Have we announced any yet?
I assume we're going to Walsall as usual?
I'd like away matches against teams who aren't too far but whose grounds I've yet to visit, and a home friendly against Bayern Munich/Dortmund/Real Madrid or Barcelona please.
Surely Lamb Tikka Balti can arrange us a match against Dortmund? Would be ace to host them if they won the European Cup.
-
I wouldn't be suprised if we went of another tour of the States. I hope we can get another European opponent. That Werder Bremen game was a good one. Dortmund would be even better!
-
Now we're safe I believe we play in Dublin v Shamrock Rovers. First weekend in August, when the Championship season starts.
-
Canada and a stop in Vancouver would be amazing, Man Shitty came here a couple of years ago, just being selfish like!
-
We didn't play Walsall last season.
-
Playing the Whitecaps, seeing NRC vs AVFC this Summer in the BC sunshine would be awesome...
-
We're playing Boldmere St Michaels on 17th July. Not sure how strong a side their will be though.

Really enjoyed it when we played over there a few years ago.
-
Looking forward to a break from football. Couldn't care less about pre-season

I like pre-season. Games often played in the sun with nothing riding on them.

I like pre-season as well, but i enjoy the break just as much. It's nice to switch off and enjoy doing something else.
-
Yep the Ashes.
-
Wonder if we'll play a big European team again.
-
We have got Wigan on Sunday...
-
Yep the Ashes.
Cricket bores me to tears personally, i hate it.
-
Hoping for a pre season friendly with Wolves, last years getting cancelled was rather annoying.
-
My fave pre-season game of recent times was Inter Milan. It was a beautiful sunny day and we tore them a new one.
Also enjoyed a trip to Lincoln City a few years back. We lost 3-1 but it was a nice trip on a sunny evening and one of their fans to the right of where Villa were sitting got so much stick for being fat he had to leave. Not nice in hindsight, but extremely funny at the time. I seem to remember one of their stands was nothing more than a covered bus shelter.
I am looking forward to some cricket and a break from football, but watching Villa at a lower league ground in the sunshine is always a nice pre-curser to the new season.

There is no chance that we will go to America on anything like the scale of last year's tour. Lambert was not impressed by it at all. Regarding Europe, it is understood that a German visit may be on the cards but not necessarily to any of the big clubs there.
-
I wouldn't ming Burton being a regular trip.
-
Inuit United.
-
Rumours we're going to Crewe preseason. Part of the Westwood deal
-

One for the anoraks.
-
Feynoord or Celtic please.
-
A trip to 'Nam Town would go down well

We played pre season there in 89 I think.
-
Crewe would be good, Rotherham is a lovely new ground and think they'd get a few in for a visit from us.
-
Anywhere with decent pubs and late trains home.
-
I quite fancy a big Scottish trip, avoiding the Old Firm of course. Hearts or Hibs would be quite fun.

Fuck that I remember Hibs coming down for pre season That wasn't much fun.

Derby, Nottingham, Burton, Sheffield or even somewhere near Manchester then?

Ireland during the week that I am over there anyway would be good.

They had (probably still have) a nasty hoolie element, I'm guessing it's something to do with that. Sad bunch of twats.

More Hibs than Villa fans and getting chased down Witton Lane for a start,I left 10 minutes early thinking it would be ok.
-
Ireland during the week that I am over there anyway would be good.
Shamrock Rovers first weekend in August. I was all set to go, Ger even helped me find a lovely place to stay, then my mate pops up telling me he's getting married in Devon that weekend and would I be the best man.
I'm honoured, but at the same time feeling childishly resentful that I can't go on a big Irish Villa piss-up.

Crewe sounds exactly the sort of game I was on about. Please be a Saturday.

"The visits of the two sides, which are both expected to be midweek, will bring plenty of excitement and intrigue."
Eurgh. Thats annoying.
-
Didn't read the article or I too would've been annoyed by the midweek reference.
That's no fucking use.

Still risky. Somebody could kidnap Benteke on a tour like that.
Stick to Crewe and Boldmere.
-
Celtic in The Petrov Trophy would be good

Our recent fascist-crushing exploits would go down well over there.

Hamburg at home but preferably away please! In fact a pre season tour of Germany would be ideal!

Fuck Hamburg.

Why's that then??

Right-wing, Chelsea and Rangers-sympathising scum.

I might have guessed..............Scheiss St. Pauli...............would hate to disappoint you!! :)

I quite fancy a big Scottish trip, avoiding the Old Firm of course. Hearts or Hibs would be quite fun.
We had an away friendly at Hibs about 25 years ago. I had been working nights in London and was already knackered but still set off up there. After a few pints, the tiredness and alcohol kicked in to make me sleep through most of the second half. We got back to Birmingham on a late train that did not officially stop at New Street but we knew there was a crew change there so it allowed us to get off totally lagging.

