Title: 28,692. Thank you for your support.
Post by: Andy_Lochhead_in_the_air on November 28, 2012, 03:05:41 PM
"Tonights attendance is 28, 692. On behalf of me, thank you for your support".

Anybody else notice there was not the usual announcement during the 2nd half last night?

Probably because it was the lowest league crowd at Villa Park since 16th December 2006. (27,450 against Bolton).

Obviously there were a few factors at work such as Live on Sky, lower away following, game 3 days before etc. but when every one of the previous 100 plus games has had more people then it's a worry.

I also noticed that they didnt announce it.

I guessed about 28,000, with 15 mins to go I was expecting about 20,000 judging by how many were inside the ground.

Three years of 'transition' 4 wins in a year add to the lethargy about the place.

Don't forget the weather.  My train was literally going through a river, and I was coming from the same place as the Reading fans.  I missed the first 20 minutes because of this.

There was a pathetic turnout in Walkabout on Victoria Embankment last night.

5 of us, jumping up and down, swearing at a giant screen in front of half a dozen bemused aussies, most of whom were watching Lazio v Udinese on the other screen.

The Holte seemed as full and noisy as it has been all season, which I was chuffed to be in. The Corners of the two side stands and top of the North were as barren, however. I think considering the numerous factors:

- Midweek game
- Shite, unattractive opposition
- Poor weather
- Home game three days prior
- Live on Sky
- At least 1,000 less away fans than usual

It probably wasn't that bad an attendance.

Haha, thanks Pauline. I have made sure i've got one for HT Saturday. If it works again home games are going to be a problem as all things permitting I should be back at most home games now. I wonder if VMF will warm me one up at HT?

Maybe we should allow people to post early on the Match Thread. Yesterday there was a couple of early posts which got me paniced as it traditionally meant a Villa defeat. Thinking about it, we've been very tidy and correct not posting on there until the team sheet comes in but the results have been crap. Maybe it's time for a change?

I had an unusual excuse as I posted on the match thread.

Quote
I can't make the game tonight and I'm f***ing annoyed >:( The cause of this catastrophe? A pig. Yes a solitary bloody pig. It's decided that the M1 is a good place for a stroll and has brought Leicester to a standstill.

I should have gone to the bookies after that, it was guaranteed we'd have an all too rare win.

As for the low crowd, most of the usual reasons apply I think.  Just before Christmas, midweek, cold, 3 days after the last home game, uninspiring opposition, poor recent form etc.  I expect it'll pick up again soon enough although results on the pitch are probably the biggest factor.

I've always said that once the crowd gets much above 35k you don't get many more Villa supporters, just people there to see the game.

Spot on.  Sometimes fans get a little upset when we don't sell out every game. Well since I've supported the club (late 70s) we've never had crowds as consistently good as the last 10-15 years. The only way we'll get more fans through the door is if we get a Man City or Chelsea style takeover, then perhaps the glory hunters will come knocking at the door.

This was always going to be a low crowd even if we'd been a bit higher in the league.

How low was QPR midweek from last season. I think that could've been lower than last night but pretty sure we dropped that game to 25 quid admission in all parts of the ground.
