We might not of got him,but I like the thinking.

-
The mighty Derbyshire are going to take Division 1 by storm this year.
-
Dougie Brown confirmed as Director of Cricket at Edgbaston replacing the King of Spain.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/21273750
Always thought they'd promote from within.
Good luck Dougie, he's a Bear through and through.
-
Happy with that, although it might mean he has to give up turning out for the Villa old stars!
-
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Warwickshire will dominate the County Championship with relative ease. There's too much quality in almost every area that I don't think any other county can match. Hopefully Dougie can carry on with the good work started by Gilo, but if you consider that Trott and Bell will hardly turn out for the Bears this year, our top six is still one of the strongest in the country. Strength in depth indeed.
-
We'll be up there, but don't underestimate the loss of Giles, he'll be a big loss.
-
Quite fancy Pears vs Bears on 1st June. Haven't been to New Road. Is there any chance the ground won't be under water by then or have they still not got around to building anything dead high-tech like, I don't know, a wall maybe?
-
New signing, is he any good?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/21716014
-
Good first day for the Bears. At stumps on day one of the now-traditional curtain-raiser Champions vs MCC match in the UAE we're 370 for 3.
Both Chopra and Porterfield got into the 160s before being dismissed.
-
I see Westwood has started how he probably means to go on!
-
You beat me to it Plumbutt. Was just going to post that i see westwood was out for a duck .First of a few to come in the new season i suppose. Ashley Westwood could'nt do any worse any worse. Well done Chopra and Porterfield
-
Still going well... Bears declare at 561 for 6. MCC 73 for 7 (seven) in reply.
Two days to take thirteen wickets, should be doable. Hopefully it won't rain or snow in Dubai!
-
Great result for the Bears in winning by an innings and 29 runs. MCC lost 5 wickets for 50-odd runs this morning.
Bodes well for the new season, if it ever stops snowing!
-
Well done Warwick
-
Good work boys. Hopefully a lot more victories to come.
-
Means nothing but good to see the boys start with a win. we missed Woakes for a large chunk of last season so, even though his qualities to us are obvious, even if we lose him to England this summer I think our attack is still the best.
-
Nice to see Bell & Trott in a Bears shirt for once:
http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/local-news/warwickshire-assemble-team-photos-edgbaston-2514477
They look bloody froze!
-
Hard to think that it will warm up the way the weather is going at the moment.
-
Not very impressive pre-season fare from the Bears. Skittled for 131 in our second innings. Oxford University now need 47 to beat us with four wickets remaining.
Still, it's only a friendly.
-
Nothing to worry about... Oxford 133 all out. Bears win by 21 runs.
-
Anyone know anything regarding Tom Milnes?
52no in the first innings and 9 wickets in the match.
I see he's a young local lad.
-
Season preview from the Beeb...
"WARWICKSHIRE
Captain: Jim Troughton
Overseas players: Jeetan Patel (New Zealand)
How they did last season: County champions, CB 40 finalists, fourth in Midlands/Wales/West Group in FL t20.
Season prospects: Warwickshire's strength in securing their seventh title last summer was the simple art of being able to bowl out the opposition twice. Five of their six wins - four of which came crucially in the first six games of the season - were achieved batting second and there is nothing to suggest they will be less of a force with the ball in 2013. The only concern is potential England calls in a busy Ashes summer, which also contains the Champions Trophy in June, but they managed pretty well in 2012 without Jonathan Trott, Ian Bell and Chris Woakes. Now, they have leading wicket taker Chris Wright, top scorer Varun Chopra and all-rounder Rikki Clarke in the England frame as well, but the Bears still have strength in depth.
One to watch: Oliver Hannon-Dalby may have been surplus to requirements with his native Yorkshire, but the Bears have spotted something in the tall seamer to suggest that he could be the latest to roll off the production line at highly-acclaimed bowling coach Graeme Welch's Edgbaston finishing school. Judging by his nine-wicket match haul against the Oxford students, keep a look out too for another fast bowler, youngster Tom Milnes.
WORCESTERSHIRE
Captain: Daryl Mitchell
Overseas players: Thilan Samaraweera (Sri Lanka), Jacob Oram (New Zealand, for FL t20)
How they did last season: Bottom of County Championship Division One (relegated), bottom of CB 40 group, FL t20 quarter-finalists.
Season prospects: Despite managing to stay up in 2011 for the first time since the introduction of two-division County Championship cricket, Worcestershire were always punching above their weight. For a county with such meagre resources, relegation last summer looked inevitable from early season when they paid for the loss of Gareth Andrew, who missed seven games, and main strike bowler Alan Richardson, who still chipped in with 57 wickets. By season's end, they had lost Surrey-bound Vikram Solanki too, but they hope overseas signings Thilan Samaraweera, who is available for the whole summer, and Twenty20 specialist Jacob Oram can trigger something in Steve Rhodes' young team.
One to watch: Ben Cox was a 17-year-old schoolboy when he made a half-century and claimed Marcus Trescothick as his first scalp on his first-class debut at Taunton in September 2009. Having now learned his trade - and, with a former England wicket-keeper like Rhodes as his coach, he will not have gone short on advice - the release of Ben Scott late last summer may have signalled the moment that Cox was deemed ready to be Worcestershire's first-choice keeper, assuming he sees off the challenge of Australian Michael Johnson."
-
New season is here, lets hope the weather picks up!
Come on you Bears!

Come on boys, let's start well...

Warks won the toss and we are bowling.

Typical of him. Once he's settled, he's capable of getting a double ton though.

Can't have been off too long, nine down.
-
Seemed to let them off the hook a bit but we'll see how many we can get tomorrow. Obviously, at this time of year, a draw is always the most likely result.

Agreed. The weather doesn't look great for the next three days either.
We did win 4 out of our first 6 last year though.
-
Start delayed this morning
-
Start delayed this morning
First time in the members lounge for me. I usually slum it at the other end of the ground and catch the rays.
-
No play still- disappointing drizzle.
-
No play on Thursday
-
Strange, hasn't rained here in sunny Chelmsley Wood and hasn't been that dark either today.
-
Ain't gonna be a lot of play today either.
-
Again, not rained in Chelmsley. How can the weather be so so bad, a few miles away?
-
I am at the ground andit is pissing down. They were removing the covers around 30 minutes ago but put them back on pretty sharpish.
-
Pishing down here now to be fair.
Anyone at the game will have to retreat to the beer pumps.
-
Sun has made an appearance. Covers off. Pitch inspection for 3 pm start.
-
Rain back. Covers back on.
-
Bore draw, crappy weather!
-
I might have a little flutter on us to win the T20 at 16/1.
-
Great start to the Durham innings by the Bears.
Durham have lost their 1st two wickets without a run chasing the Bears 1st innings of 345.

Got rid of Benkenstein who's always a pain too.

-
Paul Collingwood with a neat half-century to claw Durham back into it. Still in a strong position.

Warwickshire 345 and 6/0; Durham 284 - Stumps

Bat 'em out of the match by just after tea, skittle them by lunch tomorrow, job done.

100 partnership between Troughton and Ambrose has put us in a good position, 225 ahead with five wickets in hand.

Ambrose has his ton.

Warwickshire 345 and 273/6; Durham 284

-
48 for 6 at lunch and Collingwood gone. Finish 'em off!
-
Nine down... one to go.
-
Durham 94 all out. Easy-peasy.
YOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUU
BEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAARS!
-
Well done Warwick
-
Doing in the second innings what won us the Championship last year. In a bit of a hole and a batsman or two down the order weigh in with big scores. Then skittle out the opposition. Good strong win.
-
It's rare for sides to win back to back championships. It's difficult to see anyone stopping the Bears from doing it. A strong bowling unit with adequate reserves and a batting line up that stretches on and on. It looks like only injuries, the weather and England calls for the bowlers will stop the Bears.
COYB!!
-
I bet England will be tempted to throw in Woakes for the NZ tests now, can't believe he's batting at 8, topped the batting averages last year and showing it again now, and it's not as if batting is the strongest aspect of his game. I can see Wright being brought in at some point too seeing as he's looking more dangerous than Broad has at any point in the last 6 months
-
Well done Warks!
Ps Wright - please don't be too good this season.
-
Great win but I really do worry about our top order at times. I really would have loved it if we had got Ponting.
-
I think Punter would of been a great signing.
-
I think Punter would of been a great signing.
No, I would have had to start liking the rat-faced Aussie twunt.
-
You can make a case for not tinkering too much in the Championship, bearing in mind we are Champions, and finished second the year before.
I'd like to have brought in some foreign superstar batsman for the Twenty20 BishBashBosh Cup though as I feel we've underachieved in that lately.
-
Well done the Bears

Meh, baseball, don't care.

I think Gayle might make a decent addition for the baseball...

Incidentally, the Bears' County Championship match at Somerset, commencing on Thursday, is live on Sky.
-
Annoying that neither Trott nor Bell are allowed to play but Compton is. Racists.
-
Cheating bastard Trescothick.
-
Somerset 133-3 , not bad for warwicks considering they were 108-0 and both openers are now out .
-
183/4. Keep it tight boys.
-
This partnership appears to be taking the game away from us already.
-
Somerset to win by an innings.
-
Somerset to win by an innings.
On what grounds....this is Taunton after all 358 / 6 could have been a wkt or 2 better but even so they may not now achieve their 500 target
-

Our batting line up looks even more thin than usual and we can't always rely on our middle to lower order, especially as Barker is out of this match.
If Chopra goes early we could be blown away. I know it's at Taunton but there was enough in the pitch early on to suggest there is something for the bowlers to work on.
Granted Somerset's bowling attack doesn't appear to be all that strong.
*I very much hope I have egg on my face come Sunday afternoon.
-
Although I didn't notice that Trego was out, did I just miss this altogether or did they come back on after the bad light interruption.
-
They came back after the bad light and completed the full 96 overs. Could have had another wkt = the young twin C.Overton.
-

Cheers, I had it on all day and turned it over to Peppa Pig when they went off, presuming the light wouldn't improve.
-
Nicely finished off this morning.
-
Trouble is, the Bears are 24-2 at lunch.....a duck from Porterfield, Chopra out cheaply. Need a captains innings from Jim!
Westwood will be missing for 4 weeks with a twisted ankle, Barker out for another 5 weeks. Where's Maddy and Rankin? At least we have Bell and Trott for the next 2 County Championship matches.
-
Rankin is injured and Maddy is in the seconds at the moment which I find quite surprising.
-
Rankin is injured and Maddy is in the seconds at the moment which I find quite surprising.
Rankin has now recovered and was supposed to be in line to play in this game. Maddy should be in for Javid. 104/6 at tea - not looking good; need Rikki to score big and someone to stay with him. Somerset's attack isn't that great, our batting is a worry.
-
Slow and steady now...
Somerset 406; Warwickshire 139/6
Warwickshire trail by 267 runs with 4 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
-

Rankin has now recovered and was supposed to be in line to play in this game.
I don't know then, I'd imagine he would have been an automatic pick with Barker injured and Hannon Dalby looking truly awful.
-
158 all out but it looks as if Somerset are not going to enforce the follow in.
Strange decision in my opinion.
-
Were the Bears not allowed to play Bell & Trott or was it by choice?
Jeetan Patel is hardly a daemon spinner, we would have been better served by either getting a better one or a top order batsman.
Somerset look a very strong team, as they did last year. Overton the no. 11 is a pretty impressive bowler for an 18 year old. He'll sign for ManCity soon enough.

