Title: History/nerdy-type questions
Post by: Martyn Smith on April 22, 2013, 10:27:31 AM
If we win tonight we will relegate two teams simultaneously, i.e. QPR and Reading.

Have we ever relegated two teams as the result of one match before? I certainly can't remember.

And if we should do that, then, given our last fixture it is possible that we could relegate all three teams this season. Have we ever done *that* before?

Interesting stat although i doubt very much it will come to fruition.

We could even relagate two teams and ourselves. Have to keep things the Villa Way after all.

I haven't seen this mentioned on SSN today.

Apparently Man Utd can win the league though.

Off the top of my head the only side I can remember us relegating is Newcastle. If I remember correctly the year Coventry went down other results would have sent them down anyway.

Hadn't we sent boro down too the week before we did the barcodes? Not entirely certain of all the maths regarding others results, but I vaguely recall that they needed to beat us to have any chance of staying up.

They weren't relegated that day, but the draw was generally regarded as not enough to keep them up, and so it proved.

That's the way I like it. Keep the pressure on them and away from us.

I'd like to share your optimism, but if there's one quality you have to admire in Ferguson's Yanited, it's their ability to ignore huge pressure.

They had to win by something like 5 goals

We've gotten quite a few Newcastle managers the sack, but not two teams relegated at the same time. I'll believe it when it happens regarding our easy win away to Manure though.

TS news just said both - that 2 would go down if Villa won and the obvious one.

It was a lot closer then. They never needed just three points from five games to win the league.

It is possible that we could relegate Wigan just as they arrive at Wembley for the cup final. Surely no team's been relegated hours before the biggest moment in their history before!

As for relegating other teams, in my mind we sent the Blues down by beating Liverpool a couple of years back. It felt like it that day anyway!

Didn't we practically relegate the Noses when we beat them 3-1 in 2006? I recall it being an 'us or them' scenario.

Middlesbrough lost the League and FA Cup Finals as well as getting relegated in one season didn't they?

That was when the FA cup final was held a week after the league finished, so they were down by then for a week.  And The league cup final is always too early for any league issues to be decided.

IN answer to DeKuip's question, I don't think so as league games are usually and rightly not played on cup final day.

If I have worked it out right we could relegate Wigan earlier in the day they are in the cup final if we take 7 more points from the United, Sunderland, Norwich and Chelsea games than they take from their games against Spurs, Albion and Swansea.

'Practically' is the word - neither of us were safe after the game, I think Milan Baros even said that in his post-match interview, but it doomed Blues. In the end they finished four points away from safety, and I think our game against them was the 34th/35th that season?

Was that when Portsmouth went on their run? They were the team inbetween us and Blues.

Yes, I think it was. They were relegated on the day we travelled to Liverpool, by virtue of Portsmouth winning at Wigan or somewhere like that. Think we lost 2 or 3-1. I was there, and very drunk.

Bit of a weird question but probably right for this thread....when did we last win a game on Sky when Alan Parry has been commentating as he was tonight?

Seems to me we never win when I hear his voice on our games so a bit of a jinx commentator.

Monday 4th May, 2009: Villa 1 Hull 0 (also 52nd anniversary of us last winning the F.A. Cup, oh, and my 24th wedding anniversary!)

Liverpool in August 2009 was a monday night so that's a more recent one. Can't recall a recent one at VP but then don't think we've played that monday on a monday.

Ah, I was in France for that one, so that explains it. The Hull one, were they relegated by that result? I seem to remember some controversy surrounding it.

No that was the season Newcastle went down at VP.

The mad game was Hull away when a last minute penalty was correctly overruled.

Yeah, the 1-0 at Hull was a Gabby shot into the roof of the net I think.

They weren't relegated that year though and the game was in December.

Anyway, it is still possible we could relegate both Reading and QPR. It will happen if they draw with each other, Wigan lose and we avoid defeat against Mussoliniland.

We beat Sunderland 100 years ago this week 1-0.

I thought it was an own goal?

And then the lino gave a penalty when it hit the bar, Barry ran over and had a word, and the ref overruled it.

It was nearly a century after that until the next time the top two in the league met in the FA Cup Final.

It appears we've merged two games against Hull in this discussion.
