After 33 games in the past three seasons we have only been on about a point a game before going on to secure safety.

Next season I genuinely think we will be on about 45 points with 33 games gone with a late surge such as this helping to push us into the top seven.

The crowds are back. We are an improving side. Everton are changing manager, United are changing manager, Spurs might lose Bale we have a good manager. We could find ourselves benefiting from upheaval elsewhere to secure a quick return to European football.

Swansea will drop a bit aswell through being in the Europa league especially as I think they'll have a good run in that.

The premier league is very very average below the top 7, you don't need to spend 50m to finish 8th for example.

WBA will probably finish 8th on 48 points, previous seasons we've finished in the bottom half with that points total.

I'm quietly confident next season. The attack is class, midfield trio is almost permanent and the defence just needs an addition or two. We just need people to rotate in as required as injuries / persistant playing will come into force sooner or later. Top half if we improve the squad and apart from one or two, Lambert can pick him.

We aren't far from a more than decent side. I'm really hoping that with another years experiences for the kids, as well as the boost of confidence of staying up, as well as the quality of performances since HT vs Newcastle that we could be a bit tasty to watch. We've already seen in glimpses of what this side is capable of once they have a bit of confidence.

This^^^

Also, Lambert teams tend to finish strongly -  I wouldnt go expecting us to replicate this sort of form all season long.

That said, with the squad as it stands I'd say 10th-15th.  A few additions (and holding on to The Beast of B6) and I'd say 8th-10th easily

Not sure, but I can't wait for August.  There's a lot of goodwill behind this team, neutrals and some of the press like what we're trying to do, which is miles away from the way we were despised a year or two back.

If we don't invest at all I fancy this squad as it is to finish top 10 quite easily. They've matured over the season.  Get rid of the dross, and invest in some real quality and I think we can push for top 6 again.

I expect the most interesting Premier League season for a while next year. Two new managers at the Manchester clubs, a likely return for Mourinho to Chelsea are already interesting, but I'm very excited about how we will shape up next year. Looking at the teams around us, I am confident that with a bit of experience and (hopefully) another Benteke-esk wildcard, we'll finish about 8th. And Wembley.
Title: Re: Where will we finish next season?

Personally think it will be Manchester, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool who will occupy all 6 spots for a good few years yet. Evertons position could be up for grabs by someone and with the right kind of signings.

I went for 8th-10th...Ill be happy with that for 3 or 4 seasons just to get us back on our feet again.

I'd be happy with a season of progress where we finish 8th - 10th and never once have to look over our shoulders.  This coupled with some clean sheets and, assuming we don't win either of them, cup exits that don't make us national laughing stocks.

I certainly think we will be "too good to go down" next season: all of the promoted clubs will struggle, perhaps even one of those seasons when at least two of them go straight back down.  Stoke are a busted flush and I don't think Pullis can re-invest himself tactically, Norwich and Albion's end to the season suggest a difficult season ahead - and I'd be worried if I was a Fulham fan.  Southampton could go one of two ways - as could either of the North East clubs.

At the other end of the table, I think it'll all be business as usual despite the managerial changes.  Man City and Chelsea will give their new manager mega-bucks to spend and Moyes will keep the momentum at United going with what will still be Ferguson's team.  Arsenal, as per usual, will flatter to deceive, but will still have enough to finish fourth.  Spurs and Liverpool will battle for 5th and are the most likely to sneak 4th if any of the others falter.

So mid-table will come down to a battle between us, Everton, West Ham and Swansea - plus whichever of Southampton, Newcastle or Sunderland has an improved season.

If Gabby, Benteke and Weimann build on this season's form and we strengthen in the various key departments, I feel we will be in the Liverpool/Spurs/ Arsenal territory of battling for places between 4th and 6th.  We have too good a strike force to be mid-table and the lowest we will finish will be 8th. (I hope!)

Title: Re: Where will we finish next season?
Post by: Greg N'Ash on May 15, 2013, 09:01:09 AM
The problem you have is if you name what you think is our current strongest first XI, as soon as you take one or two names out, then it starts to look extremely iffy. A few new faces and very few injuries then i can see us getting between 9th-12th. If we don't get the reinforcements and lose a few players injured then we could be bumping along the bottom again.
Title: Re: Where will we finish next season?
Post by: Matt Collins on May 16, 2013, 09:06:17 AM
It's too early to say. Massively dependent on keeping our best players and making good signings. Put a half decent defence in the current side and I think we could get top half- not in a 'comfortable top 8 all season' way unless there's a really dramatic defensive improvement

I doubt the teams coming out of the championship this year will be as strong as for the last two years (Southampton, west ham, Swansea and Norwich). I fancy all three to be bottom 5 material and at least one of the teams in brackets will struggle too - probably Norwich and hopefully west brom will struggle a bit without lukaku.