To be fair to Patel he was highly effective last year.
Agree we needed a batsman though.

It's a pity Metters doesn't seem to have progressed.
He's had a shoulder injury for 12 months - likely to miss this season after another op

Chopra's got his century. I reckon he's due an England call up soon.

Great regard from The Bears.

Indeed - nail biting tension to get us in the mood for tomorrow night .
Wonderful session of cricket.
-
Thats why we're Champions !
OHD seems a better batsman than bowler ;)
Bell and Trott to appear for next 2 games as well
-
Just think, we couldn't play our 2 England batsmen and were missing an opening batsman and bowler. Superb effort lads
-
Great stuff. Proper cricket.
-
Chopra's got his century. I reckon he's due an England call up soon.
Woakes deserves to be in on his batting alone.
I reckon he will eventually be a batsman who can bowl very effectively. He should be pushed up the order at Warwick.
A GREAT county player, i really hope he can push on as he seems a genuinely nice chap.
-
It's a pity Metters doesn't seem to have progressed.
He's had a shoulder injury for 12 months - likely to miss this season after another op

The injuries and international call ups are really taking their toll. I saw that the side for the 40 over match today is: Porterfield, Maddy, Troughton, Ambrose, Clarke, Javid, Piolet, Milnes, Patel, Rankin, Gordon. Would be quite a feat to win with that side

Bears 78-6...............................

128 all out - depressing indeed!

I still worry about us at times but our ability to get out out of the shit time and time again is remarkable.
It must be an immense dressing room to be a part of.
It appears we are going to need to do it again.

Looks like we have to bat our way out of the crap again. I was worried on the first day that not only would we take a belting, we'd get docked points for producing an unfit wicket too. By the sound of it it's not that bad.
My son is as happy as you are, Chris.
-
I didn't have particulary high hopes for Yorkshire this season as I realised we would be without Root, Bairstow and possibly Bresnan for a lot of the season and Sidebottom seems to pick up a few injuries but the new bowlers have started well and everybody is chipping in with runs particulary Root and Rashid. Think Plunkett could have a good season as he hasn't given up on playing for England again and a fresh start could kick start his career again.
-
Think Plunkett could have a good season as he hasn't given up on playing for England again and a fresh start could kick start his career again.
I always look out for Plunkett's figures because he seemed to go from bad to worse over the years, 5, 6, 7 an over regularly.
He started this season the same way but seems to have pulled it round in recent weeks. There are a lot of people in front of him in the England pecking order though.
-
Yorkshire 407 all out, Rashid 110 not out, a lead of 279.
Warwickshire 9 for 3 in reply just in case anybody was wondering.

This is a real hammering - retaining the title is looking bleaker every day.

It's all gone quiet over there ;D

Yorkshire win by an Innings and 139 runs, bloody marvellous. It can start chucking it down now.

Too be honest i'm not sure - during the commentary they said that Rankin was on his way to Guildford but then well into the afternoon session someone commented that Rankin had been held back at Trent Bridge as there were still doubts about Finn's fitness....although he is playing in today's game.....so in essence i havent a clue.
-

I don't think you are allowed to change your team once you start to bat because otherwise what would stop a team struggling for runs sticking another batsman (or even better, an all-rounder) in at the end?

Makes sense, although it still seems unfair that one side is allowed to sub in a ringer and the other isn't. It's not as if Rankin's stand-in has played any part in the game so far, whereas Surrey have been able to use 6 front line bowlers.
According to Cricinfo Surrey are playing 11 from 12, the Bears 11 from 11, so it looks like Rankin will be sitting the game out.
Woakes is shown as part of England's Champions Trophy squad of 15 so I guess he is out for a few weeks.
-
Rankin would have been eligible to play if England had released him - even though Bears batting. He would have replaced Tom Milnes - Milnes far and away the better batsmen of the two but Rankin the finer bowler.

-
Get the last two out and then dig in Bears!
-
Bears need 33 to win with 3 wickets remaining. Meanwhile, Essex 20 all out!
-
Really good fightback lads - lets see it through and get the win!
-
Need 23 with two wickets left. Patel 50.
-
Patel gone, buggered now I reckon.
-
Defeat by 11runs
-
I'm pissed off with this defeat; too many loose shots.
-
Boooooo at least we aren't essex.
-
Boooooo at least we aren't essex.
Leave my team alone (crock of shit that they are). At least they got into double figures (just).
-
Ok Bears fans what is going wrong this season ?
For me apart from the obvious - injuries/international call ups - its a lack of many top class batsmen (Porterfield as an example is shocking)
Not sure how we can stop this very poor run
-
Something isn't right in the kingdom of Warwickshire!
-
Something isn't right in the kingdom of Warwickshire!
Staying up is the priority now , 2 wins in 15 games this season has been very poor - dougie brown was my 1st choice for the role but he now needs to address the situation and sort it out.
-
Are the Bears going to play any time soon, it seems like a month since their last game?
-
Are the Bears going to play any time soon, it seems like a month since their last game?
Probably no bad thing given the way things have been going. Thy play today I think.
-
Live on Sky tonight.
-
What a crap start 75-4 off 13
First game and give up on competition, no Troughton or Ambrose, Clarke cant bowl, 2 lads making T20 debuts.....not a good sign.
At least Clarke and Maddy put 50 on for 5th wkt 87-4 now after 14
-
18 overs - 109/6
A slow wicket but pathetic!!!!
-
Scrub that 18.1 overs 109/7
-
112/8 18.5 overs - that is now 3 ducks Evans, Woakes and now Patel!!!!
-
Forgot all about this due to the tennis. Seems like we're doing shite again.
-
118 all out on last ball of innings including a 4th duck!!!!
-
That was not very good, I hope the pitch gets worse!
-
Better take a look. I got caught up in the tennis too.
-
Glamorgan aint started too brightly - 2 overs gone 11-2
-
We seem to be just going with the seamers where as they went for mainly spinners.l
-
71 off 78 balls required
48 - 2 off 7
They picked 4 spinners us 1 Patel plus Javid
-
we need wickets!
-
Your wish!!!
Young lad McKay got a stumping off Patel 53-3
-
We just got one! Always thought the rule that you can be stumped off a wide is stupid but I'll take it in this case.
-
you get one you can get two!
-
you get one you can get ten!
Fixed.
-
67/3 0ff 12 we were 69 - 4 so they want 6.5 per over
67- 4 javid 2nd wkt shame not Marcus North out....perhaps we have a chance
-
Maddy retiring at end of the season. Shame, but good luck to him.
-
81/4 15 overs
Javid 2-18 off his 4 - done well
38 off 30
-
12 off that over could mean game over!!!!
Piolet 0-24 off his 4 - 12 in the last one
-
Come on Bears!
-
Ex Bear James Run Out 98-5
21 off 15 required
-
17 off 12
Patel to bowl next - his last.....Get rid of Marcus North.....please!!!!
-
As if by magic - North B Patel
-
Experience of Nathan McCallum seen this off a six and a 4 off Patel means just 4 off last over with McCallum on strike.....at least we made a game of it.
Wright to bowl the last.
-
Dot balls!!!
-
Bears lose.
Said before that it's ludicrous we insist on only having one foreign player for the Twenty20. North and McCullum made the difference for them. Had we had a destroyer in the middle order we'd probably have won.
-
a six off the first ball!!!!
Game over
-
Grrr, I had a time delay on the stream so I read the outcome before the inevitable happened, oh well!
-
I'm sad to say it, but the bears are just a poor side this year.
Call ups don't help, but only Rankin was unexpected.
-
Bears lose.

Agree 100% - this is a tournament that draws the crowds - good overseas players enhance the tournament.....McClenaghan stayed on at Lancs , McCallum here at Glamorgan....so many opportunities to sign a top player but not taken!!!!
-
Very poor, early July and still only 2 wins in all competitions is absolutely terrible........and the comment about only having one overseas player for T20 was spot on - every other county seems to recruit a specialist, we just have Patel playing in every game and he is no world beater. And what has happened to Woakes ?
-
I don't think Woakes has quite the ability we believed. He could still be a good county player if he can become more consistent, but international class he is not and I don't believe ever will be.
-
everyone must be watching Murray as no one has commented on another miserable display by the Bears.............
-
I didn't know. My phone is supposed to send me beeps when wickets happen in Warwickshire matches. Stupid thing.
-
hard to believe its the same players as last year - maybe Brown is to blame ?
-
Midlands/Wales/West Division: Northamptonshire v Warwickshire at Northampton - Jul 5, 2013
Northamptonshire 161/2 (20/20 ov); Warwickshire 134/8 (20/20 ov)
Northamptonshire won by 27 runs
-
Yikes. Northants are always shite too.
-
We really are crap at T20.
-
I see we're going ofer after today's loss.
-
Very poor season for the bears.
-
Oh dear
-
I know most people watching tennis but there is also a T20 game at New Rd where Gloucester only made 119 - 9 of their 20 overs.
Bears be rock bottom tonight by the look of it!!!
-
And back to tye four day game.
Good start for the Bears, 66-0 after 19 overs
-
226-1 not bad at all

Middlesex v Warwickshire at Uxbridge - Jul 8-11, 2013
Warwickshire 486/6d; Middlesex 57/4 (12 ov)
-
Finally got them all out for 309, 177 behind so I would imagine we can enforce the follow on? Imagine it's 150 as it usually seems to be in First Class cricket. The Aussie Voges got 150.
Warwickshire 486/6d
Middlesex 309 (82.4 ov)
Middlesex trail by 177 runs with 0 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
-
Middlesex now 42 for 2 following on.

Great work today Bears.
-
Middx 267 - 9, a lead of 90.
Surely we can't mess this one up?
-
286 all out, so we'll need 110 to win in two sessions. Should be straightforward. COYB.
-
Not a brilliant start... 5 for 2. Time to start panicking?
-
Things improving slightly!!!
32-3 now so only 78 to get .......we can't cock this one up..........can we!
Ambrose being somewhat positive at least
-
Javid out now. We need 56 with 6 wickets remaining.
Come on Woakesy.
-
Agree come on Woakes but Ambrose probably the key he's NO 22 and appears settled - if he stays there we win.
55 to win now!!!
-
First over after tea completed 82/4 now 28 required minimum 31 overs to go......
-
18 to get, shouldn't mess this up.
-
98/5
Ambrose gone for 47
12 req'd
-
11 runs to win.
What are the odds on Clarke trying to hit a 6?
-
Almost as many runs as wickets left required for the Bears.
-
quick 12 off Ricky - game over and 22 points out of game....out relegation places.
-
Rikki Clarke finishes the game off with two fours.
Well done Bears.
-
He did it in two 4's :)
YOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU BEEEEEAAAAAARRRRRRRSSSSS
-
You Bears!
-
up to 5th with 90 points but Notts will go above us with their points from a probable drawn game against Surrey where Ponting now 162 NO.
Notts at Edgbaston on Monday - hopefully sun shining and 4 days in section 19 or 10 dependent on how thirsty i get!!!!
-
Ah, I remember winning! Hopefully can get a bit of confidence out of this and, at least, move clear of the relegation battle.
-
Well done boys. Good win.
-
Nice one Warwick
-
It must be the first time we've started with a full bowling attack for a while, even if Wright didn't last long.

