Title: Sack the defensive coaches
Post by: The Situation on January 26, 2013, 07:39:37 PM
They're obviously clueless at coaching defenders, we keep conceding nearly every game it seems from a set piece. Were can't do any worse then we are are already. They're one of the big reasons why we're so poor. It's time to move them on because it cant go on like this.

I was thinking earlier that we should bring a specialist defensive coach in. Then I remembered what Mark Lawrenson said on the radio as I was driving back from the Bradford game. Along the lines of however much defensive preparation you put in, it is useless if the players aren't good enough to implement it. You know it's getting bad when Lawrenson starts making sense.

DANNY SHITTU has admitted Aston Villa’s defenders BEGGED him not to score another goal on Friday night.

The 6ft 3in Millwall powerhouse towered above tiny Villa to head in the equaliser from a corner in the Lions’ 2-1 FA Cup win.

Defender Shittu said: “I was surprised because their guys were really small and the player they put on me always looked really worried, so it was surprising.

“He was begging me not to get another goal.

“Villa did not look vulnerable just at the back — it was the whole team.”

Shittu was up against 5ft 10in Eric Lichaj and Matt Lowton, who is an inch taller.

And Millwall’s average height is 6ft — 3in taller than Villa’s.

The Lions star added: “We knew Villa were going to be a bit vulnerable and you could see it.

“The crowd also knew it and really got behind us and that affected them.

“We expected more because they are a Premier League side.

“They gave us time to play. Normally in the Championship you don’t get that time to bring the ball down.”

Striker Andreas Weimann revealed the depth of despair in the Villa dressing room after their week of shame.

He said: “Every time a team gets a corner against us we feel they are going to score.

“We’ve noticed ourselves that the last few games we’ve been conceding from set-pieces.”

And Millwall winger James Henry has taunted the Midlanders by telling them they must play better than they did at The Den.

He said: “Our previous game against Burnley was harder — even when we went behind we always fancied our chances.

“We knew if we could put the ball into the box we’d have half a chance of scoring.”

I think the whole situation could be an ecumenical matter.

Quotes from Shittu to be taken with a pinch of salt but I wish I didn't have to hear these lower league players tell us how sh*t we are....I've fathomed that myself!

Just reached the thread where this has been posted sorry! At least it led me to some light hearted Father Ted memories though. I think I'll put A Song for Europe on now.

Just watched the ITV FA Cup highlights show, they did at least show the Villa goals (first chance I've had to see them).

Milwall's first goal: corner comes in and Shittu, who looks like a 7 ft tall mountain, is marked by Lowton(?)! Why not Vlaar or even Bent? It's the simplest thing to put your biggest man on their biggest man.

2nd goal: a straightforward cross comes into the box and Clark completely lost his man who, in three yards of space, headed onto the bar and then in.

It's all so basic!

Who are our defensive coaches? I thought all managers started at the back, the cornerstone of the team and once that is right work on the rest of the team.

I'd pay a team, such as Solihull Moors, to come in and to take corner after corner after corner against us and we just defend set piece after set piece. I'd do this for a few days solid. Nothing else, just defending corners.

I think in training we practice corners with Bannan taking them. Hence why we're so shit at corners at both ends.

The corner for Millwall's first goal is how you should take them. Bannan's are just too easy to defend.

I'm sorry but the ONLY way to defend corners is to attack the fucking ball.
Big bloke on the front stick and fight to get your head to it. That's what you do, there is no other way.

Case study: Martin fucking Laursen. Amen.

Back in Ye Olden Tymes, when I used to run around on a Sunday morning, a mate I played with always said, "hit a corner like you'd hit a shot". Probably about the only thing he ever said that wasn't bollocks

We haven't had anyone defensively who attacks corners and free kicks all season. This is why we've missed Dunne so much - he will make a difference when he's back as that's exactly what he does.

The other issue of course is that Ciaran Clark is not a central defender. He is so often on his heels and lacking in anticipation, it's emabrassing. The only time he does get close enough, he's holding on to players' shirts. A really poor player in that position imho.

Nail on the head. Clark is probably the worst centre half since Steve Sims for being caught on the turn. If he continues to play at the back we will go down he costs us a goal a game.

The number of times the ball has come in from corners and our players get underneath it with the opposition player coming in behind and having a free jump at the ball.  The players are misjudging the flight of the ball and then not reacting to it.  If you cannot get to ball you make sure that you do your utmost to put the opposition player off by backing into him or pushing him a little.  The trouble is that once our players are beaten, they give up.

I've said this in a couple of other threads. I just don't see why Bannan is allowed to take all our corners when he's playing. I've watched bits of Stoke Man City and Oldham Liverpool this weekend and no other team takes these shitty ballooned corners. I don't know whether the thinking is that somebody can head the ball back across the area but I think its more likely that Bannan is just shit. Isn't it better to whip it in with pace for somebody to attack?

Clearly Lambert thinks he's good at set pieces. I'd sack him for that alone.

Desi,

From where I was standing it looked like Lichaj marking him. Your point is correct though.

I'd bring in Laursen, because heaven knows I don't even think we have a defensive coach. I'd also make it compulsory for every defender we have to watch the entirety of God's back catalogue of games for us, 5 a day, every day for the rest of their contracts and tell them not to watch the pretty goals, just look at that colossus at the back for 90 minutes.

And Lichaj didn't exactly bust a gut to stop him did he? Regardless of height we need to be braver defending corners too.

What do our coaches see in training when Bannan puts those corners in? Because if it's anything other than constantly finding the head of a striker or central defender on his side, they need to be put in front of an industrial tribunal for misrepresentation.

Not sure about the height issue.  Apart from  their centre backs Man Yoo are hardly a team of giants but they manage to defend set pieces pretty well.  Evra is, what, about 5'9" or 5'10" if that, and regularly gets on the end of the ball at both ends.

I think our players have been coached to follow the man so intently that they forget to look for the ball.  If you are going to man mark you probably have to do it the Stoke way, stop the bloke from going anywhere.  If you chase him around, he knows where the ball is intended to go and it's easy for him to throw a feint to gain half a yard and lose the defender at the last second.  And that's exactly what's been happening.  It's amateurish, and whoever is coaching them this way is bloody clueless.

I'm another who thinks you need a couple of players, preferably big units,  who will just watch the ball and go hell for leather for it, wherever it is directed, Laursen stylee.  And I agree, Bannan should be nowhere near set pieces and Clark is a pants defender.

Unfortunately, I feel that under Lambert this is what we'll have to get used to. He strikes me as a man who will stick with what he's got even if it's proven to be rubbish, because he chose it.