1991-92. One of the deals British Rail used to do meant that it cost pennies to get there and catch the overnight train back. I remember a pub close to the station that sold Ansell's Mild, bunking into the ground and our players pissing off the Hibs fans by refusing to talk to anyone afterwards.
-
A bloke I know in the forces, based in Paderborn (Germany), reckons Padeborn have announced a game against us over there on Friday July 12th.
-
I wonder if anything was arranged with Clermont Foot as part of the Sylla deal?
-
It's up on the OS that we've got a 3 match tour of Germany in July. I've never heard of any of the clubs we're playing though.
Also Wycombe, Luton, Crewe and Walsall.
-
They're pretty small clubs but in nice areas of Germany, that'll be a good little tour.
-
Villa will fly out to Germany for a pre-season training camp ahead of the 2013-14 campaign.
Paul Lambert, who has strong links with the country through his Champions League-winning stint at Borussia Dortmund, will take his emerging claret and blue side there for nine days.
Villa begin preparations by returning to training at Bodymoor Heath on July 1.
Lambert's team then head off to Germany on Sunday July 7 before jetting back on Monday July 15.
The schedule in between times will include intense workouts to build up fitness as well as three games.
Villa will face SV Rodinghausen at Häcker- Wiehenstadion on Wednesday July 10 [ko 7pm], SC Paderborn at Benteler Arena on Friday July 12 [ko 6pm] and VfL Bochum at Rewirpowerstadion on Sunday July 14 [ko 3.30pm].
Villa then return to the UK to take on domestic opposition as they gear up for the upcoming top-flight season.
It's Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park on Saturday July 20 [ko 3pm], Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday July 23 [ko 7.45pm] and Crewe at the Alexandra Stadium on Friday July 26 [ko 7.30pm].
The annual trip to Bescot Stadium returns as Villa take on Walsall on Wednesday July 31 [ko 7.30pm].
Club chiefs are also working hard to organise two other games before the start of the new term.
-
Hamburg at home but preferably away please! In fact a pre season tour of Germany would be ideal!
You got your wish then.
-
Can I be the first to mention what happened after the last time we played Bochum pre-season?
-
Oops, Didn't notice other pre-season discussion, Mods please feel free to merge if appropriate.
-
Can I be the first to mention what happened after the last time we played Bochum pre-season?
Go on then.
-
That'll be a nice little tour that.
-
Are we gonna play anyone decent?!
-
Thought there were plans for a game in Ireland. Says 2 more to be announced
-
Are we gonna play anyone decent?!
It's only about building up fitness so it doesn't really matter.
-
Are we gonna play anyone decent?!
Playing at Luton in July !
-
Luton nice local one for me
-

I was thinking the same thing!

Au contraire. We also played them over there the week before.
-
Wicked. Long weekend in Germany and a nice local trip to Luton!
-
Chuffed to see the Walsall game's back. The only friendly I make it to and always a good laugh.
-
The Crewe game will be a nice return for Westwood being as he was captain there last season.
-
Wycombe away sounds good! Can see us taking a few there too seeing as (as it stands) its our first pre-season Saturday in England
-
I know a bit about Paderborn and Bochum thanks to my inability to get St Pauli out of the 2.Bundesliga on football manager. But that other German side doesn't even have a wikipedia page, so Im going to assume they dont actually exist and this is just a ploy for Lambert to go on a jolly with his old Dortmund mates or something.
-
Would have liked Crewe on a Saturday, I've been to all the rest in England
-

Bochum is in the Ruhr Valley and has to share popularity with Schalke, Dortmund, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Essen, Monchengladbach and Duisberg. All I really know of them is that they have a nice compact little stadium and their most famous fan is Herbert Gronemeyer of 'Das Boot' fame. He also bothers the charts in Germany.
-
One other thing the eagle eyed may have spotted is that between Bochum and Dortmund there is a place called Witten.

Rödinghausen. They finished top of the 6th tier this season.

Wycombe is quite tempting, being on a Saturday.
Plus I said to my missus if I finished above her in the fantasy footy her forfeit was to come to a friendly with me (I would have had to go to a musical with her).
-
Ahhhh Paderborn, happy memories of the towns nightlife. Got it's own airport and I think you can fly direct from Bournemouth & Brum.
-

Romford is twinned with Witten. A school I worked in does a student exchange every couple of years and I met some nice teachers who came over with their group!

I wonder if Mr Sox will drive me to the games?

Ah, sorry I didn't recall that. Might I then go on to suggest that you get on the blower to the VP hierarchy and have then arrange a return game as quickly as possible.
-
Luton nice local one for me
And me, will pop along to that :)
-
Can someone please tell me what happened last time we played Bochum? Before I burst, like
-

It was in the 1980/81 season if that gives anything away
-
Luton? Fucking Luton?
Won't be going to that one!
-
A shame we couldn't have got at least one decent team to give us a real test.
-
Pre-season, especially at the time we're touring Germany, is only really about fitness.
-
Wycombe away... A repeat of my first ever Villa game and only 40 miles from where I live. Wonderful.
Has anyone looked into the Germany trip? It seems by looking at the map that flying to Dortmund is the best option, with Paderborn and Bochum about an hour and a half away. I'll have a proper look when I'm back from work.
-

pre-season means nothing other than to get players ready for the real games ahead. It's "glamourous" I suppose to play the likes of Inter Milan as we did a few seasons back but not indicative of how that seasons going to pan out. I'd sooner we played games that give us a real test from a fintess standpoint and allows the players to build some confidence together. Once we've won the league a couple of times then we can fuck off on a tour of Asia, and find Barcelona begging us to play in a mini event with them.

