There has been a reference to the Villa in the opening two episodes of BBC3 comedy "Cuckoo".
In episode one Cuckoo is told to leave so that the daughter can meet someone respectable "maybe even a Villa fan".
Last night's episode featured a Villa tea towel.
Pretty sure reference has been made to it being set in Litchfield but does anyone else have any ideas why our great club keeps on being featured?
-
They probably thought "the character should be a football fan, so who would a bloke like that, who lives in Lichfield, support?"
-
Litchfield is in Hampshire, I believe.
-
I haven't seen the show but Greg Davies (who plays the dad, I believe) is from Shropshire and there are plenty us who are Villa fans.
-
According to Wikipedia, both writers - Kieron Quirke and Robin French, went to King Edward's School in Edgbaston.
From memory Helen Baxendale (really fancied her when she was in "Cardiac Arrest") was born in Shenstone, just outside of Lichfield.
-
The kid who plays their son is the son of pervy movie maker Ben Dover and "glamour" model Linzi Drew.
-
Is it any good?
-
lennie Godber was a Villa fan
bet none of you knew that did you !!
-
Is it any good?
Frankly, no.
-
At least one of the blokes writing it is a Villa fan, I'm sure this was covered in the 'Stuff on the Telly' thread a week or so ago. Nice to see Villa getting a mention.

BBC3 eh?
Universal fame at last.
-

bbc 3 comedy is a euphemism for unfunny shite.

From memory Helen Baxendale (really fancied her when she was in "Cardiac Arrest") was born in Shenstone, just outside of Lichfield.
She went to Arthur Terry School and worked as a waitress at the Chinese restaurant above the old musuc shop in Mere Green.
-
I knew Godber was Villa. He was also from Smethwick and had an 'O' level. Geography I think.
-
Which inmate of HM Prison Slade had an o-level in Spanish?
He never features but Fletch mentions him.
-
By BBC3 Standards I thought Cuckoo was mildly amusing, I only watched the first one mind, I mentioned this in off topic last week, I found it funny when he burnt his clothes, but I quite like Greg Davies
-
Oh, by BBC3 standards, it is pretty good, that much is true.

Villa fan?

Correct - he was also studying History O'Level at Slade prison. Fletch tried to help him pass the History exam by arranging to steal the exam paper for him. Unfortunately, the fella who Fletcher asked to steal the paper was dyslexic and he nicked the biology paper by mistake.

I quite enjoy Cuckoo. Thought the placing of the Villa tea towel under the naked Cuckoo's arse did present the perfect opportunity for our rowdy neighbours to shout out SOTV though!
-

Born in Wales and but grew up in Shropshire. Really decent bloke - I knew him and Rhod Gilbert in London 10-12 years ago.
-
Is family Guy still in BBC3?
-

it was tongue in cheek, as everyone knows he was, and always gets mentioned on threads like this, so me being clever thought i'd get in first
by the way does anyone know who Oliver Holts mother is ?
-
mom?
-
by the way does anyone know who Oliver Holt's mother is ?
Emily Bishop from Corrie
-
Barry Austin?
-
by the way does anyone know who Oliver Holts mother is ?
is it Martin O'Neill?
I doubt Holt could possbily love his real mother more than he loves MON, the massive pile of dog shit.
-
I saw Oliver Holt in the airport in Paris coming back from the Tour de France.
With all due respect to the homosexual community, he was pulling the gayest little wheelie bag I have ever seen.

Godber is the name of a Funeral Directors on Smethwick High Street (by the Red Cow):

Villa fan?
Not sure.
-
I knew Ken Jones who played the weaselly snitch of Slade quite well and I asked him whether Godber was a Villa fan and he said not. However, Ken never really got over playing an Everton fan in The Golden Vision, he and his wife who played the original mother in Liver Birds were both rabid ploppers.
-
Adil Ray who writes and stars in Citizen Khan is a Villa fan as well. The episode where they go to the pub had a guy wearing a Villa shirt and the board outside advertised Villa vs Liverpool being shown.

The Brummie connection continues.... a clip on the BBC3 website shows a preview where Ken and Cuckoo are DJ's at a teenagers party and play..... '7 days is too long' by Dexy's Midnight Runners.
Classic stuff.

Sorry! My shonky internet connection cut out as I was quoting, and I must have pressed "post" in my frustration. Think the only point I was going to make was that Helen Baxendale was in the Sunday Times magazine, and considers herself to be from Yorkshire (born in Pontefract) and that she dislikes anything southern. So I think the chances of her being a Villa fan are slim.

A villa fan in the show or in his real life ?
Still love seeing the villa scarf on pike in dads army- anyone remember that time alf garnet was mistaken for a villa fan wearing his west ham scarf- very amusing reaction .

Her children with her partner David Williams are now ten, seven and three and go by the unusual names of Nell Marmalade, Eric Mustard and Vincent Mash

I watched the first episode and a bit of the second last night. It was "alright". I think it might be the first BBC3 thing that I've ever gone out of my way to watch.
It wasn't shot in Lichfield, though.
-
Eastie: The character, Godber, was the Villa fan. I vaguely recall somebody upsetting him by slagging us off. A Man Utd fan I think it was.

The bloke who ironically went on to play the Brummie hotel owner in Boon.

I watch it. It reminds me of the halcyon days of Mind Your Language.

Ah, whatever happened to Francoise Pascale?

The best thing I can say about that Citizen Khan rubbish is that it isn't very funny.

Godber actually mentions Villa in the programme. i remember him mentioning playing someone like Hartlepool in the Cup and I think he said we lost 2-0.

I have to watch it. The muslims at work moan about it being an attack on Islam, I like to keep abreast of the latest slur on Mohammed.
I've spoken to him on Twitter about the Villa as well, seems like a decent bloke. Thought i'd help a brother out by boosting the viewing figures and he's got a second series so good for him.
At least he uses local actors so the accents are actually manageable on the ear. He's one of us so i'm glad he's doing alright out of it.
-
You spoke to Mohammed on Twitter about it?
-
Careful lads, touchy subject. I have to sell this fanzine in the middle of Aston.
Can't you say something funny about Christ instead? Christians are much more easy going.

Nobody could accuse Citizen Khan of saying anything funny about Islam. Or anything funny at all to be honest.
-
I did laugh at the ginger joke in episode 1. OK, it was clumsy, obvious and gingerist but it still made me chuckle.
-
Bloody hell, it's a comedy?
-
I watched about 10-15 minutes of one episode and it was awful. It was actually painful to watch a comedy that was so unfunny. Having said that, I saw the trailer for an episode the other night and the "have you ever Googled yourself" made me chuckle despite being an obvious joke. Then again, I still find farts funny.

.. and based in Sparkhill. That must piss off the Noses watching that.
-
You spoke to Mohammed on Twitter about it?
I got a Tweet of Paul McGrath on Friday. I have spoken to God, who is a little higher up in the chain of command.
-
I stopped 'following' him as my feed was full of 'u r a villa legend god, any chance of a RT'.

The latest episode had me in stitches when they were high.
Karl's workmates would have had a few things to say about that I expect.
-
I've caught up on this and it's actually pretty funny. I didn;t think it would be after reading the thread but as BBC sitcoms go it's not bad. And in episode two the main character gives Cuckoo a Villa teatowel to meditate on.
-
I saw the episode where they get off their faces and go to that party last night, and have to say, I thought it was very funny.

You shouldn't have caved so easily. There are some excellent examples of Bloye art deco sculptures and Holland Hobbiss buildings in the area.
