Anyone going to be in the Barton's pre-match tomorrow? As for once i'm not selling the fanzine before a home game I thought I might pop in for a quick snifter.
-
Hell, yeah, Brother Shin. Our crowd are in the usual seats from 12. Mike J is around tomorrow. Frank and assorted family are in and who knows what Spanish Lions he can find. Outside of that, Stu who posts on here is popping in as well.
Normal drill. Through the front doors, turn right and top table before you go down the steps to the main bar.
Smoke me a pancake, I'll be back for breakfast.
-
I normally park around Electric Avenue way so I don't know that side all that well. However seeing as the old fella is giving tomorrow a miss and i'm on me todd I think i'll brave the wilds of Aston Park and go and see what the fuss is about at this Bartons gaff. I'll be the fat bastard with last years home short sleeved shirt on top of last years away long sleeved shirt trying to decide whether to have a pint or a myocardial infarction.
-
I might come down to the Bartons tomorrow for a coke (driving to Villa for the 1st time) put some faces to internet personas. Where abouts do I walk from the ground?
-
Up to Six Ways and then left as though going back into town is the most straight forward.
If all goes to plan with the stuff i'm doing before the game i'll be there around 1.30. I'll be the big bloke with a shaved head wearing a Champions of Europe trackie top. Unless it's really hot. Then i'll be the big bloke with a shaved head wearing something else.

I remember the drill, look for Rodney!

After the match is when the Barton's elite arrive. And my brother, unfortunately.
-
Is the Bartons easy to get to by taxi from the Hyatt?

Why don't you park at the Bartons and than walk up to VP?

That's a long walk. Try parking in Whitehead road/Albert road area.

In the city centre? If so, yes.

FFS!
-
Is the nightclub still in the same area as The Bartons Arms ? Was quite famous in the 70's and 80's , name escapes me.
-
Elbow room you mean?
-
Elbow Room
-
That's the one. Is it still open ? Did it have another name before Elbow Room ?
-
It closed down after a shooting incident last year. I am not aware if it reopened.

Perhaps see you there. Your all so friendly on here ;)
-
Yes come over and say hello.
-
For those hunting us down for the first time I am sporting a dark blue Armani Exchange sweatshirt.
And I look like the lovechild of Rodney Trotter and Robert De Niro.
-
Might pop in later on (after 6pm) if any of you are still there, going groundhopping first though.

I'm the one that looks like Brad Pitt. Or a Ukranian ex-boxer.
Off into town now so hopefully will see you later.
-
I'll be the one in a Villa shirt.Heading over now to see who is the ugliest..it'll probably be me!!

Did it have another name before Elbow Room ?
Perhaps, although it was called The Elbow Room in the '70's.
-
Well we briefly met Murphee. Nice chap. Stu found us. PWS is in and we have a visiting dignitary. Frankie P, International Drugs Baron.

Thanks , I may be getting it mixed up with another historic Brum club - The Rum Runner.
Didn't the Aston Hippodrome stand in that area by The Bartons ? Famous old building shame it got Demo'd. The likes of Laurel & Hardy had played there.

Next to the Elbow Room. The Drum's there now.

"A handsome Rodney Trotter" you told me !!
See you in there for the Man City game next month.