No idea.
Apropos of nothing, on TMS the other day they had a letter from someone from the Vale of Belvior (pronounced "Beaver" of course), and Tuffers and (I think) Aggers corpsed when one of them said "It's always nice up Belvoir", "Yes, I've always like it in Belvoir."
-
Decent start for the Bears today in the baseball. Gloucs 29 for 3.

Anyone going to the baseball next Saturday against Northants?
The missus fancies it for some reason, and it's apparently still going to be summer so why not.

Going Wycombe, otherwise I
would. Considering the Bears v Pears baseball game on Friday 26th if the weather's still alright, if you fancy it?

Been to Wycombe before, it's okay, would have gone but I'm going to a party on the evening and wouldn't have got back in time.
Might do the BvP game though.
-
Chris Wright out for the rest of the season with a stress fracture of the back:
Ouch my back hurts (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/23314243)
I hope the rest of the attack stays fit or we will be in for a tough run-in.

Warwickshire v Nottinghamshire at Birmingham - Jul 15-18, 2013
Warwickshire 241/6 (91 ov)
Nice if we can get to 300
-
253/6
Decent enough.
-
Day off tomorrow, think I might just spend it at Edgbaston.
-
It's been on 5live Sports Xtra.
The two chaps on there are a bit dour but entertaining enough. This afternoon they spent ten minutes discussing whether Radio WM or Cov & Warks would ask them to report first. They sort of forgot the cricket.
-
377-6. Good to see the batting from last season again. just when we're in a spot of bother a good lower order stand puts us back in charge. Tehn teh bowlers let rip. Pity about Wright because was a huge part of our success last season. Hopefully the others can all step up to the crease.
-
Impressed with Laurie Evans: 165 not out, Ateeq Javid looks to be a good prospect and could develop into a good all rounder with his spin bowling: 182 stand so far for the 7th wicket. Need to wear out Notts in the field. Our bowlers will be fresh! Come on you Bears!!!
-
Evans out for 178, well played that man.
412/7
-
18 from one Hussey over also. its not as if barker can't bat either. keep going Warwciks and get up to 500/600.
Clearly we'll be all out for 430 now.
-
Rankin in at one end, so Barker may as well have a bit of a bash around.
-
Barker hit a four and was out next ball.
Still 463, not bad at all.
-
Think we've taken a wicket straight away!
-
38 for 1 they were 5 for 1

Is it ever!
I went yesterday and they allowed us onto the outfield at lunch and tea, even after five sessions there was hardly a mark on it and no cracks to speak of.
Looked like the groundsman was preparing a bit of a greenish one for the next game though.
-
WICKET! - Lumb gone for 51.
Every time someone is out they bring in another top player!
-
And suddenly Notts are 194/6 - could still be a vague chance of the win.
-
Worcs 22-6 at Cheltenham earlier now 86-6
-
Notts now 208/8 - definitely sense a win now with the likely follow on! Jeets is beginning to make inroads - him and Javid will be the key second innings......
-
217/9 - Patel has 4 wickets.
-
217 AO
-
COME ON YOU BEARS!
-
Bears 6 for 1 second innings. Need to get at least 150 more. Obviously didn't enforce the follow on - I assume to give the bowlers a rest on this hot day?
-
is it hot? Otherwise I cannot think of any possible reason for not putting them straight back in. not a good decision though. how much is enough?
-
Would be a shock if Notts could get more than 350 in the last innings I think.
-
At tea the lead is 314 with 4 sessions of the match left. Both sides have scored very slowly throughout the game so I reckon we should throw the bat for another 90 minutes to get the lead up to the 400 mark and have half an hour at them tonight with the ball.
Of course the pitch may prevent this!

Possibly a mistake not to make them follow-on? although I can fully understand that our bowlers would be a bit drained after Notts 1st innings in that heat yesterday. Anyway, time for Jeets to weave his magic spin this afternoon!

On the topic of whether we should have made them follow on yesterday - i have spent the first 3 days down at the ground sitting in the sun and conditions were extremely hot and although i admit to being disappointed that follow on wasnt enforced i cant say i was surprised though - it would have been exhausting to bowl i think 57 overs in that heat.

I'm glad you're providing the updates, PGW. Cricinfo, the ECB app on my phone and BBC Cricket are showing them at 165 - 6 and are about 20 overs behind.
Thank you for such sterling work. Now if you can do anything about Hussey.......

Interesting report on Cricinfo. I like the imaginative captaincy by Chopra. That's refreshing to see.

People on here and in press are starting to talk up Bears chances of retaining title, decided to look at current state of play.
Top of league Sussex are i imagine gonna lose at home to Middx (229 & 14-1 v 496 Middx) thereby only taking 3 points out of game, Yorkshire on the other hand look like getting maximum points as they will thrash Derby by an innings so after currwnt round of games the table will read:
Yorks P10 Pts 149
Suss P 11 Pts 143
Durham P9 Pts 129.5
Bears P10 Pts 112
We have to play Sussex at home on 28/8 and Yorks away on 2/8, currently 37 points behind Yorks so we must beat them and Sussex to have any chance at all of catching them, we have played Durham twice already. Our other games are against a struggling Somerset side at home (20/8) Notts away 03/09 whom we have just beaten, Surrey home 17/9 who are currently in 2nd relegation space plus last of all Derby away 24/09 who are rock bottom.
I suppose we could win those last 3, how many draws can we afford to take, what effect will weather have in late September.
I will remain hopeful but i think the title is out of reach. At least i'm writing about the top of the league rather than the relegation battle which we were involved in only a couple of games ago.
-
Also says why we didn't enforce the follow-on:-
"We had to be patient in this game. On wickets like this at Edgbaston, trying to get 20 wickets is always very difficult. Against Lancashire we made them follow-on and they batted out the day.
"We didn't enforce here and it was always in the back of your mind that it might have been the wrong decision but we felt if we added a few more runs to give us a big lead to work with and the wicket might deteriorate a bit more and that would be to our advantage with an international spinner in the side."

They were utter garbage 13/5 after 5. Some good bowling from Zummerzet and some cracking fielding. But no fight from Warks with the exception of Clarke. Only positive note was the Thatchers Gold tasted like Tizer.

Did you have time to finish your Thatchers before the end?

Zums' innings was completed just as I drained the pint I got at the interval - and we got to our seats after 0.5 overs. Not the best of days. Was contemplating Wednesday's game but I don't think I've got it in me.

Won with 14 balls to spare....
Maddy struggled at start but experience came to the fore!!!
3 no balls in the over by Christian then helped somewhat as well.
-
Bears have sold about 8000 for Friday plus i daresay a few freebies flying about.
-
Bears remain in 4th on 8 points from 8 games
Somerset 3rd on 8 points 7 games
Worcester 6th on 4 points from 7 games
Glouc 5th on 4 from 8 games so in effect out of it....gonna be hard to knock Glam and Northants out of top 2.
Fixtures for us, Somerset and Pears are:
Bears home to Worcester & Somerset MUST win both
Somerset away to Gloucester, Worcester and Bears
Worcester home to Somerset and away to Bears and Northants
If we win both on 12 points so i assume we need Worcester to beat Somerset which then knock Somerset out of frame us having beaten them.
Gonna be tight!!!!
-
Stupid question, but will you be able to pay on gate tomorrow?
Come on you Pears, though my mate will be supporting the Bears.

Bumper crowd set to see if rivals can be tamed
OLD rivals Worcestershire will stand in the way of the win Warwickshire desperately need when the teams meet in the Twenty20 tonight.
With the weather forecast mercifully set fair (the Bears are certainly owed a few dry big-occasion days) a 10,000-plus crowd is expected at Edgbaston.
Most will be willing Varun Chopra’s side on to record the victory which would keep them in the hunt for a place in the quarter-finals.
Victory over Gloucestershire on Wednesday kept their hopes alive and further wins against Worcestershire tonight and at home to Somerset on Tuesday could well squeeze the Bears through to the last eight.
As always with the current format, it is a complex equation. The top two teams from each group will qualify, along with the two best third-placed teams.
In theory, Warwickshire could even make it through with just one win from their last two games but that is very unlikely. Defeat tonight, against a Worcestershire side already out of the qualification picture, would be a huge and probably terminal blow.
In the midst of the extravangaza of T20 thrills, meanwhile, during the interval tonight will be a bit of fun from a mascot race.
Bears mascots Carmen and Hugh take on Bella the Lion (Aston Villa), Beau Brummie (Blues), Wolfie (Wolves) and Sky Bue Sam (Coventry City) in a “sprint”.
-
I know at least 5 people including myself who are going 8)
Come on Bella, get a ruddy move on!

Wonderful stand between Chopra & Maddy. Another failure for Porterfield and captaincy certainly suits Chopra. He's getting closer to an England call with every passing game.
Maddy will leave a huge hole in our one day side next season.
-
Great stuff Warwick, how many people showed up?
-
I guess about 12,000.
Good night apart from Jane of this parish fell and cracked her head open. Luckily she's ok, just three stitches and she's still in the pub now with us. :-)
Bit of fisticuffs outside the stadium afterwords... never seen cricket agro before! Silly little kids.

Yes, well over the 10K that was expected.
Bit of a shock, when you are used to the the ground being 5% or less full, to see a crew from Worcs to turn up early doors and occupy the upper north of what used to be called the Rea Bank Stand, replete with SG Cross flag, chanting "I would rather be a pear than a bear" and "If woakes can play for england so can i".
Best wishes to Jane.
-
Damn, missed the fighting.
Had to walk back to town as all the buses were packed, Amanda insisted we had a drink in the one of the first pubs we came to, which of course, if you know the area you walk through to get back to town, was one of those flying a rainbow coloured flag. Nice pint mind, but I had to explain to Amanda why all the men were holding hands and kissing, she had had a few drinks and probably thought they were just very friendly in this part of town.

Thank you for looking after me last night all, the bruises are coming up a treat today!

Could do with Worcestershire beating Somerset. They need 11 off 11 with five wickets left.
Come on you Pears!
*washes mouth out with soap and water*
-
Well done Pears. Must make it so much sweeter knowing you've done the Bears a mighty good service
-
After their performance against the Bears last night I didn't think they'd get anywhere near the Somerset total. Great innings by Andre Russell and a good result for the Bears.
You Bears!!
-
Russell can certainly strike a cricket ball, good game that, only started watching when Worcs. were 22/2 and thought they were already well out of it. Should be a cracking game now v Somerset.
-
I'm a Pears fan and haven't seen us beat the Bears yet. Only seen a win in a 40 over semi a few years ago.
I'll be at the pro 40 game in August.
Was sat near the Worcester posse. Good natured banter between the two.
-
I was sat fairly close to a big group of Worcester fans, mostly light-hearted joshing.
-
Bears v Somerset live on Sky after adverts. Winners go through, losers knocked out. COYB.

Not great so far.

I think we are too cultured for T20.

