Too late I'm in Chi Town week of 8 July.
-
Just booked the hotel for a 2 night stay, driving from st Louis (4hr drive) and there's many more travelling greater distances. Simon Leach deserves great praise for what he's doing with the Chicago Villans and it's worth keeping track on us ex pats flying the Villa flag over here. We're meeting up in a pub (0630am) ran by an Arsenal fan and is the HQ for the Chicago Arsenal supporters club. Many neutrals over here pick up on clubs that are the most often mentioned and Simon is making great efforts to put out our name in lights in a city that boasts a district called Villa Park.
It will be interesting to see how our numbers compare to the well established Arsenal supporters club and I hope that some of us stay sober enough to get pictures and you tube clips for viewing across the pond. We hope to do you proud and make as much noise, as our terrific away support always do
-
Look forward to seeing the 'take over' of the Arsenal pub and well done onthe good work. Would be great to have your ouwn Villa pub near Villa Park.

A word of warning to all those traveling there for the event: GET THERE EARLY.
Long time member of this parish and often seen sporting a dart player size Villa shirt, Chicago Villa, likes a pie or five.
Well done, Mr Leech for keeping the flag flying over the pond.

Are they still doing those Soccer AM commentaries over there?
BULLDOGGING: When a player shows determination to win the ball back.
CHICKEN WING BATTLE: A tussle between players, during which they use their arms and elbows to fight for the ball.
FINAL SIGNAL: The final whistle.
IN THE WHEELHOUSE: Within easy reach of the goalkeeper.
KNOCK LIKE A BEAR KISS: A tackle that is more clumsy than dangerous, but appears to be worse than it actually is.
MATCH UPS: Man marking.
MIDFIELD STRIPE: The halfway line.
ON FRAME: A shot on target.
ON THE DOORSTEP: In front of the goal.
REAL ESTATE: Used to describe the space or lack of space in the penalty area.
ON THE DIAGONAL SURFACE: A cross-field pass.
SLOW ROLLER: A weak shot at goal.
SOME WHEELS: A quick turn of pace.
SOUTHPAW: A left-footed player.
STUTTER STEP: A Cristiano Ronaldo style step-over.
TAKEAWAY: An interception or tackle after which the player comes away with the ball.
UPLOAD: To kick the ball with full power.

Thank You Legion! Hope to see as many North American Villans as possible. The Chicago guys are phenomenal, and last year's turnout for the Villa-Fire game was amazing.

I've got commitments in California then unfortunately but fair play to you guys for getting something organised. Keep the flag flying high.

I will do my best to be there.

We were out in Chicago for the game last year and had a great time. Unfortunately I will not be able to make it this time.

I was in a bar in New York a few years ago watching one of our games with the New York Lions. One thing i did find strange was that they applauded every time we got a corner.
-
Would love to go to Chicago, as much to watch Da Bears as anything. Have fun guys.

I mentally switch off, take a nap when we get a corner, such is the sheer unlikeliness of anything happening from it.

If you go in the summer you should go to Wrigley Field too, a great piece of American tradition right there even if you know nothing about baseball, just sit in the stands and enjoy the beers!

What did they do when we conceded a corner? Cover their faces? Start praying?

I think that "knowing nothing about baseball" is the best state in which to watch the Cubs

Hi guys,
I am looking for some advice.
I am visiting the states for two weeks in October, it will be my wifes 1st visit. Our intention is to travel through New England and experience the Fall.
We will spend 4 nights in New York, the intention is to catch a train to get out of NY to Brattelbro. There pick up a car and travel on to the White Mountains.
Not sure how many nights to spend in the area, we want to travel back South (bypassing Boston) to Cape Cod and Marthas Vineyard.
From the travel guides that seems to be the most vibey area in the region and my thoughts are that we should maximise our time there.
What about Portland, is it worth having a stop over there before going South ?
Can you catch a train from M.Vineyard back to NY ?
As locals any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
P.M Me if you can help.

Also where Da Bears played the majority of their games, more than Soldier Field.

Steamer,
Reading your post here, i'm down in Providence, but i would swap a night in Portsmouth NH instead of Portland. Great town, fantastic sea food great pubs-try the Coat of Arms ran by some Black Country boys.
Cape Cod is fun but everything shuts down at the end of the season. And there is no train from MV back too NYC!
-
Is this Portland on the West Coast?
-
Portland Maine, 2hrs north of Boston.

I wouldnt bypass Boston - great City and good for 2 or 3 days visit. Cambridge nearby worth a visit (home of Harvard).

Thanks Culture, I saw Portsmouth as a good place in the guides, how do you get back to NY from M.V is it from Rhode Island ?
Thanks again for your advice, what are your thoughts on the white mountains leg, I really fancied it at first but have not been grabbed by any of the guides.
It seems very hiking, etc . Great for a day or so but not for so long with many other options.
-
Steamer, yes the White Mountains is really for hiking/skiing and once you move too north your in deliverance country. Portsmouth is a great base camp if your planning on a few days with Portland and all the mountains about an hrs drive away. MV ferries go from Rhode Island or the Cape and the train back to NY from Providence is pretty simple. Any thing else let me know.
-
Thanks for that, if you don't mind I will send a couple of questions over the weekend, Thanks
-
Steamer,
Was you after more information??
-
Hi Culture,
I am looking for some more advice.
I have been battling with my internet connection, let me draw up a mail over the weekend. If you do not mind I will P.M you rather than through the forum.

Wrigley's been improved in recent years but it's still low down on my list of ballparks.
-
Wrigley will only get better, as for the 9 lumps on the field that is another matter!
