When we play at home against Sunderland on the 27th April I will be in London. I was wondering if people had any suggestions for good pubs in central London. I'm staying near Victoria station, but am planning to get a tube ticket for zones 1 and 2.
Assume the game won't be on TV, so somewhere with Soccer Saturday would be preferrable.
Cheers,
Adam

The Old Red Cow (Smithfield) is great if you like your beers. Not far from there is the Craft Beer Co on Leather Lane. They do awesome pork pies to go with an enormous range of beers.

You old romantic! Hayley Selassie is going to love her special weekend away!
-
I thought the Tom Cribb in Leicester Square was a nice little (and little being the word) boozer. Not sure if it had any tellyboxes in though.
-
We're in Londinium that day as well!
-
Some people will do anything to get out of watching Villa!
-
Good stuff Mike. How come?
I quite liked Lecicester Square on a brief visit there before.
I am a romantic old dog, I know....

My favourite haunt is Tattershall Castle in Westminster, a boat /bar on the Thames by Embankment station.
Not cheap but good beer, good food and great views.
-
As Risso mentioned those two in Smithfield are pretty decent. If you plan to be in the area, the Jerusalem Tavern on Britton St is worth a visit too.
Unfortunately, there isn't much around Victoria, particularly if you are into your ales, but I'd recommend The Speaker on the corner of Great Peter Street and Perkin's Rents (turn right out of the station entrance - about a 5-10 minute walk towards Westminster).
If you want to watch footie, The Albert is an option (less good but still has some ales and also has a couple of screens I think). This is on Victoria St (again turn right out of the station, 5 minute walk and it's on your left).

Or, as it was known by MOD staff, 'The Belgrano'.

At last something we enjoy talking about...
Beer in the Evening is a website that punters review ale houses in - I have found it most useful on away days - not infallible - but about right.
You can find Pubs in Victoria here http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/results.shtml/el/Victoria%3BLondon/show_comments/5/ (http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/results.shtml/el/Victoria%3BLondon/show_comments/5/)

If you've got an iPhone get the Good Beer Guide app as well. Served me well last time I was in the capital.

I would imagine that they sunk a few in there....

Good pubs do not have televisions.

It is (named after the great prize fighter) a nice little pub. I dont remember any Tvs either.

If it's a proper pub you fancy try these...
Cross Keys, Endell St, top end of Covent Garden
The Harp, Chandos Place off the Strand
Dog and Duck, Bateman St, Soho
The Audley, Mount Street in Mayfair
The Red Lion, Duke of York Street, again in Mayfair (there is another Red Lion a couple of streets away too)
All good pub pubs, but a bit scattered about.

Does anyone get on with those Timothy Taylor pubs in london.
Bricklayers Arms is a nice pub.
The Mita is nice too off Holborn circus
-
Princess Louise is a nice old pub by Holborn, its one of the former Gin Palaces.
-
The Doggetts is one of my old haunts.
South side of Blackfriars Bridge
-
Ive always liked The Salisbury by Trafalgar Square. Nice pic of Marianne Faithfull in there (when she was in her pomp) and a fine selection of real ales as well.

Doggets... weird place that, nice bit of late 70s brutalism... is it still there? One of the better pubs round there is the Kings Arms on Roupell St, or it was when I worked in that neck of the woods.
-
The Tom Cribb is named after him because he used to be the landlord there. In those days it was The Union Arms.
It's a Shepherd Neame house. As a rule of thumb, any London pub which is a Shepherd Neame, Fuller's or Young's house is a good one.
-
A further rule of thumb; any London pub containing a telly showing the football is best avoided.

It may have been demo'd now ? Not sure. Worked over the road for 8 years so that was our local. Architecturally it was a 70's gem.

Go to Holborn. Come out of the tube station. Take your pick. If you go left and down the alley then the Ship is a good starting point.
-
Oh, and don't expect any change out of four quid for a pint.

With or without Mars bar.

There must surely be another book in you Dave. Something along the line of the Football Fans Guide to Awayday Pubs.

PS Probably better to wait another year though given next seasons opportunity to revist those you haven't been to in a long while.

I have no reference on quality of beer etc but there is a very good sports bar in Vic station upstairs. Can remember the name.

Tragic soulless place, London has more to offer than that pal

I agree however if all you want to do is watch sports and football in particular than it is good.