Sorry to be pedantic, but it's "Duisburg" if that's OK with you, Curious (may I call you "Curious"?). Wouldn't normally be that pedantic but they have been, for my pains, my German team for the last 20+ years.
Bochum's ground is actually fantastic, and right up there with my favourites in Germany. Not as good as it used to be of course - back in the day they had standing on three sides of the ground. The away end's tucked in the corner, but there are also away seats behind the goal.
Otherwise, the ground's easily walkable from the main station. Transport links are predictably superb, with airports in Düsseldorf and Dortmund nearby and easily accessible by a proper, regular, (still) nationalised train service.
As a club, I've always quite liked Bochum. They're similar to the glorious MSV Duisburg in many ways - a solid local fan base and reasonably well liked across Germany, but up and down like a whore's drawers between the top two divisions.
-
Paderborner pilsener is the best thing to come out of Paderborn.

Don't those words "top-flight" look good!
-
Paderborner pilsener is the best thing to come out of Paderborn.
True enough. The football club are - with the greatest respect - an absolute non-entity. Only a recent entrant to the second tier and of very little interest other than to their small number of fans. Most of those interested in football in Paderborn watch, among others, Arminia Bielefeld, who are a proper club with a history and a cracking ground.
-
Is anyone travelling from the south? Really hoping to do the games in Paderborn and Bochum.
-
Pity we're not playing my German team; Karlsruher.
No word from Frank yet, regarding the German Villans!
-

Congratulations to you and Karlsruher SC on their promotion to Bundesliga 2.
The German Villans are most likely to go to the Bochum game on the Sunday afternoon. I'm working in another part of Germany all that week, so can't go.
-

I'll probably go, from Bournemouth if flying, I might even drive.
-
The freindly against Shamrock Rovers in Dublin has been added now, on Sunday 4th August.
-
Paderborner pilsener is the best thing to come out of Paderborn.
That and the RAF flight to Lyneham on a Wednesday afternoon.
-
Germany looks like an ideal warm up,pre-season trip that many fans will be able to attend! Sadly for this guy it also coincides with a trip to NYC so it'll have to be Wycombe,Luton,Crewe & Walsall for me!!
-
Annoying that Crewe is a night game would be difficult to get there after work but I'll definitely take in Wycombe.
-
Are any of the games down in Bavaria / Black Forest area ? I love it down there

I,m looking at it. It's only a 5hr/330mile drive from here. I will wait to see if I get any good P&O ferry deals emailed thru to me.
-
Oh, and EDLuton can fuck off. If they didn't want our money when they were in the top division, I don't see why we should help them out now they're non-league. Hope they go bust.
-
Happily take the trip to crewe, only 30 minutes on the train for me from home
Maybe its part of the luke murphy deal?
-
I was thinking the Crewe game was a thankyou for Westwood and a cheers we'll have Murphy for 2 bob game too.
Im interested in what the other 2 games to be arranged could be. Maybe something to do with Bulgaria/ Celtic/ Dortmund coming to Villa Park.
-

Any of these would be great fun, especially inviting Celtic down for a Stan/Lambo love in. With a bit of luck they might even take Ireland and Bannan back north with them.
-
To the Pader Born!
-
SV Rodinghausen at Häcker- Wiehenstadion on Wednesday July 10 [ko 7pm],

-
Pity Crewe's midweek but it'll still be a good trip. Good to see Walsall back and Wycombe has the best close-to-a-station pub in the country. You can keep Luton.
-
It looks like I'll be taking my 5 year old to the Shamrock Rovers game for her 1st Villa match.
-
Sorry to be pedantic, but it's "Duisburg" if that's OK with you, Curious (may I call you "Curious"?).

Right-wing, Chelsea and Rangers-sympathising scum.
That's very unfair on Hamburg. Yes, they certainly have longstanding ties with Rangers, but that's not in itself a crime. They're a big club with very large (home and away) support and although there are undoubtedly some right-wing elements it would be wholly unfair to describe their support as right-wing in general. It's no wonder they don't like St. Pauli, but that's not necessarily for political reasons - we don't like our neighbours much either, do we? I can fully understand people's fondness for St. Pauli, but Hamburg fans might - with some justification - ask where exactly most St. Pauli fans were prior to around 1990.
To me, they're a big club with a long tradition and a proud history....sound familiar?
-
To the Pader Born!
That's pretty good, that one.
-
If I remember right, we played a friendly at Paderborn against Borussia Moenchengladbach in 1991.
Loads of Army lads at it.
-
That's a bugger the Bochum game being during the first Ashes Test. Why is nothing ever straightforward?
Anyone know any bars in Bochum that show live cricket?
-
Oh, and EDLuton can fuck off. If they didn't want our money when they were in the top division, I don't see why we should help them out now they're non-league. Hope they go bust.
Most unfair to describe it as EDLuton, pathetic really. Obviously dont know the area. As for them not wanting your money, I agree the tory chairman at the time was a tosser and trying to gain popularity, but the club is decent and didnt deserve the 30 points deduction they received.
-