I have a photo of The Bartons from around a century ago that shows the side wall of Aston Hippodrome advertising the forthcoming appearance of Will Hay.
-
My apologies to the Bartons crowd and especially Titus. I diverted to the Holte as there is no charge today and needed to secure my cash free cash ticket!
-
I told you that I look like Brad Pitt! Was nice seeing you all, Chelts, Stu, Concrete, Amfy, Jane, Frank and anyone else there whose name i've forgotten due to old age.
-
Plenty in. Fletch was outside as well.
Jane, Mike Jeffries, Amfy, cdbullyweefan and Stu who we found earlier and decided we wanted to keep are at the Flapper in town.
I am too old these days so am nearly back on the train.
Oh, and they have taken that old bugger Cooper with them as well.
-
Did anyone meet Titus Anthrax? He was going to get a taxi from the Hyatt and drink, obviously, in the snobs bar.
-
Enjoyed meeting you all - Good day and good win. Love the Bartons, will be coming back every chance I get! :-D
-
It was good to welcome Concrete B, Stu and PWS to the Barton's and to meet up with the usual crowd. See you all at the Liverpool game
-
Jane has kidnapped Stu, not sure if he'll ever be back, you know what she's like.
-
I was going to be a gentleman and not mention it, but seeing as Cooper already has... I bet Stu has cougar scratches all over his back by now!
-
Ahahaha.
Er, morning guys *cough*
-
Finished the walk of shame then Stu?
-
Seriously though, it was great to meet you all finally. Great laugh! See you again at Liverpool :)
-
I'm not doing that every other week! I'm far too old for those sort of shenanigans.

Thanks, Laurel and Hardy played in ASTON, Birmingham. w/c 22 March 1954,
at the Aston Hippodrome Theatre. They stayed at the Station Hotel not sure if that was in Aston though. There is a picture of them walking past the Bartons (built 1901 as M&Bs flagship pub) not sure how to post the pic though.

Yeah, the same one I posted hours* ago.
* a second or so
-
Beaten by 8 seconds! Where is that ban button......
-
Thanks for sorting the pic lads.
-
Done a bit of digging into The Station Hotel where some reports say Laurel & Hardy stayed while playing Aston/Newtown. Conflicting reports as some say they actually stayed at The Bartons ? Not sure if back in the day it had lodgings above the pub ?
-
From the pub's website. It doesn't say in so many words that Laurel and Hardy stayed at the Barton's, though they apparently did have rooms.
The Bartons Arms is famed for its long association with the Aston Hippodrome, once the Midland’s premier variety theatre. The most famous double act in film history Arthur Stanley Jefferson and Norvell Hardy, were patrons of The Bartons Arms. Known as Laurel & Hardy they worked the variety show circuit, when not busy making films, which brought them to The Bartons Arms. Working at the now demolished Aston Hippodrome they would rest at The Bartons Arms between shows on their last tour of the UK in May 1954.
Marie Lloyd, Sid Field, Enrico Caruso and the immortal Charlie Chaplin also drank and lodged at The Bartons Arms.
-
Elbow room you mean?
My Dad, who is a wind up merchant, told me when I was a kid that the Elbow Room is where they hold arm wrestling competitions. Took me years to discover that this was in fact bollocks.
-
Have we an update then? Does Stu have cougar related tetanus or will he really make the Liverpool game?
And did Amfy get home in good order after all that cider?

I was fine. The Aspalls, the Merrydown, & the Bulmers were all good. It was the experimental cider - The Oaple at The Bartons - that simply sent me to sleep!
I need to remember to steer clear of experimental cider!
-
Experimental Cider ? Health & Safety ??
-
I experimented with three pints of it before the game. Yikes.
-
One pint of it was enough for me.
-
What was the abv % :o
-
Only 5.8 iirc. There was a 7.3 cider which I was too skit to try.

I've has the 7.3 before and I swear it wasn't as strong as that!
-
Only 5.8% ! That's quite strong if you're drinking by the pint. Anything over 7% in pints is asking for trouble.
-
I'm visiting The Barton's for the first time this lunchtime. If any of you guys want to put a face to the username and want to say hello I'll be in an AC/DC style AVFC t-shirt.
-
I'll be there after the game but I'm a bit scared to walk up to a stranger and say "excuse me, are you Big Dick"?
-

Better than saying 'big dick is it ?"
-
Through front doors. Turn right towards the bar and we are likely to be on the first table. I am today sporting a black Armani jumper with a big bird on the front.
I shall now leave you to have fun making gags about which big bird it is!
-
Might pop in post-match on my way back from Alvechurch v Gornal.
-
What a beautifully kept pub. I can't believe I've never taken the time to visit it before.

It's an absolute gem isn't it?
