Post by: Clampy on November 29, 2012, 07:22:53 PM
To take our minds off the Bent saga, who would everyone like or think we'll get in the draw this Sunday? I'll say Blackburn away, we're due to draw them again.

No Given will get a run out.
So will Bent.
We will  lose 10-9, Bent scores all 9 for us and `Arry has to pay an extra £10million.

I like it. Which would then make it the 6th round 1st leg game at home to Derby County.
The all time record attendance at Villa Park was against a non league club !

If Aldershot ever came good and made it into the 3rd round automatically, would it now be "Number 3 Aston Villa?" I'm not sure I cope with such changes at my age.

I believe when the draw was made on a Monday lunchtime following 2nd round games on a Saturday the numbers would be allocated alphabetically according to the 64 qualifiers. Therefore, when Aldershot or for that matter certain non league sides such as Altrincham made it to round three we would have been number three.
Also the point you raise about Aldershot can be equally applied to Accrington Stanley. Then of coures we can get into a real minefield about AFC Bournemouth.

To take our minds off the Bent saga, who would everyone like or think we'll get in the draw this Sunday? I'll say Blackburn away, we're due to draw them again.

I'll take that. Local game for me!!

I wonder if technically every club in the 1945-46 competition was non-league what with there not being a proper league that year.

I like it. Which would then make it the 6th round 1st leg game at home to Derby County.
The all time record attendance at Villa Park was against a non league club !
my Dad used to mention being at that game.

That's not quite right. The balls 1-44 are all the automatic qualifiers (ie the Premier League and Championship teams) arranged in alphabetical order. The balls 45-64 are the winners of the Round Two ties in the order the matches were drawn out.

So the only way for us to get rid of the cursed number two ball would be for a team starting with A to end up in the top two divisions or, my preference, for Arsenal to get relegated at least twice.

I was talking about how it used to be in "the good old days". The draw was made at FA headquarters on Monday lunchtime, you usually found out the draw by buying a Birmingham Evening Mail at teatime. There were no penalty shootouts, teams may have to replay 3 or 4 times, semi finals were played on neutral grounds, crowds were much bigger than for league games, everybody always played their strongest teams, the only other game on Cup Final day was in Scotland, Yoevil had a sloping pitch, Ronnie Radford had a full head of hair while Motty wore his sheepskin, you watched Cup Final `Its a knockout` at 10am and then waited to see the team coaches leaving from their hotel. The shops were all deserted on Saturday afternoon.......oh yes, and Aston Villa were winners Seven times, more than any other club.

What a pity that level of coverage coincided with our most barren period in the Cup. Me and our kid used to love FA Cup Final day on the BBC so much that we used to say if we got there we'd stay home and watch it on telly.

Is
'The shittest team possible at home.'

Harrogate Town away please

It's our year for the cup. I have never been so convinced of it. ManU at home in fourth round then Man City away. Burnley away in the quarters then Liverpool in the semi. Villa 4 Chelsea 0 and it's ours.

From a selfish point of view - any away game I can get a ticket for.

I've not been to one since the 2009/10 season, I think. Something relatively well priced that we're not definitely going to lose would be nice to get back in the swing of things.

Went to the Harrogate v Hastings match today and really enjoyed it, big crowd, muddy pitch, two teams going for it, reminded me what a great competition it used to be until teams started putting out weakened sides as finishing 12th in the table is more important.

It cost me £12.00 and my son £3.00, money well spent. Hope Villa don't get Hastings, their little number 11 will cause problems!

Mike Parry: "John Thaw, Alan."

Brazil: "Do you know, I've been doing that all morning. John, if you're listening, sorry mate

Can never understand the animosity towards Allan Brazil on here. As Talksport presenters go, he is one of the more reasonable, and articulate ones. And despite being aggrieved about 1981, he generally says favourable things about Aston Villa, often saying what a big club it is.

The last time we drew Ipswich in the FA Cup 3rd round we went on to win the league.
A good omen lads.

from memory, the last three times we have drawn Ipswich in the FAC -

4th in league, won league cup, FA cup semi
won league
2nd in league, won league cup

It's a sign.

An Ipswich supporting mate has asked which pubs away supporters generally go to when playing at Villa. Despite having a season ticket for the last 20 years... I've no idea! Suggestions gratefully received. Thanks

The Witton Arms is the normal one for away fans but they charge £2 to get in or they used to.

Found this on Kevin Beattie. Sounds like he has had a tough time of it.
Looking after his wife with multiple sclerosis and on benefits. Then the bastards at the dole office did him for doing work as a radio pundit for as little as £45 a game.
I doubt you would get much change out of £45 if a family of four sat down in Starbucks these days.

They took £20 from my AMEX. That's just over half the price of a regular ticket in my section.

Therefore, it seems pretty good value to me.

And the postman has just brought the ticket. I don't think that £20 is expensive apart from the fact that they seem to assume that our seats in Lower Trinity are worthy of being the dearest seats in the ground whereas we don't get the best view.  Thats another issue though.

It's the curse of Legion.  At least we can stay in the Lions Club until 5 minutes before kick off and go in there and get warm at half time.

In adversity lies opportunity.