They got deducted 20 points for failing for the third time in ten years to properly come out of a CVA. Basically they spent a decade or more not bothering to pay their bills and then going into CVA's to only pay a few pence in the pound to creditors. The 20 points was well deserved given that 10 points for going into administration just once is the standard.
The other ten points was for dodgy dealings - paying agents through a third party, again, deserved.
Now I would feel sorry for the fans if they didn't have such a high percentage of scumbags amongst their support. A few example of the top of my head:
Racist chanting reported at various grounds, witnessed it myself at Tamworth. "Town full of Pakis" and monkey noises at our black players.
York fans having to cower in a stand after a play-off win at Luton in 2010.
Kidderminster fan stabbed this season.
Various reports on non-league forums of supporters coaches being bricked outside Kenilworth Road.
That on top of the whole plastic pitch, ID card, away fan banning antics of the 80's make Luton pretty much the club I hate the most.
-
Good generalisation there. Leeds got let off for similar to Luton. As for the kidderminster fan stabbed this season, that was nothing to do with Luton fans, it was arguments with locals apparently away from the ground. As for reports of coaches being bricked outside the ground, I have seen nothing in the local papers about that. Dont get me wrong I am far from being a Luton fan, but to portray the club as an EDL movement is totally wrong. A number of clubs still have idiots.
-
I hope to be going to all 3 pre-season games in Germany.
I am based in Paderborn and the other 2 games are only an hour or so away.
I know that flights from Luton to Dortmund (on easyjet) are quite cheap.
There is Cityjet who run flights from London city to Paderborn.
Flybe from Birmingham to Hanover.(which is an hour an a half from paderborn)
-
I'm on a stag do in Berlin from July 10th-15th. My knowledge of Germany geography is pretty limited, time to research if these games are do-able.
-
I will be home in July and hope to make Wycombe.
-
I recall Wycombe for Stanleys first game on british soil, John Gregory was Wycombe manager and brilliant that day in allowing me and my young lad at time into the bar area. Fancy a re-run and the lad can drive :)

Rehearsal against Aston Villa
Football's calling Bochum: The Aston Villa FC from Birmingham is one week before the start of Season 2 Bundesliga to be a guest at the Castroper road. The dress rehearsal for VfL Bochum 1848 against the club from the Premier League on Sunday, 14 July kicks off at 15:30 clock in rewirpower.
"Many older VfL fan still raving about the games against England early 80s. But also for the younger followers of strength with the traditional club from the motherland of football is an interesting comparison, "said VfL board member Alleröd. 23 years ago there were up to now last encounter between the two clubs - and twice, on 5 August 1980 they separated in Bochum 1:1, four days later found the "leg" in Birmingham. Villa won 2-1 there. Having the AVFC has managed to leave the league this season, one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs of the island in the coming season, a member of England's highest league will be. Aston Villa was founded in 1874, plays since 1897 in domestic Villa Park and was both a founding member of the English Football League (1882) as well as the Premier League in 1992. With 20 trophies in local competitions, including seven British Championships and seven FA Cup triumphs, Villa is one of the four most successful English club ever. In addition, the Villans 1982 could win the European Champion Clubs' Cup with a 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich. In the same year they also won the European Super Cup against FC Barcelona (0:1 / 3:0 aet). The last major trophy in Aston Villas collection is the UI Cup in 2001. trainer of English is an old acquaintance from the Bundesliga: Paul Lambert. The Scot played from 1996 to 1997 for Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Dortmund won the Champions League and World Cup winner (1997). The most prominent actor should present the hotly sought-after Belgian international Christian Benteke be, which is currently at # 4 with 19 matches of the English top scorer. Other prominent players are the Irish Shay Given (gate), Richard Dunne and Stephen Ireland and the Dutch defender Ron Vlaar, Australian Brett Holman Offensive allrounder plus the England international Gabriel Agbonlahor and Darren Bent

I too am glad that AVFC has managed to leave the league this season, one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs of the island in the coming season, a member of England's highest league will be.
-
Can't decide whether we should pick Guzan or Given (gate).
-
Hamburg at home but preferably away please! In fact a pre season tour of Germany would be ideal!
You got your wish then.
Yes,but typical of my luck,I fly out to New York on 5th July & don't return back to Brum until 15th July!!
Sod's bloody law!!

Malaga - coached by Manuel Pellegrini - are currently sixth in Spain's La Liga.
Los Boquerones also reached the last eight of this season's Champions League before being eliminated by finalists Borussia Dortmund.

Malaga! Happy with that.
-
Do we normally play that many pre-season games? 9 sounds quite a lot.
-
Has anyone found any cheap flights to Paderborn? I've been looking all morning and can't find anything under about £200 :(

Think your better off flying to either Dortmund or Hannover. They usually average between £50 and £100.00
-
It's the Bank Hol in Ireland the weekend we play the Rovers. Could be a good one.
-
Do you think you will make it over Eamonn? if so we can try and meet up, I'm definitely going; tickets available and all that.
-
Dependent on work and finances but I hope so, Dave. Be good to see you again, Ger if he's going and any other H&Vers.
Got to love the enthusiasm of the Irish Lions: http://astonvilla.ie/shamrock-rovers-vs-aston-villa-august-2013/

The Irish Lions were fantastic when we went over there for the Bohemians game. They really do organise it well.
-

From the little sound bytes I've heard I think we'll have a stronger squad by the start of the season. So for the friendlies, they will probably gradually be coming in and we'll probably make use of the younger players in the friendlies too. In the first few friendlies we'll probably play one team in one half and another team in the other half.
-
Malaga game should be a good one. Nice to see a high profile pre-season game back at Villa Park.
-
The German teams seem a bit light for us but very happy with Malaga and pleased with the Rovers game, should be great for our Irish support!
-
Have we ever not played Walsall pre-season?!
-
Have we ever not played Walsall pre-season?!
Last year iirc.
-
I thought Dortmund might be the big show piece friendly. Obviously not this year but must be a strong possibility for future seasons.
-
Have we ever not played Walsall pre-season?!
Last time round.
-
VFL Bochum 1848 ?
They were either founded at 12 minutes to 7 or are 9 years older than Sheffield FC.

