Does anyone know when it's planned to re-open? And when are the Eddies/Social/Ad's being flattened?
-
Some info here (http://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=872&page=4&s=2dc5cf2fef24dcaa28ee2595d924317d)

It says on there it has been shut for over twenty five years. But I'm sure I had a pint in there after getting back from Milan in 1990.
-
The Aston Tavern is looking a lot sprighlier each day, it's got it's windows in now, not sure about an opening date. While we're in the area of town planning does anyone know what the plans are for the space where the Leisure Centre was?

Talking to Annie in Swan - i'm sure she said all 3 would see this season out.....dont know what would happen to King Ed's if Aston Tavern were ready before season end!!!

You did, I bought it for you in all probability, I usually did in those days. In fact it was open in '92 'cos I drank in there the night we queued for Cup QF tickets (Liverpool A, yellow kit, dumped out).
-
It was open the night we beat Inter in 1994.
-
Last time that I can remember drinking in there was the day we played Coventry towards the end of the season when Don Howe was their manager and he encouraged them into The Holte End. A few came in, they didn't stay long.
-
At the Last home game last season two barmaids from the Eddie were handing out leaflets saying the Aston Tavern would be opening August 2014, Was then told in the Eddie they Would be open for the whole of this coming season
-
I was in there the night Saunders scored in the first leg of the coca cola cup against the tramps. 1-0

When I went to the Villa with my dad in the sixties, he would always go in the Aston Tavern for a few pints before the game, he would get me a glass of orange and a packet of crisps and I would wait in the hallway near the bar, from there I could see into the bar and would despair when he got another pint at 2 45, we missed so many kick offs, wish my Dad was still around.
-
I definitely had a pre match pint in the Aston Tavern before the 1-0 win over Man U in 1992.

Any advance on late 1994? Going once......Going twice......
-
I'm sure it was open as late as 95, I can remember walking in and it being packed full of Geordies, and I'd missed that game in 94.

If you got the round in let's hope when it reopens that they put the commemorative plaque back up.

I remember being in there, for the last time, with my then Missus before that game and it really was FULL of Geordies. I wasnt sure if it was late 1994 but if you'd missed that game, I reckon that was November 95

I'm sure it was that game, yeah. It just suddenly shut down straight after.
We were milling about for a while after that, trying different boozers till we settled on the Villa Tavern.

Me and a few friends took our Geordie workmate to that game. We drove down from Telford with him wearing a claret polo shirt. When we stepped in the Tavern he was visibly nervous and not keen to show off his strong Geordie brogue. Our faces and his were a picture when we realised the place was full of Toon Army. Really odd as we used the Tavern all the time and have never seen that before. Good fans going through a shit time. I wonder how that feels?
-
I was there in the early 80s when West Ham paid a visit. Not pleasant
-
Playing pool in there on a match day was a larf,20 man killer.

We used the Villa Tavern around then. The Mild and Bitter taps had a weird rubber nozzle on them, similar to what people used to have on kitchen taps. Deafed it after a while and started to use The Albion.

I walk past the Tavern on match days and the building work is coming along nicely. With the extension on the back it looks like it'll be a substantially bigger pub when it's finished than what it was when it was closed down. I'm looking forward to it re-opening. I've got a lot of happy memories of the old place.

Me too BDE.
But someone's mentioned it's gonna be a "hotel" and aimed at.....business types? In the week? On match days?
We'll soon bring it down to earth! ;-)

Me too.
I used to go there alot in my youf.
Don't understand what they're going to do with all that extra space they're adding, unless - as FM says - it's going to be an hotel. I'd be interested in seeing the business plan that supports the case for a successful hotel.
-
There's quite a few hotels around there, or to be more accurate, subbies B+Bs.
-
Those were the days my friend.
-
There is a courtyard area for al-fresco boozing before the summer games.
-
my favourite watering hole in the 70s and 80s before the game, happy days

Is this the pub by the villa leisure centre ?
-
Yes

Is this the pub by the villa leisure centre ?
It was. The leisure centre has been demolished.

That Leisure Centre was a proper dump in its later days.
Anyway, there are a few interesting pictures on this link: http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/leisure-sites/35267-aston-tavern-birmingham.html

Nice healthy dose of racism at the start of the link!

Where was that?

'pikeys'?

When I walked past yesterday it seemed like they're building an extension to pretty much double the size of the place. It'll be massive when it's finished.
