A thought occurred to me the other day when Andi Weimanns miss, v WHU, was brought up.
What If he had scored?
Obvious, I hear you say, we'd have won 3-1. Yes, it might seem fairly certain we'd have won. But would we have give our recent luck?
The other scenario is this:
Weimann scores.
Instead of going into a shell, he'd have been buzzing.
We may have even scored a second before half time, but we'll keep it at 1-0
Here's where it get's interesting:
Let's say the second half starts as it did.
Substitution time.
Dawkins for Bowery? Yes.
Bent for Weimann? At that particular time, probably not.
History then changes.
Bent would not have cleared of the line, 1-1
West Ham would then have been on a high, we're under pressure, the nerves appear.
I leave you to finish it off ;)
Hindsight? Probably the most important miss of the season
I'd like to think that it would have been the catalyst to a big score to us.
-
I can see your logic. What might have been if he has missed against Man U at the same end of the ground ?
-
Title of thread should be what if and then we can go into a parrallel universe where as we never appointed TSM and beating WHU meant we entered the champions league places?
-
If he'd have scored against Everton is the major IF for me.....
-
Or Stoke
-
However he has been one of the shining lights this season
-
Players don't become exempt from being substituted just because they've scored a goal. Especially one that would have been scored an hour before the sub was made.
-
If he'd have scored than everything that happened afterwards in the game would have been different and nobody knows how it would have panned out.
You could ask 'what if' about any incident in any game and spend the rest of your time creating fantasy matches in your head, which is all this is.

what if your aunt was your uncle ?.....

Yep.

More to the point what if had scored the sitter header he missed when at 2-1, they would have had their momentum then stopped
-
If he didn't fumble that one over the line v Fulham last season...

Totally agree.
Basically what I'm saying is, that he shouldn't beat himself up over it.
-

Agree, John.
It's just a hypothetical example. If Weimann had been playing well, Lambert may have delayed the switch.
For me, Bent's clearance was as good as him scoring at the other end.
-
I often wonder what would've happened if we'd have bought Teddy Sheringham instead of Tony Cascarino.

FFS, It's a light hearted, hypothetical scenario.
Don't take it so matter of factly!
The lads probably had nightmares over it, and he shouldn't, because in the end we won.

Should have bought both, they were a team

Biggest one for me is April 10th 1993.

Is that the day you got married ;D
-
If Ronald Koeman had got sent off for felling Platt would England have beaten Ireland in the last 16 in USA 1994.
-
I have heard that this is the basis of Back to the Future IV.
-
Just think, what if Ireland this season ran around a bit more and gave just a little bit of a shit. We might possibly be in with a chance of Europe now.

10th April 1993 should be etched into every Villa fan's memory as 'a day that will live in infamy'!

That is the last game I went to until I started taking the children in 2005/2006. A watershed in many ways.

If we had but world enough and time
This coyness mistress would be no crime
I would spend a thousand years to adore each breast
And a considerably longer amount for all the rest
But time's winged chariot is ever at our back
And its long skanky finger will go smack, smack, smack
The grave's a fine and private place
But none I think do there embrace
So let us take all our sweetness and wrap it up into one ball
And thus, though we cannot make our sun stand still
Yet we shall make him run!

I doubt very much that he's had nightmares over it. It isn't the first bad miss he's made and it won't be the last.
The same could be said for every striker, ever, in the history of football.
You could make a hypothetical scenario about every single kick in a game. Change one thing and entire game changes afterwards.
If he'd scored would the ball have had to be cleared off the line by Bent? The second half would be influenced by the first half, which would be different.
Would West Ham have attacked more and scored, would a player have made a bad challenge and got sent off, would we have scored more.
The possibilities are infinite and ultimately pointless.
-
Good point Rudyard.

Dear oh dear!!!

I don't think us scoring early is good. It just means there is more time for the opposition to equalise. If we can keep scoring the winner around the 80 minute mark then that'll be great.

It's not a Villa game I'm talking about.

I think it was a 'Big Ron-ism' from his commentary days "The good news for Arsenal is that they're 2-0 down very early in the game."
-
These sort of scenarios going through your head is quite common. I used to do this all the time when I was ...11!

Lighten up a bit

Really? We scored five minutes later through Benteke to make it 3-1 and fucked it up then.

There's nothing wrong with me or my sense of humour.
I can't see how the opening post is in any way humorous anyway. It's just a highly flawed hypothetical scenario that you, presumably, wanted peoples opinions on.
I gave my opinion on it, and my reasons for that opinion. Nothing more to it than that.
I think it's pretty pointless but if thats what gets you through the day there's no harm in it.

He had a top ten hit ......... in Greece.

what If Fergie never got all that injury time when potato head pops up with his masher in the net ;( always If's

Without Fergie time Manchester United would be in the Blue Square Northern Premier League now. FACT.
-

We still would have fecked it up. It was written.
-
Well we have trouble hanging on to leads so perhaps the later we open the scoring the better. Can't see us hanging on for 89 mins

I agree. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that football with all it's money is just like Wrestling. The result being premeditated, and the footballers themselves are just entertainers. The Sepp Blater is the Vince Mcmahon of football.