Like a lot of European clubs they are a multi-sports club, the football arm was formed in 1911 according to Wikipedia.

I wish the Malaga game was away. I could have flown to Malaga and back the same day. Fuck fuckety fuck.
-
League season starts Saturday 17th August, the week after Malaga friendly.

Has anybody made any plans for the pre-season games in Germany?
A group of us are flying out on the Thursday evening from Luton to Dortmund, travelling to Paderborn to stay overnight for the game on Friday before returning to Dortmund over the weekend and taking in the Bochum game on the Sunday. We’re then flying home on the Monday morning.
Easyjet flights from Luton (I know it’s a distance from Brum; I live in Bedfordshire fortunately) are only about £90 return, which is decent.
German beer, the sun and The Villa. I can’t wait.
-
Any ticket details announced yet for the UK based games?
-
The U-21's are at Tamworth on 20th July.
-
Might pop along.
EDIT: no I won't. It's the same day as the Wycombe game.
-
Has anybody made any plans for the pre-season games in Germany?
No. But we will do when we have had a few days not having to think about football, travel and tickets.
-
German beer, the sun and The Villa. I can’t wait.
You'll be lucky!

Haha. Well, anything's got to be better than here at the moment. Plus, when I was working in Cologne last July it was glorious so I'm that wasn't the exception!

Ok, Dave. Sorry I was only asking!
-
Strong side going to Rodney Parade for Newport Co. v Villa on Sunday 28/7, ko 3pm.

Might pop along to that if our kid fancies it.
-
In Newport? Fuck that. Its a fucking scum hole.
-

I'm tempted, haven't been to their new ground and as they got promoted won't be going their with Tamworth this season either.
-
After we come back from Germany I've been told we're playing Wycombe Wanderers, Luton Town, Crewe, Walsall, Shamrock Rovers and Malaga. Does anyone have more info on these games (dates, home/away and tickets)? Sorry but I'm getting excited!
-
Ah, I just searched on the official site and found this:

-
The thread a dozen down called "Pre-Season Matches 2013" might help ;)
So i'm merging this with it.
-
Add the 28th July, Villa play Newport County....can't wait.
-
Newport County away on Sunday July 28th I believe, as well.
If we're playing Shamrock as part of an agreement for signing Enda Stevens and Crewe as part of an agreement for signing Westwood, can we sign someone from brentford this year please? I fancy drinking in the 4 pubs in each corner of the ground.
-
Great stuff PWS, cheers!
-
In Newport? Fuck that. Its a fucking scum hole.
You're soooo right....about parts. Especially where County play, its rotten.

Luton and Walsall for me!
-
Now that the Rovers game is on at 2 I might just make it, but will have to head straight to Galway afterwards meaning there won't be any chance for imbibing before or after.
-
For those going to Newport then feel my pain. My work career started with a large glazing firm who, as well as teaching me pricing and management, insisted I learned some glazing so I knew what the guys on the road were about and up to.
First big job? The roof at Newport train station. Nigh on a month I spent in that shit tip placing and glazing the Georgian wired glass that is still there today.
I hope my glazing is shit and you get rained on if you get the train.

Keep logging in to the Irish Lions website; which is what I am doing. I'm giving it another week or so and then I'm going to get in touch with Rovers. Any further info and I'll post it here.

I should probably join that forum!
They have the dates wrong on the big fight. I have a suspicion it was New Years rather than Boxing Day. I recall their charge at change of ends at half time and kicking 7 shades of shit out of some daft Welsh twat wearing a Wales beanie hat in front of the tea bar who was trying to pick fights with all und sundry.
Lo, to be young again.
I still fucking hate Newport.
Dave - i feel an article coming on....

Most of the station has been redeveloped...but you're Georgian glazing is still going strong
-
I went through the station the other day on my way to Cardiff. The roof is looking a bit shabby now.
There was a peculiarly shaped building opposite which wasn't there in my day.

Want some help with it, I have some more recent experience of them.

We can share. I will do my older reasons for disliking them and you can do the more up to date part.

That's strange shaped building is the train station. The building further down which would of been the station ha been redeveloped into council offices.

Is that due to the football side of things or the general public living there?

For my part it's football and specifically visiting going away with Tamworth to watch them at three different grounds, all of them horrible, and encountering their lovely fans on several occasions.
There is something about the fans of ex-league clubs (either re-formed or not), almost to a club they have fans that are just annoying. The exceptions in my experience have been York and (surprisingly) Aldershot.

Fair enough. A few of my old school colleagues ( won't call them friends ) go and watch the county a lot. Some of them are nice guys...the majority though are pissed up mouthy thugs, typical Football Factory yobs.
-
Still, as bad as Newport fans might be, Merthyr fans are much, much worse.
-
Any news on the Luton tickets?
-
They're giving us tickets? That's nice of them. Lovely club.
-

Merthyr is rough. I was pissed as a fart and can still remember how iffy a place it was for an away fan.
I hate Newport ever since they beat Rovers 1-0 in the FAC 1st round at the Vic. The were in the original Div 3 iirc, and we battered them and they scored a spawny goal. They had about 20 fans, who were in the terrace bit in front of the seats. After the game they got steamed and you could see them trying to climb in the seats. Still, remains one of my fave ever game purely for atmosphere. Nothing like being in a non league ground that is more than 2K over capacity.
-
have I missed any news on when Luton tix will be available?

