Thought this deserved a topic of its own, but after conceding 4 on Saturday and scoring 4 tonight, and with a total of 11 goals being scored in the last two games, the ghost of a certain Scottish manager has been officially laid to rest.
Remember this line from the Guardian?
"A pattern is emerging, and it is one where entertaining football is entirely absent"
Somebody else's problem now! 8)

Eleven goals in two games. Can't argue with that.
-
As some of us pointed out on Saturday when others were reaching for the razor blades, this season is going to see a lot of ups and downs, but it's going to be entertaining along the way.
Swansea and tonight don't make us a top 6 side, same as the Everton and Saints results don't make us a bottom 3 side. We're a work in progress but unless they are blind surely people can see a massive change in us already and we're only 7 games in under Lambert.
Be patient and enjoy the ride.

Quite right.
We're going to have some really, really up and down results this season. Losing 4-1 at Southampton (four goals shipped in 40 minutes), then three days later winning 4-2 at Man City is exactly the sort of thing I mean.
On the down side, that means a lot of duff days when we're going to struggle, like last Saturday. One the up side, we're trying to change things, we're behind what the manager wants to do, and we're at least not going to be bored shitless like we were last season.
Interesting times.

A rollercoaster without ups and downs is just a minature railway.

I think it's going to be more of a nemesis than a corkscrew.

By any chance, is it a righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent? Personified in this case by an 'orrible cahnt... me.

I want more goals! I'm as greedy as a pig!!!

Agree and I think we are going to be one of those really unpredictable teams this season. I do hope we tighten up a little at the back over the campaign though as the first goal tonight was very slack.

most sensible thing you've ever posted...excluding spelling ;)

I said in the post match Southampton thread that we'd be getting tonked one week and tonking another team the next If we could just serve out another tonking to the Baggies before were tonked again then I would be very grateful ;)
-
As long we win 4 -2 each week I don't care!
-
It's going to be interesting to see if he will play Bent and Benteke together again after tonight. From what i'm reading Benteke held the ball up brilliantly and this is what Lambert looks for and it isn't Darrens strong point.Gabby sort of made his point on where he should play, but do you leave Bent out? nice to have options eh. Lets hope we see no more of the hoof.
-
Bent a d benteke will definitely play together again. But I do think we may struggle to pass the ball as well when they do.
Interesting selection choices for Sunday. I'm not sure the 4231 we saw yday is as suitable for home games. I definitely don't think it's suitable for bent. I think we saw that last season (it could be if we had much better players in midfield, but we don't. With Ireland out, we do need to adjust how we set up.
-
A great thing with our striking options is that it has allowed Gabby time to return fully fit for the first time in about 3 seasons! It'll be nice for him not to be blighted by having to look "disinterested" with a niggling hamstring or achilles this season.
-
I honestly don't care if we conceed 4 on several more occasions this season, if we bounce back with performances like last night. I can live with defeat; I can't live with lack of desire.
Not for the first time this season, I get the feeling of a club once again moving in the right direction. That pleases me no end - and makes the odd blip along the way quite easy to bear.
-
I was just getting used to Dull with the odd glimse of excitement. Not sure how to cope with
this up and down Villa at the moment. It might take time.

Too true Legion, there are a few of us on here with dicky tickers and all this excitement is getting a bit much.
Bring back TSM, boring is good for the heart. ;)
-
I concur with Paulie and PWS. The over reaction after Saturday was daft, as it was after the Swansea game.
It is going to be like this all season so let's enjoy the ride and let the bloke in charge get on with the job.
We have a got a good one here.

