Just watched Football Focus and he said he followed Villa as a child. His mum bought him an 82' Villa shirt.
Nice one PL.

No way?! This is excellent news. He did seem to have a certain affinity with the club as we have discussed in recent days.
I'm sickened that I missed this interview, if anybody can find a link (BBC vids usually don't play in ROI) can you post here? Cheers.
-
He's kept that quiet! Good to know though and hopefully he can take us back to those happier times in 82 :)
-
I gathered he was Celtic through and through but obviously not. Adds a little sexiness for me when your manager has an affection for the club from his childhood days.

It was literally only about 4 minutes long but im sure it will appear on Youtube in next coming days

I've always loved the way he talks about the club. He always addresses us by name and never follows the modern trend of football club managers who always address the club they are managing as "the football club" when talking about them.
His attitude and body language towards the supporters always seem genuine to me, I love that attitude, I really do; which is one of the reasons I desperately want him to do well with us.
-
His mom bought him the 82 euro kit.......bloody glory-hunter ;)
-

Well, he could still have been a big Celtic fan and followed Villa as his English team...

I guess...just kind of thought you get the Scots following Liverpool, Man.Utd etc

Snap.
Seems such a petty thing, but it always used to piss me off when MON came out with that. It's Villa or THE Villa.
Might just be PR, but following some of the previous managers who had a penchant for foot in mouth moments, it's welcome.
-
I saw that, this bloke is definitely winning me over more and more.
-
Pat Murphy tweeted about this earlier, I waited for the interview to make my mind up.
I'm deeply suspicious when managers come out with this kind of thing but the fact that Lambert didn't say this when he came here or even used it to his advantage when we were playing so badly is to his credit.
-
Yeah, I'm cynical about this sort of stuff too...I want to see the shirt!
-
In fairness, we were kind of a big deal then. We picked up a few floating fans around the country dating back to that period - but not to the extent that the North West clubs did, obv.
The purchase of a shirt might just have been that, mind. Plenty of people would buy replica jerseys for clubs outside of their own league with no real emotional attachment to said club.
As others have said, if he was a Villa fan, I'm sure it would have come out before now.
-
I'm a bit suspicious in all honesty, seems such an easy thing to say.
-

It might not fit him now.
-
Well if it does, then he's rumbled!

Just watched it, it's only about Benteke, doesn't mention the villa shirt. :-(
-

Indeed we were. Mother buys the kit of the current European champions for her 8 year old kid. Happens every year. To me it's not a massive revelation, it's just a nice coincidence really.

Agreed.

You calling me a liar ;-)

I also watched the Football Focus interview.
I assumed it was something about kilts. However having re-watched with subtitles, yes he did say his mother bought him a Villa shirt.

Ha ha no, it's not the full interview.
-
How odd that he never mentioned this when he took over or since. Adds to his low-profile and no interest in making a fuss I guess.
-
Come on Villa!

ITSOTP
-
He will be showing off the tattoo on his ankle next.
-
He said he keeps things to himself but he is a villa fan good enough for me, he does like to celebrate a goal like a fan would

Snigger
-
He's one of us, brilliant.
-
If he is he is. I don't care. He is employed at the moment to make the best of what he can as manager of AVFC. Avoiding relegation this season, no more cup humilations next season and a safe mid table position will do nicely. Whilst moving (if at all possible) the deadwood on and findings some more bargains to progress the team further
-
Does anyone know what actually went on at Norwich, seems to be incredibly bad blood there now.
-
Whether he's a genuine fan or not (which is hard to believe), he knows the tradition, history and expectations of Aston Villa...and he seems genuinely honoured to be manager.
-
Justin Rose is (almost) one of us too...
(for non-golfers, he's one of the best players in the world and was instrumental in us winning the Ryder Cup last year)
from his twitter ...
Justin Rose @JustinRose99 13h
RT @glen76stephens @JustinRose99 Who do you support Justin, surely not Chelsea!
>> yep, sorry!
Soft spot for Villa too. Huge week for them
-
I don't care if he is a fan or not. I just want him to be a great manager. If he can do the managing we can do the fanning!
-
Checked bbc iplayer web site :( nothing

When he first hit the scene he claimed he was a Villa fan. Now he's Chelsea with a soft spot for the Villa.
You can change your golf clubs but not your football team.

We will probably never know,
but Charlie Nicholas also said that he had heard there was stuff going on even this week in the background,
and he thought Lambert had not been treated to well by Norwich, he obviously has more contacts than we do so something has gone on for sure
All seems a bit non Norwich to me, probably two sides to the story as always as Lambert does come over a bit stubborn at times
-
I think it should be noted that in the interview he again stated about no sentiment in football and that dortmond changed his life. I am of the opinion he had a few strips of various successful teams growing up. I have bayern, barca and real jerseys and will get the dortmond one - which is ace ! if they win the champions league but i bleed Villa.
Anyway fair play Lambert he seemed very humble and a little embarrassed when asked. The fact is he followed our progress and recognised our greatness!
-

Delia got pissed a couple of years ago and that's been about it for the last 1500 years.

I think that sums it up nicely, especially the highlighted bit!

Another semi final and smashing the champions on their own patch on the way would be nice though...

Too right.
This 'soft spot' bollocks and changing your mind renders your opinion on football utterly null and void.