-
Don't blame the batsmen. They bowled well at the death we didn't. Oh well, it's only baseball.
-
Don't think we bowled well other than Rankin.
-
The last two overs from Arafat & Thomas were fantastic. When an experienced limited overs batsman like Maddy can barely score a run then you know the better side won.
-
Not sure how Rankin only bowled three overs. Was it a cock-up or a deliberate ploy? Either way, bloody stupid.
-

I thought Chopra gambled on Maddy. He was economical until one bad over that went for 22 & ultimately cost us the game. That was where Rankin's 4th over was used up.

Rafiq bowled the first over after lunch.....he had been off the field all morning - partly at hospital being X-Rayed....why? He should have waited an hour plus.....shouldn't he!
-
The Yorkshire scorer has just said that because Rafiq had an external injury which the umpires were aware of and i assume could see meant that he could participate in game with bat or ball immediately.
I assume that say he had a calf strain therefore that's an internal injury and therefore not visible....so therefore couldn't bowl.

It could be a very interesting first session tomorrow morning if Patel & Barker can reduce the deficit to around 30 ish it puts Yorkshire under enormous pressure as the forecast for Monday is horrendous so what sort of target do they set bears, they will be concious of events at Lords where Middlesex will probably win by lunch putting added pressure onto Yorks at the top of the table. It could be because of this pressure that we can dismiss them quite quickly......who knows.....as i say an interesting day ahead a lot of it down to Patel and Barker as i don't suppose Rankin will hang around too long.

Must have been relatively close then. Which means the umpire was guessing. gets my goat as much as lineman sticking their flag up for close decisions (offside) and are clearly guessing. If in doubt don't give it out/offside. If the umpire/linesman think they are right then they are guilty of serious misjudgment. Not because the decision was wrong but because they believe they are right.

-
Not a bad day, how is the weather looking for tomorrow?
98% chance of rain according to my weather app. And it's going to rain solidly throughout the day, rather than in just one cluster. I'll be surprised if we get an over in, let alone enough time to take three wickets and get 200 or so runs.
-
Chucked it down in Harrogate all night and still raining so I'm guessing Yorkshire aren't going to have the opportunity to bowl Warwickshire out today.
-
Been raining here since 8 a.m. at least. It does seem to be easing off though, skies are getting a bit lighter. From past experience the weather here reaches Headingley in about 20 minutes.
Could be a frustrating day.
-
Yorkshire now lead by 171 runs with 2 wickets left.
Think if I was them I'd declare, hardly any chance we'll get those runs and they just might be able to bowl us out in these conditions.
Only 3 points for a draw anyway (unless we tie).
-
Ah well, they've lost both wickets anyway.
Bears require 174 runs to win - which seems unlikely unless we treat it like a 20/20 match.
-
Cleaned them up at last, 174 to win. We have to give it a go, but weather in the distance not looking great.
-
Match drawn. Have to be satisfied with a moral victory.
-
9 points each, not too bad I suppose.
-
Decent set of results for Yorkshire with Durham and Sussex losing. Hopefully Jacques will be fit and available fo the run in and Root, Bairstow and Bresnan will be dropped by England as I keep reading how poor they are along with the rest of the England team.

Lees must be some prospect. 20 years old, 9 (I think) championship games and has a double century and a century to his name as well as a few other decent scores. Not a bad start.

I was chatting to a chap who has been watching Yorkshire since the fifties and now works for them and he spoke very highly of Lees but reckoned there's a 16 year old who has already scored a century for the Academy who is the best he's seen, can't remember his name though!

Taking it a bit personally aren't you? Bairstow is not good enough and Bresnan hasn't performed consistently enough and should also be dropped. I think we pushed Root up to open too soon but there's no other place for him so I'd keep him there.
-
Not taking it personally at all, they say a strong Yorkshire side means a strong England team, I'd love to see us win the championship coupled with an Ashes victory. Just happen to think a lot of miseries on the Cricket thread are very quick to criticise.
-
Just happen to think a lot of miseries on the Cricket thread are very quick to criticise.
Aren't they just!
Imagine what a cricket thread on here would have looked like when England were truly shite.
-
Bairstow's place in the team in this series is not unlike Bell's selection in 2005. Perseverance with Bell wasn't exactly a waste of time and didn't do the team much harm either.
In the current series Bairstow has scored more runs than either Cook or Trott.
-

Absolutely, people have very short memories. The only reason I'm able to comment on the abilities of Root and Bairstow is because I've watched them both since they broke into the Yorkshire team, I couldn't comment on whether Compton or any of the other names who have been mentioned are any better because I haven't seen them play on a regular basis.
I doubt very much whether I will have the pleasure of watching Root playing for Yorkshire many times for the next 10 years.

Yep. If you told me we would be starting a game without Wright, Barker, Woakes, Rankin and Clarke I would predict a fairly high score for the opposition of any calibre.

I thought we'd be in for a long hard slog in the field with our inexperienced attack. Credit to them for sticking with it despite the fielders dropping Kieswetter a few times.
Now for some application from the batsmen.

Problems will be for our bowling attack for 2nd innings both Barker (Ankle) and Clarke have sustained injuries whilst bowling in Somerset innings. Also if Woakes is released by England you would have assumed he would have replaced Gordon. Now that Gordon is batting i assume that Woakes will be unable to bat in the first innings - or does it mean he may replace Barker or Clarke!!!

Don't forget Barker and Clarke are bowling with ankle injuries, Gordon in his first championship game. Woakes and Rankin both away playing for England teams, the fact that Dockrell took 6 wkts in the Bears innings suggests pitch is taking fair amount of spin. So to me a fairly reasonable decision.

It's still an insane rule. If the batters want to carry on, they should be given the option to do so unless it is pitch black, if the fielding side want to carry on they should be offered the chance to do so with spinners.
I see no logic in the new rule at all.

I would say that he has found the job more difficult than he thought. He has been very unlucky with injuries with over the course of the season losing and Rankin. Chris Wright fairly early on plus further injuries to Hannan-Dalby even earlier plus those to Barker and Rankin. Rankin gets fit and he gets called up by England along with Woakes. Everyone knew Woakes would be on England scene but i think Rankin was a surprise. He of course also lost his skipper for 4 County games albeit Chopra filled in admirably.
So i think Dougie's reign is definetly 'Work in Progress'.
I do believe they could have utilised Darren Maddy's undoubted experience more in the Championship but i suppose the thinking there was to give some of the younger blood the requisite experience in Ateeq Javid and Laurie Evans and they have been massive success' for Dougie and both have a long future at the club. We have also lost runs in the batting due once again to injuries to the like of Westwood. IW isnt everyone's cup of tea but he does offer some consistency at the top off the innings. The one big disappointment must be the failure again of Porterfield and i'm not too sure what future he has at the club.
We have the young inexperienced Coleman who is back with the Bears after playing for Scotland in YB40 now that the championship is likely to be out of reach maybe Dougie can slip him in somewhere between now and season end to see what he offers. Piolet going to Sussex to get some championship experience can be of benefit.
It was always going to be difficult for Dougie coming in on the back of a Championship win plus a one day final appearance but i certainly want him at the club for the forseeable future along with Graeme Welch. It's coaching staff that is Bears through and through with Tony Frost on the coaching staff as well.
It would be good if the club could recruit Jos Buttler - so watch this space on that one.
As i write Porterfield gets bowled for 44 by Crook so another time where he gets in and doesn't go on.

I see Sussex 311 A/O. Warwickshire 81/4 in reply. We were 0/2 at one stage! Chopra, Javid and Porterfield all got ducks. Porterfield is useless - I think I could bat better than him! Our bowling attack is decimated by England call-ups and injuries. Well done to Chambers on-loan from Essex; a 5 wicket haul - perhaps he could follow Chris Wright under the guidance of Graham Welch?
This season has been a nightmare especially in the T20 & YB40.

Grande Pablo may not be to impressed with the news that Somerset are only 4 wkts away from an innings victory with Middx 106 & 104-6 still 239 behind Somerset so a maximum haul of 24 points taking them to 111 points overtaking Derbyshire who were 219 all out so only 1 point there, Surrey in reply 56-2 so it probably will be Derby back in bottom 2. A real bottom of the table clash at the Oval.Neither side can afford to lose and a draw no good with Somerset sure to win.
Meanwhile back here at Edgbaston Bears moved onto 307-7 only 4 behind.

I have just selected a side from players who are injured or just not available through international duty and you can see right away why our defence of the title has been a struggle:
Porterfield, Trott, Bell, Troughton, Coleman, Ambrose, Clarke, Milnes, Wright, Rankin & Hannon - Dalby no spinner in that side but you could select either Metters or Best as a spin option.
Just having 4 or 5 of these being available would have been of great benefit.
Rankin just got his 2nd wkt in a rather unfortunate way....Ed Joyce stepped on his wkt for 1 (10) 36-2 8 overs Rankin 2-19 from 4

Superb stuff from a very depleted side ravaged by injuries and England/Ireland call-ups. Chambers looks a good prospect. A young Jamie Atkinson from Dorridge CC from Birmingham League is keeping wicket for the injured Pete McKay.
First change of the morning Woakes replacing Chambers.
I wrote yesterday that the replacement keeper was a Hong Kong International i erred there it is in fact Jamie Atkinson today's keeper and in his young life has set his own piece of history. Thanks for the updates and insights PGW.
The way the English game is geared towards the national team(s) really does undermine cricket at county level. It's understandable why the game at national level is given priority, but should this really have to devalue county game so much?
This fixture has become a bit of a joke, yet could have had a major influence on the destination of the county title.