Absolutely right and speaking personally I'm bloody loving the ride so far.
There will be big ups and big downs this season, but at least we've got a sense that we're part of the ride.
Think of us this season as the footballing equivalent of calling out your ex-girlfriends name during the act of coitus. It will still be good fun, but boy are you going to have to hold on for dear life and there's always the risk of it going horribly wrong.
-
I've always said it, a team plays in the image of it's manager.
Indeed. Hence the games at the Etihad under Houllier and McMinge where we'd lost before the players had even stepped off the bus. Defeat is part and parcel of football but lack of effort should never be tolerated.
-
Paul Lambert has done the maths and for now, that will guarantee a roller coaster ride. As an example:
Played Won Drawn Lost Points
6 0 6 0 6
6 3 0 3 9
We would all prefer 9 points. Get the impression PL does not like draws and we will go for the win regardless of the opposition. There will be days like Southampton but my god, there will be days like Man City (granted after extra time).
Exciting football, exciting times are back at Villa Park. Our manager will not settle for a draw even if it means defeat. Mr Lambert has done the maths and I think we will love it.

This result certainly puts the Southampton debacle well and truly to bed. Fantastic response from the lads.
I heard CN'Z had a good game. I've been his biggest critic on these forums, but today it's a big WELL DONE to him. Let's hope he keeps it going.
Gabby was unplayable apparently. That actually adds to my argument regarding injury recovery. Last couple of seasons he got injured, but, in my opinion, come back too early. This time he's had time out and made a proper recovery. I suppose only time will tell.

Bodymoor Heath must be a bouncing place of work today......about time

I am beside myself with excitement for Sunday now. Somebody pinch me

There you go.

Absolutely disgusted with some of the press reaction to this. I was looking at bbc.co.uk and apparently because Man City and poxy Everton were fairly and squarely turned over last night, Premier League clubs don't care about the league cup.
Who the fuck are we then, Crawley?
-
We need to back up last night with a result against the Baggies. No point doing well in the cup if we get sucked into another relegation battle. Good to see Gabby back to doing what he does best though, that really does bode very well.

The media response is predictable, as are the excuses they make because their pre match utterings were so wrong. Villa apparently don't make good media copy at present, plus all the dire warnings of our demise from the Premiership from twats like Savage. By the end of the season, we will hopefully make them all eat their words.

Excellent result and against a strong city team too- well done to all, onwards and upwards !

Fuck em Maz, they'll be jumping on our bandwagon eventually.

Of all the kickings the media have given us, the one that I want to see proved wrong more than any other was an understated one by Lawro the other night. Something like, 'Aston Villa will struggle simply because they've got a lot of ordinary players'.
-
What I enjoyed most about the result is that self inflated ego of Mancini saying that other managers don't give him the respect he believes he deserves. He feels that if it was at Old Toilet opposition managers would not have questioned the decisions so much and would have backed down from Taggert.
Fair play to Lambert and the boys to sticking to the task and not playing in awe of the over hyped cnuts!
Hopefully it will be the way forward!
-
I hope the media continue to ignore and write us off. I also love the sight of a hopping mad, opposition manager. The last time I saw that was Alex Ferguson when we won at Man U. If we're winding our opponents up, we're doing OK. I'm sick of managers saying "obviously Villa will be a tough game", when they really mean "this should be a comfortable win for us".
Lets get in their faces a bit.

This also pissed me off - who are all these superstars at around 15 of the other 20 clubs in our division?
Another one that got me last night was Ian Dowie on SSN at half time with them 1-0 up, casually saying "Looks like Man City will be going through here" as if they were at 5 up with 10 minutes to go! One goal in it and a whole half to play, but lets not even contemplate Villa getting anything.

to be fair under the past managers he would be right .
But this is PL now and things will change.

Not wishing to start a fight but we do have a lot of ordinary players, but luckily they’re motivated and managed by a seemingly excellent manager. I recall Lawro on football focus debating why spurs were not good enough to win the league and his response was something like "they need to sign someone like RVP.”
The MOTD crew seem to think that it is a simple case of picking loads of world class players. They appear to have no understanding of the nuances of running a successful club and indeed acknowledging that success for one club is not the same for another. Rant over.
-
Here is a half rant, what was your comment on the "not dull" thread about me and my pals at the club about?
I am not looking for a fight, and won't reply until tomorrow on account of being busy, but was a bit perplexed Dante, I must say.
-
If you look at the pundits on MotD most of them, when having a bash at management, have been a joke. Lawrenson and Shearer being the two prime examples, add to that jokers like Savage it shows the lack of knowledge or management talent they have. I've given up worrying about what other people think of us and just pleased to see us playing positive football again.

