An experienced youngster, a bit of a gamble but he's played nearly 90 competitive games against men. More than we can say about most of our youth products.

There's something vaguely disturbing about that.

I remember when we signed some unknown kids from Highgate United and Coleshill Town ,namely Keith Leonard and Gary Shaw and they did'nt do to badly did they,so who knows this kid Bowery might turn out the same.

I think it's the two word qualifier "against men".

Hmmm.... £200,000. A very David Platt type sum. Plucked from obscurity. Maybe...

Joe Bennett and Jordan Bowery. Have Makron delivered a job-lot of tracksuits with the initials JB on them?
Thankfully Jimmy Bullard and Joey Barton have already made their moves.

Welcome and all that, but this signing will only be OK if it's in addition to established quality.  I hope we haven't been wasting time on players like this instead of concentrating on tying up proper deals.

we do need more pace and he's apparently quite quick. Gabby wasn't pulling up any trees at 21 and had a couple of less than impressive spells on loan in the lower leagues. He came along quite well with the right guidance. It's a low risk signing.

When he was 21 Gabby was a first team regular and had scored 20 odd league goals for us.

I'm not saying he's Gabby. but he's a young kid that even if he shows up at 22 or 23 with the right coaching could be an asset. Most of this will be down to the player as to how he progresses.

It is in terms of the signing, but it's a high risk strategy for our season as a whole, relying on kids from the lower leagues.  Our squad just isn't good enough, and promising as these players may be, they just aren't what we need right now.

Comment in the Guardian:

Quote
Bowery's a great signing by Villa and Lambert. He's by far the best player to come out of Chesterfield since Kevin Davies. The transfer may raise eyebrows outside of the S40 and S41 postcode areas, but not within them: if he fulfils his potential he could be a full international.

I agree with Bowery and have no problem with us signing him.  But I was pointing out that Gabby was pulling up trees at 21.

There's yer problem. Gabby did too much manual forestry work in the past and that's why he keeps getting injured.

Sadly a lot pace players seem to pick up a lot of injuries after a few years.

Cue the article on avfc.co.uk / Evening Mail by Delfouneso saying how he is glad there is a challenge for places, when really he isn't.

And Michael Owen was past it at 25. Playters mature at different times.

Yep, and plenty of decent players have never had a shot at the big time. Lamberts Norwich squad, many of whom had come up league 1-2, some had been bought from non-league too, did him well. I remember Simeon Jackson giving us quite a good run around when he played for Gillingham in the cup a few years back. He's now in a premier league squad.

From a Barrow fan mate of mine (they had him on loan briefly):

"Tall, fast, superb in the air. Picked up an injury so went back to Chesterfield early. Didn't score for us but did break some sort of Barra record for hitting the woodwork! Was far too good for the Conference anyway."

He 's a big, strong player and quick for a big lad.

We saw him score a couple against Derby in a pre-season friendly last month -he looked pretty good; certainly got potential to improve.