Worc 102 & 163-3 Essex 351 Worc 86 behind
-
May be a good thing that it is supposed to rain a lot on Friday then....
-
A steady start this morning with a bit of luck to go with it when Ateeq Javid was dropped on his overnight score by Samit Patel at 3rd slip.
They are now still 15 behind:
46-2
Evans 19
Javid 11
-
Bears have the lead in effect 1-2
62-2
Evans 27
Javid 19
-
Some other scores:
Durham have set Sussex 402 and immediately Onions strikes Sussex 4-1
Oh hold on: Bears 81-3 Javid Ct Read b Shazad 24 - played at a really wide one and got an edge....silly wicket in effect 20-3.
Woakes come in.
Somerset lead by 99 with 5 wkts in hand v Derby
Middx lead by 365 with 2wkts in hand v Surrey
Worcester trail by 42 with 3 wkts left v Essex
Woakes smites a 4 to go to 85-3
-
Bears injury jinx has struck again. Darren Maddy has suffered a bad calf strain and will have to bat with a runner. Will be interesting if Maddy & McKay at the wkt together. I've never seen 2 runners at one time.
Evans has his 50. Notts certainly don't like him after his 178 no at Edgbaston
109-3
Evans 52
Woakes 13
Lead 48
-
The time I saw Evans play on TV this year he had an injury and couldn't put proper force into his shots, still made a 50 mind you.
-
Shite - Last ball before lunch Samit Patel with last ball of his first over has Woakes bowled.
126-4 Lead of 65
Evans 59 no
I hope that this isn't some sort of omen - spin gets a wkt in its first over of the day.
-
Are you at the game PGW ? How many do we need in your opinion ?
-
No i'm not at the game, listening, in my opinion if we managed to bat the day out which is another 64 overs then game should be safe as there is heavy rain forecast tonight and tomorrow morning. To bat another 64 overs will be very difficult though but we MUST set a minimum lead of 200 (65 currently) hopefully 250. If we are all out before Tea then we have problems if we set say 175-180 with 35 overs left today Notts will have a real go to get as many of them today as they can in the hope of getting on the field some time tomorrow. Samit Patel could be the key this afternoon.
Stef Piolet has come out now with Evans so lets keep everything crossed. Four to Evans off first ball after lunch.
-
Interestingly Patel taken out of attack straight after lunch Harry Gurney back on
-
135-5
Evans Ct Taylor b Gurney 63
Piolet 4
Maddy in with a runner..
Lead of 74
Crucial wkt that.
Evans 898 Championship runs so far this season would have been nice to get to 900.
Maddy edges first ball to slip just falling short.
-
Other scores; sussex 74-4 req further 328 v Durham
Somerset 196 ahead with 2 wkts left v Derby
Surrey req further 332 with 9 wkts standing v Middx
Essex req 51 with 10 wkts v Worc
We are now 137-5 lead 76
-
Essex req 51 with 10 wkts v Worc
I think I'm right in saying that Essex have been out for less than 51 this season.
-
Essex req 51 with 10 wkts v Worc
I think I'm right in saying that Essex have been out for less than 51 this season.
Have they been all out for less than 9. They are 42- 0 now LOL
-
Bears slowly recovering now:
169-5
Piolet 24
Maddy 12
Partnership of 34
Lead 108 43 overs left today.
At Taunton Somerset all out leaving Derby 244 to win. Tight finish there where i suppose Somerset now favourites????
-
177-6
Piolet Ct Hussey b Fletcher 30 - Highest championship score.
Maddy 14
Barker in
Lead 116
Piolet didn't need to play that short ball and was caught on the boundary.
-
Pears lost by 8 wkts - Essex 52-2
Reece Topley 11-85 in the match
Sussex 116-9 req another 286 - looking like Durhams title they will be 14.5 points ahead of Yorkshire each with 3 to play
-
Just said on the cricket thread, Warwickshire are my home county, but as I live in County Durham, and watch them 4-5 times a season, I'll be very pleased to see Durham win it.
-
Tea Bears 188-6 79 Overs (32 left today)
Maddy 20
Barker 5
Lead 127
Game will, i suggest, now go into a 4th day. Notts trying to get through their overs quickly and in fact bowled a 33rd over in middle session, so a 97 over day at least.
Surrey require a further 262 with 4wkts left v Middx at Tea
Derby 13-0 requiring another 231 v Somerset not Tea there yet.
-
Notts have taken the 2nd new Ball immediately after 80th over completed. Luke Fletcher having first use.
190-6 now Maddy added 2 to his score.
Could be interesting now runs could come a bit quicker but also wkts could fall. Barker 2 more 192-6 - 131 lead
-
200 up
208-6
Barker 18
Maddy 27
Lead 147 27 overs left in the day
-
208-7
Barker Ct Read B Fletcher 18
Maddy 27
With that catch it is 746 catches for Read the record no. of catches for Nottinghamshire.
-
155 lead
216-7 Patel 7
Maddy 28
84 overs so 27 left in the day
Worringly - currently Woakes will not bowl in the 2nd innings due to injury. I suppose that may change overnight.
-
Derby 49-0 so require 195 now - so i suppose thats one target out the way.
I said 84 overs above that should have been 88 which in fact is now 89 so 22 left in the day - 221-7 lead 160
Samit Patel just dropped Maddy. His 3rd drop in this innings!!!
-
A 50 partnership and we'd have a 200 lead pretty much, no pressure Maddy and Patel....
-
237-8 91.2 Overs
Patel Ct Hussey B Gurney 16
Maddy 40
McKay in with Ateeq Javid as runner to join Maddy and Westwood as runner. I wonder when last time this happened.
Lead 176
McKay being a left hander means confusion Javid at point and Maddy at square leg as not facing.
-
A 50 partnership and we'd have a 200 lead pretty much, no pressure Maddy and Patel....
Well done!!!!!
Derby lost 2 wkts 58-2
-
247-8 95.5 overs
Maddy 50 (121) 6 x 4's
McKay 0
Lead 186
-

Hales just dropped a dolly at slip off McKay - bit of luck at last
Lead 193
Maddy 53, McKay 2
Brought spin back on 99.1 overs gone
-
200 lead
261-8 101.3 overs
McKay 3
Maddy 59
-
thanks for all the updates - they are much appreciated.
this is shaping up to be a good game if the rain holds off tomorrow (and we can find a couple of fit bowlers to support Jeets !)
-
267-9 104.1 Overs

Stumps at Trent Bridge because :
Bears 271 All Out

Notts require 211 to win
A great days play but maybe Bears fortunate to have such a lead with Samit Patel dropping 3 and Hales one....but as they say ..That's Cricket
Now it's all in the hand of the weather gods!!!
-
Weather looks a washout on Friday - highly likely to be a draw now which isn't a disaster. Can't quite believe our bad luck this Summer!
-
Stumps at Taunton as well where Derby are 127 - 4 requiring a further 117 tomorrow
Surrey 212-9 require 173 only 1 wkt left not stumps so i assume Middx claimed the extra 30 minutes.
Interesting day day tomorrow at Taunton if weather holds off.
-
Could have been an interesting day, Nott's needing 211 to win on a 4th day wicket. Would have made them favourites, with our depleted line-up, but it could have gone either way.
Happy with a draw though.
-
Could have been an interesting day, Nott's needing 212 to win on a 4th day wicket. Would have made them favourites, with our depleted line-up, but it could have gone either way.
Happy with a draw though.
I agree, a Notts victory would have left us on the edge of the relegation scrap.
-
Certainly no play before Lunch.
So i'm listening to Somerset v Derby who are 177-5 Chanderpaul 44 and Hughes 23 require 67 more.
Interesting though Kieswetter replaced behind stumps by Alex Barrow. Kieswetter now on to bowl his off-breaks.
-
Chanderpaul 51
Derby now 194 - 5
Hughes 33 Derby Req 50 more
In ODI in Belfast Scotland are 58 - 3 14 overs
Freddie Coleman was b Sorensen 10
-
Derbyshire 195-6
Hughes LBW Leach 33
Cha-paul 51
Still require 49.
Gonna be close from a purely selfish point as a Bear i suppose i want Somerset to win but as a Midlander who likes to go to Derby would like to see Derby do it.
48 reqd now Poynton off mark
Kieswetter experiment lasted 3 overs for 14 runs
-
Squaky Bum time at Taunton

Derbyshire require another 28 runs with 2 wickets remaining
Exciting stuff.
-
Latest at Trent Bridge is that covers were taken off about an hour ago umpires were gonna inspect again at 12:30 but prior to that drizzle once again started so covers are now on. Lunch interval has been taken. Forecast to clear up later this afternoon.
Notts will be hoping to get 30-35 overs i suspect.
Meanwhile at Taunton it is now:
225-8 19 req'd but Chanderpaul was dropped a couple of overs ago by Meschede. His bum obviously squeaked!
-
Must be regulations but for fcuk's sake - Derby require 6 Somerset require 2 wickets and umpires take 'em off for lunch at 12:45, when lunch should have been 12:30....just don't understand the logic!!!
-
Derby have beaten Somerset by 2 wickets
244-8
Chanderpaul 74 and Groenewald 6
That gives Derby 3 wins (same as Bears) and 116 points 2 Games left - 1 v Bears at home
Somerset 2 wins 115 points 2 Games left
Surrey 1 win 100 points 3 games left 1 v Bears away
So all in Bears own hands really - if todays game ends in a draw Bears on 147 points and Notts 123 points - if Bears lose....well we don't wanna go there!
-
Definitely no play before tea in the Bears match.
-
They have now had tea and still pitch covered. No chance now i'm just waiting for the official statement....even if it stops raining then light will be an issue.
Notts are gonna need a minimum 30 overs and there's no way that's happening.
That's it Twitter - Match abandoned 8 points for us 10 Notts.
-
No Bears game this week but some important games involving relegation battle plus the Championship.
During the course of the day i will up-date scores particularly in Derby (4-0) v Durham and Somerset v Surrey (2-0 2.1 overs) as Bears aren't mathematically safe.
-
Derby 33-0 (10.1) v Durham Durham won toss

Be difficult for Yorkshire or Durham to win looking at the forecast for Friday and Saturday .
-
I just don't want Derby or Surrey or Somerset to win either. Keep the 3 of them below Bears going into last round of games
-
Hope I don't jinx them now but Derbyshire are putting up a good fight against Durham, 206-2. Dig in.
-
I bloody knew it, 206-3 as soon as I hit 'post'.
-
249-7 now derby but the forecast suggests neither game will have a positive result - yorks may claw a couple of points back but Durham firmly in the box seat .
-
My fault, I jinxed them.

Durham 157-2 v Derby 298

Durham will need up score fast runs this afternoon before the rain arrives and hope to get derby out cheaply in their 2 nd innings if they get enough play tomorrow .
With both teams desperate to win it will be interesting to see if there are any declarations to force a result .
-
Well Durham aint going that quick, are now: So just 3 per over i would have thought would have pressed on now. Are they assuming Yorks gonna draw so are just ensuring they get at least as many bonus points. A risky business.
Durham 179-2 (60) Derby 298
Surrey 195 & 79-2 Lead by 14
Sussex v Yorks Play due to start at 14:10
Middx v Notts Still raining
Worc 122-3
-
Risky ploy from Durham- derby really need to try and go for a win so maybe they are expecting a friendly declaration - i see durham very much in the box seat as things stand .
Would still expect both games to end in a draw but durham have more chance of a win than Yorkshire.

Unlikely to be any more play at Taunton and they reckon heavy rain will hit Derby around 15:30. We will see. Still no play at Lords
-
Somerset will expect to beat Surrey tomorrow which would put derby under huge pressure to chase a win against Durham - interesting , but as pgw says the weather is closing in .
-
Still not playing at Taunton.
Yorks moved on to 320-9 6 bonus points but only 28 ahead......Draw all over it
Durham 247-4 (89.3) Currently 4 points should certainly get another 2.
Still no play today at Lords and raining in Worcester now(189/5)

Only game in progress is:
Sussex 291 & 4-1 Yorks 326

With the exception of Middx v Notts game all games have started this morning, but with the exception of perhaps Somerset all will be draws. Latest:
Derby 298 Durham 287-6
Middx 96-0 Notts 428 No Play so far
Surrey 195 & 137-6 Somerset 260....Somerset need quick wkts to get a win.
Sussex 292 & 166-3 Yorks 326
Pears 217-6 Hants 428
All these results will do is confirm Bears safety not that they were in any real danger and i imagine aid Notts survival.
-
Somerset should win easily now which means derby really need to go for a win - maybe a run chase and set durham a target is thir best hope of survival - could be an interesting game .
Yorkshire looking a spent force at Sussex so all eyes on derby and Durham .
-
Not sure Durham will be too happy with Sussex cutting a deal with Yorkshire, if Yorkshire go on to win the game!!!

Bears have named a 14 man squad for last home game of season tomorrow v Surrey:
Chopra, Ambrose, Atkinson W/K, Barker, Chambers, Clarke, Evans, Gordon, Javid, Patel, Porterfield, Rankin, Westwood & Woakes.
Ambrose and Clarke if they play they can only bat injuries will not allow them to keep wkt or bowl.
-
Warwickshire won toss and put Surrey in 2nd over Woakes bowling 4-0 2 overs - 4 byes.
Team is: Chopra, Westwood, Javid, Evans, Woakes, Clarke, Barker, Patel, Atkinson (w/k) Chambers, Gordon.
Rankin not released by England and Porterfield and Ambrose left out the 14.