Just seen the pre season friendlies line up some interesting games in Germany and a few low key games here against Luton /Crewe and the big one at Villa Park against Malaga minus the new Man City manager !

have I missed any news on when Luton tix will be available?
I know that Luton aren't selling them to their own season ticket holders yet, but that might not affect what's available from VP.
I'll be there with a good friend who's had his ST at Kenilworth Road for a few years, now, and who has promised not to riot.

Love ya Mr Sox.

Have to say I love the tradition of playing Walsall each pre-season. Must help them out with a few quid and it's a nice local away day.
Have they ever beaten us ?

More times than we've beaten them I think. We used to never win there but we've won the last few.

Me and a mate are going over. There were quite a few non irish there when we played Bohemians so i'd imagine there will be a few.

.
Clampy does Crewe , very mind boggling Indeed ;)
-
Crewe like a local derby for me, 25 minutes on the train on a Friday night with me 10 year old lad.
Should be a good evening
-
Wycombe on Saturday and Luton on Tuesday works out perfectly for me.
I'm going to stay down there and walk the final 60 miles of the Grand Union canal into London in between the two games. That will complete me walking all of Brindleys "Grand Cross" canal system - Grand Union/ B'ham-Fazeley/ B'Ham-Worcester/ Trent-Mersey.
-
Crewe like a local derby for me, 25 minutes on the train on a Friday night with me 10 year old lad.

I've never been to Gresty Road (or whatever it's called now).

Once was enough- nailbiting fa cup tie in which we came from 2 down to win 3-2 back in the days of sir graham.

To which his half-time teamtalk was along the lines of "Right, you lot have got us into this mess. Now bloody well go out there and get us out of it".
-
The Shamrock Rovers tickets went on sale today.
Tried to book on Ticketmaster but it wouldn't let me book 1 Adult and 1 Kids ticket.
Rang the Rovers up and booked them no problem, total price €23 and saved myself a booking fee so up yours Ticketmaster.

I'd forgot about that Malaga freindly.

I'd forgot about that Malaga freindly.
Yes I'd forgotten about that too. It might help make up for the fact that I'm annoyed to find out the away ame at Newport is only for development squad so probably won't bother with that now

I didn't know that about the Newport game. My ticket's already ordered, so I'll still go and see how good the young uns are

Yes although some are listed on the away friendlies fixture list/ ticketing site, this was the piece I saw yesterday on the OS.....
Young guns to play five friendlies, including trips to Newport and Tamworth.
Villa's development squad will play five pre-season friendly matches as they gear up for the new campaign.
Gordon Cowans - who will be assisted this term by former club captain Stiliyan Petrov - takes his team to Enfield Town for a friendly clash on Saturday July 13 [kick-off 3pm].
Four days later, on Wednesday July 17, the Villa young guns face Boldmere St Michaels at the local non-league outfit's Church Road ground [7.30pm].
The Lamb Ground is Villa's next destination on Saturday July 20 [3pm] for a fixture against Blue Square Premier side Tamworth.
Then there is an exciting trip to Football League newcomers Newport County.
Cowans' team head to Rodney Parade to face last season's Blue Square Premier play-off winners on Sunday July 28 [3pm].
The busy pre-season schedule is rounded off on Wednesday August 7 against Hinckley United - Villa's regular home for reserve and U21 league games.
The clash at the Greene King Stadium kicks off at 7.30pm.
...... So if you have tickets for any of those you'll see Sid and STAN but with the development squad. Although you may also get a glimpse of Ireland, Bent, Given etc !!!
-
Then there is an exciting trip to Football League newcomers Newport County.
Blimey, how dull must your life be if you find a trip to a rugby ground in Newport exciting?

Exciting for the kids to pit their wits against a league side i guess , compared to the run of the mill poor fodder on offer at the lamb ;)
-
I'm not arguing with that!
Still, after Next Gen games at some of the biggest stadiums in Europe I doubt Rodney Parade will make them come in their pants.
I see Newport are charging £15-17 for this reserve team friendly as well.
-
I expect thy will bracket it as aston villa with tiny writing below about it being the youth side.
-
Hope the pitch is OK when we play at Wycombe.
Wanderers’ pre-season fixture with Reading has been called off due to the Adams Park playing surface not being ready for action.
Gareth Ainsworth’s men were set to face the Championship outfit on Saturday 13th July but the recent poor weather has caused a delay in the pitch reaching a playable standard, despite the best efforts of the club’s groundstaff.
The club are, however, extremely confident that the surface will be ready for the friendly with Premier League side Aston Villa on Saturday 20th July (k.o. 3pm).

No problem Dave.
My tickets arrived today leaving me with one very excited 5 year old in my house.
Hopefully she will be as excited when her new brother or sister arrives over (hopefully) the next few days.
-
£10 to watch the first team at home. £8-12 to watch them away. £15-17 to watch the reserves at Newport. Some clubs deserve to get into trouble.
-
Got my ticket for Walsall sorted.
-
Crewe like a local derby for me, 25 minutes on the train on a Friday night with me 10 year old lad.
Should be a good evening
I have tickets for me and my son for this one!

Love the enthusiasm of the Irish Villains. Would be back over if I wasn't down to me last tenner.