Exactly. Most of us know way more about our club, and to be honest other clubs too, than the lazy, cliched bollocks most TV pundits come out with. Lawrenson's a joke, how is he still in a job?
I'm enjoying this season already, and I think it will get better as we got more consistency. Who can honestly say how we'll play on Sunday? Will we be good, will we be shite? I haven't got a clue
-
I think Mancini has a point about Managers when they go to Old Trafford. However, Sir Alex has built respect over a long time. How often does the commentator tell us that A bottle of red will be shared at the end of the game. Ferguson is in a different league when it comes to playing the game.
-

Mancini was just deflecting the fans attention away from a poor performance by having a dig at their most hated rivals.

This is going to make even less sense now as I cannot remember the exact quotes but I was basically enquiring whether you had heard inside gossip that Lambert was “doing a things properly*” as previously you seem to be one of the few with a “bat phone” to the inner sanctum at villa.
* insert correct quote here. Certainly no offence intended, it was a compliment if anything.

My contact at VP reckons he has heard that PL is a 'right bastard', discipline-wise.
-
Good, about time someone took a grip of the place.

Is there anyone else on here who remembers the early days of Ron Saunders reign and like me is having a dose of deja vu?

I'm sure that if Claire Balding was running MOTD she wouldn't let us be boring ......

Never when they're losing would be my guess.

Couldn't agree more.

I posted a while back that one of the reasons I like him because he doesn't smile much. I can imagine him being a pretty easy going bloke to get along with if you are following the rules, but a prick if you step out of line. I loved the fact that he gave Mancini a right earful the other night. We've needed someone down there who irrespective of the opposition will go out to win. We are going to have some displays like the second half vs Southampton this season, but those kinds of displays will become rarer as time goes on. We need some steel on and off the pitch at the club if we are restore some pride and dignity which has been stripped away over the past few years for a number of reasons.
-
good.

Well if that means a League Cup win and a string of results in the second half of the season that see us finish runners-up, bring it on!

Take two asprin and gargle with TCP fella.

Paul Lambert today praised Villa's whole-hearted approach - but admitted it's doing nothing for his own ticker!
Lambert has been thrilled with the all-action displays of his team, as they have lived up to his positive footballing philosophies.
He said he's as excited as the fans watching the claret and blues go on the attack.
But he joked that it's like a rollercoaster following Villa at present.
Asked if it would up and down this season, Lambert said: "I hope not. But it's a young team and that's what happens with young players.
"It's exciting for myself watching them at the moment.
"You get heart failure like everyone else when you sit and watch it but I am really enjoying it.
"The players are enjoying it and so are the fans. Yes you're disappointed to be losing at certain times but it's certainly exciting for everyone to see.
"The fans are getting excitement. We want the supporters on our side rather than against us.
"You appreciate the crowd because they travel to watch you - sometimes a long, long way.
"But the people who are coming to watch us at the minute, yes it's exciting."
On his positive outlook, he continued: "It's a trait that will never leave me. I don't want it any other way. If you're going to get beat, get beat in the right way but I also want to win as best I can. We will give it a go."
Lambert insisted too much has been made of the Southampton defeat, saying a "mad" spell in the second half was their undoing.
Other than that, he's been thrilled with the improvements he's seen since joining.
He added: "There was a mad 15 minute spell at Southampton but at one-nil we were looking pretty fine and at the start of the second half we could have had a couple more, with Christian and Darren.
"They equalised and then we had a mad spell where we couldn't get at it. But that's happens in football. We will have to take our medicine at times and go again.
"I thought the response on Tuesday was tremendous, phenomenal.
"For 55 minutes at Southampton I was pretty happy and then we just lost our way a bit. That can happen. You don't get time to dwell - you go again."