So it should certainly be possible to avoid bumping around the bottom all season. And if we're going to be mid table, I'll be much happier for it to involve the sort of football we've been playing recently - when compared to the Gregory days for example
Title: Re: Where will we finish next season?

In general we don't really do mid table at Villa, do we? Either top six or bottom six, for as long as i can remember with a few exceptions. Next season its back to top six i hope, but obviously as mentioned by others, we need to see what happens. I trust Lambert to get right. A couple of good signings, keep Benteke and i believe we can literally go anywhere next season! Sod all this top 8-10 cautious optimism bollocks!
Title: Re: Where will we finish next season?
Post by: Toronto Villa on May 17, 2013, 01:58:59 PM
7th or 8th. Our form in the second half of the season leads me to believe that we will beat the teams we should more often than not. When you couple that with the games we've literally given away from winning positions mostly due to comical defending then you have to think by fixing some of that with some good signings we can finish comfortably in an upper mid table position.
Title: Re: Where will we finish next season?
Post by: Can Gana Be Bettered!?!? on May 17, 2013, 01:59:07 PM
7th to 15th I reckon. We're not going to join the top 6 and Liverpool, but we're as good/bad (however you see it) as anyone in the league from West Brom down (with Moyes leaving Everton, they'll be in that category).

However, so long as we play to win games and it's enjoyable, I am more than happy to keep buying my season ticket. This season has been more fun than the last two I think (possibly more than that (some football under MON was dire)).

Newcastle were a surprise package knocking on the door the other year so you never know. It remains to be seen how we get on in our bread and butter games but our front 3 will always give us a chance. There seems to be more options with the players we've brought in, we seem more organised and the midfield are doing a good job of protecting the defence. After the shit we've been through in the last few years, things are looking up and this season looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.

Home form will be the key if we are to make real progress up the league this season.  Can't help but wonder if we are still better suited to playing away than at home and are still lacking that player that can open up teams that are set up to defend at Villa Park.

My more serious answer is 8th.

I still think this is about where we'll be. To finish much higher we'll need a good following wind with injuries, especially for the likes of Gabby, Delph, Benteke.

I think 7th to 9th.

Between 6th and 12th assuming we maintain the performances of the last two games and we don't lose anyone in the transfer windows.

If we beat Liverpool, I reckon we could really push on Ron-Saunders-style.

Not really, it takes about ten games for the league to take shape I am not a fan of getting carried away after a couple good displays.

I am confident we will be in no danger of going down.  The strikers already have had a good start, the younger players are improving and if a few of the new buys prove good then that it going to improve us no end.

Long term I see us becoming a top six club again under this manager, but for this season I am happy finishing half way up.

If Everton lose Fellaini and Baines I reckon 7th is definitely up for grabs. Think everyone knows who the top six will be.

Our main challengers are likely to be Everton, west ham and Southampton, in my view. Southampton's academy must be the best in the country at the moment: bale, Walcott, AOC, shaw, lallana. If we could improve ours to that level, we'd be in a great place.

Top 7, maybe sneaking into 6th, depending on injuries.

I mentioned to a Chelsea fan I work with that I thought we would easily be top 8. He laughed and offered me the line at top half. £50 is now booked, they better not let me down

9th/10th. If we could sort out the defence it could be higher but I expect the lack of clean sheets will cost us a couple of places.

10th-12th.  Will struggle against teams who sit back.

I'd go along with that.  Until and unless we can keep a clean sheet we need 2 or more goals to win a game, so we'll have games like Saturday where it just doesn't happen for us in front of goal.

Currently 9th, GD 0. After last season, if we finish with that then I'll be satisfied.
Anything better than that, including a cup, is a a bonus.

Have a look at the predictions here, scroll down to the Villa - not sure who John Ray is, is he on here?

We can get as high as 7th or 8th, but only if we can start keeping clean sheets every now and then. We can't keep on having to score one just to get a draw.