Update from the Newport county site today quotes "Villa Tickets Going Well
Friday July 05, 2013
Tickets for the Aston Villa game at Rodney Parade on Sunday 28th July (3pm) which went on sale on Wednesday are selling briskly. Sales have so far reached 800 for the eagerly anticipated game for which Villa have indicated will bring a First team squad. "
Different from the reports from our site !!?

I turned up at the Stick & Wicket for Villa's pre-season game v Walsall Phoenix today. 4-4 draw. I felt Hendrie took his goals well and Sid ran the midfield. Morley didn't exceed walking pace offering little, neither did McNaught who now has only 6 weeks to shift about three stone of weight. Bremner kept the ball tidily, Small topped a decent game with a fluky goal but Spink needs to take a look at himself letting in four against lower league opposition.

Mug that I am, I've just bought my ticket for the Malaga game

Paul Lambert insists his players are in for an "extremely tough" week in Germany.
Lambert says it's a case of work, work, work as the manager aims to build up fitness levels and get the team into a pattern of play for the coming term.
He's a strong believer that an enormous effort in pre-season is vital in order to get the body right for the strenuous rigours of a Barclays Premier League campaign.
Lambert is relishing the three games - SV Rodinghausen on Wednesday, SC Paderborn on Friday and VfL Bochum on Sunday.
But the boss stresses that training each day is of paramount importance.
He said: "We've headed to Germany and it will be extremely tough, especially if the weather gets the way it could go.
"There will be three difficult games out there too.
"But the priority for us is to work.
"It is not a resort where you think the lads go to enjoy themselves. It is to work and if they do that and do it really hard and keep it going then they'll come back to England and they've got games here which will stand them in good stead.
"The main thing for us is we don't get any injuries first and foremost, get into a way of playing and be ready for that first game.
"You've got to be fit.
"Modern day football dictates that you have to be fit to get around the pitch which is important.
"You've got to be fit to play a really tough season plus cup games and everything that goes with it.
"Fitness is important in football, there is no doubt about that."

Villa's development squad have added a friendly against Boston United to their pre-season schedule.
Gordon Cowans will take his young side to the Jakemans Stadium for a match against the Pilgrims on Sunday August 4.
The clash with the Blue Square North outfit will kick-off at 3pm.
The development squad will begin their preparations for the 2013-14 campaign at Enfield Town on Saturday [3pm].
Four days later, on Wednesday July 17, the Villa young guns face Boldmere St Michaels at the local non-league outfit's Church Road ground [7.30pm].

anyone going to wycombe in a couple of weeks should note they were supposed to be playing reading this saturday, but it was called off because their pitch isn't ready. i'd keep an eye out!
Wanderers cannot take any risk with the surface as they kick off the 2013/14 campaign with two home games in the space of just four days – Morecambe in League 2 and Leicester City in the Capital One Cup.
The club are, however, extremely confident that the surface will be ready for the friendly with Premier League side Aston Villa on Saturday 20th July (k.o. 3pm).
Supporters who have already purchased tickets for the Reading fixture can either upgrade to the Villa game for free or should contact the ticket office for other options. Call 01494 441118 or visit Adams Park in person.
The club would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

edit: posted by someone who wishes he could be there himself!

Have the club posted the actual squad which has travelled to Germany? As in, how many have gone, who's in the group? Just curious, especially to see which of the younger lads have been included.

I hope they manage to rid the Tallaght Stadium of the foul stench before The Villa come to town.

1 adult and 1 child. Please PM me if of interest.

Ordered my ticket for the Malaga game last week. For anyone who usually parks at King Edwards the school car park will be open for that game (I emailed Helen at the PA to confirm).
As an aside - great that Villa are live streaming the pre-season games, but where can I get 'legal'/pay for live streaming of away games during the season? I usually watch on First Row Sports but in the news last week there was an item about trying to get the free streaming sites shut down so may have to start paying. Scandalous!

I'm fairly sure there aren't any. Its a case of go to the game, or pay shitloads of money for a Sky/BT subscription (where you'll get half a dozen away games a season if your lucky).
Kinda sucks for those of us who can't make it to many away games because its so hard to get onto the away scheme if you aren't a season ticket holder....
-
I get to see the away games when I'm not working at a couple of the local pubs in our area.
They have some motorised satellite dish which picks up every game I believe ! :D
-
shagbag, im going to miss the Crewe game (I live in Crewe) as im on holiday. Bastard typical
-
My Walsall tickets have arrived, get in there! Disproportionately optimistic and excited about the first chance to see the new boys!

Walk down the high street to the bus station, then get a bus to the top of the hill. It's too far to walk.

Is it possible to get into the away scheme at all without being a Season Ticket Holder?
Considering it was / is limited to 1000 people, surely it is only right that Season Ticket Holders get the first pick?
-
Boldmere St Michaels 1-3 Villa - 55 mins: A flurry of changes for Villa - Brad Watkins, Tomas Zazrivec, Daniel O'Brien, Khalid Abdo and Thomas Strain on for Benji Siegrist, Henry Cowans, Jerell Sellars, Callum Robinson and Jack Grealish.
-
Boldmere 2-6 Villa - GOAL - 84 mins: It finished 6-2 to Villa here last season and we could have a repeat on our hands. Thomas Strain has bagged his second and perhaps the pick of the bunch - a stunning 25-yard volley.
-
Finished 3-6 to the Villa babbies.