Maybe take 5 or 6 quickies which could be obviously Broad & Anderson, Bresnan if fit plus Tremlett, Rankin & Onions just take 1 spinner and stick 2nd spinner(Tredwell or Monty or Lancs kid name gone in performance squad plus Finn who are in Australia anyway and can be called upon.. I do believe Finn will miss out.

His age is a slight concern but his form is so good that he's hard to ignore, he's also the only genuine alternative if Jimmy is out, all the other bowlers in form are seamers really. I agree on Finn, he looks like he's struggling with changing his action to avoid clipping the wicket.

Durham 18-2 since lunch - wickets tumbling perhaps there is something wrong with the pitch here. Yorks 81-2

It boils my piss when this happens. Ben Stokes is due to play for Durham in the current match replacing Arshad. Broad & Swann are playing for Notts in the CB40 final at the weekend yet we can't play Rankin. Are we too soft with our former coach and his senior involvement with the England hierachy?
-
I didn't know about Stokes...but just checked and you're right...it's fcuking annoying - 3rd Durham wicket fallen Arshad was due in according to card but have sent Richardson in before him so i assume Stokes not far away. All teams want to finish as high as possible with Middx playing their last game this week Bears had possibility of getting up to 3rd which conceivably may not happen now due to Rankin factor.
Durham 25-3 , raining at Headingley with Yorks 90-2. Still off at Edgbaston although not actually raining but light not good - thats 1/2 mile from ground. Haven't gone due to weather forecast!

It strikes me that we are far too accommodating when England come calling. Maybe we want to protect our International venue status? Povey will always deny it but I'm certain that they're linked.

Perhaps one of the reasons Bairstow struggled to find his form against Australia is that he hadn't been allowed to play any competitive cricket for Yorkshire for the 5 weeks leading up to the first Test. Surely playing competitively would have been better preparation than hours in the nets?

Further inspection at Edgbaston 15:10. Have taken Tea.
Durham 78-6 so level
Pissing down at mine so no chance at Edgbaston....i would imagine for the day now.
Durham getting a lead now up to 100-6 35.5
In the Champions League T20 Otago Volts won by 8 wkts Brendon McCallum 80+ off 69.
Next game between Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kandurata Morons about to start...Hyderabad winning toss and fielding......ooops that should read Maroons - they play in a nice claret and blue kit!!!
-
Play called off for the day at Edgbaston. Still raining at Headingley
111-6 at Durham
Kandurata Villa are 43-2 6.5 overs. They have let 2 in at the back i'm afraid!
-
Started again at Headingley - Yorks 97-2 Durham up to 141-6 a lead of 63, They could almost declare and bowl Notts out again tonight!!!
-
Yorks 3 down 102-3
Mustard got his 50 Durham 152-6

188-6 Durham and marching towards the title !
Any hopes of a substandard pitch seem to have evaporated with this century plus stand.

Fair play to Durham , they have had a flying finish to the season and deserve the crown.

Off for bad light with 4 overs left.
A point to note: Jack Birkenshaw pitch inspector is at Durham but he will not make a decision tonight he will remain in Chester Le Street for tomorrows play. I imagine the partnership of 121 between Mustard & Collingwood may have some bearing on his decision.

Wouldnt worry if i was in the Durham camp- as you say the partnership seems to suggest no problems - Durham will wrap up he title tomorrow, leaving sky the rights to show the final game when all issues will have been settled .

For some reason, The Bears' attack reminds me of Villa's defence.
-
At least we've finally got a bowling bonus point, edging closer to safety.

Notts have a lead with 4 wkts left 15 ahead...Notts 78 & 193-6 Durham 256
Surrey 319-3 83.2 overs - Gonna piss 5 batting points at this rate.

If Durham don't win tonight could be in brown stuff if the weather up there is the same as down here tomorrow.

Durham marching towards the title and good luck to them - 3rd championship in 6 years.

No worries weather wise - the championship is theirs - this is day 2 , showers forecast tomorrow but a lovely day on Friday though I'm sure it will be over long before then.
At the moment notts are effectively 24-8
-
57-8 now - unsure how many overs left in the day but i assume they can claim the extra 30 minutes but if they do that before they have Notts all out they will then lose 10 minutes for changeover.....they will have to go some to win tonight - David Hussey going well 46 off 55. I hope it pisses down all day tomorrow....be a bag of nerves Friday - make it interesting. If weather is as nice as Eastie says not a real problem i suppose.
As i write 9th wkt gone - 57-9!!!!
What a waste of a post!!!!

Durham apparently haven't claimed the extra half hour....got 1 over tonight from which they scored 7.
62 required tomorrow.
Thought that the Durham marketing department wanted to sell tickets for tomorrow!!!!
I hope it pisses down for 2 days then money grabbing arseholes....if it's true!!!!
Surrey 398-5 with Patel bowling last over of the day....so score 2 and declare over night.......scored a single off 1st ball 399-5 and a single off 2nd - 400 up (Max batting points) Stumps 341 runs in day with hour lost.
-
Durham end on 7-0 chasing 62 more for the title - could be showers tomorrow but with 2 days to go the weather will not stop them .
-
Inspection at 1.15pm ay Edgbaston, could do without playing. A draw will do fine and Surrey are 400/5.
-
Play due to start at 3pm for Warwickshire, Surrey have declared at 400/5.
-
Durham have won the title 69-2 17 overs.
The sun is shining over here now so hopefully play will get underway at 15:00.......not a cloud in the sky at present.
-
Gary Wilson a wicket keeper has opened the bowling for Surrey....f--ing joke!!!
See who opens up at the other end.....declaration bowling or what!!!
6-0 off first over
Rory Burns bowling at other end another keeper by trade. Neither of these are supposed to be keeping in this game that is Davies.
Both Tremlett & Linley are fielding - now 8-0

Chopra 1000 Championship runs for the season now - 14-0 in 3rd over.
Are we gonna declare on say 50 and them forfeit their 2nd innings and try and bowl us out.
If Surrey forfeit all their bowling points we will need 1 point out of Derby game to ensure safety.
Injury jinx has struck again Atkinson has injured a finger and will not keep wkt in 2nd innings. Porrerfield will keep.
43 overs to be bowled in day

320 behing.
Bears hold all the cards here but i can't work out what is happening. Surrey must win so i suppose Chopra has said we want 'X' or we don't play ball in a set up run chase.
If Surrey do 'Y' then i suppose we shut up shop. 82-0 14 overs so 29 left today, do we declare tonight and Surrey bat some tonight. Burns back on up Pavilion end.
-
91-0 17 overs
Chopra 50 (60)
Westwood 32(43)
The searing pace of Burns has broken Chopra's back

bat not back!!!!
-
Right if Bears score 200 that gives us a batting point without conceding a bowling point add that to our bowling point gives us 149.
Even if we lose this game Surrey can only total 148 we play Derby next if they won and we were pointless Derby can only get 144 therefore we are safe!!!!
Oh well that's fcuked my thoughts Bears have declared 120 - 0 - having tea now. Chopra 69, Westwood 42
Lets see what Surrey do now!
-
Surrey have forfeited their 2nd innings, just over a day for us to get 281 runs to win.
-
Right it is now saying that Surrey have forfeited their 2nd innings so Bears require 281 to win.
That is very generous as nearly 120 overs left in the match. Decent forecast tomorrow. As i said earlier Chopra holds all the cards. Pressure on Surrey to bowl us out. Wont be a draw now.
Only working till noon tomorrow i can see a last visit of the season beckoning, but remember we may only have 10 batsmen if Atkinson can't bat!!!

-
Meaker now struggling with a slight ham string strain - may well hust see him for a few overs when new ball taken which is due in about 7 overs, but may not be a long spell, i imagine Tremlett will take it with Linley if injury is too much.

Thanks for all the updates esp PGW. What can The Bears do to be more consistent next year? I heard we are after Jos Buttler would that be enough?

Well done the Bears! So Surrey are down despite taking our (the Pears') best players.
-
Bears win by 6 wickets.
yay...COYB
-
Great win.......YOU BEARS!!!! Great knock from Javid - him and Evans have really come of age this season. Win is very good considering such a patched up team. Imagine if we had our first choice team playing now.......we'd sweep the board!
-
Well done Warwick, such a shame for Surrey... hahahaha!
-
Great win for the Bears and if we'd had better luck with injuries and international call ups we'd have challenged for the title. All ifs I know but we have been desperately unlucky.
As for Surrey it's incredible that a side that has contained at one point or another this season Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, Kevin Pietersen and Hashim Amla has gone down. Maybe they should concentrate on home grown players rather than showcase signings. Laurie Evans is thriving at Edgbaston and didn't get a look in at the Oval.
-

Credit to Chambers as well, for sticking around with Woakes.

I think if Sussex lost their last 4 wickets before getting to 250 and we got to 300 by 110 overs and then took 9 Derbyshire wickets in the 110 overs, then we would be dead level with Sussex in the table (depending on a win, loss or draw).
-
How come they're still not playing at Edgbaston? Says 'Start Delayed by Rain', but there's hardly been a drop since about 8am??

Its @ Derby mate but still a valid question.......PGW do you know ?
-
I was thinking it was at Brum, oh well (d'oh).
Nott's is similarly rained off until at least lunch time, so maybe the weather is worse up there.
-
Nott's all out for 406 against Somerset. I make them a point ahead (after bonus points) of Somerset at the moment, with Somerset still to bat for the first time.
Of course they're both safe unless Derbyshire beat us.
Sussex all out for 328, so unless they fail to win (they have a lead of 164 runs), then we can't finish above them.
Warwickshire 325/8, Derbyshire only got 2 bowling points.
-
Woakes and Chambers have both scored their highest First Class scores.
Chambers' first ever 50* and Woakes 141* (previous best 136*).
Also 150+ partnership now, for the 9th wicket!!
-
Chambers out for 58, with Woakes 2 away from 150. If I was him I'd be trying to get them quickly, as Boyd Rankin is his batting partner!
-
Woakes 152 not out, Bears declare at 391/9.
Somerset already 14/2 off 11 overs. So Nott's should be safe you would think, regardless of whether Derbyshire turn our game around.
-
Well batted Chris Woakes. That'll learn them England selectors!
-
Keep saying it, I think Woakes will end up being a better batsman than he is bowler. In the opposite way to Flintoff, who started out being a batsman who could bowl a bit and ended up being much better at bowling.
Derbyshire 5/2, although Chanderpaul has just come to the crease.
-

That's been my thoughts on Woakes for a while, he seems to have the mental strength to be a good middle order batsman.

I was at Edgbaston for all 4 days of the last home game against Surrey, and he was not at all happy bowling. He seems to have increased his pace at the expense of movement from the seam, but that was a thankless wicket on which to bowl.
-
If we can get Shiv Chanderpaul out cheaply then we're in with a good shout. It's a big ask though!
-
33/5, Barker's 3rd wicket. Chanderpaul still there though. Can see them being all out for 100 and Chanderpaul will be 50 not out....
-
Durham - Sussex game has lost a lot of play today due to bad light, maybe there could be a draw in that game after all. Still think Sussex are big favourites to win it though.

