As a Arena car park season ticket holder, I have today received a letter from the club.
The main points of the letter are as follows.
"The club has been informed that starting in January 2013, the Aston Arena building (formerly known as the Aston Villa Leisure Centre) will be demolished. The process will take approximately 12 weeks ...."
Various information then about car park spaces at front not being available but the rear spaces still will be, and the entrance adjacent to the Aston Social will be unavailable impacting on traffic flow in and out on matchdays.
"You will have no doubt seen or heard numerous suggestions and possible Government backed plans for the site. We are certain that the demolition of the building is the first step towards alternative use for the site, which may or may not give Aston Villa the opportunity to retain use of the site for match-day parking. We remain in communication with the current land owners, and will ensure you are notified and updated accordingly."

Bring the Onion Fair back!

Isnt the land owned by Advantage West Midlands ? A quasi government dept
Probably be building social housing ?
-
Having been stuck for ages on numerous occasions trying to get out of that car park with both entrances, I can't imagine what sort of hell it will be like in future.....
-
Where are Team Fiat going to play their home matches from now on?
-

Advantage West Midlands were wound up some time ago and that land is unsuitable for housing due to pollution from the Expressway.
-
Does that mean no more concerts? Where are The Alarm and Then Jericho going to play?
-
Think they should build a big live music venue there as alternative to NEC Arena
-

I saw The The at the Leisure Centre, they were excellent.
-
I miss Granada Bingo myself.

When did Pollution ever come into the equation around housing schemes? See Walsall

Add Voice of The Beehive to that list, pretty sure we saw them play the Villa Leisure.

Probably around the same time as it was reckoned lead poisoning isn't a very good idea.

Saw Paul Weller there as well.
-
Best concert of my life was there - Manic Street Preachers just on the cusp of becoming huge. Supported by an unknown Catatonia.
-
I'm sure I've played squash in the villa leisure about 25 years ago or did I completely dream they had squash courts ?
-
Saw Fun Loving Criminals and Pop Will Eat Itselfthere. As well as Team Fiat/Birmingham Bullets.
-
When did the club sell it's stake in the Leisure Centre? I thought they owned a bit of it at one time.
Probably sold off to fund an ex-Chairman's retirement?
Have always said the club should have bought up all spare land between the ground and the railway when it became available and built retail and parking which would have paid for itself and provided parking on match days.
Unfortunately it all went before Randy came.

How come there are new houses alongside the M6 then ? Take Fort Dunlop as a prime example
-
I saw Deacon Blue twice, the Manics, the Levellers, Brain May and who could forget the legendary VFU meeting featuring, amongst others, Howard whatsits report and Carl Chinn reading out a letter from Brain Travers out of UB40.
I nipped out for a fag halfway through and had a chat with a rather grumpy man with a beard............
-
Saw Weller there several times, and Villa's away leg v Spartak Moscow in '83 (I think).
Best half-time pundits ever - Little and Cowans.
-
also saw Luton - Villa there.

Pretty sure one of HDE's final acts was to sell all the Serpentine Land for circa £8m
Your guess is as good as mine where that cash went

They did have squash courts there. I used them a few times because it was cheaper and also less stuck up then playing at Wyndley.

Thanks good to know my long term memory isn't completely shot.
-
I saw Crowded House there - twice - and I still have the t-shirt.
-
I remember some crazy rave there, couple of us staggered towards VP at 5am with intentions of running round on the pitch which obviously didn't happen.
-
Pretty sobering / scary when you can remember buildings being built and then torn down.
Gulp, I'm getting old.
-
its all part of this advanced manufacturing hub which will see the demo of eddies and aston social. Eric pickles was down there a few weeks back to endorse the councils plans
-
I bet Henri Taroni is involved somewhere
-
Saw The Pogues, minus Shane MacGowan - Joe Strummer filling in as lead vocals.
-

Is that still going to happen ? It must be private investment, as the council haven't got a pot to piss in.

I went to a rave there too, I would have been about 16 if I remember correctly which would put it around 1992. It was called Nemesis.
-
I also remember going to watch the Luton v Villa match there. Never saw most of the game as the quality was bloody awful.
-
Did Ricky Hill score?
-
I used to play squash there in the early 80s. I also remember going to see Kash the Flash Gill in a Kick Boxing World title fight there.

Are you sure The Aston Social is being demolished? Seems to be news to them.
-
Saw Carter USM, Ned's and Ocean Colour Scene there and tried to get in to see Blur supported by Pulp but sold out. Dodgy stewards were letting people sneak in for £25 cash but we weren't paying that!
Wanted to see Nirvana there but Kurt blew his head off before they had chance to play.
Went past it the other week and thought what a dump it had become. Used to get all the gigs whilst the Hummingbird was closed but then when it re-opened as the Carling Academy they lost all the gigs and revenue no doubt.
-
council just acquiring the land and preparing it for the market. they don't want to miss out another JLR expansion like at i54. also want to provide land for the supply chain.
could be wrong about social but the land was required last time i saw the plans
-
So back to the original point, this will cause a shortage of Matchday parking ?
-

Thats is right i brought a share only had about six months when Randy brought Villa.
We where asked to agree to the sale of the land and not long after my share was gone ;-(

How many spaces does the car park hold?

The land was originally sold to help cover the losses we'd made in that last HDE season. The money was then used as surety for MON to buy Petrov in the period when the Lerner sale was going through but hadn't been completed.

I would say about 1000 ? I never park there as its chaos getting out
-
Nor me. I park on my mate's road on The Brookvale. It's an extra 15 minute walk, but worth it to escape the crowds.
-
Went there to see us play Albion away in the FA Cup. Think it was the game that Kent Nielsen broke Gary Robson's leg. Mountfield and Daley scored in a 2-0 win if I recall correctly. What I defiantly do recall correctly though was that the big screen messed up for 10 minutes.
-
My mum and nan saw Gene Pitney there. Next day he was brown bread. I blame them.

He was only 24 hours from Tulsa.
-
Saw Beck there, very cool.

Hated it,far too much get your hands in the air bollocks.
-
think it was spartak moscow, 2-2 draw and Walters was class in the european cup winning type shirt, but then again I am half cut
-
Used to be our local Asda when I was growing up. I remember buying some Silly Putty there which must make it... let's see... a very long time ago.
-
I remember when we used to buy a few cans from there before getting on the Traveller's Club coaches. Proof af age laws must have been so much more lax in those days. Then again, we might have just pinched them, I'm not sure.
Then we got banned from the Traveller's and away matches immediately became much more of an adventure :)
-
When Doug did the deal to flog the Serpentine to Asda am I correct in recalling a headline in The Meaning Evil calling us Asda Villa?
