame that both of them have seen their careers go backwards.

I think Albrighton was adequately introduced to first team football. His problem came after that introduction - second-season dip followed by niggling injuries.

Apart from the drink driving and partying when supposedly injured.

I know what you mean, he certainly gave his all on the pitch, but off it all we know about him suggests that he's a little fanny.