S/T holders get first priority, followed by people who have attended x-number of away fixtures, then x-number of home etc etc, but what it means in practice is that only season ticket holders really get to away games.
It is without a doubt the fairest way to allocate tickets and I'm not complaining about the system. I just don't like how now that the streaming sites are getting shut down those of us who for work and/or financial reasons cannot go to many games have to make do with just the highlights.
Although I suppose back in the mists of time before the internet thats how it was. I guess I'll have to lump it.
EDIT: Not away scheme, just getting away tickets in general

Yeah I just re-read what I posted and it turns out I'm talking out of my backside. DISREGARD

^^^^Is that Henry Cowans any relation to Sid?
His son.
-
How is son of Sid progressing? I like the name Henry Cowans. Not only because of his dad but it also resonantes of 1890's players and success.
-
I like his name because it sounds like Henry Cow, Fred Frith's band.

He seems to be highly rated but I didn't think he shone, that could be as he was playing next to the pick of our players, Johnson and Grealish. A little lightweight and his control let him down a few times.
-
Thomas Strain has bagged his second and perhaps the pick of the bunch - a stunning 25-yard volley.
I was chatting to his Dad, he was as proud as punch and rightly so, he scored to very good goals.

Are PeterWithe and PeterWithe'sShin like our Bent and Benteke?

Yeah to see him looking so well, back in Villa colours. I noticed young Johnson has filled out a bit since i last saw a photo of him. Be interesting to see if he gets close to the first team squad this season.

I thought that as well. His hair is growing back nicely after his treatment, and he looks very healthy. Long may it continue!

Apparently we have sold around 1200 tickets for Wycombe.
"The Hour Glass pub, Sands, High Wycombe close to the ground is happy to accept away fans especially families, those travelling by train all Pubs in the town are happy to accept away/home fans. The club are also making a large marquee at the ground available to away fans for alcohol sales, please be aware alcohol is not available inside the away stand at Adams Park
A return bus service runs from Train station to Adams Park but is limited to 1 double decker bus"

David Evans was the MP who made Tebbitt look like a wet.
-
Had a quick look regarding Wycombe, it seems like the ground is a very long way from the train station and that it is at the back of an Industrial Estate; very strange.
If anyone knows any good pubs (preferably real ale type places, that won't be "full of Villa" then a pm would be gratefully accepted and appreciated.
-
Anybody even thinking about walking it, from Wycombe
station to the ground tomorrow ''Good Luck'' with that !!
-
1 thing ive noticed in our 2 friendlys so far is how many of our "chav" element of fans its attracted.
I know the main reason is probably it's only £10 but thought it was quite embarrassing really watching people trying to invade the pitch at Wycombe along & then onto Luton letting off those stupid smoke bomb/flare things!!!
And whoever started singing "I don't care about Luton" get a life
-
Definitely a high chav element at Wycombe and on the train to Burton last year as I recall.
I also wonder if these people would be afraid to act like such knobs at Villa Park with 35000+ fans there, but feel they can get away with it in these smaller numbers.
-
It hasn't always been like this at pre-season friendlies but certainly seems to be the case nowadays. Not helped by Villa and Blues playing at Wycombe and Oxford respectively on the same day.

It's the curse of Sky. Everything gets hyped out of all proportion, including kit designs and pre-season friendlies.

What I did'nt get about Wycombe on Saturday are the ones who thought it was a good idea to watch the game standing right behind the goal.

They wanted their pictures together on Facebook.

And what fun they were having pushing over the advertising hoardings and the cushioned filled blocks.
Over they go, back up again, over again, ad infinitum. It must have been just like being at Tumble Tots.

In fairness, the organisation was shit. We all had tickets with the usual row and seat number on them. However, everyone just said "sit where you like, it's unreserved". If you're in a big group it could be pretty hard to find seats together. We eventually managed to find three together on the opposite side of the stand to the seats we were allocated.
I reckon many fans just decided to give up looking and stand up instead. Not helped by the fact that there were hardly any stewards. Also, again in fairness, nobody was standing in front of the side of the stand where the wheelchair users were sitting. So I don't think the standers were too bad a lot really.

Bit of confusion at Crewe last night too.
Steward insisted we sat in allocated seats. Fine.
Some folk had clearly sat where they wanted ignoring seat numbers etc. I moved from row A to row B, then to row D. A few prickly fu**ers to say the least!
Two people turned up a bit late and had exactly the same tickets as the couple in front of me. Steward said "Dunno wot's happened there - sit where you like." No places for them to sit and we were all standing anyway, doing that singing, clapping thing. A bit tense and a few angry moans and looks for a while but all happy after 2 minutes when we scored!

Well done to the lads walking out the Wycombe ground with a large green triangular support cushion above their heads singing "We're Aston Villa, we take what we want ".

Ticket procured for Sunday. Hopefully have a couple of drinks in town afterwards, although I'm not keen on heading to the pub organised by the Irish lions.....

Will you be in Murray's Saturday night Ger?
-
Unlikely, Dave, have a few bits on this weekend. Presume you'll be at the match?
Incidentally, I really hope the McGrath idea has been shelved following recent events. A pub that opens at 8 in the morning is not a healthy environment for him to be in.

I'm going Ger and hope to be in Murray's Saturday night hoping to meet a few H & V members. Are you Going Mel?
-
What was the Wycombe score?

2-2

Dickheads. But then again it looked a bit less idiotic in the away ends than in some seasons at Walsall, and they weren't chucking beer at each other outside the George V this year for once.