The turn around in the Bears Championship performances since the start of August has been remarkable. If it wasn't for injuries, call ups and on occasions the weather we'd have challenged Durham for the title.
That's it no more domestic cricket for the Bears until 2014.

I thought you got 18 points (excl. bonus points) for a win nowadays? With 3 for a draw and 8 for a tie.
16 for a win plus potentially 8 bonus points 5 batt 3 x bow
Tie 8plus bonus points
Draw 3 plus bonus points

Goes to show how well Javid and Evans have batted this year, as well as Chopra. Woakes should be a bit higher up the order for us, ahead of Clarke I would say.

I'm in the Keaton Jennings/Michael Richardson fan club. They're giving us just a snifter of finishing in 3rd place.
-
Thanks to PGW for his magnificent impersonation of Ceefax during the season. Well appreciated.
-
Thanks very much PGW, excellent service. Now I agree with RR62
c'mon Durham 304/ 6 140 infront.
If they can hold on till close maybe another 35 runs
Then see what tomorrow brings
-
Over 200 partnership now.
Thanks PGW!
-
Cheers all, yes Durham have finally come to the party at stumps they have a lead of 216 with 3 wickets in hand. If they could somehow bat beyond lunch tomorrow would be great.
A draw will do Bears to hold onto 3rd....more prize money!!!

I will post later - these were just the averages of today's xi - there are many other of the walking wounded missing also.
I was just looking at the video highlights of days 1 & 2 and the drop by Footitt of Woakes is ridiculous and costly.

Well done pgw, a wonderful innings :)

The race for third is continuing at a pace, looking more like Bears although i would say currently Sussex are slight favourites but maybe not if Durham get through till lunch:
Durham currently 414-7 a lead of 250......Arshad going barmy hit 3 x 6's already this morning.
Jennings 120
Arshad 65
Another note young schoolboy Sibley is out for Surrey b Sidebottom for 242.
-
Bloody hell, a schoolboy and he's scored 242!! Bet they wish they'd played him earlier in the season now.
Durham still carrying on, top ever scores for both batsmen now.
-
Kieton Jennings ct Brown b Nash 127
Arshad 83
Onions in now
Lead 280
This Arshad fellow doesn't even warrant a place in the Durham section of the 'Playfair' annual. Local lad from Binley, made his debut some time in August. As i said that Arshas ct Joyce b Zaidi 83
444-9. I was hoping they could bat till lunch to take some time out of the game.
Rushworth in now who needs 2 runs to get to 100 for the season.....may not last too long. Just got a 4 so got his 100 for season

surely a lead pushing 300 is good for a side with a bowler in the form Onions is. This one looks like all 3 results would be possible from now, I guess it depends o the pitch though.

458 all out lead of 294

458 All Out
Sussex require 295 in 75 or 76 overs minus Michael Yardy who apparently is ill. The bowler Zaidi also has a broken finger. With Luke Wright and Matty Prior batting it is possible if they treat as a 1 dayer.
Nothing to lose draw no good.
Will be good listening for the rest of the day!!!
-
Sussex away in their 2nd innings 8-0
Onions (69 Wkts) and Rushworth (54) opening the bowling as usual who require a further 5 wickets between them to break the Durham opening partnership of Harmison and Brown who took 127 wickets between them in a county season not so long ago......so come on you pair get going!!!
-
295 to win is very tough to get in the 4th day of a match. Intriguing game.
-
At lunch Sussex require 252 in a minimum of 62 overs @ 4.06 per over

Durham 67-0
228 more off 55 overs req'd @4.15 per over
Going well are Nash & Wells
-
Durham 131-0 now 32 overs 43 overs left requiring further 164 @ 3.81

Not looking good

Finally Sussex have lost a wicket - probably too late for us though.

Yes spot on Eastie considering the decimated bowling attack.......the batting worries me a lot but good signs from Evans and Javid towards the end of the season

Simon Brown, left arm seamer, totally forgot about him. Wasn't he a one cap wonder.......hold on, google,........yep he was.
550 first class wickets as well. Impressive.

Bell and Woakes on the pitch at half time today, according to a Bears fan sitting next to me.
-
Buttler has joined Lancashire. I would have liked to see him sign for the Bears.
-
Trotty awarded a benefit year in 2014!

I see Jeetan Patel won both the Players Player and Supporters Player of the Year awards last night!
-
Took quite a lot of wickets and averaged about 30 didn't he?
-
Took quite a lot of wickets and averaged about 30 didn't he?
Yes - in the Championship it was 31.29 with the bat and 30.02 with the ball.
-
I was a tad disappointed today to see that Maurice Chambers has declined Bears offer of a 2 year contract and decided to sign 2 year deal at Northants. Competition for places would have been good next season if all were fit.
-
Stef Piolet went out to Sussex on loan last season but was then recalled by Bears due to injury crisis. Well he has now been released from the last year
of his contract and yesterday signed a one year deal with a return to Sussex. Good luck.

In the NatWest t20 Blast, Warwickshire are to be called Birmingham Bears.
-
That'll get the members tutting into their cucumber sandwiches.
-
See Warwickshire are to be called the Birmingham Bears for next years T20. What do their fans think of that? For many I guess not much.
Who was it who thought we ought to be called Birmingham Villa to help promote the region?
-
To me they will still just be ''The Bears'' to me whatever format of the game we are playing, i certainly won't be singing any version of ''Come on you Birmingham Bears''.
-
This has nothing do to with Warwickshire owing the council a shit load of money.
I heard Povey on C&W and he was asked if he had asked the members about the name change
'No' was the answer.
25% of members don't live in Birmingham, way to go fella.
You could see this happening when they got rid of the County membership and don't get me started on losing test matches.

Warwickshire to be Birmingham Bears in T20 Blast
Warwickshire have confirmed they will be known as the Birmingham Bears in next summer's T20 Blast tournament.
The county will still be known by their traditional name in both four-day and 50-over formats.
Bears chief executive Colin Povey told the club website: "Adopting the Birmingham Bears name presents a great opportunity to engage even more closely with fans at the heart of the city.
"Birmingham and Edgbaston has been the club's home since 1886."
He added: "Asian families, businessmen and women working in the city's commercial districts and local cricket clubs are three particular audiences the club is seeking to work with more next season."
Five of the Bears' T20 fixtures at Edgbaston will be played on Friday nights.
And Councillor Ian Ward, deputy leader of Birmingham City Council, added: "The Birmingham Bears T20 team is an incredibly exciting proposition that can unite sports fans across the city on Friday evenings next summer.
"The club and the redeveloped stadium provide so many great opportunities for the local communities to play and watch world-class cricket here in Birmingham, and I'm looking forward to seeing people get behind the Bears."
-
They have changed the name to unite a city of cricket watchers? Piss off!
We are still Gloucestershire Gladiators. Why? We couldnt think of another name beginning with G.

I thought the twenty20 tournament in England was played by 18 COUNTIES..i didnt realise Birmingham has suddenly become a county!
I find it quite condescending of the ECB that they feel they have to 'pigeon hole' the different forms of cricket. 4 day cricket will start on a sunday so 'grandad can take grandchildren'... and 20/20 will be played on a Friday so the 'laaaaads' can have a piss up! Its quite pathetic really and patronizes the real cricket fan.
-
It's all the council's fault....
Povey says Council asked for name change (http://www.birminghampost.co.uk/incoming/colin-povey-warwickshire-would-quit-6375961)
But the club agreed.
-
Its still Warwickshire and the idea of using city names for 20/20 has been explored before. maybe warwickshire got good feed back. can't see how getting the money in, and some new ideas in trying to do that, is such a bad thing.

Did anyone notice the article in yesterdays Birmingham Mail - an event of potentiallyy catastrophic proportions to the immediate future of the Bears.
Graeme Welch has applied for the 'Elite Sporting Director' role at Derbyshire CC. Which is his former club, going there after being released by Warwickshire so will have a bond with them as he has with us. This is a man who has worked wonders at WCCC as our bowling coach, developing the likes of Chris Wright into possible future England bowler, he has got Rankin into the England set up. He will be a massive loss to us.....he of course may not get the job,if so he says business as usual, but he cites that he wants to be the top man at a county set up where i suppose at WCCC he is number 2 to Dougie Brown.
Watch this space!!!

I am not surprised by this development as he applied for Ashley Giles; job last year and was disappointed when he lost out to Dougie Brown. It will be a blow if he gets the gig, though.
In better news, Chris Woakes has signed a new contract:
Nuneaton News (http://www.nuneaton-news.co.uk/England-star-Woakes-new-Warwickshire-deal/story-20316172-detail/story.html)
WARWICKSHIRE and England all-rounder Chris Woakes has signed a new two-year contract at Edgbaston.
Woakes, 24, has been with the Bears his whole career and made his Test debut against Australia at The Oval this summer.
"I've been at Warwickshire for 13 years, so the opportunity to extend my contract was something I was very keen to do," Woakes said.
Woakes is a product of the club's development programme and has scored more than 3,000 runs and taken 290 wickets since making his first-class debut in 2006.
He helped the county win the 40-over competition in 2010 and the County Championship two years later, when he averaged over 70 with the bat and picked up 47 wickets.
He made his limited-overs debut for England in a Twenty20 international against Australia in Adelaide in 2011, hitting the winning run in a last-ball victory.
A one-day international debut followed against the same opposition soon after, but Woakes had to wait until the final game of last summer's Ashes series before winning his first Test cap.
It proved a steep learning curve as he made scores of 25 and 17 not out, but only took one wicket at a cost of 96 runs, not enough for a place in the current Ashes series in Australia.
-
Chris Woakes has signed up for Sydney Thunder in the Australian Big Bash 20/20 league which starts this coming Friday.
He will only play in the first two games on:
21/12 v Sydney 6 er's at the SCG
27/12 v Adelaide Strikers at the ANZ
Presumably he then leaves to go and get ready to captain the England Lions.
Not too sure which TV company is covering it over here!
-
Sky are showing some Big Bash I think.
-

You're right Sky Sports 4 showing Saturdays game, i aint going to Stoke so i will certainly have Big Bash on....i daresay more exciting than Stoke v Villa!!

I hope the Bears get a big name signing in next year, at least for the Twenty20. If they want to get bigger crowds there are better ways to do it than by just changing the name.

Meaning Evil (http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/cricket/chris-wright-wants-make-difference-6430531)
Chris Wright is aiming to be the catalyst for a serious championship challenge from Warwickshire next season after taking an important step forward in his recovery from a stress fracture in his back
Fast-bowler Wright is at last back bowling again following the injury which ruled him out of the second half of last season.
His absence was a big blow to the Bears as a team and to the player himself as it stalled his progress into the England Lions and Performance Programme set-ups.
But Wright intends to be back better than ever in 2014 – and is now working in the nets again with Bears bowling coach Graeme ‘Pop’ Welch.
“I have had my first bowling session with Pop,” he said. “It was nothing too strenuous but a good step to take.
“I thought I would be a little bit nervous when it came to bowling again but it wasn’t the case.
“The fracture has healed, that is the main thing, so now we just have to take it steady and be sensible. It is a question of building up towards the pre-season trip to Barbados.
“It has been frustrating but injuries happen and you have just got to deal with them.
“The positive to come from all this is that there is no reason why I shouldn’t come back better and stronger than ever.
“I can’t wait for next season to start and I know the other lads feel the same way because we were under-achievers last season.
“Finishing fourth in the championship was a decent effort taking into account all the injuries we had but, with the players we have got, we feel we should be challenging to win it.
“That’s what we want to do next season and hopefully I can make that difference.”

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/25367325)
Chris Woakes to lead England Lions tour to Sri Lanka
Chris Woakes will captain a 15-man England Lions squad to tour Sri Lanka in February and March 2014.
The Warwickshire all-rounder, 24, is one of four men in the squad to have been capped at Test level.
Woakes, Yorkshire's Jonny Bairstow and Lancashire's Simon Kerrigan featured in the last home Ashes series during the summer, while Nottinghamshire's James Taylor faced South Africa in 2012.
Middlesex batsman Sam Robson has gained his first England Lions call-up.
Australia-born Robson, 24, qualified for England on residency grounds in August.
Woakes's selection as captain has been announced two days after he signed a two-year contract to extend his stay at Warwickshire.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Bairstow, 24, is with England's Ashes squad in Australia as cover for Matt Prior.
England selector James Whitaker said: "We believe that this Lions squad contains an excellent mix of players who have had international exposure, combined with emerging young talent that we hope can flourish on this tour to Sri Lanka.
The Lions will arrive in Sri Lanka on 27 January and play two three-day matches in Colombo against a Sri Lanka A Team Emerging Players XI.
Mark Robinson's squad will then face three four-day matches against the Sri Lanka A team one each in Kandy, Dambulla and Colombo.
Whitaker added: "The opportunity to train and play in the sub-continent will be an invaluable experience and under the guidance of coach Mark Robinson we are convinced all the players will learn a great deal."
England Lions squad: Chris Woakes (Warwickshire, capt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Scott Borthwick (Durham), Varun Chopra (Warwickshire), Ben Foakes (Essex), James Harris (Middlesex), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Simon Kerrigan (Lancashire), Alex Lees (Yorkshire), Tymal Mills (Essex), James Overton (Somerset), Sam Robson (Middlesex), James Taylor (Nottinghamshire), James Vince (Hampshire).

It will be a top Indian I hope. After changing the name they need to get the punters in
-
Woakesy had a losing start to his short Big Bash career today he scored 8* off 9 in a total of 166 -6 then took 1-34 off his 4 overs. Sydney 6ers got them with i think 10 balls to spare..
-
I hope it doesn't prove too disastrous but Graeme Welch has just signed a 3 yr deal to become Derbyshire's performance director. So leaves us looking for a bowling coach.
Disappointing as Welch is undoubtedly the best around, can't say i'm too surprised as he played at Derbyshire for a good number of years.
I just hope we can get someone in sharpish so that they are bedded in prior to us going to Barbados for our usual pre-season get together.

Alan Richardson confirmed as new Bears bowling coach. Good appointment I think!

Alan Richardson confirmed as new Bears bowling coach. Good appointment I think!
Yes i think there must have been a fair bit going on behind the scenes for this to happen so quickly. I agree though could be a good acquisition, an ex - bear 5 years at the club from 1999-2004, admittedly a fair while ago. He didn't waste any time accepting either, he was due to play his last season in cricket for the Pears this coming season. He will have learnt a fair bit from his travels around the county circuit (i hope).
I'm happy anyway.
-
As a Pear gutted to lose Richardson, looks like Moeen will be leading the batting & bowling attack next season - need Ajmal to show up now ;-)
Be interesting if he Richardson gets the full talent out of Richard Jones - a wicket taker who is a little expensive can always improve his control so the basics are there.
Not expecting promotion bid for the Pears this year now :-)

I think that you need the water to drain away before you even contemplate cricket at New Road!

From the Birmingham Mail (http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/cricket/warwickshire-line-up-alan-richardson-6479605):
In terms of bowling coaching, Warwickshire have lost a sorcerer (in the last four years, Welch pretty much turned all the Bears’ seam bowlers into England material) and gained an apprentice.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Bears and am proud to have been part of the coaching group that has developed one of the most potent bowling attacks in the country.”
That bowling attack still has that potency, of course, and remains arguably the strongest in county cricket.
But how will it cope, individually and collectively, without the man who, to a large extent, built it?

I think the Mail have pretty much nailed it.....Richardson is the apprentice, shame he never had any time working with Welch....but can't have everything. As i said on an earlier post
i'm quite happy with the appointment.

Dougie Brown says Bears can cope with Test call-ups
Warwickshire chief hoping his side can keep clear of injuries this term
Dougie Brown is confident that Warwickshire will be able to cope with the crop of England calls likely to affect them next season.
And given a relatively clear run on the fitness front, unlike last year’s nightmare scenario, director of cricket Brown reckons his squad can challenge hard for trophies in 2014.
“We will be stretched again by international calls,” Brown said. “That’s fine – we expect that and we can cope with that.
“It would just be nice not to be stretched the other way too. Last season we used 25 players in the championship, more than any other side. Durham, the champions, used 16.
“That was due mainly to injuries but it’s not as if we are soft.
“Look at Oliver Hannon-Dalby batting for an hour with a broken arm down at Taunton. That summed up the courage and the fighting spirit that we have in the dressing room.
“But we were heavily affected with one injury after another, not least by losing the captain. Not only did we lose Jim Troughton the batsman but Jim Troughton the captain and that was a blow.
“But while other teams lose their captain and things go completely belly up, we dug in really well.
“Jim was a loss, make no mistake about that, but we fought through it and stayed really consistent in the championship.
“That is testament to the depth of our squad. It is depth that you need when you have players good enough to be called away to play for their country - and we have it.”

Don't forget to renew your membership before the end of the month for the discount , PGW!
I bought a 6 year membership when they were attempting to raise cash for the new stand. The deal was a no brainer, i think the coming season is the 4th season of the deal.
I had the spare cash at the time....redundancy!!!
But thanks for the reminder never the less!! Looking forward to the new season.....It has to be better than what i'm going through at the moment.

Jim Troughton: We are looking for a big improvement in our one-day cricket next season
Warwickshire captain Jim Troughton says format changes will benefit Bears
Captain Jim Troughton reckons changes to the limited-overs formats in county cricket next season will work in Warwickshire’s favour in both cases.
In 2014, the Twenty20 group matches will be contested mainly on ten successive Friday nights from May 23 when the Bears begin their campaign against Yorkshire at Edgbaston.
The ECB have switched to that schedule from a mid-summer block in an attempt to shore up the flagging T20 concept by making it a Friday-night “occasion”.
The longer one-day format, meanwhile, will revert to 50-overs-per-innings as, once again, 40-overs is trashed to bring the county game in line with international cricket.
Bears skipper Troughton is far from convinced about the merits of the 50-over game. But he believes the longer format will suit the Bears while the restructuring of Twenty20 could also have a helpful side-effect for them in that the extended timespan will make it harder for other counties to hire overseas ‘big guns’ for the whole programme.
“I have reservations about 50-over cricket as a product,” Troughton said, “not just in county cricket but internationally.
“For years they have been trying to find ways to make the middle ten overs of a 50-over innings more interesting. Why not just get rid of them and have 40 overs?
“But the longer the format the more it will play into our way of playing with our seam attack. Our four-day attack is very strong with two bouncers an over allowed and 50-overs is a lot more suited to the way we play our cricket.
“We are looking for a big improvement in our one-day cricket next season. Our start last season was disappointing. We should have beaten Kent, which would have got us off to a good start, and once you get behind in that competition it’s difficult to get back in. This time we will be looking to hit the ground running.
“In terms of T20, the Friday-night schedule will change things - again possibly in our favour. I am not sure how many counties are going to have a second overseas player sticking around all week just to play every Friday. That might play into our hands as we have never had a second overseas player in that format.
“I think we could do well in Twenty20 this year. Losing the first three last season set us right back but then we went on a good run and played consistently well.”
It remains to be seen whether the switch to Friday evenings will generate the desired big crowds around the country. If it does, the format will have a future in county cricket. If not, the ECB might have to grudgingly embrace the notion that they are flogging a dead horse.
The players are certainly hoping the switch brings punters flocking in, having had to fulfil some truly moribund, sparsely-attended, rain-damaged T20s in recent years.
“I hope people turn up on Friday nights,” Troughton said. “People have been crying out for a regular slot where they know it’s T20 so hopefully we will get the crowds.
“It also means we will be playing the 50-over stuff in a block later in the season when the weather should be good so, in theory, it should all work well.”

I want to stay with the Bears - Laurie
Laurie Evans today insisted he is keen to remain a Warwickshire player long-term – despite recently turning down a contract extension.
Davies/PA Wire
Laurie Evans today insisted he is keen to remain a Warwickshire player long-term – despite recently turning down a contract extension.
Evans’ current deal is set to expire at the end of next season after he declined to sign one offering him two more years.
His decision sparked speculation among concerned Bears fans that the former Surrey batsman already has his sights set on a move back down south.
But the 26-year-old has revealed quite emphatically that that is not the case.
On the back of an excellent breakthrough season with Warwickshire in 2013, he feels settled with the county and is eager to stay.
He simply feels he is worth a bit more than what the county have offered.
“I don’t want to go anywhere,” Evans said. “I enjoy my cricket at Warwickshire, really enjoyed last season and just want to build on that this year and beyond and help the team challenge for trophies.
“But I was a little bit disappointed with the offer.
“I am 26 now and am at the stage of my career where I really need to settle down.
“Hopefully we can get something sorted out but the deal has got to be right for me because I want to put down some roots and, if I stay, buy a house in Birmingham to get some real stability behind me.
“Finance has never been a driving factor for me. I would never ever think of asking for more than I am worth. But I think I had a pretty good season last year with hopefully a lot more to come.”
Evans is adopting the same strategy as team-mate Keith Barker took two years ago.
Back then the all-rounder declined to sign the offered deal and promptly started the following season in brilliant form with a deluge of wickets that hugely increased his bargaining power.
Evans, who would certainly not be short of offers in the market place, already has a fair bit of bargaining power.
Warwickshire have a number of question marks over their top order with Ian Westwood struggling with an ankle injury, Jim Troughton needing to prove that his back can take the strain and William Porterfield facing his perpetual form issues.
It appears that the Bears’ top order can ill-afford to lose Evans. The question is, in the light of the club’s gargantuan debt, can they afford to keep him?
“I want to stay,” he said. “My feet are on the ground and I am not asking for anything silly. I’ll just keep working hard and hopefully scoring runs when the season comes round and then hopefully something will get sorted.
“The financial side of it is one aspect but by no means the most important one. The bottom line is I will always base my career decisions on what is best for my cricket.”

Shite. Forget my swoop for Pietersen idea.
In 2000 he travelled to England with a view to qualifying to play international cricket, having become frustrated with the quota selection system in South Africa. A century on trial for Warwickshire 2nds is not enough to win a contract at Edgbaston but, a year later, Pietersen signs for Nottinghamshire

Just read that Rikki Clarke and Ian Bell are in the upcoming IPL auction. I assume this means they'll miss the start of the county season?
Your assumption is spot on: they will miss up to 5 weeks if selected. Bell was up for sale last year but did not get picked.
